Tremendously.  No fear of accountability or getting benched, or losing the rented black shirts....or getting fired or getting passed on the depth chart or playing more than 1 snap in 4 games to protect ur RS....

That would be pretty tough to put on a t-shirt though

Culture is an easy thing to blame it on when you suck....It put's the auspice all on the kids and not the staff.  Not saying culture doesn't need to change, but no way culture results in another 4-8 season.....I just wish the entire staff and team would just go dark.  Show up the next 3 weeks and handle your business.  Or not.

As to the OP, Fleck has done  a great job at Minnie.  He did a turn around at Western Michigan.  This is his 7th year as a HC vs Frost's 4th.  He came in immediately with a catchy slogan to instill his "culture".  He has.  Regardless of what the perception is, it's worked.  His 2 losing seasons out of 7 look like the outliers....Frost has been trying for 2 years and is still trying to get it/find it/complete buy in etc.....Blaming Rliey's guys....Oz, Stan, Farmer, Foster, JD, JoJo, Lamar, Stille, .......It's getting old....

Quick stat, Minnies red zone offense  (goal to go)is tied for 1st with 18 TD's on 18 trips ........Yep.  It's working.

And when Riley was here, they were doing poorly because Bo left his toxic culture.

My read on it was he insisted his defense was sound, and that if players did their jobs he wouldn't need to change. Problem is their jobs in his defense were really difficult against teams like Wisconsin. I know there were rumors players weren't doing their assignments in the infamous B1G championship game, but even if they were asking Sean Fisher to chase down Melvin Gordon on a fly sweep is a big ask.

Drawing up a "sound" defense isn't difficult, drawing up a sound defense that the players can execute is. I think Pelini's was sound across the board, and was almost revolutionary in how well it put players in places to succeed against the spread. Against other offenses, it asked a lot more of the players and we didn't have LSU-level talent other than Suh.

Agreed. Man, that 2009 defense was elite. Offense was on the other end of the spectrum that year. What could have been...

Ya, Hagg seemed like a perfect fit for the Peso position. Bo's Peso package, along with his match up zone coverages by the DBs, were pretty effective vs Spread Offenses. It didn't translate so well to the BIG10 though.......:(

No, because the main goal is to stop the passing game. I will say, if we had the players we had in 2009, it wouldn't really matter what defense was being run, they would have been good.

Bo got messed up moving to the Big Ten. He used this defense specifically to stop spread teams like Missouri. For some reason, he never adjusted.

Completely agree. 3-4 defense will not work if your LB play is shaky. By far the most important part of the scheme.

I would say linebacker play in a 3-4 is the most important in order for it to be successful. (and perhaps the NT). The linebackers have to have great eye discipline. We have seen what happens every week when they don't.

In addition, the outside linebackers need to be able to get after the QB. There is no one currently on the team (that I know of) at that position capable of doing this. Again, we have seen the results every week.

Maybe it's coaching. Maybe it's the linebackers wanting to work outside the system to make a play. Honestly, I'm not really sure what it is at this point.

Assuming you gleaned that post and didn't read it?

Oh no, I read it. It was just difficult to read the the whole thing with blurry vision from laughing and crying so hard after I saw, "I'm so incredibly fearful that next year will be like Mike Riley's 2nd season. We start hot and get to 7-0 only to get slammed back to reality."

I mean, I wish that was my only fear for next year's team. Going 7-0 to begin the season. Hell, even getting 7 wins total. I think of all the things to be fearful of, going 7-0 to start the season, and then getting "slammed back to reality" is probably one of the last things on my list.

  7. I don't think people understand the 3-4 all that well. The d-line shouldn't be making plays right and left. They are there to eat up blockers. The linebackers should be making the plays, but they are always so far out of position, it makes the d-line look horrible.

In addition, we have no pass rushers at the OLB position, so this makes the pass defense look horrible too. It's so frustrating to watch.

I saw a graphic recently that said that KSU had zero 4 or 5 stars while Oklahoma had over 50. Not trying to bash on Scott, but scheme and coaching matter, too.

I'm so tired of people saying this team needs to get more talent. Yes, every team needs more talent, but not to beat Indiana and Purdue. Nebraska has more talent at the starting positions than either of these teams.

    Scheme and coaching matter

You should go watch that play again. If our tackle doesn't have one of the most pathetic blocking attempts I've ever seen that's an easy TD. The play call was not bad, the execution was.

You mean the same tackle that has looked like that all year long? It wasn't shocking to me to see such horrible execution from him. He has been consistently horrible all year.

    Schematically, it's pretty good.

    Execution, not so much.

If the players can't perform what is being asked, is it really that good schematically? And the play calling was just horrible. Frost was trying to prove how smart he was instead of just calling simple plays to score.

  11. The Purdue game should not have even been close going into the half.

I didn't hear anyone saying the defense was going to be amazing this year. All I read is hopefully they improve a little bit. They are playing at about the level I thought they would.

The defense did their job for two quarters. The offense failed. Again. Four drives started in Purdue territory and only three points. Are you kidding me? This offense is garbage
