  1. I actually take back quite a bit of what I said about this kid in the beginning. After watching his highlights a little more it's clear this guy has flat out breakaway speed. I'm pretty excited to see what this kid can do in the coming years.

  2. I think it was a response to so many people feeling like we needed to hire a John Gruden or big name to fill these spots. I suppose we could have gotten one big name for the OC but doing that runs a risk if the coaches don't trust each other and don't gel as a staff. The other positions it really wasn't realistic but to be honest. . .average Husker fan is a moron who doesn't understand football, coaching, recruiting, etc like we think we really do. The average fan is too emotional and not rational. I think if people look around the actual sports world they will see the staffs at even Alabama are made up of solid. . no splash hire coaches. I think there was a story the packers even had a coach this year that was coaching high school before they hired him.

People always want to date the prom queen but the reality is . . .we have a better chance of scoring and being happy with the band nerd.

I don't think anyone was really expecting a Gruden level hire. Scott Frost would only be splashy because of the Nebraska connections, I don't think he's necessarily a big name. Other guys like Warriner and Phillips were reasonable hires for a team competing for a national championship. There's a difference between a big, splashy hire, an expected hire, and what we got. I would be shocked if a single team in the top 15 has hired a coach who has no previous experience (Garrison). Of course most programs aren't filled with splash hires, there aren't that many splash hires to go around, but simply reducing them to "solid coaches." Isn't exactly accurate. The top programs are largely filled with guys with extensive pro and college experience. Guys who've spent the last decade winning BCS bowls and coaching all-americans. Not coaching pop warner.

Compare our situation with Texas and LSU for instance. In order to revamp their offenses LSU and Texas both go out and get guys who've been coaching at top 10 programs and winning BCS bowls. LSU hires a guy like Kragthorpe. Texas gets Harsin from Boise. They get guys who are some of the best in the business, while we settle for unproven gambles because they're Bo's buddies.n

Milt actually recommended Garrison for the job as one of the best young technicians in the game. I'll take that.

We'll just have to disagree. The secondary coach at Bama was a student assistant promoted to video guy to coach as an example where your wrong. You point out those two examples I'll use Bamba , Ohio State U, OU, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Oregon for examples where they built quality staffs from GA's guys at mid majors, high school coaches etc. Its way more common even at top programs to have guys like Bo hired than ones like Florida or Texas hired. Take the time to examine the staffs. Hell just follow football scoop and watch who's getting hired. You'd be very surprised.

Well if Milt actually recommended Garrison for the job and said those things then that's a damn nice compliment to have and actually makes me feel a lot more confident in the hire. With that said, it's just confusing to me that we didn't go after someone that has experience in running zone read concepts, which supposedly we are going to. I'm not sure if Garrison has experience dating back to the crouch years or not but I slighlty remember seeing a little zone read-any knowledge on that skers?

  3. Beck is not the one who I am a little disappointed about. I actually think Beck will be very good for years go come. I have to say that I am pretty disappointed at the Garrison hire. He very well could be a very good coach but like others have said, he came from a power, straight-ahead running offense. I just think that if we were going to get a new o line coach we should have gotten a guy that has at least some experience in the spread. Although we did start to go toward the spread toward the end of Crouch's career so we'll see.

  4. Lee's a 4.6 guy. I think you do recruit guys to fit your system, but QBs are kinda particular. Any offense invariably revolves a bit around a QB's skillset anyway. But I think you will get your wish, doesn't look like we will recruit these kind of QBs in the future. It just doesn't make sense to me to shut the door on them, when there are only a certain number of good HS QBs, period. If we could land a Matt Barkley, would you turn him away for not running fast enough? Moot point possibly though.

I would absolutely turn away matt barkley to run the offense we want to run. I may be in the minority on that one but that's just my opinion. Would Pete Carrol have recruited Tommie Frazier to be his qb? I would be willing to bet not. What about Darron Thomas? There are only a certain number of good high school qbs. However, there are a ton of high schools now running the spread and we are finally getting to a point where we have the luxury to allow our relatively raw dual threat qbs the chance to grow as passers.

  5. I would hope we stopped recruiting this guy anyway.

don't want scrub QBs like Connor ;)

Regardless of offensive style, I think a guy like him can help us, even if he does have promising throwing abilities. Florida had Tebow remember, but it didn't stop them from getting Brantley.

yup. just because we favor a stud runner at QB is no reason to pass on a stud passer, so long as he possesses some mobility (see gans, joseph; reesing, todd; etc.)

some mobility then yes...however if his 4.85 is legit then please no. See I'm just not of the same opinion. I think if we are going toward an oregon type offense you have to recruit true dual threat qb's. I'm not saying that all of them have to be 4.4 guys but I sure as hell don't want someone in the mold of Lee either. Not to say that Lee wasn't a good qb in his own rite, just not for this offense. It's not about recruiting guys that are highly ranked, it's about recruiting guys that fit your system.

  6. From what has been posted on the board it sounds like Burns would be one hell of an addition with some great connections. Not too sure about he other two. Skers can you give some insight on what you've heard about the other two? Garrison, being on staff, there has to be some news on him. What his role has been, how good of a technical teacher, etc.? I've never even heard of the other guy...any info at all?

  7. Seriously what are some peoples problem with Pelini? I've heard some jabs at Pelini on this board especially the last few weeks. Is it the fact that he has turned around our program in 3 years? Is it the fact that he shows emotion on the sideline? Is it the fact that he isn't throwing one of his coaches under the bus by telling the media that they got fired? Is it the fact that supposedly he didn't tell Jackson that Sanders was fired? Even though he and his dad came out and said it was blown way out of proportion so why the hell are we sitting here dwelling on it? If Pelini leads this team to a national title I want to see everyone on this board who has been dogging on him still say we didn't win the nebraska way. I don't wanna hear this bs about Oh you just will never understand...blah blah blah. Accept the fact that this guy is not a TO clone. The sooner we accept that the better off we'll be.

  8. I would actually be pretty disappointed if we hired anyone except Frost for oc/co oc. Not saying that nobody else can get the job done but I think a combination of his recruiting ties, his experience actually playing the game around some of the greatest minds and him actually coming from the offense that we are trying to merge to. Like the Mcweon article said-if you want Oregons offense you go after someone who is on Oregons staff. Warriner definitely wouldn't be a slam dunk or sexy hire in any way.

  9. He has also come out and said that he loves Bo as well. Also I'm sure Bo has informed all of the offensive guys what's going on. I'd be willing to bet that if it is Frost that comes in the recruits would be pumped as hell after hearing where he's at right now. Besides, aside from Starling most offensive guys have a better relationship with Beck who's still a major part of the offense.

  10. yep Gilmore is gone and Sanders too not too sure about Watson and also Raymond is are new DB coach

Well since I believe your brother plays for Gilmore I would strongly believe what you are saying. Hopefully Watson is heading out with the other two. I share in everyone elses sentiment about Sanders though-the guy was a very good coach.

  11. And even with that said if Bo treats his players and staff well and they trust him and play hard for him and they win the Big Ten Championship next year Bo will have all the support in the world. Bo can do whatever the hell he wants as long as he wins. That's the difference between this and 07' is that we won 5 freaking games. Had Cally won the Big 12 that year everyone would have loved him. I agree that Bo could say something like things are still being evaluated i'll inform you at a later date or something but really it's not that big of a deal.

Callahan was already on thin ice in 2006 when he won ten games. He was a poor fit for Nebraska culture, and a horrible fit specifically for the culture of Nebraska Football. If Bo is seen to be lying to the fans, it won't go well.

Well he didn't win 10 he won 9 and he also lost his last two in a pretty bad fashion. Had something like 5 TO's in the big 12 CCG and had a terrible game against Auburn. Not to mention he had already had a 5 win season to go along with the 5 win season in 07'. If Cally had won an average of 10 games a year and showed improvement in every year he would have never been let go. Hell he averaged just over 7 wins a year his first 3 years and if he had won 8 games in his last year he probably still would have been kept.

And the Solich talk had to do with an absolute retarded decision by the AD but even with that he was still losing games in an embarrassing fashion and had a 7 win season to go along with it. That's on top of the rumors about him and his certain ways around town.

OK, call me a liar for one less win. So Cally won nine games (I accidentally counted the Spring Game), but the point still stands. He was on thin ice even after a "successful" season. Sure, he lost his last two badly - kind of like we stumbled at the end of 2010. Combine that bad 2006 finish with Callahan's ill-fitting personality for the culture of this program and you've got a recipe for how a coach gets fired - or at least, how the process can start.

Are we looking at the beginning of Bo's end here? Maybe. Maybe not. I have no idea, and I'm not predicting that he's about to be canned or leave. I'm simply saying that he's not going about keeping himself in the good graces of the fans very well.

You cannot deny that Bo has areas to work on. That's what I'm stressing here. Ignore those areas and he risks consequences. It's not impossible, and it's happened before. Recently. Twice.

I wasn't calling you a liar in the least bit...just pointing it out. I'm not saying for one second that Bo doesn't have things to work on and I do wish he would just come out and say things that are happening. My point is that winning does cure MOST things. A bad relationship with the fans or boosters only gets you canned unless you stop winning. If Cally had won 10 games a year after 06' and every now and then won a big 12 CCG even though he kept the same relationship with fans and alumni he would have never been fired. I'm not even counting Solich bc a) IMO it should have never happened and it was a dumb decision by Pedey and B) Solich inherited a GREAT program and within 5 years had it in the middle of the pack in the North division. Bo inherited a 5 win team and has taken them to an average of 10 wins his first 3 years damn near. If in the future Bo has a couple 6-6 seasons that's when we'll see his actions now cost him big, but if he keeps winning it won't matter.

  12. And even with that said if Bo treats his players and staff well and they trust him and play hard for him and they win the Big Ten Championship next year Bo will have all the support in the world. 13. I don't think the pissed off people on message boards are indicative of the attitude of Husker fans as a whole

2007 disagrees with you. Message boards were a great barometer of the feelings of the fan base as a whole. And if you ask around in bars, cafes, water coolers and street corners across Nebraska, you'll find there are tons of folks right now who support Bo but not the way he's been acting lately. That support can change pretty quickly.

Bo won the fans over with his rugged, hard-working attitude. He can turn them off just as easily by being dishonest - or appearing to be dishonest - with them. Let's not pretend he can't lose the respect of the fans.

And even with that said if Bo treats his players and staff well and they trust him and play hard for him and they win the Big Ten Championship next year Bo will have all the support in the world. 14. Seriously? Afhusker told you what was going to happen! Plus he was nice enough to explain how our assistant coaches contracts work and why we aren't having press conference tomorrow. I would say he told you quite a bit!

I get that he told me what was going to happen-he said two coaches are going to get let go. But as for those two that still remains to be seen and he really didn't drop any hints on to who that would be, which is why I asked. There are 3 coaches that I could see getting let go.

  15. Afhusker told you what what going to happen. Last year all assistant coaches contracts were signed by feb 12. Are you guys expecting a press conference? I'm sure all we will get is a press release.

    Bingo!

And there is not a signing day press conference scheduled for tomorrow, so anything official that comes out tomorrow will be by press release. And there is no guarantee that everything gets announced tomorrow either. They could wait until next Monday to officially announce anything.

Ok so it's been said that two coaches are getting fired and you make it seem obvious. I can think of 3 coaches that IMO should probably be let go in Wats, Gilmore and Cotton. So with that said, are the two below 6'4 or is one of them above 6'4?

  16. I told everyone like I told you yesterday, I plan on going to Nebraska. A lot of people are saying 'Oh he's going to visit Auburn' and 'he's going to Auburn' or 'he's doing that.' Even if I was visiting Auburn, it wouldn't mean much because I've made up my mind."

    I told you...he is :bigredn:

Why would he even want to visit Auburn or even mention the possibility? I'm not calling the kid a liar by any means but it's an interesting comment. I hope like no tomorrow that he will be a Husker but I won't quit worrying until he signs.

  17. I'm going to say 70/30 he's headed to Auburn.

That's because you are a Negative Ned. I have faith in this kid. He seems to have good character. And he said its over, once he makes a decision it is final. The kid is :bigredn:

No it's not that I'm a negative ned it's just that plucking a kid out of the south the caliber of Abdullah when the home state is knocking on your door is extremely difficult. If we keep him I will be incredibly delighted and surprised.
