That’s understandable if you were to. I’ve felt similar sentiments…

I’d caution however that this is the latest round of names speculated upon. Trev said that he’d be speaking with many different coaches as part of the search.

We won’t know until the process concludes and the coach is officially determined.

Maybe Trev already spoke with a bunch of different coaches... maybe those four were the only one's showing true interest; while the other names said "I'll get back to 'ya"

To be honest, I hope not.  MJ is great in what he does as receivers coach and recruiting, but we need a very, very and did I say very experienced guy in here who knows how to develop and sustain a program.  This is no place for on the job training.

    Like, how experienced, tho?

  3. It's better than the coliseum (USC) or the Rose Bowl (UCLA).

There is A TON of literal sitting around during T.V. breaks at these stadiums (I live in LA, and have been to both); and these stadiums typically don't draw the same crowds unless Oregon, Utah, Notre Dame (big names) are in town.

UCLA is interesting because the Rose Bowl is NOWHERE NEAR the actual campus. This takes a major toll on their attendance.

I wonder how they will fare in B1G, in terms of attendance.

I am ecstatic about the move, as Nebraska will come to LA WAAAAY more often, now, and I hope this opens up West-Coast recruiting for Nebraska (perhaps a new thread)

Someone needs to go get a goat and take it to memorial stadium and put it in the middle of the field in the middle of the N and sacrifice it to the football gods

Is that really the only way to get Urban to Lincoln?

Incognito never entered my mind as to coaching here.  Now that I see his name there it made me think about it, and I find myself worried that he'd alienate so many fans that.. well, it'd be distracting.  I loved his play, but his problems loom large.

it was a joke, really... all the names kinda are (I doubt Peterson takes an OC job, anywhere; but maybe... Orgeron may be looking for a HC position, as well... I'd highly consider both if they'd be willing to be coordinators; but again, I doubt it)

Richie is known to have anger management/mental health 'questions'... however, I do want an 'aggressive' personality coaching up our lines; just not someone who might go off the rails, again.

I'd def. take a risk on an inexperienced Suh as DL coach, tho... I just got a sense he'd make a solid DL coach. I like the thought better than I felt about Raiola taking over the o-line (who wasn't exactly proven, either; and the Bears oline wasn't exactly stellar during his time there)

Yes, I saw that interview and was impressed with MJ.  If he can bring on big name DC/OC that would be great if he is retained. I would think that would have to be a part of the announcement Trev makes if MJ is retained to offset the cries for a big name guy.  Package MJ wt dynamic OC/DC.  And yet, there is no guaranty that could happen - that once MJ is named as HC that he would attract the best names to what has become a football coach grinder at Nebraska.

    Chris peterson - OC

    Ed Orgeron - DC

Ndamukong Suh - DL coach (if not signed to NFL team)

Richie Incognito - OL coach (to bring gritt)

    we're set!!! :thumbs

I'm guessing he wasn't walking through many OL doorways as the receivers coach.  I'm not sold on MJ yet but I do have confidence he can recruit to any position.  He is a genuine guy that develops relationships quickly.

I'm not sold yet, either (how can any of us be with 5 big games remaining).

if he can recruit lineman, I feel he should be doing that. If MJ can be a top tier O-line recruiter, I'd rather have him focusing on that, rather than skill positions, tbh.

Not sure if that means he will need to be transitioned to OC (if not named HC), rather than WR coach... maybe RB coach?

I have NO CLUE as to how position coaches work in accordance with recruiting.

Do WR/QB coaches do o-line recruiting? Do DB coached recruit edge rushers?

  8. I don't know Mickey's recruiting history; so I'm going off everyone's word that he is a top recruiter (with some proof via his short time at Neb.)

However, Does anyone know his track record when it comes to recruiting Linemen, specifically, Offensive linemen?

This MUST be addressed; and addressed fast... Mickey touched a little on it, talking about JUCO possibilities.

Rob Zatechka discussed Coleman on his latest podcast with Travis Justice.  Zatechka thinks Coleman should try to add 20-30 lbs and be a super fast, high-level pass-rushing DE/OLB.  Zatechka's thoughts are based on Coleman's speed and athleticism isn't found very often at that position.  However, Coleman has indicated that he wants to run track (as a 100-200 meter sprinter) in college, so Coleman would probably want to stay around his current weight to do so, which would make him a WR.

Pass rushers make a $h!t ton of money in the NFL... maybe that's enough to convince him to give DE/OLB a shot.

Unfortunately, WR's also make a ton of money in the NFL, too. there seems to be more competition at WR at the collegiate and pro level, tho

Guys that are natural-born stud pass rushers don't seem to come around very often

If Coleman has the build and traits to be a potential stud pass rusher, it should be a no brainer.

He may LOVE track, though... do what you love.

...As I re-read what I wrote, one thing is glaring.  Our previous HC's did a horrible job with getting legit coordinators and  position coaches. I look at MJ as a position coach, develops talent and recruits.  Applewhite, develops the RB room etc....IMHO, this is why Trev has said that we will have the largest assistant salary pool ever.  I think he realizes a part of Frost's failure was the crew of guys he brought with him.

    An NFL staff, maybe?

All the common names being thrown out there (except Rhule, kinda), are primarily College Guys.

Ron Rivera & Mike Tomlin may be on the hot seat... potential candidates?

We may also consider stealing a top NFL coordinator if he can bring guys who develop talent at a pro level with him.

Eric Bieniemy, Mike Kafka, Leslie Frazier or Ken Dorsey would be interesting, maybe.

IDK... it may be better to stick with someone who knows the college ranks, but interesting to discuss, as it is a possibility

... His defensive philosophy has several hallmarks.

    • Speed over size and strength. Coordinators that employ Kiffin-style defenses will often replace linebackers with safeties in order to put more speed on the field. In particular, linebackers must be able to cover receivers; in the Tampa 2 scheme, one linebacker frequently drops back deep into coverage, turning what looks like a Cover 2 defense into a Cover 3. Kiffin's defenses also employ quick, penetrating defensive tackles.
    • Preventing scores over preventing yardage. A Kiffin coordinator doesn't care how many yards an offense gains, as long as the team doesn't score, an approach known as bend-but-don't-break.
    • Multiple defenses from one look. Kiffin-style defenses try to use the same personnel (or the same kind of personnel) at all times, so that the offense cannot adjust its play call based on the alignment of the defensive personnel.
    • Attacking and causing turnovers. Kiffin-style defenses focus on getting the ball away from the offense by stripping the ball away from the ball carrier or reading the quarterback to make an interception. The risk is that if the ball is not stripped or intercepted, then the ball carrier on offense has a better chance of gaining more yards or scoring; the reward is that the offensive drive is stopped without a score more often, frequently giving good field position."

I'd be cool with that Defensive look... I'm assuming we move to 4-man line, if so (although you could run Tampa 2 outta a 3-man line).

Was getting tired of the 3-man front, anyway.

I always assumed attacking defense was contradictory to Bend-But-Don't-Break; but this explains how that's not exactly true...

Do you have any idea how often he blitzes?

Trev doesn't have the luxury of waiting to see how the recruiting class is ranked to make a judgment on MJ.  He needs a coach in place who he knows is a good recruiter & builder well in advance of the early signing date.

I agree, but one can generally get a sense of how good a recruiting class will end up being by around the end of the season (around the same time period of deciding who the next HC will be).

I forgot that open transfer portal makes things weird, as well.

Regardless, our class is currently at around 50-40, so this point may end up being moot.

  13. I'm still in the belief that we need a HC that is proven to send guys to the NFL... I also believe that the ability to pull top recruiting classes needs to taken into consideration (high draft classes typically lead to top recruiting classes); but I want a HC who can say that he knows what NFL teams are looking for, and knows how to develop and send his guys PRO.

Obvi, my top pick is Urban... but, if Mickey can have moderate success this season (2 or 3 more wins), AND pulls a top 25(ish) recruiting class (especially after this debacle of a season), I would be more than on board for making him permanent.

  14. In my opinion, Nebraska can only sell itself to recruits via elite facilities + elite fanbase (NIL)

I think we need a coach who can sell himself on being a winner, and a history of sending kids to the pros... because Nebraska can't sell either of those, at this point in time (not even close)

I think that is what top recruits look for, above any other deciding factors (with exception of location, for some kids).

With all that said... Urban Meyer is the first that comes to (my) mind. Lane Kiffin seems like a name that can sell that (to a degree).

As a Raider fan, I've always wondered what Jon Gruden can do in the college ranks... I doubt most our fans would be interested in that name; but it is an intriguing name.

Some of the best surgeons are sociopaths or psychopaths. A higher percentage than other other groups. That’s an extreme. It usually isn’t what’s portrayed in movies. They can be particularly nasty no less. And it wouldn’t be accurate to say all of them are. Far from it. Point being, highly successful professionals aren’t necessarily bad characters.

“Skeletons” can mean a variety of things. I would say very few of us don’t have them.

Soooo... Some surgeons have literal skeletons in their closet?
