Two other college teams?  Sports bigamist.

I went to both the others and earned degrees from them.   But Nebraska is the only school I routinely, annually contribute to (rather heavily now to keep tickets and parking for us).  I'm a Husker!  But I have two other beloved schools that have teams I follow.. but Husker red is all I wear.

I think you sum it up for any Nebraska fan.  Tried to explain the passion to my co-workers.  They just don't get it.

Nebraska natives don't have anything else to turn to when the Huskers (well, Husker football) fail.  No other big sports teams as Texans do or Californians or Floridians or where ever.

Nebraska football is it, it's the state identity.  Likely unique in the country.

I'm not from here but I've been here long enough to get it (since '88, before many fans here were born).  When the Huskers fail I have my other two college teams and the pro team that I grew up with.  So I don't get stabbed in the heart like my wife and her family do, them being natives here.  But I see it and I'm compassionate to understand and root and cry for better play calling and better performance so we can go home with a less than heavy heart as we file out of that great old stadium.

  3. Some of the guys are getting better.  Some are getting testy.  Some are just not believing in things anymore.  Coaches and players.  Can the coaches put the "better" ones in the right places, etc?  Can the D stop Minn from reeling off big plays?  Probably not.  But....

    Golden Moles - 34

    Cornhuskers - 35

    Our rushing - 198

    Our passing - 358

I am a big believer in looking at data when looking at bringing in new members of the coaching staff. When Diaco was hired in early 2017 I was pretty critical of the hire as the data did not paint a good picture of his track record outside of one standout season at Notre Dame in 2012. I was also skeptical of Frost's selection of Chinander given what the data showed, but I was willing to give Chinander the benefit of the doubt. In my mind having a dominant defense is more important to becoming a championship team than having a stellar offense. Here is a quick look at where the last 5 national champions finished in Team Defense.

    2017-Alabama finished 1st

    2016-Clemson finished 15th

    2015-Alabama finished 3rd

    2014-Ohio State finished 29th

    2013-Florida State finished 7th

Now here are the finishes as an assistant in D1 football.

    2010-Oregon finished 36th

    2011-Oregon finished 96th

    2012-Oregon finished 50th

2013-Went to NFL for one season

    2014-Oregon finished 102nd

    2015-Oregon finished 115th

    2016-UCF finished 46th

    2017-UCF finished 91st

    2018-Nebraska is 70th

So the defensive philosophy Chin learned under at Oregon had one top 40 finish but spent most seasons in the bottom half of D1 defenses. His 3 seasons as a DC at UCF and Nebraska put him around 70th in D1.

I understand Frost has a long history with Chinander, but I think he needs to take a step back and assess whether his defensive background is what is needed to get Nebraska back to competing for championships.

Best post on this subject I've seen so far.  So, not much to add to it (thanks for all the data!).. just reposting it for your haters' viewing pleasure.  :D

  5. Riley nearly always blamed himself.  I don't think he ever intimated that this or that unit (defense, offense, special teams) was to blame for a loss.  He'd talk about work needed and how they were on the brink of winning each game but just couldn't quite do it.. etc.

Different personality this time.  Similar words as to how "close we are to winning," etc.

Are we to keep relying on the saw about the players being messed up because of the previous coach?  Riley didn't say that exactly, but he did use the word "inherit" when alluding to his current players and how tough it was going to be to win under a new regime.

Some coaches out there come in brand new to a storied program on a losing streak and do just fine right away.. or within a few games.   Nebraska has won 6 games since late 2016.

I was excited about the Scott Frost hire.  But now I'm not one bit.  I'm disappointed in him and his cadre of coaches (perhaps the strength guy is better?).

I recall that newbie Nebraska came into the Big Ten favored to challenge for the Big Title in its 1st year joining the league. If you think that caused resentment among the other Big Ten teams, I suspect you’re correct. If you think that caused bias against Nebraska, I suspect you’re correct.

Move forward to 2018. The new head coach for Nebraska just won several coach-of-the-year honors for the 2017 season, lead UCF to a major bowl win over Auburn and declared that UCF deserved to be crowned National Champion. He had a compelling argument since UCF beat Auburn, who had beaten Alabama and Georgia, the two teams that played for the official National Championship. If you think the UCF coach’s statements caused some resentment and bias against him, and some angst among the official National Championship folks, I suspect you’re correct.

Harken back to the post-1997 season when the Nebraska QB lead his team to victory over Tennessee in the bowl game to win the National Championship. Clearly, Nebraska throttled and dominated Tennessee in that championship game. In contrast, Michigan, who shared the National Championship that year with Nebraska, barely defeated a very marginal Washington State in less-than-impressive fashion. Subsequent to that win, the Nebraska QB declared his position that Nebraska deserved to be awarded the National Championship. That declaration by the Nebraska QB, and subsequent share of the National Championship caused significant resentment in the Big Ten, and continues to cause resentment among the Michigan faithful. To this day, Michigan maintains that they were robbed of a consensus 1997 National Championship due to the Nebraska QB’s statements.

So for 2018, Scott Frost, that 1997 National Championship Nebraska QB and 2017 highly-honored deserved National Championship UCF coach, returned to Nebraska, obviously now in the Big Ten. Based on some one-sided officiating seen this year against Nebraska, one has to ask if others set out to ensure a disappointing season in Scott Frost’s Big Ten inaugural season.

    lmao

  7. After listening to Scott Frost and reading quotes from the players ("We did it all on defense, and yet we lost") I have learned that the standards are low on that team.

Unless the coaches and players are delusional.

Didn't they notice the 250 yards gained on them in the fourth quarter?  The 90 yards in penalties?

    Etc.

    I'm disgusted.

  8. I think S.F. can and will come around to being a fine coach here at Nebraska.  It'll take several seasons and some bullet biting on his part as to adjusting (firing) some of his staff, especially defensive, along with, of course, getting out of play calling and letting OC do that.

    Just my two cents opinion.

Frost needs to relieve himself of playcalling duties.

-Chin is not the answer at DC. UCF fans were correct

-I will be happy when Reed, A Williams, Jackson, Neal, Young, and Freedom move on.

-Hats off to Barry, Gifford, Martinez, Spielman, Washington, and Zig. Those guys want to win so bad.

-Worst special teams I’ve ever seen.

Young guys need to play more.

    Yep.  All of it.

My wife just said it as:  "Scott Frost, bless his heart, is in over his head."

  10. We'll probably get better when the new head coach and his cadre come around to understanding  Big 10 football.   Perhaps even once he does we won't win much, a few games here and there, similar to Rutgers or Purdue, because it'll take time for him to adapt his understanding to his team and coaches here.

One, two, or three wins this year is my guess.

  11. I want the win (and the win out.. Ohio State notwithstanding) so much my blood boils when I think about it.   But..

..yes, but.. ugh.. whatever the capabilities of the individual players may be, as to athleticism as well as to freeing themselves of mistakes like penalties, two things keep creeping into view:

    1.  They have a dc who IS NOT PROVEN.  Why he was brought up here I will never understand.  If it were not for a high scoring offense that Central Florida team would have gone 6-6 in their last season at best.

    2.   This team does not know HOW TO WIN.  The offense knows how to rack up yardage.  And that is all we've got;  a productive offense as to yardage.  We're proving that yardage (and even time of possession) is not enough TO WIN.

No defense.  No special teams expertise.  Just a fine quarterback (prone to injury?).
