Pelini the prankster: Worst practice ever

Bo Pelini met the media Thursday and, with disgusted expression, immediately declared: "That was the worst practice I've been a part of in all my years of coaching."

    Pause.

    "Just kidding."

Turns out it was pretty good. "No, good for late in the week. I thought the intensity was good. We made some mistakes. There are some corrections to be made, but not bad, not bad."

Saturday's game captains will be Nate Swift, Todd Peterson, Ty Steinkuhler and Alex Henery.

Pelini seemed skeptical that Lydon Murtha and Rickey Thenarse would play Saturday. "They haven't had much practice this week, so..." he said. Thenarse was in street clothes during the practice.

About recruits, Pelini said he thought there'd be six official visitors this weekend.

"It's a good group. On a game weekend, you can't have too many. You just can't accomodate too many and do it the right way."

Pelini said he feels some of the communication issues seen in the opener have improved this week. "There's still guys who are a little indecisive, or not too sure of themselves. It's like, 'Go ahead. Make your call. Communicate.' It's getting better, but it's not as consistent as I would like it to be."

Asked about Phillip Dillard playing every snap at linebacker last Saturday, Pelini said: "We don't sub our linebackers a whole heck of a lot. Some. But the guys behind them are young and inexperienced. It depends on the situation of the game and how the game goes, but we have guys ready to go. We rep our guys pretty equally during the week so we'll be ready to go."

Seems like there are always mistakes and they're always taking steps to correct them. So, get 'em corrected already!!!........(Just kidding)...I'm sure mistakes will continue to occur right through the bowl season.

  2. I found this old thread on like page 137 or something like that....I was looking to see what everyone was saying during the transitional year.....

Just wanted to say that Kyle Orton's dad, Byron Orton, was an all-state tight end and punter at Auburn Nebraska High School back in the fall of 1967....That's why Kyle was always an avid Husker fan....

By the way, is he still with the Bears?.....

  3. I saw this topic started on another board and thought it would be interesting to try to come up with a concensus as to what individual performances were the greatest ever against the Huskers.

These are the two best that I've personally witnessed....

Curt Warner/ Penn State Running Back/ 1981/ Ran for 238 yards in Lincoln.

    Troy Edwards/ Louisiana Tech Receiver/ 1998/ 21 receptions for 405 yards!@!

  4. Still another:

"Wahoo" Sam Crawford, Wahoo, MLB Hall of Fame

Ron Kellogg, Omaha Northwest, Started four years in b-ball at KU

    Monte Kiffin, Lexington

Mick Tinglehoff, Lexington, 10-time all-pro center with Vikings

Zane Smith, North Platte, Pitcher w/braves

Marlin Briscoe, Omaha South, 1st black NFL qb, (Denver) also all-pro wide receiver with Bills and Dolphins

Guy Chamberlain, Blue Springs, Pro Football Hall of Fame

  5. Michigan last ditch kickoff return

It wasn't actually a kickoff return if it's the one from the recent Alamo Bowl. It was actually a play from scrimmage, a hook and ladder play if i recall. Anyway, that is awesome that we have that many in there.

    You're right.....it was a play from scrimmage....I stand humbly corrected!! :)

  6. Boise State with two in one game.....good point

Anyone remember when John O'Leary ran in untouched against Mizzou on a fake punt.? I believe that the ball was short snapped to a blocker who hid it beneath is posterior then O'Leary took it from him...

Florida State did the same thing a few years later and their play made it into the top 100.....

  7. Sorry If this has been posted before. Best Damn Sports show showed their top 100 football plays of all time including high school, college and pro. The Huskers had quite a showing.

    In their top 100

    Crouch run against Missouri

    Steinkhuhler fumblerooski

    Michigan last ditch kickoff return

    Davison catch against Missouri

    Frazier run against Florida

The last two, I believe were in the the top 10.

To be featured in 5% of the top plays of all time, high school, college and pro, suggests quite a wild ride!!
