I still think it’s highly unlikely that we lure a guy who’s currently doing well where he is. Best bets are: A) failing NFL coach (Rhule); B) current coordinator looking to take the next step (O’Brien, etc) or C) someone currently not coaching (Meyer, Petersen, etc.).

You're missing a pretty obvious D) someone who's doing well as a head coach at a lower tier who wants to take the next step. I mean, that's probably like 75% of coaching changes.

Landing Aranda probably isn't realistic but I'd want him over Fickell.

    Why?

    13 hours ago, Hilltop said:

Why would you take Arranda over any of the three I listed?  I just don't get it.  The guy took Baylor over after Matt Rhule just went 11-3 in 2019 and went 2-7 in 2020.  Then with Matt's recruits, he went 12-2 last year and is 2-1 this year with a loss to BYU.  26 total games... That is the extent of his head coaching experience.  As a defensive coordinator he had some great results from 2012 - 2016 but he fell off in 2018 and 2019 to pretty average numbers at LSU.

Maybe he would do good here but, to me, there just isn't enough resume there to justify the salary it would take to pull him.

    This ^

I just don't get all the love for Aranda. I mean, he might be okay I guess. But some of y'all are acting like he's the second coming, with literally nothing to base that on.

Or, we could just simply hire Art Briles.  I mean everyone seems to be so high on Urban Meyer.  Is there really that much of a difference between the two?  If former Lancaster County Attorney Gary Lacey was still alive, we could ask him if either of the two are much different than a coach who once roamed the sideline.

Yes, huge difference. Briles is second only to Sandusky in terms of sleaziness. We're talking scum of the earth s#!t. Not only tolerated, but enabled an entire culture of multiple players raping women for years at Baylor. Briles was so toxic after that mess that he couldn't get a job as a janitor for any program in the country. Had a stint in Italy where they didn't know his history. A CFL team tried to hire him and the public backlash was so bad he was fired before he even started. He finally landed at a small east Texas high school town that is pretty much 100% Baptist where their mentality was that they should forgive all of his sins to win football games. Then I think he got caught cheating there too and was eventually forced to resign. That dude is beyond sleazy. Urban's just a little sleazy comparatively.

Correct, firms just offer cover. Facilitating hotel conference rooms, private jets, scheduling and structuring evaluation and interview questions in some cases.

The only interesting things about this one are that they have the playbook on poaching from a blue blood and they have Luke Fickell's cell. Not much else.

They did do a hell of a job at keeping the Lincoln Riley thing under wraps. Pretty much announced officially the same day as the leaks started IIRC. There were some minor rumblings throughout the season that Riley wasn't happy at OU, but I don't think anyone saw the USC thing coming.

Why would we need a search firm to hire Trev? Sounds like huge waste of money.

I've always kind of felt like search firms are more to provide a layer of cover and act as the school's agent more than actually identifying candidates. Allows active coaches to say things like "I've never been contacted by the University of Nebraska" and allows the firm to put out initial feelers without anyone knowing who it's for. Trev doesn't pick up the phone and call the coach directly and say, "Hey, you interested in the Nebraska job?" He makes that call the the search firm, who makes that call to the agent, who makes that call to the coach. It's like having a buyer's agent and a seller's agent in real estate. You may find the house you want yourself, then you let the agents hammer out the details for you. They're just another go-between to keep things cleaner.

Whatchu mean 5-3 or 6-2 he "may have a shot"...???  Or 4-4 there is not really a chance...???

Yes, the OU game would have been a complete throttling with xHCSF.  And yes, the players were grieving losing their coach.  And yes, they had a few practices the week before the game.  And yes, it is not a fair test.

If the Huskers go 5-3 or 6-2..... or even 4-4 the rest of the way, considering 2 coach firings...  How could this not be an amazing turnaround worthy of being retained head coach ?????

    5-3... 6-2.... 4-4..... not good enough today ???

    Huskers Big Ten record:

    2021  1-8

    2020  3-5

    2019  3-6

    2018  3-6

    2017  3-6

2016  6-3  (but, but it's Mike Riley tho)

    2015  3-5

Do you (not you personally, but anyone here) think the Huskers have to go 5-3 or 6-2 to "maybe have a shot" for Mickey Joseph to be the head coach at Nebraska ???  And that "4 wins in the conference" isn't good enough ???  From everything that just happened this year?  Wow.... I would scream for Mickey to be retained...

My biggest issue with Mickey is his lack of experience. I think it's funny that a lot of guys on here think this candidate and that candidate don't have enough experience as a head coach at whatever level. Yet, MJ makes sense to them. He made sense to get the interim nod I guess. But he's never even been a coordinator.  I do think Deion would keep Mickey on staff though.

Urban is intriguing- like being at the bar when a hot girl asks you to do a shot of tequila.  It sounds fun, and you know it will feel great for a while but you know what tomorrow is going to bring.

I think it's more like doing the shots with the hot girl at the bar, taking her home, waking up feeling like a$$, then spending the next few months worried about having knocked her up. If she ends up not being pregnant, then it was a hell of a night and totally worth it. If she does pop positive, well...

Looks like it was merged into the who is next HC thread. Which is silly imo. It is not like 162 page  threads are soooo much more streamlined then a new topic here or there. But alas, not my board I guess.

Ah, gotcha. I'm a newb and still figuring things out around here. My bad.

Yeah, all coaching change discussions in one thread for pretty much the only thing we'll have to talk about for the next 2+ months seems like a lot. I'm all for not starting a new thread for every random thought. But I think each (legitimate) candidate could at least have their own thread. But, yeah not my call either.

I'm quite sure we have different opinions on better.  If I was an 18-22 year old highly skilled player, I would much rather play and practice in Phoenix, AZ than Lincoln, NE.  Arizona State has had four All Americans in the last decade.  Nebraska has had none.  I would venture to guess Deion would have better recruiting classes at Arizona State than he would have at Nebraska.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. No way is ASU a better job than Nebraska.

I agree with most of your posts in this ridiculous thread but I would put auburn above us if it became available.  Even tho they are 2nd fiddle in their state, they are surrounded by talent everywhere, have been a consistent top program when they have their s#!t together and have won a title in the past decade.  If I look at this from a pure neutral where can I win the quickest with the talent to do so, auburn is more attractive than us

Other than that, agree with everything.

Yeah, I might concede Auburn. Definitely a better geographical/cultural fit for Deion. I just think having to go head-to-head with Alabama & Georgia is a losing proposition right from the jump.

You do realize when "coaches" make choices on where "they want to coach", there are other intangibles taken into consideration besides facilities right?  Like local schools, local food, local fans, local entertainment, people? I mean there is a reason Lincoln Riley went to USC, and it wasn't because of facilities.

When did I ever say we were the best job on the market just because of our facilities? Of course there's more to it than that. And, since this is the Deion thread...have you ever been to Jackson, MS? The whole town looks like an episode of The First 48.

I just think we have one of the most PRIVILEGED fan-bases in ALL OF College Football! So much so it's clouding the minds of regular everyday normal fans about where we are as a program in 2022.

No we're not. And I've been around a few. We're right in line with other blue bloods and better than some.

Maybe I misinterpreted what you were saying.  I thought you meant there isn't a job out there better than Nebraska.  Apparently, you meant there isn't a job that is open that is better than Nebraska.  I really only know of two openings at the moment being Arizona State and Nebraska because we are barely into the season.  Both fired coaches near the beginnings of their fifth year.  Herm Edwards was 26-20 at Arizona State while Frost was 16-31.  Arizona State made it to three bowl games in the past five years while Nebraska has made zero.  I guess it all depends on one's definition of a better program, but to some/many Arizona State might very well look like the better program.  I'm not sure I like our odds for Deion against Arizona State.

Considering Sark has already been terminated once before during the season, I don't think it's impossible.  I also don't think it's impossible for him to be fired at seasons end if they implode.  Freeman probably doesn't get canned this year.

There's not an available job or likely to be available job this year better than Nebraska. And that's not just me being a homer. Last year was a bad year to be hiring. This year does not appear to be stacking up that way at all.

I found this funny from Sipple on Sharp & Benning.

When asked about the Feldman report and his thoughts on the search, Sipple said: "I'm not really trying to find out exactly what's going on because its so early... It doesn't make sense for me to pour energy into it each day"

So, pretty much the opposite of me? Got it.

I feel like many people feel this way about a few coaches and have felt the same way in the past and then that coach gets hired somewhere else and lights it up.  Then everyone is saying we should have hired that guy.  Sometimes you have to take that chance.

Yep, outside of Urban, the rest of the realistic list is just hopeful prospect up-and-comers. I don't see Deion as much less of an up-and-comer prospect than anyone else on the list. Sure, his head coaching experience is at a slightly lower level, but not by much. Let's not act like Iowa State, Kansas and the like are some college football juggernauts compared to Jackson State. They all suck. But none of those guys is Deion effin Sanders. And Deion is recruiting at a much higher level for Jackson State than most/all of the others. Look at last year's national recruiting rankings (per 247Sports)...

    #55 Jackson State

    #59 Iowa State

    #63 Kansas

If you continue to say the bolded, does it eventually make it true?  While it might be premature, if Sark doesn't get it turned around at Texas they might have an opening.  Texas is a better job than Nebraska.  Notre Dame might be looking to make a change as well, and I would say it is a better job than Nebraska.  Urban has already turned Notre Dame down once before when he accepted the job at Florida.  Urban is a very opportunistic coach.  He chose Florida over Notre Dame because Zook left Florida with a lot of athletic talent.  Plus, the SEC then wasn't the SEC now.  The SEC had only won two NCs the previous decade when Urban started at Florida.  Tennessee had already fallen on hard times, and LSU didn't have Saban any longer.  The conference was primed for a coach to take over.  The same can be said about the B1G when Urban started at Ohio State.  Ohio State was loaded with talent, and there weren't any big time coaches in the conference.  This is what makes Nebraska quite a bit different than his last two jobs in college football.  We aren't exactly stacked with talent, and we're not in a recruiting hotbed like Florida or Ohio.  While Nebraska might be a better job than most, there are still several jobs better than Nebraska.  If Urban is looking for redemption, I wouldn't be shocked to see him take a job of the west coast.

Sark is in year 2 and just signed the best quarterback recruit in like the history of ever. Freeman is in year one. Short of either of them having some sort of off the field scandal or getting hired away by a better program (which also doesn't exist), Sark and Freeman aren't going anywhere this year. Period.

West coast like who? UCLA which isn't even the best program in town, let alone the state of Californa or the west coast. Oregon? Lanning is in year one, so see above. Washington? DeBoer is in year one and looks to be doing just fine.

So, again, name a better program even remotely likely to have an opening.

    Let my dream live!

In all seriousness, Deion has an ability to turn the flash on and off masterfully when needed. He's kind of like Drake, which is part of what makes Drake so ridiculously  successful. Dude can thug it up with every rapper from the hood and turn around and sit in a meeting with old white jewish label execs seamlessly. Deion can do that too, but most of what the public sees (or wants to see) is just the former. He's also a man of strong faith and sells all the off the field things parents want to hear. Moms love him.
