  1. Refresher from what we've read of the recent past:

Bo has stated that that number is going to be fluid. The actual numbers from year to year. He said he wasn't going to burdon himself by locking anything in to a certain number.

After the firing, Dr. Osborne stated that the optimum Nebraska walk-on ratio had to do with 'critical mass'. Presumably, that 'critical mass' would be whatever quantity(without carrying dead meat)maximized the immersing of the Cornhusker psyche into the adopted sons. Remember, Bo has an elite sports psychologist at his disposal should he inquire.

  2. Thanks for the insight. One thing we need to brace for is that every year has some attrition from the ranks. Most coaching changes create even more attrition. And finally....the abrupt change in culture in the Husker program is possibly going to create a lot of attrition and feed a lot of conversation between now and next August.

Some tough medicine. But necessary and healthy growth.

  3. High Schools in the top 2 classes are allowed to have spring ball, so these kids have 3 years of Spring ball under their belt. They probably figure rather than sitting watching the younger kids go through spring ball, they'll graduate early and go through spring ball at the college of their choise.

    Excellent observation.

  4. Should be someone from Auburn that could chime in on this kid. I live about 35 miles away. Just asked my daughter about him. She says he isn't on the basketball team this winter. She says he isn't a bad kid, discipline wise. But may not be driven or inspired enough. I doubt the family would encourage or finance him as a walk-on. If he has any potential, I'd like to see him have the opportunity.

  5. After reading Stafford's comments about "only thing for me is getting over the distance thing" and "Lincoln is more of a small town and I'm a big city kid" I don't think he will committ to Nebraska. I think he had nothing else better to do this weekend so he decided to take a free, all expenses paid, trip to Lincoln. On a side note. It really baffles me that kids comes out and says "It is really far from home". I guess they don't know what a map of the United States looks like?

  6. As a alum of Cardnial Mooney I saw Tim Marlowe play 9 or 10 games this year. At the begining of the year I was concerned about his size, however, after watching play I was impressed with how he plays the game. While he is probably 5'8" 155 lb. he can fly. His nickname on the team was "Bullet" due to his speed. His best qualities are his instincts and his knowledge of the game. When Mooney lost it's quarterback Dan McCarthy (a Notre Dame recruit) in the playoffs Bullet steped up and opposition fans were shocked to hear he was a back-up. All in all Tim is not only the tyhpe of player Bo Pelini likes he is also the type of player Bo Pelini was. He is hardnosed, smart and talented. I would imagine that Tim will play as a flanker.

Thanks for the personal report, Ytown.

  7. If you want a coach that is going to preferentially play underclassmen in an effort to build for the future. You'll either have to get a different coach or a different team. Ain't gonna happen here. This staff and program isn't going to sacrifice a single win in exchange for the mindset of playing lower skilled underclassmen with the thought of building for the future. That isn't the way it's done. The young guys are brought along and developed over time, not thrown into the fire only to lose. Unity, winning tradition, and confidence (if you wanted any of these) would be thrown out the window. These young people live in the here and now. No college junior or senior wants to be used and discarded in lieu of young players as a business investment for 3 or 4 years into the future.

I've sent this same mindset used and fail at the highschool level. Where the incoming freshman class appears to be untypically loaded with talent. In reality it usually doesn't have as much upside as initially perceived. Then what is an already below average coach uses this mindset of building with his young players the coming dream team for 2 or 3 years later. They flop and flounder for the next couple of years and fail in the senior year also. The cycle goes on. Always in a rebuild mode. Losers in a loser program. It's a defeatist mindset.

  8. I remember Thunder coming in. The thoughts of a option pitch from 'Lord' to 'Thunder' was dancing in our minds. More and more over the years, we the fans (fanatics) embellish the potential great contribution of each new recruit. Because----we're a large and connected audience and we communicate about it 24-7. It's because we want to believe that we are going to be better the next year. That's part of what makes us who we are.

Too often these days, we think the next hot recruit is going to play and contribute immeditely. We talk of them leapfrogging the past year's recruits of which just 12 months earlier we spoke of leapfrogging the previous year's recruits. When Jamal Lord wasn't making us happy, we wanted Joe Dailey to play immediately. Seldom works that way. I don't blame the media. I blame myself and us for this unrealistic appraisal. But, I am maturing and getting a reality check after 50 years.

Remembering TO's O-line makeup. Occassionally a freakly talented redshirt-freshman or sophomore in the starting lineup, but mostly juniors through 5th year seniors being at the top of their game. That's the reality. In recent years we've been overly optimistic that a new prep or juco recruit can come in and contribute immediately. Historically top teams aren't made up like this on an annual basis. Teams with the development pipeline are.

  9. He's been in Auburn enough years, post-Katrina, to get his grades and credits in order if he was capable. Probably an academic project. Definitely above average athletically for small-town Nebraska. D-1 level? I don't know. He will get an honest look from Pelini's staff.

After reading the bio in wikipedia you will see that this was what TO was talking about during the press conference following the firing of BC, when he said (paraphrasing) "Teams used to hate playing us."

I eagerly await the day when the Cornhuskers once again field a team that is 'Bodacious'.

  11. Dirk Koetter was recently hired as offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Coach Helfrich, who recruited and coached Keller at ASU, is in his second year as Colorado's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Helfrich and Keller will be on different sides of the field this year.
