Petito is a jerk from what I have seen not to mention the roids he is requiring kids to take but denies. I had a father in my office who reported his son was asked to take roids. petito was confronted and of course denied kid transferred to a clean program Millard South.

 

Millard North is a one dementional team. Its tough when those uper class West Omaha kids get beat!!!! Go Central Eagles!

 

 

I have played for and started on two Millard North teams headed by Coach Petito, and I must say that this is a load of crap. I am tired of people on this board ragging on Coach Petito. Coach would never ask us to take steroids, or any other supplement for that matter. I have never seen steroids at Millard North, and I played there for 4 years. What people can't seem to understand is that the Millard North program is built upon a tremendous strength and conditioning program unmatched by any high school in the state. To say that he is a "jerk" when you have no personal experience dealing with him is not only unfair, but ridiculous as well. Be a man and judge someone's character from your own personal experience with them

 

Furthermore, Coach Petito is a tremendous mentor and places incredible emphasis on developing high school kids into solid human beings. I agree that the offensive schemes he runs maintain a high focus on option-based run plays, but the level of success he has had is far greater than any other Nebraska high school coach in the last decade. I also seem to remember several Nebraska squads that focused on this style of offense as well, and we all know how the 90s worked out for us using that offense.

 

Grow up, and stop making rash judgments about people.

I personally do not know nor have I met Petito so I don't know how true these claims are. Chances are, he's just like most high school coaches in that he strongly advocates against taking performance enhancing drugs but does little or nothing to activley discourage it. When I was playing, performance enhancing substance use wasn't at all uncommon among high school teams. I played with and against kids from Omaha, Millard and Papillion/LaVista that were either high(crack/cocaine), juiced or amped up. I don't imagine much has changed accept the kinds of drugs used.

My style of coaching has really always been run the offense, hire somebody and let him do the defense. You can't run both sides of the ball. But I'm going to try to take more of an active role in watching defensive practice."

Say what you want about the man, but unlike Callahan at least he admits that:

1) That their D is bad over the past few games.

2) That it's HIS fault for it not working well.

anyone that thinks we are going to a bowl game is a dip....get real. Even if offered, this team should turn it down...they deserve the toilet bowl if any bowl, you are living on fantasy island if you really believe that any bowl is in our future.

 

 

hahah.. i'll take that as a personal shot at me.. since i pointed out its possible.. note i didn't say i think it will happen.. but you cannot rule it out until we are mathematically out of contention.. last time i looked.. 6-6 is bowl eligible..and that IS a possibility.. not that it will happen.. its just possible..

You pretty much can rule it out if we go 6-6 because there is a new rule in the NCAA this year that NO 6-6 teams may be taken over a 7-5. I heard this on 1620 a couple days ago, they said if we finish 6-6 we still won't go to a bowl because of this. They said you'll start seeing less and less 6-6 teams in the bowls.

If true, this is a good thing IMO. If you can't win more games than you lose, you don't deserve to play in the post-season.

I know he finished up as #55, but I always think of him as #95 and Christian as #55. You are correct about Jason wearing #55, but when someone refers to double nickel at NU, I just have flashbacks of Christian tearing some poor QB's head off.

I honestly don't see Schiano, Groebe or Leavitt leaving the programs they built into winners for a program in shambles. The same could be said of Gill, but he has ties to the school, that may sway his decision.

Pelini is an unproven, but I like the fire he brings, maybe it translates to the HC position.

I haven't been able to see Kelly, Patterson or Glenn in action. Johnson, beat ND for the first time in 43 years...they are horrible this year and it took him 3 OTs to do it to the bottom 3 with you. Kevin Steele, I remember his time a NU but his Baylor years are still in my head...ugh. Petrino is too much of a merc for me, the chance of him bolting as soon has he rebuilds the program is probably greater than anyone we could hire.

Muschamp, Edsal, Holtz and Mullen would also be good hires as well.

I don't know what most of you guys's problems is with Rose...yeah, you can analyze and nitpick, but his broadcasts are just EXCITING and great fun to listen to.

 

Oh well. I hope he's back. At least, I hope we don't get Sharpe again. Nice guy, commend him for picking up this broadcast for whatever reasons Rose couldn't make it, but I'd rather have Rose calling the plays than the former Voice of the Wildcats.

I don't want a college football playoff.

 

Every game counts in college football, just ask Michigan! I'm afraid a playoff would make more teams schedule more cupcakes, which would make the regular season less exciting. Plus, one of the great things about college football is the emotion and passion of the fans. Ten years later people can still debate whether Michigan would have beat Nebraska. No one does that with NFL teams. Lose a couple games, get to the Super Bowl, play a boring game, hold up a trophy. The next day no one cares!

Maybe they could do away with D1 scheduling lower tier schools (D1-AA, DII)during the regular season. There would still be the cupcakes, just not as many.

Of any game we have left this year, I would be willing to bet that we pull this one off.

1. We play in Lawrence...so unexpected fan negativity won't be there.

2. It's Kansas homecoming and they are undefeated and might be a little overconfident.

It seems to me that there were definately smoke signals come from the AD's office, but as for coach's security, I dont think there were too many serious concerns. I thought it was sink or swim at the start of the year, so it's possible others did to. Sucks how it's unfolding, b/c I just want us to win and be competitive.

 

The future is in good hands (TO). We all will wait and see.

 

If There was a grassy knoll, I mean Plan B, then Why did PerlMan allow Extensions. That will be the 6 million dollar question if this plays out.

 

Because Steve Pederson misrepresented the facts to Perlman just as he did to all of us. He thinks he is a football genius and Perlman has plenty more to worry about other than football. It really irks me to think about that guy. I couldn't stand the guy when they hired him and had a feeling things were going to go sour on him. Hoped against hope that he was right but it just all seemed too sleazy. The big named coaches were all steering clear and too many good Nebraska guys were shown the door. Bohl, Bo, Gill, and to a lesser extent Frank. It was like if George Stienbrenner showed up on the Yankee front porch in 1927 and told them how screwed up they were and he was there to fix things. And then proceeded to trade Ruth and friends.

 

I can forgive but not until Nebraska is back in the top five where they should be.

Perlmans job was and is to run the university. Pederson recommended the coaching staff extensions how was Harvey supposed to know that it was all BS.

dailey was and is pitiful as a qb. cally just made it worse, as he has all along for all the qbs. Zach Taylor did well in spite of clownahan.

Makes me wonder how well Zac would have done in an Oklahoma style offense.

I think some people want nebraska to lose so that the higher ups will boot callahan sooner. No one here WANTS them to really lose, they just want this Husker team to stop suffering...

I was the same way, how can you ever root for your team to lose...I argued with my bro-in-law for hours before the season ever started on this subject. He's as bigga Husker fan as I've ever met. We both wanted Cally gone that was a given BUT his point was we need to lose a few (unfortunately) to quicken the process and make it inevitable. He didn't want a 8-4 7-5 season and hear again how were still building. This has to be fixed w/o a doubt and it's painful for everyone involved but we'll get there!

I think for some people they need this to happen (Cally fired) literally before they can feel optimistic again---almost a trust thing.

I find these thoughts going through the minds of more people each day. Where I work, I'm able to talk to alot of differnent people from all over Nebraska. They want so badly for Bill to be gone, that they are willing to see the Huskers lose than the chance that a win will help keep him around for one more year. It's sickening to see that is what has been brought about by Pederson and his wonderful "movement from mediocrity"

Well since you get your stats from yahoo and not from the NCAA I'll correct you. The defense was rated 11 in total defense and not 6. See for yourself.

And I'm not saying they sucked, I'm saying they still gave up 30+ points three times that year. Since I believe the NCAA trumps yahoos stats you'll see that they were not 6th. Either way, like I said, the point was they gave up 30 + points three times.

I would typically use points per game, but can understand the arguement for either.

When you have 4 or 5 turnovers, it isn't out of the ordinary to give up 30 points. That is why people have been saying that Pelini was a great coach. With a defense ranked 55th in 2003 we could have had a MUCH worse record than 10 - 3.

Is NU looking at Urban Meyer? I know its a long shot but that'd be awesome if we could get him.

Not only Meyer --- but no way any established coach at any school that has sniffed the top 25 the past few years would even remotely consider NU. NU is, I am afraid to say, not a major program anymore and is a fishbowl that most any coach would avoid. It is not a top 25 coaching job. So, do not expect a major coach to come here. the only hope to attract anyone that is proven is to have a disproportionate amount of $ thrown their way. Sort of like Alabama did.

 

Yeah, Nebraska isn't a top 25 school anymore...kinda like Miami, Notre Dame and Florida State aren't top 25 programs anymore....Or back in the 90's when USC and Oklahoma (before Carroll and Stoops) weren't top 25 programs. Please, Nebraska is clearly a top 25 program and will be again assuming that TO brings in the right HC (and definitely not be Turner Gill).

 

Why not Turner Gill? What has he done to be automatically disqualified by so many on these boards? The man should definitely be interviewed. Not because he happened to play here but for the reasons below.

 

First, look at what he has done at Buffalo. He inherited facilities and talent on what has been argued by ,many to be the worst program in D1 and immediately had those guys overachieving. He has those guys believing in themselves, the program and definitely in the coaching staff. Compare that to Callahan who takes five star recruits and gets them to underachieve. So on this first test, Turner is much more like Osborne and Devaney than Callahan and I suspect better than what a lot of other coaches could do at Buffalo.

 

As such he has more head coaching experience than Bo. And yes, I think Bo should be interviewed too. My point is that saying Gill doesn't have enough experience is not valid. If it is, then Bo should not be interviewed either.

 

Next Gill does have a lot of years in coaching. The man is 45 years old. Some have said maybe in a few years after he has more years of experience. Well how much more does he need and if you wait too long he'll only have a few years before retirement to give. He was a good position coach while he was here and coaching Crouch, Frost, and Tommie too (I think) certainly can't damage his credibility can it?

 

He has Texas connections for recruiting. That must count for something.

 

He was given administrative duties while here as well I believe as assistant head coach with Frank. Or some title like that anyway.

 

Finally, if he does pass the muster in all the other areas that Tom Osborne would require, then his experience as a former coach and player at one of college footballs most prestigious instituations SHOULD be considered. He is charismatic to his players and given his Nebraska player bloodlines, the state could rally around him like few others if he passes the interview requirements.

 

It would be foolish to write this talent off just because he played at NU. Yes we don't want to pull another John Blake like Oklahoma did. But Turner Gill is 45 with a lot more experience and more of a track record than Blake had at age 34 when he was hired.

 

All I am saying is give Gill a chance too. I have followed him closely since he started at Buffalo. Given what he has had to work with there, he has been very impressive in every aspect of the Head Coaching job. He has inspired the players, his coaching staff and the Buffalo community by demonstrating charisma and also character that reminds me of the man I bet he learned some of it from: Tom Osborne.

 

Some of you are very adamant about not wanting Gill. If it is fear of commiting another Blake. That is valid but it doesn't automatically disqualify Gill from consideration. Further, just because Blake didn't work out at Oklahoma doesn't mean that a former coach/player here will never work. If that is the case Bob Devaney should have never hired Tom Osborne. And Tom should have been a complete failure as Blake was at Oklahoma.

 

If Gill wants an interview, he definitely deserve a real and serious interview. And I would not be surprised that under a full and comprehensive review, Gill may be the best man for the job. In my opinion it is between Gill and Pelini. If it is a tie, Gill gets my tiebreaker vote (if I had one) due to character, experience and yes, a history and understanding of Nebraska football tradition.

It shouldn't matter who the person is as long as they are the BEST person for the position.

How about a different BP... Bobby Patrino. If I was him I'd be looking for my first chance out of Atlanta.

I have heard Petrino would leave also if given a great college team.....Like Michigan, or LSU if Miles leaves. he will demand $4MIL/year. Out of our league.

 

If the boosters come up with $40 mil to run Pederson and Callahan out of town then they won't have any trouble coming up with 3.5-4 million to get the right guy.

 

Personally, I'm on the Pellini bandwagon. Should have been the coach in the first place!

I'm not sure about Petrino as HC. His loyalties seem to be along the same vein as Saban lately.

Brohm comes back for his senior season and he leaves him hanging. Nice job coach.

I can understand some unrest because of the coaching situation, but the thing I will never understand for the life of me is how these players act like the coaches are the only reason they come to a school.

 

Tomorrow, their HS coach could decide it is time to quit or retire. Are they going to stop playing at their HS because of it? If they go to the NFL, their coach(es) could be fired at a moments notice, are they going to hold out until they find out about their situation then? Or if they go into the job world and their boss resigns or takes another job, will they quit and look elsewhere just based on that alone?

 

Familiarity is fine, but remember, you chose Nebraska because ONE of its qualities were the coaches.

 

When Gabbert, Compton and Givens were recruiting so hard for Nebraska, were they recruiting hard for the school they were about to play for, or were they doing it for the coaches?

 

They have to remember, they are signing to play for Nebraska and putting on a helmet with that glorious red 'N' on the side, not a picture of Callahan's face.

 

If the main reasons they were coming to Nebraska were for the coaches, then they were coming for the wrong reasons to begin with.

Speculation, but I think the reason they wanted to come here is because Callahan was selling them a program that would get them a "better shot at the NFL"

Stating the obvious, but a few more blowouts like the last two week may force his hand. IMO

I dunno... with the turning in of black shirts, there may a heightened focus on defense this week. aTm lost to a troubled Tech team.

Or maybe it's their way of throwing in the towel.

I honestly don't think that BC will be able to suck up his pride and ask help from a man whom he can't even name during a PC.
