  1. I’m not sure what the O’Brien hate is all about. Alabama’s defense has been what’s costing them games lately. They put up 49 points against Tennessee and still lost. That’s not on the OC. O’Brien took over Penn State during a difficult time and managed a solid record. He wouldn’t be the worst hire ever, but if he is the best Trev can do, he should stick with Mickey.

Knew Urban didn't run a clean program at Florida. Had no idea it was this bad. I thought in Nebraska we want our coaches to teach young men to not just be winners, but also winners in the game of life.

Also find it funny people are clamoring for Lane Kiffin. He's the anti Urban Meyer. Urban despite his personality flaws wins everywhere he goes so he keeps getting chances. Kiffin ruins the program or screws over the school everywhere he goes and somehow keeps getting chances. It's pretty remarkable.

Football is a dirty game all around. No elite program is truly clean. As much as we all loved the Tom Osborne years, he covered up crimes committed by his players on a frequent basis. Whether you love or hate Urban, he is one of the top 3 coaches in the last twenty years and would have this program as one of the elite programs in college football by year 3. There is no other candidate mentioned you can say that about with any kind of confidence.

I’m not a Christian at all, but he keeps on saying that his players don’t deserve to be payed while he makes $11 million a year. Seems hypocrital to me. On top of that, he supports the previous president and his actions.

The one that’s still coaching and has never been fired

So let me get this straight, any coach that has ever had a scandal should not be hired by NU? That eliminates quite a few coaches. I guarantee you Meyer is not the only coach to have a random girl grind on him. Art Briles only got in trouble because he was at Baylor. If he would have been at Alabama, nothing would have happened to him.

Oh- so this is you determining who the nice guys are?  And Kirby Smart and Dabo Sweeney say “hi”

sometimes you just have to quit

I’ll give you Dabo (though I think he’s faking it), but Smart by all accounts is very similar to Saban.

  6. To cite some other examples, Bob Stoops and Art Briles were also considered douches. We all know what happened at Baylor, but Stoops let Joe Mixon continue to play for Oklahoma after he knocked out a girl. What do both of these coaches have in common? They were both hated, but they won a lot of games. I say screw the nice guys and make a real commitment towards being elite again. Meyer would accomplish that within three years with all the resources that are present at NU.

Tell me more about Saban? Never heard he was grabby-grabby. And Paterno? How many natties does he have? Lol!!!

Go read about some of the stuff Saban did when he was at Miami. He cussed out his own secretary, wouldn’t talk to co-workers that tried to say hi to him as they walked by, and had his own players wanting to fight him. He may not be as bad as Switzer, Meyer, or Paterno, but he is still a giant a-hole. Paterno did win a natty. I’m just saying that most of the top coaches are typically douches.

Why isn’t Zac Smith coaching?  Hard to coach jail?

I love how you guys are using examples of how poor character equates to being a good football coach with guys that are not even coaching anymore.

What has a Bible-thumping coach won recently?

Look at all the natty-winning coaches in the past 50 years. Switzer, Paterno, Meyer, and Saban all have skeletons in their closets. No one considers any of those guys “nice guys” either. Being a sleaze bag is kind of a pre requisite for winning natties.

You logic makes Zak Smith the best choice for Meyer's WR coach.

I don't condone what he did, but he was a good recruiter for OSU. On top of that, he seems to have learned from his mistakes and turned his life around. Zak Smith just proves my point even further that being dirty more times than not yields wins. Football is not supposed to be Sunday school.

Again, I ask how you can put both of those in the same sentence? And how can you classify Aranda as elite? Anyone with a conference title is elite to you? I like you and agree with much of what you say, but this one is a real head scratcher to me.

Mike Gundy has one conference title at Okie State in 18 years, yet most people on this board think he's elite. Aranda won two games his first year and turned that team into a conference champion a year later. I will concede that there is a possibility it could have been a product of Rhule's recruiting, but he would still be the best hire NU has made since Solich based on resume alone.

Easier said than done.  I would love urban to be the guy, i want excellence, but i think if this was even remotely realistic we would have seen more traction and even an annoucnement so he can get ahead of recruiting as much as possible.

Who outside of urban qualifies as elite to you or is it 1 guy and 1 guy only trev could hire that would appease the fans?

    Chris Petersen or Aranda.

Dude, swearing/saying something that hurts someone’s feelings is not the same thing as covering up domestic violence, etc.

Look, I’m not saying what he’s done should take him off our list entirely like an Art Briles. He’s just not my first choice anymore. I think there are better options. And more than anything, he doesn’t fit what Trev described he wants.

I just think now is the time for this program to make an elite hire. This is a point in time where the job is very attractive due to all the buzz around the new Big 10 media rights, NIL being introduced, and the facility upgrades. The program gave up an extra $7.5 million to let Frost go two weeks earlier. Money is obviously not an object for NU. If they hire a Matt Campbell or Bill O'Brien, Trev is telling the fans that NU is not serious about being elite again. Hiring someone like Urban would be NU telling the fans that they are serious about being elite. Sometimes when it comes to winning, certain incidents have to be ignored.

Well, there's nice guys and then there's just flat out sleaze bags. I've reluctantly been on the hire Urban train (reluctantly because I don't like his character issues) this whole time, but after going back and listening to Trev, I just don't see it happening. This interview is pretty cringe. I know he thought he was doing it for damage control, but it had the opposite effect on me...

Some things are more important than football. Not many, but some.

Saban is a giant sleaze bag too, but I highly doubt there's a single Alabama fan that cares. The guy literally made players cry while he was in the NFL and I'm sure it's happened plenty since he's been at Alabama. He also openly swears during interviews occasionally. It seems to be working out well for Alabama lately.

  15. Does anyone else on this board seriously believe other coaches don’t cover up abuse? It’s sad, but it happens all the time. For me, I’m tired of the nice guys. They always finish last. NU has been trying nice guys for nearly two decades and look how far it has gotten the program. If there is even a small chance someone of Urban’s caliber wants the job, Trev needs to capitalize on the opportunity. I hate to break it to everyone else on here, but Osborne also covered up abuse and a whole bunch of other crimes committed by his players, yet most of our fans worship the guy. He was dirty like Urban, but he won at a high level. This game requires coaches to be dirty if they want to win anything significant. That is just the reality of the sport. Our program isn’t as clean as most of the fans think it is. Hiring Urban would be far from the worst act committed by this program and that’s a fact.

How does he plan on getting the talent? He can’t get it in Texas. You think he’ll somehow magically be able to get it in Nebraska? And he doesn’t seem to be getting more out of his talent this year.

You have to look at the context. He barely won a Big 12 Championship ( beat a team that had already beat him in the regular season and lost to a 5-7 TCU team)  when OU and UT we’re both down. Sark was in his first year and Riley had a foot out the door.

And again, likely to not make a bowl this year. How is that good enough? He’s worse than Campbell and that’s saying a lot.

Baylor had a lot of turnover this year. They lost their best running back and most of their defense from last year. They simply had too much turnover to be a legitimate team again this season. No matter how you slice it, winning a conference title in his second season at Baylor is quite impressive.

    petersen >>>>> aranda

Sorry, just not getting the love for aranda. At All. He’s in a recruiting hotbed, hasn’t recruited for s#!t, had one good year with Rhule’s players when the Big 12 was down, and he’s probably not making a bowl this year. How is he supposed to improve Nebraska?

Aranda won the Big 12 title game with a backup QB last year. He completely ruined Okie State’s playoff hopes. Pretty impressive if you ask me. It tells me that he gets the most out of the talent he gets, which is something NU has not had in a while.
