College Football Top 25 Rankings for 2022

An important note on Athlon's top 25 for 2022: This is not a preseason ranking of teams going into the season. Instead, this ranking takes into account where we project teams to finish after the national championship in January. Here are Athlon's projected top 25 teams in college football for 2022.

The Next Tier (Only including our opponents)

    Iowa
The Hawkeyes should be strong on defense once again. However, crossover matchups versus Michigan and Ohio State dot the schedule, and major concerns remain on offense.

    Minnesota
Running back Mohamed Ibrahim is back after suffering a torn Achilles in last year's season opener. But for Minnesota to win the Big Ten's West Division, quarterback Tanner Morgan has to rebound, and the line has to replace four starters.

    Purdue
Quarterback Aidan O'Connell headlines a team with 14 returning starters and a favorable schedule that sees the Boilermakers miss Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State in crossover play.

    * Nebraska is a prime candidate to improve in 2022. The Cornhuskers lost eight of their nine games by one score and had a minus-five turnover margin. Neither of those numbers is likely to repeat this fall.

    * Illinois played in seven games decided by one score in coach Bret Bielema's debut last fall. The three victories by one score all came in Big Ten play - Penn State, Nebraska and Minnesota.

    * Iowa led the Big Ten with 31 forced turnovers and also tied for the conference lead with four wins by one score. Repeating 31 takeaways is not going to be easy in '22.

    * Minnesota won nine games last year, but coach P.J. Fleck's team wasn't far from something better. The Golden Gophers lost four games but three were by one score. Included in those three were head-scratching defeats to Bowling Green and Illinois.

    * Northwestern's only Big Ten game decided by one score came against Iowa (17-12).

    * Wisconsin's only loss decided by one score came in the first matchup of the year versus Penn State. The Badgers also lost the most turnovers (23) in the Big Ten, yet finished plus-one in overall margin.

    * Purdue's one-score wins came against Illinois, Tennessee and Nebraska. The only defeat was against Minnesota.

That last one is almost infuriating in how implausible it is.

The difference between the east/west crossover W/L is only a handful of games. Outside of OSU dunking on everyone, it's pretty even, so whatever "division" they are in is going to be seen as the better no matter what.

College football updated SP+ preseason projections for 2022
The biggest names in the transfer portal have mostly made their decisions, and my weekly power conference previews begin this week. It sounds like a pretty good time to post some updated SP+ projections!

Thus far, my preview series has leaned on numbers posted in February after the second national signing day had come and gone. But enough has changed at this point -- I was getting ready to write a Pac-12 South preview using numbers that thought quarterback Jayden Daniels was still at Arizona State, for instance -- that it felt like a good time for an update. These aren't the final projections of the offseason; those will still come in mid-to-late August. But let's see what havoc the transfer portal hath wrought in the past three months.

A quick reminder: Preseason projections are based on three factors.

"Worst case, 7-5. Best case, 9-3, with a chance to finish as high as second (in the West). I'm not sure they're going to win that division, but I think they have as good of a chance as anybody.

"But without a doubt, a bowl game is the expectation. The question is, how good of a bowl game can it be, and can this team really make a push to win the division?

"This is probably the most-anticipated season in Jeff Brohm's six years in West Lafayette. It starts with Penn State on Sept. 1 on a Thursday night on national television. If they win that game, look at their schedule after that.

"If they beat Penn State - and I'm not saying this is 1986 Penn State - but there's a chance they could start off 6-0 or 7-0. It's not crazy, and it certainly could set up for them to get off to a heckuva hot start and have a lot of momentum as we get close to Halloween."

CollegeFootballNews: Purdue 2022 Preview & Prediction

Purdue football has always been a little bit of a Little Engine That Could sort of program without the next-level star power of the biggest of Big Ten teams, but when it was rolling back in the day under the late, great Joe Tiller it had a scheme and style that made everyone worry. It’s been a while, but last year’s team brought a bit of that Basketball On Grass swagger. There were times when the offense sputtered – like against the elite Wisconsin D – and the defense couldn’t keep up with Ohio State’s O, but it wanted to make a statement against a rolling Iowa team, and did. It wanted to make a statement against a hot Michigan State team, and did. And then it was Game On against a high-powered Tennessee team that was trending up. It hung on in a thrilling – and somewhat controversial – shootout victory. Now Purdue has to keep that same attitude to go along with a ton of returning experience. It would take something amazing to break through to an even higher level and be deep in the hunt for a Big Ten Championship appearance – in other words, the rest of the Big Ten West has to be down – but after what the team did last year, it’s not crazy. Head coach Jeff Brohm has done a really good job of recruiting to a type to put this all together after a few tough seasons, and now the team has to do it all again. The special teams have to be better, more takeaways would be good, a better running game would be great, and  … Forget about what Purdue won’t be and probably can’t do. It’s going to give everyone a fight again.

The Athletic: Aidan O’Connell and Purdue aim to build on bounce-back 2021 season

Not since Drew Brees donned the Old Gold and Black in 2000 has Purdue produced a more exciting season than its 2021 campaign. The Boilermakers finished 9-4, their most wins in 18 seasons. They upset No. 2 Iowa on the road and No. 3 Michigan State at home. They won five road games for the first time since their unbeaten 1943 squad. Purdue finished 5-1 over its final six games, including a 48-45 overtime win against Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. Following a disjointed 2-4 2020 season because of the pandemic and a 4-8 finish in 2019, it was important for the Boilermakers to take a step forward under coach Jeff Brohm. They did that and more.

    HuskerOnline: Rutgers 2022 Spring Preview

"Their out-of-conference schedule is a little interesting this year because Boston College has a pretty good team under Jeff Hafley. Temples up and down but again, new coaching staff so it should have at least two if not three out-of-conference wins.

"And then it gets that Big Ten slate where it gets really troublesome. They're playing against Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State back to back to back to back then Iowa and Ohio State back to back.

"I want to say anywhere between three to four wins right now. It's going to be tough. I do think they could snag a Big Ten win or two depending on how Nebraska does, how Indiana does (and) Maryland, I think those are the three winnable ones.

"I probably say around three wins right now. But it's definitely a rebuilding year. This is a long-haul rebuild for Rutgers. When (Greg) Schiano came in, he kind of knew that was happening. But who knows, maybe they can pull some magic out of that."

CollegeFootballNews: Rutgers 2022 Season Preview & Prediction

Bowl don’t lie Rutgers isn’t going to win the national championship, and it’s not going to play for the Big Ten title anytime soon unless Ohio State leaves for the SEC and everyone else in the division quits playing college football. So the goal right now is to get to a bowl game no matter what. If that means the program has to rely on past teams to have gone to class, so be it. Rutgers caught a break last year by having the best Academic Progress Rate among teams with five wins, and that meant it got to go have the fun of the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. It was an ugly 38-10 loss to Wake Forest, but so what? Rutgers went to a bowl game, and that’s good enough. The five wins last year were massive considering the program won a total of 13 games since the 8-5 run in 2014. Best of all, it was the best season in seven years even though the team couldn’t score and the defense couldn’t stop anyone from scoring. Head coach Greg Schiano needed four seasons in his first run at Rutgers to get everything place to have a winning season. It’s still going to take work, but he made some changes in the coaching staff, went heavy in the transfer portal, and … He got the team to a bowl game. It can be done at Rutgers.

The Athletic: Greg Schiano is improving Rutgers’ foundation again. Will 2022 show flashes of the future?

After Rutgers finished last season with a 5-8 record, capped by a loss to Wake Forest in the Gator Bowl, coach Greg Schiano was open to doing some thinking and tinkering with his coaching staff. “After two years, I used it as an opportunity,” Schiano said. “You know the old saying, you not only have to get the right people on the bus, but you gotta get them in the right seats. As a head coach, I continually try and tweak and adjust the staff to maximize the effect they can have on our players.” The Scarlet Knights are 8-14 since Schiano’s return for a second run in Piscataway. They enter this season with an almost entirely new defensive staff. Schiano said he has long viewed new defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak as a bright up-and-comer in the profession. Truth be told, Schiano wanted to hire Harasymiak away from Minnesota when the head coach returned to Rutgers. This winter, Schiano was able to make it happen.

  6. Whatever they do, they need to emphasize schedule balancing. Yes, we suck, I get it. But at the same time, since 2011 (excluding 2020) Nebraska has played the "Big 4" east programs (OSU, PSU, UM, MSU) a bunch more than our divisional counterparts. For example, over that time, Nebraska has played those teams 27 times, while Iowa has only played them 20 times. That adds up over time.

HuskerOnline: Georgia Southern 2022 Spring Preview

“There’s a lot of stuff for them to adjust to over the course of the season. There’s also the fact that the Sun Belt Conference got an influx of football schools a year ahead of originally expected.

"Marshall, James Madison, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion have been added to the schedule. So of the four new teams (in the Sun Belt), three are on the schedule. The East Division is really strong for the Sun Belt Conference, and that’s where Georgia Southern is.

"For them to win six or seven games might be overly optimistic, but it also might be reachable. I think if they have a winning record, or close to it, that would be considered progress based on their schedule and where they are as a new program.”

    CollegeFootballNews: Georgia Southern 2022 Preview

No, really. Just how much was 2021 an aberration?

Georgia Southern was a regular from the Sun Belt on the bowl circuit and winning seasons were the norm after a 2-10 2018 season. The Eagles won 25 games in three seasons with its dangerous ground attack, but last season never got going offensively and everything crashed.

There’s experience returning, but do the parts fit, and just how much will all the transfers and problems of last year matter for Clay Helton and the new coaching staff?

SET THE GEORGIA SOUTHERN EAGLES REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL AT … 5.5

There’s a good chance that win total is laughable low if everything pivots back under Helton.

It starts with finding an offensive groove again and getting the right starting 11 on defense. The Morgan State game will help figure that out, but there’s a brutal run of four road games in the next five including dates at Nebraska and Coastal Carolina.

The midsection of James Madison, at Old Dominion, and South Alabama has to be a 3-0 run, or there’s a problem with at Louisiana, Marshall, and Appalachian State to close.

    HuskerOnline:  Indiana 2022 Spring Preview

“It is kind of hard to see this team back in a bowl game. If you want to do the math, they do get both Illinois and Maryland at home - I don’t know if they could count those as wins, but I think you’d rather be playing those games at home.

"If you can win those two plus Idaho and Western Kentucky, then that’s a baseline of four wins, and you’ve already doubled your win total from the previous season. If you can find a way to steal one more, like at Nebraska or at Rutgers, then you’ve got a chance to at least be 5-6 going into the final game against Purdue…

"Saying that Indiana is a more competent team than what we saw last year is not a fluke. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some rebound for this team. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a team that could at least get to four or five wins and maybe enough respectable losses in there to say, OK, 2021 was rough, but there were enough signs things are improving.

"Having said that, the path to a bowl game, to me, we’re kind of back to a place where that path looks awfully narrow for Indiana.”

    CollegeFootballNews: Indiana 2022 Preview

Indiana will be better. It’s not going to win the Big Ten East, and it’s going to take a whole lot of big breaks to get bowling, but it’s going to be stronger, sharper, and it’s actually going to start scoring again.

But with this program, the wins come when the schedule is light. Out of the 42 wins over the last eight seasons, 36 of them came against FCS teams or reams that finished with losing records – and two of the wins came against WKU, who’s on the slate this year. In other words, it’s more than likely that Indiana will have issues if the slate is full of a lot of good teams.

SET THE INDIANA HOOSIERS REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL AT … 5

Idaho should be a win, and the home game against WKU is a must. The Rutgers game is on the road, and so are the dates with Nebraska and Cincinnati. Can the Hoosiers beat a Penn State or Michigan in Memorial Stadium? How about Purdue, Maryland, and Illinois? There will be at least four wins, and if there’s even a little more offensive production, there should be five with a right-performance-right-day performance in the mix somewhere. Getting that sixth will likely come down to the season finale against Purdue.

The Athletic: Tom Allen, Indiana football lean on culture to rebound from difficult 2021 season

In Tom Allen’s first four seasons as head coach, Indiana developed a reputation as a team that punched above its weight.Even when they weren’t winning many games, the Hoosiers hung tough against teams with more talent and earned the respect of the Big Ten’s traditional powers. They raised the bar for themselves every year, right up to the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season that included a 6-1 record in the Big Ten and a second-place finish in the Big Ten East. The 2021 season put the Hoosiers in unfamiliar territory. Suddenly, they had buzz, expectations and the attention of the college football cognoscenti. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was viewed as a contender for Big Ten Player of the Year, and Indiana was a trendy pick to contend for a New Year’s Six bowl game. Though the Hoosiers were learning to embrace Allen’s “love each other” mantra, everybody else was loving Indiana. The result? Decimated by injuries, Indiana went 2-10, lost all nine of its Big Ten games and finished No. 127 out of 130 FBS teams in offensive yards per play. Losing 20 players to season-ending injuries and 10 others for at least five games would be devastating for any program but especially one with Indiana’s depth. Even though it would be easy to blame everything on the injuries, Allen needed to dig deeper.

Nebraska Football: Will the Cornhuskers Make a Bowl in 2022?

The 2022 college football season is an important one for coach Scott Frost at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are just 15-29 overall and 10-25 in Big Ten play since Frost took over in '18. Although last year's 3-9 record was unlucky, the disappointing mark prompted a major staff overhaul. Frost may not get another season at his alma mater with another losing mark, so the combination of a staff overhaul and a couple of key additions through the transfer portal has to be enough to get to six wins. Nebraska hasn't played in a bowl in five years, which is the program's longest drought since it missed seven in a row from 1955-61. Can the Cornhuskers finally break through under Frost and get to the postseason? Athlon's editors debate whether or not Nebraska will reach a bowl or fall short in '22:

HuskerOnline: North Dakota 2022 Spring Preview

"I think they go 7-4 as I add all this up on their 11 game schedule. I think they'll have a winning record this year. They have a quarterback coming back who's got two-plus years of starting experience, a lot of leaders back in skilled positions on offense that they'll look to.

"They have a really solid coaching staff that has now been there for a long time, almost roughly a decade. I think this is Bubba Schweigert's ninth year as the head coach. And most of his assistants have been there for most of that time. So they've got a good solid culture. And this is a winning football team.

"They were 5-6 last year, but every one of their losses in the conference was by a touchdown or less and they were all one-score games that came right down to the wire. They just had a tough time finishing.

"Their schedule is difficult but they play in the best FCS conference in the country, the Missouri Valley Football Conference. But they get a lot of their toughest teams at home, which helps in some of their road teams aren't quite as strong. So I think realistically, they should be in that 8-3, 7-4 range and competing again, for an FCS playoff spot come the season's end."

  11. I think the key is, that they have to figure out some sort of passing game. It was bad, like real bad the last two seasons. And if they don't figure it out to at least have some semblance of a downfield, threat, the better teams can load up on them.

    Quote

Key stat to know: Wisconsin struggled to effectively stretch the field last season, although it wasn’t for a lack of trying. In all, 25.8 percent of Wisconsin’s pass attempts were thrown to targets at least 15 yards downfield, which ranked 39th in the FBS, per Pro Football Focus. However, the Badgers ranked 114th nationally in pass efficiency on such throws (131.5).

Why does that matter? Of the 16 FBS teams that were worse in pass efficiency, only one of them finished with a winning record.

"It's tough because Michigan's schedule is extremely favorable this year. You've got the Michigan States and the Penn State's on the record, and obviously, you gotta go to Penn State this year. But the nonconference is easy.

"You could realistically see a situation where Michigan could have 10 or 11 wins, heading into Ohio State where they go to Columbus. Not even to mention what they did last year, I think anything short of 10 wins this year is really a failure, in my opinion, just considering they return a good majority of what they had last year. It would be, to me, a failure if they get anything less than 10 wins.

"I'm always hesitant to say that Michigan is gonna beat Ohio State because you just never know. But I would not be shocked if they were 11-0 going into Ohio State to play for all the marbles this year. No, there might not be the pressure of the past few years when Jim Harbaugh needed several votes of confidence and the world didn’t believe he could ever beat Ohio State, but there’s more than enough talent returning, and the schedule is more than manageable enough, to have another massive season. It might take a wee bit to get the star power on the defensive line back and rolling, and depth is a slight issue in some spots, but the quarterback situation is great, the skill parts are fine, and the offensive line should set a tone right away with another good starting five. Throw in a good kicking game, and as long as there’s still the same fight and – to get schmaltzy – hunger there overall, this should be a double-digit win season with the wins piling up early.

Start with an assumed loss at Ohio State, and assume there’s another loss in there somewhere either at Iowa, at home against Penn State, or – shudder – against Michigan State. Can Michigan win all the games it’ll be favored in? There’s no Wisconsin to deal with, missing Minnesota and Purdue matters, and the non-conference slate – Colorado State, Hawaii, UConn – is squishy soft. However, Maryland will be dangerous, Nebraska will be better, and … There’s no excuse to not get to ten wins with this slate considering all the big home games and just four away dates. It’s asking for too much for a repeat of 2021, but yeah, Michigan should be going into the Ohio State game at 10-1 with at least a shot to get back to the Big Ten Championship.

“I think the offensive line will be improved; they should be able to run the football, and they have a better set of receivers than they did a year ago. The defense lost some guys, but they reloaded, and I think they should be good, too.

“That’s why a lot of that will ride on what Graham Mertz is able to do. I’m looking at this as maybe a two or three-loss team, and maybe when all is said and done, they finish 9-3. That’s what I’ll say right now.”

Athlon: #19 Wisconsin Preview & Prediction

This is a make-or-break season for Mertz, and it marks a turning point for the program as well. A strong season in the new offense could mean one more year of an improved Mertz, while another year of struggles would likely mean finding a new signal-caller.

The defense might not be as good from the first snap as it was last year, but it should get up to speed quickly and be able to keep UW in every game.

UW hasn't won a Big Ten title since 2012, but this year's team has the talent to find itself competing for one if the QB plays to his potential.

    CollegeFootballNews: Wisconsin Preview & Prediction

It’s sort of hard to get too down on a program for being disappointing after a 9-4 season with a bowl victory, but it’s time to get back to owning the Big Ten West again before 1) the divisions go away, or 2) change, and 3) USC and UCLA join the party. There will be a great ground game, the defense will be a rock, and the passing attack will be just fine for what the offense needs it to do. The team has to win the home games and it’s got be rolling in November. The Badgers get three nice tune-up games in Illinois State, Washington State, and New Mexico State before the Big Ten opener at Ohio State. Win that, and it’s Game On, but that’s obviously a tough way to start. It also kicks off a run of three road games in the first four conference weeks. Throw into the mix a road date at Michigan State followed up by a home game against a dangerous Purdue squad, and there are landmines to sidestep. Getting an extra week off before the Maryland game is big, especially with at Iowa, at Nebraska, and Minnesota to close.Budget in a loss to the Buckeyes, and at least one loss among the road games at Michigan State, Iowa, and Nebraska. There’s a shot at ten wins, and nothing less than a spot in the Big Ten Championship is okay. It’ll all come down to those final three games.

SET THE WISCONSIN BADGERS REGULAR SEASON WIN TOTAL AT … 8.5
