  1. Steele has some balls picking Nebraska to win the north with only 13 starters back. I can't wait to get this season started and prove this dipsh*t wrong. I'm not a steele fan. I doubt he thinks much of KU either. That's alright though. We'll let Nebraska get all the preseason hype, then take it from you in Lawrence! LOL

Careful JGS30.... Don't go running your mouth again and giving me more signature material! :box

Steele is normally the most accurate from what I've seen.

We should have the best lines in the North by far, and I think that will be the difference. But you never know...

  2. I got my copy of the Big 12 Athlon Preview yesterday. Here's a quick breakdown.

Unit Rankings (Nebraska) (All Rankings are conference, except where noted)

    QB (11th), RB (4th), WR/TE (10th), OL (3rd), DL (2nd)(10th Nationally), LB (8th), DB (3rd)

    Division Finish

    North

    Nebraska

    Kansas

    Missouri

    Colorado

    Kansas State

    South

    Baylor

    Texas A&M

    More to come...

  3.

    Dont get too excited Saunders.

Athlon sucks man. Last year, the had NU finishing in 4th place. Plus, they have Notre Dame ranked. That pretty much invalidates their entire rankings.

I have heard some people dont think they are very credible.;)

Ha. I wasn't getting excited, just very surprised. Preseason rankings mean jack squat. The only benefit, is that you have a better chance of staying ranked throughout the season, as long as you don't lose a bunch of games in a row. Plus, a ranked VT and NU squad will probably garner a national TV game, and maybe even gameday.

  4. For starters Saunders, your study doesn't hold as much weight as you want it to. If it did, KSU and ISU would be running things in the North, which isn't happening. Heck, I don't care how much experience a BAD O-line has (see KSU) they'll still get worked every Saturday.

I know my team better than you Saunders, and though we lost both guards and our center, the talent we have replacing them is better, and they saw some time last year. Our O-line will be better than you think....especially better than last years bunch.

For the record, I never said KU's d-line was better than NU's. That's crazy talk. I just mentioned how Greene and Parish had been coming along and how I expect big things from them. I feel good about the nd-line. I never once put down Suh, and have mentioned several times how I feel he is the best DT in the nation and will likely be a top 5 draft pick as long as he stays healthy. Players like him just don't grow on trees. He is a difference maker, and won't be the reason you lose to KU. Your offense will.

Oh-enjoy the qoutes "classy fans" :)

It's not the only factor, on that I completely agree. However, it is an important factor. I'm not meaning to single you out. If you say the replacements for your starters are better, so be it. That said, others have said that NU's line will be worse due to replacing the right side, and that the replacements can't be as good. It doesn't work both ways.

P.S. nice to see you man up. Only took you half a year! ;)

  5. I was cruising around some other CFB sites and noticed that Athlon is doing their Top 25 countdown over 25 business days. And so far no Nebraska or Kansas. In fact, they're down to #17 and it doesn't look like anyone from the North will be ranked. It's kind of sad really.

I mean, I know we think highly of our teams, and I bet if you asked anyone of us we would rank KU and NU somewhere between18-25. But you have to wonder how the CFB world views the North outside our glass house. I think their view is pretty clear-they don't think much of us.

Athlon sucks man. Last year, the had NU finishing in 4th place. Plus, they have Notre Dame ranked. That pretty much invalidates their entire rankings.

  6. Offensive line is in NU's favor, and it isn't even close. Here's why:

And you just thought that The Wall Street Journal was good for the stock tables and stories about fiduciary accounts.

The Journal has a very underrated sports section and an emerging blog. Staff writer Darren Evenson had an intriguing post a few days back that detailed how experience in the offensive line usually is a pretty good indicator of a college football team's eventual success.

The study indicates that eight of the teams that finished last season in The Associated Press' final 2008 top 10 poll had at least 65 combined offensive line starts at the beginning of the season.

And three of the more notable disappointments last season -- Missouri, Clemson and Georgia -- all had fewer than 40 starts.

The study also broke down the offensive line starts for nearly every FBS team in the nation, including all of the Big 12 teams. Here's how teams in the conference rank heading into the 2009 season, courtesy of the The Wall Street Journal:

    Texas: 91

    Oklahoma State: 86

    Baylor: 66

    Iowa State: 61

    Nebraska: 61

    Kansas State: 57

    Missouri: 56

    Texas A&M: 56

    Texas Tech: 52

    Colorado: 48

    Oklahoma: 29

    Kansas: 26

The statistics are intriguing for several reasons. Maybe Texas and Oklahoma State can fulfill their lofty preseason expectations because of veteran offensive lines. And Baylor's experience -- even after losing starting tackles Jason Smith and Dan Gay from last season -- could be a huge factor in the Bears making their first bowl appearance since 1994.

The other item that strikes me is the lack of experience from Oklahoma and Kansas. The Sooners will have the least returning experience in the trenches of any team Bob Stoops has ever coached there. It will be interesting to see how that factors into their hopes of being able to claim an unprecedented four-peat of Big 12 titles.

And early North contender Kansas will have the least offensive line experience among any Big 12 teams. How will that play a part in the Jayhawks' hopes of claiming their first undisputed North title?

The national average is 61 games of experience, meaning only Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas are above the national benchmark.

KU will not win the division, and will finish with a similar record to last year.

  7. Just another reason I can't wait to get Nebraska in Lawrence. It's KU's year kids. I don't think you have the horses to beat us in Lawrence this year. We have too much firepower on offense, and with the game being at home, our defense will force your inexperienced offense into a lot of mistakes. I think that's the difference. KU wins by double digits infront of the largest crowd in Jayhawk history.

Here's to a great 2009 season. Go Jayhawks!

Gee.... where have I heard this before...

  8. imo what it is going to come down to is if we can harass Reesing as much as we did last year. I have a ton of respect for Reesing, but Kansas pass pro, especially against us, was nothing special last year.

Yeah, that is true. We had 2 rookie tackles last year though.... They are good athletes, just were not very game tested. I am hoping that will improve for us this year. If it does not, we ain't gonna win the title.

And this year you have 2 rookie guards.... and Suh is smiling.

  9. Last week, Tom Osborne left his third-floor office and took one flight of stairs down to the football floor. Nebraska’s athletic director had asked Bo Pelini, the Huskers’ head coach, for some time to address his staff.

Osborne went into the room carrying the look of a man with a serious message, and he delivered it in his usual calm, measured manner.

He said that another Big 12 school had written the NCAA about Nebraska’s apparent violation of a rather obscure rule involving extra recruiting enticements.

“The allegation involves Mike Ekeler wearing a tattoo to entice Will Compton to come to Nebraska,” Osborne said, “and, unfortunately, because of that tattoo on his arm, it looks like we will have NCAA sanctions against us when the investigation is complete. The way I understand it, it looks like Mike will be off the road for a year recruiting, and it looks like Will is going to be ineligible to play this year.”

Osborne took no pleasure in making that announcement. There was concern in his face and compassion in his voice. The room went quiet enough to hear a pin drop.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ekeler finally said, breaking the ice.

The room went even more silent. Then, Ron Brown, Nebraska’s veteran receivers coach, went over to Ekeler, the Huskers’ rookie linebackers coach, and put his arm around him.

“I’ve been through this before,” Brown told Ekeler, patting his back. “I think you’re going to be okay.”

Then Brown smiled. Then Osborne smiled. Then together, they released the healthy chuckles that had been hiding behind their grim faces. When the chuckles turned to laughter, the whole room full of coaches knew they’d been had.

  10. Some of you jumped the gun. Might want to rethink how quickly you judge others before crucifying our own guys without the facts...

    From the Lincoln Journal-Star:

LINCOLN — The weekend party plans that were posted on a popular social networking site and linked to several Nebraska football players are completely erroneous, coach Bo Pelini said Wednesday.

Speaking after his signing day press conference, Pelini took steps to quash potential rumors that may have developed from profanity-laced Facebook party invitations that mentioned and included a photo of Husker lineman Andy Christensen.

No football players were responsible for the Web site's material, Pelini said.

"I know for a fact that Andy Christensen was not involved, was not having a party, was not going to a party this weekend," Pelini said, "because whatever was posted on his Facebook page . . . was inappropriate. Our football team will not be going to such a party, and Andy Christensen had nothing to do with what was posted on that Facebook page."

Pelini said a friend of a former Husker player created the content, though he doubts that the university will take any disciplinary action.

The Facebook postings were referenced nationally on CBSSports.com, which reported that several Husker football players had accepted invitations to attend the planned party.

Christensen, concerned with the possible ramifications, approached Pelini about the situation Wednesday afternoon. But by then, Pelini said, he knew that Christensen had no part in the incident.

"It's a shame because Andy with everything that he's gone through, his name kind of got brought into this thing," Pelini said.

Last fall, Christensen was found not guilty of a sexual assault charge, but did plead guilty to resisting arrest and criminal mischief. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility, is going through winter conditioning with the Huskers and will play next season, Pelini said.

  11. You have to assume that he will atleast be in the mix. I have heard really good things about DE Josh Williams, and they were planning on playing Merideth last year, had he not gotten hurt. I would expect Yancy to definitely see the field some next year, atleast.

I thought Merideth did play last year.

He did, very little, and got injured. I believe he's getting a medical RS for '08.
