What happens if we fire 'em all, hire ex-Huskers, and continue to win an average of 6-7 games a year? Is there a longer honeymoon period for ex-Huskers?

What if we hire Nick Saban or Urban Meyer and they continue to win an average of 6-7 games a year? Is there a longer honeymoon period for proven top-tier coaches?

If Mike Riley coached under Tom Osborne or had some sort of tie to the program, he'd have a lot more support. There'd still be the haters, not denying that, but most of us don't support him anymore because the very basis of our support was simply giving him a chance. He's had his chance. He doesn't remind me of any successful football coach I've ever seen. He's not a raging a-hole, and I think we all appreciate that. But he also says a lot of nothing and he kind of acts like losing doesn't really bother him all that much.

If Mike Riley was my Uncle, I'd have a great uncle. Just a genuinely good guy. But he's a bad football coach.

Because 63-38 meltdown in 2012 was so much better?

I remember it sucked. But we also beat them in a pretty exciting game the previous year. Additionally, Ohio state was probably the best team in the country that year. The only reason 2012 really sucked was because our loss to OSU and Wisconsin. It seemed like we couldn't win the big games.

But all of that, in reality and in retrospect, is infinitely better than struggling to beat bottom-tier teams and losing to non-p5 opponents.

So yes. It was so much better. And I'm not afraid to admit that.

  3. Firing Riley right now doesn't really do anything unless we're planning on landing Les Miles.

I'm pretty sure Riley will get fired if this season ends up as bad as I think it's going to. But I would guess that he doesn't get fired until after the last regular season game.

  4. When Trev Alberts got rid of UNO Wrestling, I was pretty furious. How do you ax a program that has won the championship 3 years in a row? Seemed crazy, and he seemed like the biggest idiot for making that decision.

But then you step back and realize that UNL runs athletics in this state and it probably wasn't his decision to be made.

Which honestly says a lot about his commitment to UNL.

Nebraska wrestling has finished top 10 since 2014. Not sure if that is coincidence or causation.

Regardless, I don't think it's easy to find an AD with a proven track record of success when it comes to coaching hires. Typically successful coaches stick around. It's much easier to find ADs with a track-record of failure.

So I've come around. I'm not an expert by any means, and it's likely that there are better options out there that I or most people are unaware of. So take this with a grain of salt, but I'd support Trev.

We haven't played OSU close since what our first season in B1G?  History shows it is a good game for them to pad their stats which predates Riley.  Last year I was fooled into thinking the blowouts were behind us but again we had already chalked it up as a loss and didn't bother to show up.  Hopefully the next staff can change that mindset.

We've only played Ohio State 3 times if you don't count the two times before 1960...

Bo did get blown out in Columbus, but he didn't get 63-3 blown out.

I wasn't even that big of fan of Bo, but quite honestly, I kind of miss him. This new staff is embarrassing. It's more of a conversation piece to talk about how bad the Huskers are and talk to my friends about how good Iowa looks this year.

    What would you prefer?

    Realistic.

Edit: I prefer to be realistic. Maybe I'm being a bit pessimistic. I could not care less about the faith other people have. More power to them. But don't blow a bunch of smoke up my ass and expect me to hop on board.

  7. It continues to blow my mind how optimistic our fan base is. We don't look good. We have pretty big issues on both sides of the ball and once we play a team with some real talent, it's going to get exposed.

I'm fully expecting another nail biter versus a bottom-tier opponent. It's pretty sad, honestly.

  8. Everyone thinks that people just want Scott Frost here because he's a Nebraska Alum. Truth is, Scott Frost has a pretty damn impressive resume and, quite honestly, he may be too good for our program.

We're not going to be the only program going after this guy, if we do. Florida is the most obvious. We'd be lucky to get him.

As long as we beat the crap out of Penn St.  and beat Wisconsin I dont even care about the rest.

Penn St.  Looks VERY motivated.  Almost  like Alabama.  And speaking of the SEC why are they allowed to hit hard, but OUR conference keeps DQ'ing our guys?  DOUBLE STANDARD.  Wheres the fairness NCAA?

Did you watch that game at all today? If Penn state and Iowa play like they did today, and we play like we did today, they'll stomp us. And one could argue today was the best our team has looked all season. And when I say that, I mean the offense showed signs of life with the run game and our defense was actually capable of pulling off some stops.

I don't care how much Mike Riley "likes this team", they look to be the worst Nebraska team on the field in the last 20 70 years.

  10. Scott Frost is probably too humble to do this, but who wouldn't go into every interview sporting a copy of gamebreaker 99 in their pocket. "So why should we hire you." "Well, as you can see, I was on the cover of gamebreaker 99"...

    Boom. Sold.

On a side note: Anyone else remember playing gamebreaker against your friends and it was cheating to play as the 95 huskers? Those were the days...

  11. Iowa deserves some respect after that. That's a tough loss, but what a hell of a game. Can't be too disappointed with that against a solid Penn State team.

Can't say that I'm not jealous to see Iowa be so successful.

Just think, if Solich was never HC and Tom changed his mind, stayed for another 6 years or so and then handed things over to Frost in 2003, a lot of our national embarrassing losses would have never happened, Pederson/Callahan would have never happened. Riley wouldn't be here.

We would probably be in the Big 12 right now playing OU every year with the round robin scheduling. We probably wouldn't be saying we've been without a conference championship since 1999.

So, Frost has tremendous upside. I do not think Nebraska is a great job that our fans make it out to be. Our program isn't what it was before. It's just not. Remember, Osborne coached under Devaney and had no head coaching experience when he took over. Winning 9-10 games a year is great as long as those 2-3 losses aren't being blown out 76-30 or 62-3.

Tom's not an idiot. He left when he did for a reason. Also, another 6 years, and I bet he still would have given the job to Solich. You're delusional.

  13. Our DBs continue to play 10 yards off the ball.

Our DLine continues to not exist.

Fortunately, Rutgers is bad enough to make enough mistakes not to completely capitalize on it every drive, but they have a few drives that look easy.

Our OLine continues to not exist.

We throw on 1st down way more times than we should.

Tanner Lee continues to make terrible decisions whenever he doesn't have time to throw, which is nearly every down because 1. We throw the ball too much and 2. Our Oline doesn'ft exist.

Our supposed depth at RB continues to appear to be a Wives tale.

We might see Lee get benched, but probably not, regardless of his performance.

Our Kicker and Punter continue to look great.

Maybe DPE is able to run one back, but he'll also probably muff one and let way more hit the turf than should.

Our coverage on special teams will continue to be horrendous. They might run one back on us as well.

Whoever turns over the ball least wins this one.

Eh, 2009 I felt like they were back. Problem was we didn't have an offense that year. Seems like the D and O can never be on the same page.

Our defense was pretty solid in 2009, but mostly because we had a #2 overall draft-pick that was recruited by Billy. The problem with Husker football is we only ever have a single ingredient for success at the college level, and to be elite, you need to be pretty solid throughout.
