I think it's pretty obvious that he just doesn't flow in this offense very well.  He had one long run against Northern Illinois.  Other than that, he's averaging under 3.8 ypc.  And a lot of that was out of the I against Ohio State.

I agree with this. However, he was good in the I-formation and Flexbone. You could tell he was much more comfortable, and he looked good running. We haven't seen either formation since Ohio St. Will we see it Saturday?

I just don't think we've given game weeks enough time yet. They are still developing and Rome wasn't built in a day. Riley really destroyed game weeks and Frost needs more time to fix them. /s

Yeah, but I don't know why we ever got rid of Pelini. At least there were nine great game weeks every season under him.

Bye weeks are terrible.  Several threads are just 2 or 3 people arguing back and forth.  Good times.

Game weeks (days) haven't been much better. We can argue about it if you want.

Sure, I get that, and that is great, but that shouldn't be the only rationale to be a Blackshirt, IMO. And that play in question: he might have had a successful bull rush on a RT, but he was nowhere near making a play. He has also, on more than one occasion, ran himself out of a play and given up rush lanes/cutback lanes.

Can he grow into a good/great player? Sure. His playing time this year is more of an indication of the lack of depth we have more than his actual ability at this point in time, IMHO.

You pretty much just described our linebacker play all year long...

In the meantime, Bammer fans are losing their collective stuff after last weekend:

OH NO, they lost a game to a really good team. Are they going to be okay?

Yes, fire one of the best coaches in college football. Brilliant. That's taking "fanatic" to a whole new level

Yeah, the key to beating Wisconsin is the defense performing. The key to beating Iowa is the offense performing. Despite my belief that Chinander does have the defense improving and the weird struggles of the offense, I have much more faith in the offense showing up.

Wouldn't it be freakin crazy if all three phases showed up for a game? I wonder what that would even look like. I would take an early Christmas miracle

  7. The key to beating Wisconsin is stopping their offense. Their defense just isn't as good when they are on the field a lot. Their whole game plan is to drive down the field, chew up clock, and score. Then the defense goes out for three to six plays, force a punt, and repeat. Pretty obvious, I know.

That being said, I don't see Nebraska's defense being consistent enough to even come close to being able to slow JT and the Badger offense down. I will stress again, I will be super happy if I'm wrong.

It be interesting to see if we win one or two more games with Zac Lee being healthy. We probably would have a conference championship, I guess.

Any kind of offense would have led to a conference championship in 2009. That defense was salty and perfect to shut down Big 12 offenses. It was so much fun to watch.

It was also fun hearing the announcers continuously say big Suh, because apparently Ndamukong was too hard to pronounce.

I think this has to do with two things the first one is pass blocking as we have no time to develop deeper routes and the second is a lack of a receiving threat out outside of JD and Wan'Dale. Teams take away JD and Wan'Dale has had to play out of the backfield a lot more than I think the coaches would like. This is where the loss of Stanley has really hurt us. Teams couldn't take away JD and Stanely so the vertical threat was there. This year we haven't had a reliable vertical threat so teams are sitting on shorter routes and clogging up the middle meaning our best option is lateral plays to our playmakers. Frost didn't forget how to call plays from last year to this year, but our deficiencies are hampering his playcalling ability.

Yeah, I think Frost is trying to setup the run game between the tackles and downfield passes. Doesn't seem to have worked all that well. I think having Stanley back one more season - or another WR stepping up other than JD - would make this offense look so much better based on what it seems like Frost wants to do.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few lateral passes, and then a few plays later, a fake lateral pass draw. Who knows if it would work though? It sounds good in my head though, and that's all that counts on a message board.

Yeah, the 2009 defense definitely didn't suck. It's unfortunate it was paired with an absolutely horrible offense

Probably he hardest position to secure. There ain’t a lot of those dudes and everyone wants them. Our LB recruiting is a concern.

Yeah, I think that's the biggest problem with the 3-4. However, it's hard to find great pass rushing ends for the 4-3 too.

Husker Fans need need to get over thinking our defensive problems are because we run a 3-4. It’s not.

There are examples of teams in our own conference that are successful running the 3-4 and they aren’t teams that have top 10 recruiting classes.

On top of that, we have xx actually ran quite a bit of 4-3 this year and we still sucked.

Fact is, no matter which you run, you have to have good players that play within the system.

We don’t and that’s our problem.

This is a lot of the problem I see. Especially at the linebacker position. It seems like the linebackers try to play outside what their assignment is to try and make a play. That's why there are stretches where the defense is decent.

It would also help tremendously to find a couple OLBs that can get after the passer. I think this defense would look pretty different with just this addition

  13. I stated when there were five games left, the only other game they would win was against Maryland. It will be close, but I think they do pull it off.

I don't see them beating Wisconsin or Iowa. You have no idea how I would love to be wrong though. This team needs the extra practices, especially considering the amount of young players.

  14. Doesn't Walters script the first "x" amount of plays to begin the game? It seems those go very well, but I'm not sure how much experience he has calling plays in the moment. There's a huge difference between the two.

In addition, let's not pretend Scott wasn't previously a successful offensive coordinator. That is literally how he got a head coaching gig to begin with. I don't think this just disappears. I just think he tries to be too fancy with the current players he has on the roster.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but Frost wants to have these guys ready to do well and be strong contributors when they do play.

Looking at the true freshmen, I don’t know if there are any besides Rahmir Johnson who could have been used better this year. Benhart will probably get some more time the last 3 games, but he needs a year in the weight room to be playing regularly. Henrich would have played this year, if he didn’t injure his shoulder.

I hope the freshman are amazing, or saving them to play was a waste of time.

I also think the staff could use the four games rule so much better, but instead it's one or two plays a game. The management of this has been pretty pathetic.

Are the players supposed to pick the “best leaders” or the “best players” as captains?  It helps if they are the same players, but it doesn’t always happen.

I don't know. I guess my point is that the captains are inconsistent and undisciplined, and the players that "look up to them" are the same. Especially at the LB position

  17. Just now, TheSker said:

I agree.....and I think the choice of captains is going to be interesting next year.

Our talent gap has Frost very very frustrated this season.  But I think not burning 'shirts is better for the long term.

Didn't the players pick the captains? If so, they didn't do a very good job

Is this board going to go thru every school that has changed coaches recently and create a thread on how they are doing so well while Nebraska is sucking?

The culture on this board just isn't there yet

    The year is 2021.

After being completely dismantled by Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan and a most recent loss to Iowa, Scott Frost in his Monday press conference says practice was good. He adds that things are tough but he knows where this thing is going.

    That damn Riley. Culture. CULTURE

    This isn't that complicated, really.

First, the leaders this season are not performing well on the field.

Another leader this season has been on campus as a transfer about 6 months.

You want to see what being bought in looks like, refer to the photo at the end of last season with Foster and Stolt hugging Frost.

Remember Stanley wishing for one more year on Twitter?

Yes, last seasons leaders were better.  By leaps and bounds.

    6 minutes ago, LumberJackSker said:

But which leaders haven't bought in like you said? We all know last years upperclassmen are out performing this years, but which ones aren't buying in?

I guess I still don't know what they are buying into. Hugging and wishing for one more year? These things are the result, not what they are buying into.

Also, who isn't buying in? Just because the team isn't good, doesn't mean they didn't buy in.

Both Fleck and Frost are great coaches. Why did we beat nearly the same Minnesota team by 4 scores last year? Buying in to a culture mean everything. PJ and Scott would both tell you the same thing.

For those seeking instant gratification - get lost. Nobody wants your whining a$$ on the board anyway. This is going to take time.

So, the Husker players were bought in last year, but not this year?
