  1. Really..is this true or a funny..? He may “declare”, however no NFL team will acknowledge..IMO..

im glad the spot is open actually..I wouldn’t shed a tear if any of them ever stepped on the field again..I have so many plays recorded on DVR and saw ALL of them taking plays off and half a..#@ effort ..ect..at multiple times in multiple games..horrible chemistry, work ethic, attitude ect..they all were on par to be better suited to play for Purdue or division 2...not a one I saw glimpses of a big 10 dozer..

I agree with almost everything you have said, but I want to talk about the bold. Can you elaborate a little more?

Sure, I will try to clarify. I came at that conclusion (in bold) by careful analysis of the one area that can’t be fixed quickly, and that’s our linemen..we all saw how far behind both side of Husker line..I rewinded so many plays this years and had my dad break down what was happening (he played division 2, Tight end) and he went down list of systemic technique problems, due in larger part to Reilly’s stand up and go back wards in pass protection type offense..that’s what they practiced and emphasized..so naturally in a game, they do what they practice..

also, Our linemen are severely lacking in lower body strength and quickness of the ball..the Oline knows snap count..so it’s unacceptable to have the opposing d tackle beat the center and everyone else off the ball to the point of attack..

so so with the premise that it takes years to build big 10 linemen..that’s how I arrived at the 5-7 mark..and without a quality system to churn out those dozers like what MR Meyer had and Wisconsin, NU will never win anything of substance..it ALL hinges on the Lineman..they determine how far a team will go in many aspects..

object example..I think 2002 Ohio State verse Miami..Ohio State had insane, superiority up front and got the win, despite average QB and wide receivers..

I believe by year 3 we will be kings of the West period.

...I agree Brother..that appears to be the course..I came at the 3 year mark, for one driving reason..linemen..you can’t build one in a year or two years..usually 3 years to make a HS young man into a Big 10 Lineman..

...the biggest thing I watch going forward is development of players...some folks on these forums think that “development” is a abstract thing that can’t be measured..I disagree 1000%...one of the biggest tells in development and it also is a tell in recruiting ability is the year group of starters..to clarify, in recent past, both Riley and Loud mouth,  there are scholarship senior lineman on the pine and sophomores starting..that’s a great revelation and confirmation  of the staffs inability to spot right recruits and then develop them. I’m talking specifically about lineman in all this post..

for those old enough to remember, Coach Osborne teams his last decade had MEN starting..as in seniors and perhaps a junior..there were anomalies like grant wistrom..

when i saw sophomores and RFR starting under Riley and multiple senior lineman on the pine..well, it’s quite revealing

I have bought in but I wonder how many fans will really understand the patience necessary?  We need to refer to this during the hard times we endure over the next few years.  It's a long road that will have bumps...  we as fans need to stay the course.

..I’m with you Brother...I posted similar premise somewhere on here...the boosters and fans are my biggest concern for impeding, somehow or another the process..

folks just need ro back off Mr Frost and give him space..I hope they do..this won’t happen overnight, over a years, perhaps it’s a 6 year timeframe until we consistently field a team that can compete and has real ability to beat any big 10 team on any given day..

I have a problem with the bolded.  Ohio State didn't get any more snubbed this year than Penn State did last year.  Unless you were up in arms last year when Penn State didn't get in when Ohio State did, then how can you argue Ohio State got snubbed this year?  The playoff committee thus far has held pretty close to just one rule:  no team gets into the playoff if they've lost more than one game.  The playoff committee has made it abundantly clear that conference championships mean next to nothing to them.  The only B1G team that fits the playoff committee's criteria is Wisconsin.  It really came down to the fourth spot being occupied by either Alabama or Wisconsin.

...after reading my post again where you pointed out..I agree with you, the use of “snubbed”wasn’t the best or right word for the premise that was in my head..my main opinion I was attempting to communicate is that I thought that at this current moment in Time and the level Ohio State reaches, as shown against USC and other flashes of their horsepower through the season,  I thought they were the team to give Nama the best challenge..in large part, because of those NFL practice squad D Lineman Mr Meyers produces..

8 team playoff would solve these most “what if’s”...and controversy..let it be settled on field..dang virtually every college sport, has a more robust end of season system that provides good resolution to their respective sports..

...I know the committee decided the two best teams happened to be from same conference...however it still bugs the crap out of me the championship is in same conference...

  6. ..the players looked slow and timid as it’s a known phenom that individuals take on certain characteristics of their leader..there were times I thought MR Riley needed his pulse checked to see if he was still breathing..the man is prey, not a predator, the players followed same same mentality..prey.

Championship Football has always been won with Defense and in the trenches both sides of the ball.   I could care less about the play fast hype.  Until the problems with the O line and Defense are fixed Frost will have his hands full in the Big Ten.

Agree 1000%...linemen, both sides is the ALL important aspect of game of college football. I know there are certain resources and limited amount of time, amd coaching staffs must prioritize their tasks..In this sense, all the resources on deck need to be moved to getting raw talent to Lincoln, then carving and building them up once they arrive and do what hasn’t been happening lately..development, as the lineman (as a group) actually get better then they were the year before, rather, get better after each week..

usually, if you just watch the first 10 minuets of any game, amd zero in on the lines of each team and see who is pushing and getting pushed, usually the ones Doing the pushing gets the W.

  8. ..the OP posed the “blueprint for success”..and a good post for discussion. I try to stand back and look objectively at the program, in response to this specific thread, IMO,  the boosters and fans are actually my biggest concern in the success of Mr Frost as he goes forward. Husker media and fans and I perceive the boosters (in secret) are absolutely smothering at times..

..the best thing all parties I just listed can do to support the “blueprint for success “ is simple leave Mr frost alone..! In the sense of critiquing his every dang play call and decision..this man knows what the heck he is doing. In part, his success at Florida was due to the school official gave him space to organize, lead, and execute his style of leadership..the same needs to happen in Lincoln. I perceive this is a 5 year period me must go through for him to firmly establish his methodologies and then the years to run his players thorough it..

..i don’t think we 5 years away from beating Wisconsin every year, I predict that will happen perhaps year 3.. it will take 5-7 years to put forth a Big 10 championship caliber team..and churn one out every year. I suppose it’s irresponsible to expect Mr Frost to win the big 10 every year, however I think it is fair to expect to field a team that CAN compete against the big 10s best. I mean compete, if the other team beats future Husker teams, they will have to work their tails off to get that win..and they be sore on Sunday morning..

so so I suppose the bottom line of my premise, I hope the fans and everyone else Simply leaves Mr Frost Alone, as in not smothering and hypercritical of him as he purges the cancerous areas of Husker program..

  9. ..I just saw the stat of the Big 10 is 7-1 in bowl games..I haven’t verified that, however if it’s true, that’s a accurate depiction of how good amd mean the big 10 is verse everyone else..when will the pack 12 learn a thing or two from the big 10..? I suppose never..lineman, NFL caliber win championships, amd the big 10 probably sends more linemen to NFL than any other conference.

  10. ..it is entertaining how the discussion can twist and turn..but hey that’s what these forums are about..

the premise of my OP, was as I survey the college football team, IMO, Ohio State had the best chance to prevent Alabama from holding up another trophy..my main gauge of a team is the Lines, both sides..Ohio State has meaner, more toughness, and experience in flattening opposing linemen than Georgia does..usually the team with dominant lineman..win the game..and I’ll root for Big 10 team over Alabama every time..i was being as objective as possible though in my Ohio state opinion..

Nope. Ohio State would not beat Alabama. I don't think Ohio State is as talented as they were last year and we saw that result. J.T. Barrett seemed to regress over the last two seasons and I think even Ohio State fans would admit that. He's a fantastic player, don't get me wrong, but I am not quite sure he's the same championship-caliber QB we saw years ago. Ohio State didn't get snubbed either, you lose by 35 to a 7-5 Iowa team and that pretty much closes the books on any chances of making it.

Also, the B1G bowl record should not be a rallying cry for husker fans. The team didn't participate, it's a very SEC thing to do.

Well sir, we agree to disagree..I don’t presume judgment about a whole football program by one game, as you did by referencing Iowa...I look at the whole body of work by the team...since you using a one game assessment of program, I suppose I’ll go there..the team that whipped USC a few days ago..is the team that would Alabama give them all they could handle..

  13. 1sr thing, I’m still confounded how to change my handle..I’m NOT depressed anymore..

anyway, I foresee Alabama holding up that dang trophy....again..argh....!

i know this not pure Husker post, however I just felt compelled to discuss and share my observations as the CFB comes to a end..

My first observation, and of course this can’t be proven, it’s subjective, I know that..however IMO The Big 10 is the best and most physical conference in the Land..

Im persuaded, fully, that Ohio state is the only team that could/would whip Alabama...they got snubbed, amd its upsetting, as Georgia is not even close to knocking out the heavyweight in Alabama...? Why..? One word, Lineman.. Typical with Mr Meyer and his approach to football, he devotes the most attention in the recruiting and development of lineman..I said it since the third week of the season..that I don’t care how many times a anomaly happened and Ohio state may lose X amount of games...they would be still THE only team who could and make Alabama work for that trophy...

It’s so frustrating not having the best opponent to face Alabama this year...

  14. ...the QB run play may not be dialed up very much, However having a athlete back there is and can be the game breaker..how 3rd and 3s did Riley and LEE and rest of offense screw up...? I lost count..I cringed when the running lane is right there for the QB (Lee) to tuck it and go get 1st down..however that wast Mike Reilly MO..He preferred to dial up a 3 yard pass when 4 yards is needed..that drove me crazy..

    Great post ERN. +1!

I posted this in another thread a couple days ago - There are a ton of the '94 games on youtube. Younger fans should watch some of the games where Berringer started when Tommie was out. Osborne had so many weapons in the playbook and had the ability to almost toy with a defense and just crush them with play action and throws to the tight end - even against good defenses.

It was smash mouth but it was so much more than that. It had the 'big play ability' at any given point.

..Brother, I love that 94 team..it was peculiar from all the other years. I know that every year the teams has its own identity, however the 94 husker were my favorite of ALL Husker teams..as a observer, it appeared that years Offensive line set the nasty mood for the team. I also think that years O line was the most powerful and mean bunch Huskers ever had..I’ve watched every game of that season so many times and the grand daddy against Miami perhaps 25 times..that game and that Miami team truly showed how dominant the Husker line was..

..a case could be made that years Miami Defensive line was one of their best..that whole Miami defense was remarkably well coached, fast and mean..and the Huskers bull dozers took their constitution away mid 3rd quarter..Stai..probably the most powerful linemen ever at NU, was a sight to watch that night..he had the duty, if I remember rightly, of keeping Warren Sapp out of the backfield, sapps mouth wasn’t running in 4th quarter..he was on his knees...

  16. ...IDK about you other fellow husker fans but this assistant has me the most excited..if you watched game play of Our linebackers, rewind, watch, rewind and watch..you picked up on a never ending theme..they were always, well, more oft than nought,  out of theor position...if you remember player Rudd, he was always in positions..if he knows anything, he knows all about teaching our backers to be in the correct spot on a given defensive play..

i suppose i need need to change my handle..I’m no longer “depressed”..this is first time since perhaps early 2001 football season, I’ve had hope...and I believe my “hope” is absolutely justified now in the person of Mr Frost... many coaches know the Xs and O’s of football inside and out, yet don’t possess the the other required intangibles and tangible gifts and talents a organizational leader must have..I’m persuaded Mr Frost has it ALL to put Competitive, well versed in fundamentals teams on the field..I think he will also do it sooner than later...it will be awhile before he rises the program and installs systems that churn out national title team caliber teams ever year like Ohio state..but he will make teams work  to get a win against his husker teams..

  17. ..until a Husker staff, and I’m persuaded Mr Frost will,  decides it’s ALL important to shift all available assets and time to a offensive lineman production, QB play speculation is meaningless.. when was last time the Huskers had consistently put ANY linemen (offense/defense) in the NFL with regularity..? ..about the same time they were winning a bunch of games..most folks here at not old enough to perhaps even see 1 lineman other than SUH go in the NFL..

  18. ...reading the comments, it seems many folks are missing the mark on why and how the past walk on program worked for Osborne..

..many have posted comments along the lines and premise of  “harder to get players that could get scholarships somewhere else”..

..that’s exactly the area Osborne and McBride excelled in..spotting talent, and specifically un recruitments talent..example, Jared Tomich, he was not recruited out of HS, however Osborne amd McBride and theor insane level of intuition got him in as a walk on...amd if your 40 or older you know how Jared Tomich developed..and where he ended up..NFL..

there were about 31 NFL players that went un recruited out of HS and went Huskers via walk on program..

..that’s the key, Frost and company has to have the calibrated eyeball to spot young men that are not recruited...Time will tell if he can do. I’m persuaded that skill in its entirety can’t be taught..

..also, I observe folks have a way of propagating ideas and things they heard someone else say, without their own cerebral thought put to what they propagating..and what I hear often is many say “how much college football has changed.”...premise...really..? I know all about the scholarship changes by the NCAA and other minutia...however the game has NOT changed my friends..then field is same length and width, still block tackle, run and catch..

..I’m so sick of hearing the i formation and/or Osborne type offense wouldn’t work in today’s “sophisticated “ CFB world..it blows my mind someone could throw out such a definitive statement based on absolutely nothing but ambiguity ideas...

..I’m persuaded now is the perfect time to run that type offensive plan..that’s a different topic

i got sidetracked..it boils down to what no staff has done well at since Osborne left, and that’s develop athletes, that  will decided how much and to what extent the walk on programs helps.

I loved Tommie, but he was a terrible thrower and I was nervous everytime he went back to pass.  In today's game, a fifty percent completion rating won't cut it.

    .tommie....terrible thrower...?

Yes his first 3 years he struggled at times..however look at his 95 stats..4 interceptions whole season ..compared to Lee’s 4 interceptions every 2 games...hum...?

    4D52D1A8-F5A7-40AD-850A-C2FB9BF5ADD2.jpeg

  20. ...I’ve never played college football, however the theory and ideology  I was indoctrinated into during a career in US Army Special Forces is same in principle..it’s human nature to get and stay in ones “comfort zone” unless individual, key word individual, lights his own fire and breaks out of comfort zone..we trained to a professional fitness level in a sense, and working out properly, does absolutely affect ones mind also..the battleground is the mind and it will become calloused and made stronger through intense workouts..

..i first just look at Riley’s offensive linemen, just their bodies appearance clearly show laziness in most of them..the extremely high body fat % is a object example of that individuals lack of commitment to performance...they are sloppy, guys hanging down..it shows a lack of individual effort in gym..until Mr Frost can recruit Individuals who can motivate themselves and don’t require a coach to get them up and pushing the limits..the same same weak performance on line will continue..I foresee a some of these lazy lineman that started this year, either never step on field again, or they go other way and finally acquire a fire to do the pancaking instead of being pancaked...however if they don’t posses the “want to” by now, they never will have it..

This reflects a group of men who decided first in their mind they desire to dominate opposition, then actually put desire into action..Mike Reilly’s lineman generally lack all these virtues..

...I remember Zack Weigert stating that He and other linemen looked forward to Saturday’s...because it was “a break from practice..”...

How much of that is the culture under RIley? Lack of accountability and lack of drive. Only so much he can do if the players aren't in the weight room.

I think you nailed it.. Riley did not know first thing about accountably.. he was concerned with being “friends” with players ..

that doesn’t work in organizational leadership.. especially with 18-22 year olds .. I never heard a former Osborne and McBride player at the time they playing call coach O or McBride their “friend” ...

and im persuaded the second part of problem is the players themselves.. they have not mad

dog, lunatics like Peters Brothers and Zach Weigert who were known to “push”  the team.. literally if needed.. we don’t have a man that steps up as THE alpha as says this is what we WILL do....we WILL hit folks and get back to de cleating opponents ..

Teaching someone to throw and teaching someone to throw and makes decisions as a QB are two different things my friend.

I understand my friend the differences.. however the premise as I stated is there are Allot of HS super studs that play QB and stay on the field and play defense.. Adam Carricker is just one example of a HS QB + other positions.. my premise was simply recruit talent and then train appropriately what you have them to be.. can’t put talent and aptitude in a player but said player can be taught the techniques of a position... class C schools are

littered with players who never come off field..

they also bring what’s been lost over the years.. mental toughness
