Today I learned Nebraska and Michigan each only have one offensive formation. My 9 year old nephew disagrees, but he's not the expert DiNardo is.

The only real takeaway here is the division breakdown makes it slightly easier for Nebraska, which we knew. I emphasize slightly because it's not as cut and dry as it seems. Of the four teams in the East that make up that clear upper tier, Michigan every year has to play 3 of them...which Nebraska does this year as well. 2019 only has Ohio St, so a big difference there, but 2020 is Ohio St and Penn St, and 2021 gets 3 teams again with Ohio St, Michigan, and Michigan St. Bottomline, Michigan's got the tougher division, but Nebraska tends to draw the toughest part of it.

The big problem both teams have is Ohio St. If Ohio St is the leader in the East in a given year, it's a harder year for Michigan because it becomes very hard to win a division if you can't beat the division leader due to head to head tiebreaker. If someone like Penn St has a strong year, that potentially lessens the importance of the head to head. Bottomline, sometimes having numerous potential division winners is easier because of the chaos, rather than needing to go 8-1 or better due to having only 1 potential rival.

Nebraska's problem with Ohio St may even be bigger because Wisconsin, currently and for the foreseeable future leader of the division, only plays Ohio St. in 2019. 2020 is a joke schedule with only Michigan of that top 4, and 2021 has Michigan and Penn St, but both at home with road games at ever cushy Illinois and Rutgers.  Bottomline, Nebraska's window is small...2019, Wisconsin's potentially toughest year and Nebraska's clearly easiest.

And by "tough year" I mean they have to play Michigan, Michigan St, and Iowa at home. But...if DiNardo is right and Michigan has no plan and Harbaugh is "all over the map" then even that suddenly doesn't look like that tough of a schedule. At no point in the current Big 10 schedule does Wisconsin play both Ohio St and Penn St, and only plays each of them once. Meanwhile Wisconsin gets a heavy dose of Michigan.

On a somewhat related note. If this wasn't Frost's first year and we weren't in rebuilding mode, the schedule this year would be perfect for a playoff run. If you went undefeated or even 12-1 or 11-2 (including the conference championship) with our schedule this year it'd be hard to keep us out!

  2. Considering the recruiting transgressions at places like Ole Miss, the Nike stuff in college basketball and all the other serious violations at other schools, this is pretty minor. They gave away too many tickets, didn't report it correctly and gave a few "possibly" unfair reduced price tickets to staff. Honestly, the biggest thing I got out of the articles is their may be some tax implications that weren't reported well. Inflating the attendance numbers is reaching for straws in my opinion, like was mentioned above if exact attendance were counted NU wouldn't have the streak. Doesn't seem like any sort of embezzlement or "missing funds" are being reported and those are true fiscal mismanagement issues.

Wonder if there is more context to that answer. He has stated before that Bo couldn't get over the hump etc several times before. Scott is too smart to just have an open ended answer like that without context in my opinion.

I was thinking there might be more context to that quote as well! I don't see Frost praising the fans like he has then turning around and scolding them, just seems odd.

  4. Maybe this is obvious and I don't see it, but why leave the team now and not after spring? He said he is finishing the semester at NU, so might as well stay on the team and get whatever training and conditioning you can right? It's not like they were just going to have him sit on the bench for the rest of spring practices.

  5. Not sure I've seen anyone post this note from an article yesterday. It's great to hear that Osborne is has a near daily presence at practice this spring. His presence can only help!

Osborne a regular at workouts: Legendary NU coach Tom Osborne emerged from the balcony above the practice field inside the Hawks Championship Center near the end of Thursday's practice, stopping for a few minutes to chat with the media members gathering in the adjacent lobby. Osborne has been a constant presence during Nebraska's spring workouts, and was at Saturday's junior day.

  6. Another streaming option to toss in, Playstation Vue. Their Core plan will get you all ESPN channels, BTN, and all Fox channels. I'm in Montana, but never miss a game with that! You just have to make sure you get your local affiliates which I do through an antenna.

Frost said he’s a firm believer in morning practices, saying players will sleep in and miss class but won’t sleep in and miss practice. What’s more, he says, morning practices kick in everyone’s metabolism, meaning folks will stay more alert throughout the day.

This might not make a big impact, but one great thing I see about the morning practices is the early Saturday games. It seems like for as long as I can remember (mid 2000s, i'm only 25) the Huskers have started slow and been lethargic in the Saturday morning game slot. Maybe morning practices having kids used to being awake and moving will help knock off some of that!

  8. Tre Bryant makes me think of Boobie Miles (Friday Night Lights), except he made it to college, etc. Really good talent, but knee injuries keep him from being successful. Hope he can get healed up!

    Q. How is Title IX applied to athletics?

Athletics programs are considered educational programs and activities. There are three basic parts of Title IX as it applies to athletics:

    1. Participation: Title IX requires that women and men be provided equitable opportunities to participate in sports. Title IX does not require institutions to offer identical sports but an equal opportunity to play;
    2. Scholarships: Title IX requires that female and male student-athletes receive athletics scholarship dollars proportional to their participation; and
    3. Other benefits: Title IX requires the equal treatment of female and male student-athletes in the provisions of: (a) equipment and supplies; (b) scheduling of games and practice times; (c) travel and daily allowance/per diem; (d) access to tutoring; (e) coaching, (f) locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities; (g) medical and training facilities and services; (h) housing and dining facilities and services; (i) publicity and promotions; (j) support services and (k) recruitment of student-athletes.

    NCAA FAQ

It does only require equal scholarships, not necessarily equal number of players. However, if you look at the "Other Benefits" section you have to have equal access to "recruitment of student-athletes." Obviously walk-ons are recruited and this is open to interpretation so I imagine that is where the concern comes in. They have to make sure the walk-on program is applied equally across the board in resources spent on it.

  10. The other thing to consider is the toll head injuries are taking on the sport and the amount of kids that are choosing to walk away from football. That wasn't the case back int he 90s, every kid wanted to play football in college. I think there are more and more kids saying I didn't get a big time scholarship maybe it's time to hang up the cleats instead of walking on. I know several guys who went and played NAIA and FCS levels. Almost all of them regretted it because they had next to no chance to move on, it took up almost all their time, they had opportunities for non-athletic scholarships they turned down and it took a big toll on their bodies. I think there may be more top athletes who also excel in the classroom walking away from football.

This OL is a mess and likely have been doing S&C that will be different than what this staff wants (don’t know that for sure just remember the Kelly Oregon teams wanting smaller faster Tackles).  If we can say that our OL was average at the end of next season Austin should receive coaching accolades.  More likely another season of s#!tty OL Play.  The good thing is I thinks we have some decent young players it’s just going to take time to develop them

I do remember Oregon having smaller faster tackles, but I think this staff offered a JUCO OT that is like 6-7, 300+ on their first night. That's a huge dude, so HCSF may have evolved the OL a bit since his Oregon days.

  12. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but it doesn't seem like the staff is prioritizing QBs in their offers. They did offer Martinez, but I think you offer a guy of his caliber regardless of what is on the existing roster. So far they haven't offered a JUCO QB or any other freshman, so maybe they feel good with what is on the roster already.

  13. It's interesting reading these articles, ESPN has this one, OWH put one out, I think LJS had something similar. I also just listened this this radio bit on his last week: https://969thegame.iheart.com/featured/beat-of-sports/content/2017-12-04-the-last-week-for-scott-frost-at-ucf/.

They all talk about how torn SF was, how hard of a decision, etc and I believe that he really did have a hard time leaving and really enjoyed Orlando and UCF. However, I work in the marketing/PR world and the fact that all these stories are so similar and coming out at the same time makes me think there is some PR work going on to soften the blow at UCF some. The only reason SF would do that is because he cares and wants people to know that he really was torn, but it seems to me like people are pushing this story hard.

Highest applies. Max bonus each year is $950K

Woah, 5 million per year buyout for the first 5 years, that's a commitment. Am I understanding it correct that NU would own him the full base salary each year then if he's let go before 5 years is up? If so, SF is getting a minimum of 5 years to right this ship and likely at least 7.
