If he wants to go I'll wish him well. I wouldn't blame him. Frost clearly favors his guys and jd isnt going to be a focal point of the offense as we saw from this year. I would just prefer he went somewhere else besides a team on the schedule next year.
Interesting take. Many seem to think that JD is the only receiver that Martinez can find.

As others have said, it seemed as though he was waiting around for a better offer his entire recruitment. Maybe he wasn’t really excited about the offers he held and that’s why it was difficult for him to make a final decision? I never really felt confident, even when insiders were saying NU.

Very disturbing. It sounds like they helped each other commit these crimes. IF there is a third player involved, I would think whoever lived in the dorm room where some of these alleged assaults took place is certainly a factor. We’ll see.

Did you forget that Frost embarrassed Mr. Fleck year prior? Or does that not count in your method of proof?
No, I didn’t forget. But it certainly doesn’t indicate that we’re trending in the right direction, does it? Fleck, on the other hand, was embarrassed, made changes, and turned a corner. Look, I’m behind Frost but we bobbled our “easy” schedule and now we’ve got a tough road ahead. I doubted Fleck and he’s definitely eccentric but I think he’s doing a good job.

Interesting. Fleck embarrassed Frost on the field this year and the Gophers have 10 wins this season with their easy schedule while we have 5 with ours. I think he’s proven himself. We’re still waiting for our proof.

I think we will see a few more guys end up on the list per the norm. I think WanDale sticks around though.
Name I am hoping stays off is JD Spielman. I know most have said he can graduate in time and so doesnt make sense, but still nervous about the rumblings.
My understanding is that he would be eligible to graduate in May 2020 at the earliest. So, he could enter the portal next semester and grad transfer after May. If he doesn’t graduate until December 2020, then it isn’t likely to happen. I hate to see him go but if he’s really so unhappy here that he’d rather transfer for his last year of eligibility than shatter every NU receiver record, then its probably better for him, the coaches, the team culture, etc. if he moves on.

Anyone hear about us getting a CSU OL transfer?

If I am thinking about this correctly, the other McCaffrey brother will more than likely start for Michigan next season, and I am guessing that Luke would also in his mind expect to start here, if HE feels he is the better player overall. Judging from the end of the season, I think that Luke is the better player, just less experienced to this point. If HC Frost feels that Amart is the man, then he is the man, and we won't keep both on this roster. This is where the game is today. If you look around the nation, almost every great starting QB transferred into where they are now playing and contending for either Heismans or other awards.
Fields at OSU was at Georgia, Eason at Washington was at Georgia, Burrows was at Ohio ST now more than likely Heisman winner at LSU, and the list could go on. Heck the last two Heisman winners transferred into OU. So I wouldn't say that either one of these guys feel that they have to stay here, if they aren't the starter. I don't know either one's situation or personal makeup, but competitors want to compete, and thats usually why these QB's transfer. Hope for the best, expect the worst!
Although...Dylan McCaffrey has been Shea Patterson’s backup for a couple of years, and has stayed despite their fans (also) calling for Patterson’s benching. Luke committed when Martinez was having an excellent freshman year so I think he understands that he is a raw prospect and needs to mature in to the role. That said, Frost simply can not let him get away if it comes to that.

If JD would rather transfer for his final year of eligibility instead of break every Husker WR record, that’s concerning.

Corcoran and Betts aren’t stepping on campus and starting.
And I’m guessing 2 of your projected starters won’t be on the team next year.
Domann? Spielman to grad transfer? These would be huge losses.

I bet Martinez has at least one surgery in the next week or two. He had to have been injured.
It's either that, or Frost doesn't have much faith in him at all because if he is everything that Frost PUBLICLY proclaims he is why would he have sub packages for backup QBs?
If he is really a dude, you don't take him off the field. I think he is hurt or Frost had decided he needs to open up the competition.
My thoughts exactly. You don’t design packages for backup quarterbacks against a better team when a bowl game is on the line unless you don’t have confidence in your starting QB to make those plays.
-
I’m beginning to think that the coaches continue to play Martinez because they feel responsible for his regression (to a degree) and feel some loyalty to him to help him work through it. I think he bulked up too much and it slowed him down.
The play calling indicates to me that Frost doesn’t trust Martinez and Martinez’s decisions indicate to me that he’s lacking confidence in himself and his teammates. I think the packages he “designed for Luke and Noah” were done because he doesn’t have the confidence in Martinez to make those same plays. Maybe because Martinez is injured?
Also, his ability to remain calm under pressure is good, and he was admired for that last year, but he just seems to lack the competitive edge he needs to be a leader. The Illinois game comes to mind - playing like he has all day to make a play...until he doesn’t. Then, he plays up-tempo and makes some great plays to win us the game.
Frost continues to support Martinez to the media but I hope behind closed doors that he opens up the QB position next year. Either Luke wins the job or Martinez regains his competitive edge and wins it back.
And what about the rumor that Milton is transferring here? Any one know if there’s any truth to this?

I would never want to trade places with them. Being happy with 8 win seasons and boring AF football... no thank you. The down years suck but I hope we never get to the point we are that complacent.
I agree. I look forward to the day when we have an identity as a program.

Pathetic, why even come back if you can't stick with us through the difficult times.
I was a kid in the ‘90s so I had been spoiled with excellence. I was still a casual fan, by the way. I just wasn’t as emotionally invested. Also, this season has been a “difficult time” and I’m still here.

Realize you're not asking me, but I definitely thought Adrian had "it" last year. I thought he was our generational QB. So did outside observers, who had him starting the year on the Heisman short lists.
There seems to be no question that he's lost some of "it" this year.
Leaving the question still hanging: can he get "it" back?
"It" usually shows up when the stakes are high, so Maryland isn't definitive evidence yet.
Yeah, I hope he puts together a good game vs. Iowa. I actually thought he looked good against NW before his injury. Purdue was his worst game, in my opinion. His stats and ability last year make me hopeful that he can get “it” back and make me think he’s just working through some things as a player right now. I guess I’m just not ready to give up on him and I find it surprising that others are (already) doing that, given that’s he’s a true sophomore and the myriad of other issues the team has had this year.

Coming off a weekend where Nebraska played one of their best games of the season and Iowa played one of their worst games of the season, this Friday could be very interesting. I am not sure how much of Nebraska's game is due to Maryland - but you also looked much better against Wisky the week before. Iowa seems to have forgotten how to tackle rushers in the past few weeks, but our pass defense has remained pretty solid and we are doing REALLY well at closing things down once teams get in scoring range. We also have an issue scoring TDs and keep settling for FGs.
With freezing rain in the forecast, ball security could be an issue and this should be a big advantage for us. I think that both teams will move the ball through the center of the field at will and the game will be decided by who gets TDs, who gets FGs, and who walks away with nothing once they are in the red zone. This is where Nebraska's newfound ability to actually make field goals will help a lot as I don't think Nebraska will have any better luck getting into the end zone than the other teams we have faced this year. We have held teams under 40% TDs in the red zone vs. 70% for Nebraska. I think that will be the difference in the game as Iowa is near the top in red zone defense and Nebraska is near the bottom in both red zone offense and red zone defense.
I hope that we spoil your guaranteed bowl game, but that you still manage to grab an invite at 5-7 so that you all get to go bowling and get the extra practices. With what Frost is trying accomplish that would be huge to get a jump start on next year! I also hope the forecast changes as sitting through a game in freezing rain isn't fun, but I will be there with at least some of you regardless of the weather! Go Hawks
We’re unstable fans of an inconsistent team so we have no idea what to expect. Enjoy the game!

Morgan was such a great target in the red zone, too. He had strength and such a good route-runner, that he was a great target near and in the end zone.
Yes. We’ve seen a lot fewer end-zone passes this year, it seems.

IMO playing qb in a system like this requires someon with good vision that can think quickly and slow down the game. It’s a natural gift that not everyone has. I don’t think You can teach it. I’m not seeing it out of AM. I hope I am wrong.
Again, I have to ask: did you think he had “it” last year?

But he didn't. Man we love to play this game especially when we win
54 minutes ago, Aliens05 said:I'm sure this won't be a popular opinion after reading several posts voicing the opposite opinion....but I am in the camp that thinks that Martinez does NOT give us the best chance to win. You can't look at the Maryland game and say he put up a certain number of yards. He in all reality should have had about 3-4 MORE turnovers, we got absolutely BAILED out that those turnovers didn't happen.
The thing is, he has done this in about every single game this year. I think (IF HEALTHY) that actually Vedral gives us the best chance to win. It would be something similar to what Iowa does, steady play, nothing crazy, but mistake free. Martinez is the polar opposite of mistake free, at least this year...
I don't know about playing Mcaffrey for the majority of the game against Iowa though either. He has played great, but mostly on runs, and Iowa I feel would kill him, the kid is small and skinny, but a good player. I just don't think Martinez has it this year. Now maybe I am wrong (this game) and Martinez comes out and just plays amazing against Iowa. That would be more than welcome, and I will eat my words if he does. I HOPE he does, but based on what Ive seen this year I am not confident.
Maybe Martinez was taking more risks because he knew he could against a Maryland defense that had given up? He played a pretty clean game against Wisconsin, right?

We have lost four in a row to Iowa. Iowa!
This, to my mind, is unconscionable.
We absolutely must win this game or I will dive head first into the Dredge.

I want my Hy-Vee Fuel Rewards!
I have to agree with the first part. I checked out as a Husker fan for a long time and checked back in once Frost was hired only to discover that we’ve fallen lower than Iowa. Imagine the horror! Iowa is solid though and I envy their consistency. Props to them.

For those who think Martinez doesn’t have “it” and isn’t the QB for us in the future...
What did you think of him in 2018? Did you think he had “it”? If yes, then do you think he really just lost “it”? There have been a number of issues with the team this year and I think Martinez developed some not-so-great habits because of that. I’m hopeful he can make a jump next year. I also wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he has been playing injured (shoulder) once the season’s over.

I was impressed with the Maryland players helping our players up after tackles. Classy. Luke is a really talented runner and never seems to tire. I had a laugh when he was playing WR and picked Martinez up when he was knocked out of bounds.

The rumor is that he was stringing along WI’s coaches AND our coaches so our staff pulled his offer and he tried to get back in our class but we moved on. So this seems to support the notion that he was stringing the coaches of both programs along.
