I ask the question bc I could see a border coach taking a long time to rebuild this program. At least 2-3 years it will take that's my belief. I don't see us making much improvement in year one for sure so that's why I said 2-3 years. If its not a border coach and it is a well established coach then I could see year one improvement. Are the fans ok with waiting that long for improvement and supporting the administration and coaches?

Nope, not me. All these other hot up and coming programs had a coach that was winning by year two (sometimes year one). That's why we need Urban -- he'd pluck 5 star talent from the portal non stop before next season. A big name at coach attracts big talent.

Any hire that isn't Urban is a HUGE miss to me.

I too would prefer a few names on your list over the initial 4 that are rumored.  But, I also would have those guys in my top 20?  I will also say that I am not sure we can "get anyone we want"....that ship sailed about the year 2000.  Money is not the issue for some of these guys.  Prime Time is not hurting for $$, just like Urban is not eating beans either.  I also am not sure I want a coach here ONLY because we offered him a large amount of money.  That guy could easily just go through the motions and cash a check, and at the end of the day walk away with a big fat buyout.  How about a guy who WANTS to be here !!!

You get what you pay for in this world (if you’re lucky).

Urban commands at least $12 million and I’ve no doubt we cheaped out. Same with the other guys on my list.

    1. These are 4 names among dozens that have been bandied about for the last two months, without ever getting any actual verification from any reliable source. No need to read too much into this.

    2. Out of everything Husker fans have been through, this article is what makes you feel like crying? Good god, man.

    3. We did not need another godd@mn separate thread about the muckerfuthing coaching search!

The search is clearly winding down. And then this info got leaked and reported (probably on purpose as a trial balloon). And yes, this article make me want to weep because it shows me that this 20-year nightmare isn’t likely to end any time soon.

For conversation place, may I ask "who" you want (realistically).... Prime and Urban are pipe dreams.... I am not arguing with you, just would like to see your opinion, before you get drunk...ha

I could name 20, but here are a few for starters: Aranda, O’Brien, Beliema, Meyer (yes, we’d have a shot), and Fleck. We could get any of these guys if we were willing to pay up.

By early Thursday evening, Football Scoop, a well-connected clearinghouse for college coaching news, packed four names — current interim coach Mickey Joseph, Army coach Jeff Monken, Matt Rhule and Gary Patterson — into a vague report about Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts’ search for a coach.

If these are our four options, them I’m OUT. For good this time. These four people will not be successful here. If one of these four people are given the job, we will be going through this same process 3-4 years from now and Trev will be looking for his next gig at South Dakota or Buffalo. These four options are utterly unacceptable…ugh.

Time for me to get drunk and cry now.

It seems like the 3 most common names we are hearing about are Rhule, Aranda and Joseph.  Are there others that were talked about on 1620 the zone today?  Here are some pros and cons I see with these 3 guys:

    1. Mickey Joseph

    • Pros:
      • Very passionate about landing this job
      • Bleeds Husker Red
      • Amazing recruiter and motivator
    • Cons:
      • Lack of Head Coaching Experience (This is a big con)
      • Uncertainty with how he would build a staff

    2.  Matt Rhule:

    • Pros:
      • Greatly improved Temple and Baylor in 4 years and 3 years, respectively
      • Has most head coaching experience of the 3 candidates being considered
    • Cons:
      • Is 2-16 vs ranked teams including 0-11 at Baylor
      • Is noted as having a "culture of losing" at Carolina
      • Not a great recruiter

    3.  Dave Aranda

    • Pros:
      • Most defensive minded of the 3
      • Good teacher/motivator of athletes
      • Won a major bowl (Sugar Bowl)
    • Cons:
      • Less than 3 full years of HC experience currently
      • Has not landed a top 25 recruiting team

Dave will work hard and will do a great job. For $7.5 million per year, I'd work hard too.

    Gotcha.

I was responding specifically about Joseph to another poster, but I can see how it could get more broadly interpreted.

    We'll know soon enough.

But yes, I believe Joseph has a thing or two in his favor.

You believe MJ is being considered for the full-time HC position? After the IL game? Not a chance.

lol, offer being made??  s#!ttt, if there was any liklihood of urban coming to lincoln an offer would have been made a f'n month ago.

Now, if u saying an announcement is imminent, well alrighty then

Official offers don't get made for a position such as this unless they know the answer is going to be in the affirmative.

When you hear of a P5 HC "turning down" an offer - it's almost always a situation where they were approached and asked if there was any interest if terms could be agreed upon by both parties and they replied "No thank you" prior to substantive negotiations.

I think this is nonsense. KU won 20 games total in the 11 years prior to Leipold taking over in 2021. He has been able to get that program turned in the right direction in his second year despite not getting there until late May 2021. And NU has way more to offer in just about every respect compared to KU. Facilities, NIL, B1G money to pay HC & assistants, fan support, one of  top 2 conferences in the country.

Are we going to get an elite coach? Almost certainly not but to think nobody that can turn this program around will come to NU is ridiculous.

Why do you say that? I think (and fully expect) that we will get a proven winner, big name coach this time. Meyer or Bielema.

There is so much wrong with this program right now….and talent level is down the list a bit. With some of the effort we saw on the field on Saturday, there is a severe attitude problem.  We need a coach that knows how to fix that first.  If that doesn’t get fixed, we will have the same crap.

Urban has us winning the Big Ten West by Year 2.

My gut says Deion holds out for a P5 job in the south, Urban holds out for a P5 job where 5-stars line up to play. I still think Aranda is in play, which I would be more than happy with.

My gut says it's hungry, but beyond that I believe we have a realistic shot at getting Urban. As a matter of fact, I'd guess he's the leading contender at this point (and that's assuming Trev hasn't already offered it to him and he accepted).

Or coordinators.  For example, would a guy like Grinch come here?  He makes $1.08 million at USC.  Walters in year 2 has been impressive at Illinois, but some say he will go to CU.

With the bolded, if we can't get "that guy", I still like Chadwell.  Need a solid DC though.

Trev, PLEASE don't hire a coordinator from somewhere else as our HC...go big or go home.
