  1. Those are two things we were lacking prior to his arrival. Most media had our program done long before Frank left.

If this was true then why have all of the NFL Draft pick (with the exception of B Jax) been Frank's kids? Does "being done" include when Frank was coaching for a National Championship in 2001?

We are not a top 10 program at this time.

Are you Bill Callahan? You sure sound like he did after the Cotton Bowl. Like Stew Bradley said, "Don't tell the players were are not a top 10 team."

but the program overall is in better shape than I can ever remember it being.

You must have not been a Husker fan for long. This program was in okay shape in the 90's, winning championships with "subpar" talent, graduating kids, academic All-Americans, Rhodes Scholars.

(Cue the tired old Christian Peter/Lawrence Phillips CBS takes)

And I also agree that our recruiting has not been as good as some seem to think. We are not near the top programs in talent, never really have been. Our top recruiting class was a flop with all the defections. But they keep working toward depth and talent. Even now some are saying we have the number one class this year. Not even close at this time. Some read more into recruiting than is actually there.

I agree with you on this point, but which one is it, are we at the top level recruiting or are we well below the top teams. You are contradicting yourself bud.

Without the marbles, it is hard to play the game.

Ask Boise State about that. You also have to know how to play the game, with or without the marbles. That's called good coaching.

At some point all the talk about recruiting, West Coast Offense, "NFL Style Defense," "closing the gap" blah, blah, blah, needs to stop. Give us something. Winning the worst division in major college football on a down year doesn't mean anything. Do something more than average 5 losses a year and actually finish in the top 20 and your argument might have merit.

  2. I can understand how some people want to try and forget about the past as in not live in the past and move on with what is NU football now. I really don't agree with us treating former players badly if that is indeed what is going on. We should always welcome our past football players back with open arms and treat them as family because they are part of Husker Nation. I know that some people constantly want us to go back to what was NU football and that just isn't going to happen unfortunately.

i don't expect to live in the past, but i do expect the current coaches and adminstration to embrace the tradtions and solidify the contributitions of past players/coaches that helped start and make the tradition/program the huge success as it is now known. this is just an extention of successful recruiting, you show that you care and retain the favoritism of the past alumni and players, as they are the mouth-piece and promoters of continued successful recruiting, period. to ignore them, exclude them and not make them feel really welcome, is to negate their future influence and support of the program.

example, ever watch a USC or Ohio State game and see the former greats on the sidelines? you think that doesn't have a huge effect on future recruiting? this is another example of a huge asset, possibly being squandered by a guy who is used to getting players through the draft or free agency at the pro level. on the college level all you have is your school's reputation and history of success. when you have a great tradition like ours, you should be smart enough to take advantage of it constantly and showcase the past greats as well as recruiting the next ones. being "exclusive" does nothing for your program. i think Ped especially needs to re think the way he "projects" our program as we seldom see any of our past big names on the sidelines or promoting the school. i just don't see this changing and i am saddened by the perception that is being projected by the current administration.

    Great take!

  3. "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" reported that Keller isn't well liked by the team and that they would rather have Ganz start. Keller is a little too "take charge" while Ganz is one of the boys. If that is the case then it's no wonder why we can't finish in the top 25. If you don't like someone gettting on your ass a little bit then you are soft.

If that is where you get the majority of your Husker information it's no wonder you act like you do. You bring nothing to this board and your constant negativity is really pathetic. I'm all for differing viewpoints, but you dont' have a viewpoint, you have an agenda. It's obvious and it's pathetic. Don't you have better things to do with your time than get on the internet and slam everything about the current Nebraska Football program?

Sence you know everything there is about the program why don't you tell me where I should get "real" Husker information. Forgive me from getting some of my info from the independent, impartial media. Maybe I should only use the information supplied to us by the athletic department and the Husker Sports Network because they don't have an agenda or credibility issues right?

I do have an agenda-talking the Huskers. I know this may shock you but everything is not perfect with the program. Sometimes we have to accept it. Just because you don't like talking about it doesn't mean that it's not so. Hiding from it doesn't make it go away.

  4. I'm not saying he was right or wr...ong but I can't believe you guys are killing a Husker apologist like Shatel. I agree, it takes a big man to admit he is wrong.

    maybe he's a "former" fan

No I love the program and will always be a Husker. I just have a few questions about the program and its direction. I want to discuss it with my fellow Husker brothers and sisters.

  5. Ya well FU... :asshat ....I think MY response was a well thought out response to the stupid, outlandish, off-base 'opinions' I've been reading.

I'm sure you do and to quote Jack Nicholson (in his response to writing a book from the viewpoint of a woman) "I wrote as if I were a man and removed all sensiblity and accountability."

By the way, will you acknowlege the great things Coach Callahan has done for the Lincoln and surrounding communities? What about the run he has for Breast Cancer???? ... What about taking the players to the local hospitals?

What did the former HC ever do? I really do not know.

I can't comment on Callahan's intent, but those charitable organizations and foundations he "participates" in are part of his contract. As for former coaches and players, trips to the hospitals to visit with sick kids is something that has been going on ever since I can remember (25+ years). The former coaches has foundations that they participated in too so to steal a line from you "Get over yourself."

  7. The current staff really has no ties to these players.

Do the players want to just sit around and jabber jaw with a staff they have no connection with? I could understand stopping by if you wanted to talk to an former coach or trainer of yours, but to just stop by unannouced and expect to be lauded by some sort of reception by people you have no connection with is kind of impractical isn't it?

I agree that there is no personal relationship between then but they are all supposed to be Huskers, a family. The former players certainly are.

OK, I've been reading about this 'rift' for weeks now. ENOUGH!!!

God I am so sick and tired of all the cryin' and whinin' from FORMER players. 'I don't feel comfortable', 'I don't feel welcome', 'I don't know anyone anymore', whaaa! whaa! whaa! For gods sake, just call the AD, call Coach Callahan and ASK/REQUEST that you want to be at a practice!!! It's not that hard..Really!!! Coach Callahan, I'm sure, will welcome you. No problem.

Who in the hell do these FORMER players think they are??? I swear!!! Coach Callahan is in know way going to know every single former player. Not happening, however, I'm sure he will welcome them with open arms...the former need to quit being dicks because the old school is gone. It needed to be gone. They need to get behind this program, the players and coaches NOW or just fade away and STFU.

If this were a corporation and you were a former employee, you still have to check in at the front would be my guess...

oh yeah, Tom Osborne DOES NOT WALK ON WATER AND HE IS NOT GOD AND HE IS NOT NEBRASKA FOOTBALL!!! I'm sure I'll catch hell for that one....don't care!

And the AD is more than likely not going anywhere any time soon. You all know he is a Nebraska boy don't you??? I thought that was the prerequisite(sp) for all things NE??? You know, that infamous Nebraska Way...whatever the hell that is.

You all need to get aboard or get off...enough whining! This isn't grade school playgroung time folks!!!

Done now...I've been wanting to get tis ouot for a week now...thanks for the therapy.

And I apologize for the mispelled words...I'm just so sick of hearing/reading about SP this,TO that...UGH...

This is one of the dumbest posts I have ever read. My IQ dropped about 75 points for reading it. Without the committment, hardwork, and success of the former players there would be no skyboxes, no Steve Pederson, University of Nebraska Athletic Director, no Bill Callahan, Head Coach-University of Nebraska, etc. While they may not have to roll out the red carpet for every one, they should still be considered part of the Husker family and treated as such. If there still is a Husker family.

  8. Clester Johnson was on the radio earlier today and mentioned that there are lots of different things that have been done and that many former players are upset but he was not too specific. One thing that he mentioned personally was that when he goes down to the athletic department instead of them saying welcoming former players they have a "What are you doing here?" attitude. He mentioned that Tommie Frazier (a guy who happened to work under Pederson) mentioned that the only time former players hear from the athletic department is when they need money (donations and appearances) and they don't even pretend to be concerned about the players personally. Also mentioned that Tom Osborne never received an invite to the athletic department's event until it became known that he was attending the "Real Husker" event and he said that he never received an invite to the other event.

An a-hole caller ripped Clester and all the other former players to which Clester mentioned that you can't just have a "get onboard and get over it" attitude because without the former players coaches and staff there would be no program as we know it.

  9. It's good to see them recognizing how bad our return game was last year and trying to fix it and early!!!! The bigger problem than this is second half play and if our guys can play as good in the second half as they do in the first half. <_<

It sure would be nice if they could figure this out in year four. The coverage teams suck too. The special teams as a whole have been bad for the last 3 years.

  10. By a show of hands, how many people have NOT got pissed off and slung a few expletives someones direction when that has happened to them?

I know we expect these guys to be super human and above everyone else, but geez, lets be real, most of us would probably do something rather similar.

Every single day some yahoo pisses me off when I drive and I utter a few choice words. The difference is that I have self control and don't throw things at someone. For those of you who are dismissing this, throwing an object at someone can be considered assault.

  11. Bill C has said he doesn't want to play them (Holt, Henry, etc.) because he wants to give them time to really develop. Nunn and Hardy didn't really have that and that's why they've gotten less productive.

That's really interesting. Stoops, Pete Carroll, and Urban Meyer don't have this problem.

  12. 1. I mentioned promised starting spots, not promising to be the only QB in the class. See, there's a difference there.

No you said "This coaching staff has really never promised anything to anyone, be it right or wrong."

    Get it straight.

    2. Well known? By who? The guys who seethe over Callahan and Co.? Nah, there's no bias there at all is there.

An intelligent person doesn't infer things that might or might not be there to fit their agenda.

As usual with these kinds of topics since 2003, point me to something in writing (not from OMG A INSIDERS!!!1) that proves what you are saying and I'll concede. I am not saying you are wrong, but I am not a huge fan of "reading between the lines" when there is nothing substantial there. Especially when it comes from a biased basis.

Just because something isn't published does not mean that it is not true. This AD doesn't let out any information and these guys will give the typical coachspeak/playerspeak. These kids are promised things everyday. I have heard many NU fans say that Stoops promises stuff to recruits and I'm sure like almost every coach, he does. Statements that were made by some players at the time they were signed (Lucky, Hildebrand, Beck) proves that there are certainly promises made to kids.

  13. Also kind of weird having Asante #4 dont know why just seems like a weird # for a safety but I guess Thenarse and Culbert also have low numbers. Just thought I'd share

Somebody on defense for the 95 team wore #4....cant think of who it is though...

    Troy Dumas

Dumas graduated in 94. Octavious McFarlin wore #4 but I'm not sure if he played in 95.

  14. he was promised, make no mistake about that, his dad knows cally well and he is a proven commodity, unlike Beck or Freeman. like i said, done deal unless something really odd happens.
Gimme a break. Promised? This coaching staff has really never promised anything to anyone, be it right or wrong. Why would they start now? Not to mention that Keller himself said he has to earn it. If you aren't going to take people at their word, then you can't believe a word anyone says, ever.

You must have forgot that Callahan promised Beck that he would be the only qb in that recruiting class and that Callahan had to get Beck's permission (so-to-speak) to give Taylor a scholarship.

It is also well known that Lucky and Bowman were promised starting jobs whether you want to believe it or not. Why do you think that both considered leaving this year after very average careers to date?

Any intelligent person can see that promises were made to Keller.

  15. Am I the only one that is tired of this debate?

    No.

Maybe we should run every topic by you to make sure it measures up in your interest meter?

I saw the phrase "offensive genious" thrown around here when referring to Callahan. I hope that that "genious" can some how figure out how to put up more that a couple of touchdowns a game against good teams otherwise he will never beat a ranked team.

I regards to Solich v. Callahan you have to look at what each one was able to do. FS took a team to the championship game in his 4th season as HC, most of the players being his recruits. He took a team that had been to 1 bowl game in it's history and won 6 games combined in the 4 years prior to him at Ohio, and he led them to 9 wins and a bowl in his second season. He has won about 70% of his games. There should be 3 more of his NU recruits from this year's NU team playing in the NFL.

Callahan has won about 50% of his games, led NU to its first losing season in 40 years and has only finished in the top 25 once in 3 years. His offense in his 3rd year finally looked good against bad teams and below-average against decent/good teams. His adjustments are Solich-like. He is supposedly a good recruiter but his 2005 class is falling apart. He seems to be a poor evaluator of talent, as he struck out on the easiest position to evalute in PK Congdon. He still has alot to prove.

If you look at coaching resumes, Solich has by far the better resume. If Callahan were that great of a coach the NFL would have come calling in the past couple of years.

That being said, Frank didn't get the job done and Bill has yet to either. Time will tell.

  16. It kind of amazes me that BC's coaches are being picked up all over the place, and not a one from the previous staff go anywhere but down.

That's funny, Gill is now a D1 ead coach, Sanders was just let go as a D1 Defensive coordinator, Cotton was just let go as an D1 Offensive coordinator, Bohl is an up and coming 1AA head coach, Pelini is certainly doing well for himself, just to name a few, Brown chose ministry over football, Williams has a similiar job.

Please don't make untrue blanket statements like this.
