    Want to know something hilarious?

Before the season even started, I had posted some posts where I talked about how this team in season's past had played with almost no effort.  Go ahead, do a search and you'll find them.

A bunch of posters literally took the opportunity to call me an idiot, to tell me I was wrong, that I didn't know what I was talking about.

Let this thread (page 11) where the halftime commentators (Dave Wannstedt and other) are calling out Nebraska's poor effort serve notice that:

    a) I do know what I am talking about,

    b) I do know effort on the football field when I see it, and

    c) maybe the people who attacked me previously for saying those things, really don't know as much as their bombastic comments would lead one to believe.

Truth is: lack of effort, playing 1/2 speed, not caring whether they win or lose, etc are problems that have been plaguing this team for the last 6 seasons at least.  The scary part?  I seem to be the only person that saw what the real problem was.  Almost everyone else said either we don't have the "talent" or it is bad coaching.  And while I'm not saying Nebraska's talent or coaching couldn't be better, I'm saying that playing half speed, playing poorly, and not caring if you lose...amplifies all the other problems.

football itself is becoming a dinosaur

Most people don't seem to understand, or even be aware of, this.  HS player percentages are down, way down across most of the US.  Even the Nebraska high school numbers are off by 20% from the peak in the 90's.  Yet nationally, more kids are playing than ever, how is that?  Those gains were realized in one place; The South.   Long term this will forever change the landscape of CFB.  Juggernaut programs like tOSU, Michigan, Norte Dame and Penn State will still roll on due to their access to local talent and higher profiles making it easier to pull in national talent, even then they will be in a dogfight for the Southern talent pool.

Whoever comes here will have a massive uphill battle.  They will need to stabilize the program short term, get NU back into the national discussion and keep it there, while establishing recruiting channels that can take years to pay off and in-between all of that win enough games to keep the fans happy, all while dealing with a long term demographic change that will produces less local & regional talent.  Not saying it can't be done, it will take a very special and hard working person to make it happen.

You gloss over two decades of what was part of one the greatest dynasties in CFB history with that kind of statement?

No.  It was Franks program, I'm sure it took a lot for TO to remain in the shadows.  What could Tom do to help recruiting "why hello young man, you won't be playing for me but I sure would like you to come to NU".

What?  Name any other AD without Google.  I can think of one, DeLoss Dodd, only due to his unique name and the incredible job he did at UT, and he's retired.  SE was correct insofar ADs should not really be known.

Mmmmmkkkkkay....  Nebraska is a fishbowl, just like any other Blue Blood program.  Overall, we actually seem to handle ourselves pretty well.  I've yet to see anyone fly planes over games with banners slamming the coach (Tenn, Mich), possibly make death threats (Fla), or poison historic trees (granted that guy was a nutter but point still stands).  If we get a new coach people will be critical, people will send messages and post how they think the new guy isn't cutting if for (insert reason here).  I cant remember who said it at the announcement of SEs termination, it's when those messages stop, that's when we need to worry.

So yes, our tradition means something to us, but its a non factor in the walls outside this state

Highly disagree.  I travel extensively for work with much of that in the South, when people find out I'm from Nebraska more often than not I hear "what happened to you guys?".  From Florida fans that told me how Nebraska ruined their childhood with one game, too older Bama fans that tell me about seeing those Husker-Tide bowl games in the 60s and 70s.  Outsiders love to hate us and they sure as hell respect us and our history.

WE bolted as soon as we could because we weren't winning

No.  The perception was the power was permanently shifting to the Southern schools, mainly Texas, and things that NU had supported, like unequal profit sharing, was now deemed unacceptable since our slide into mediocrity meant we got a smaller share of the pie.

The Big Ten offered long-term stability, more equality, more prestige and a much bigger payday.

They took us when we had no leverage.

Consider Missouri literally had the Governor of the state championing them to no avail.  We had Harvey, in a car, with a cell phone.  To me, that shows the weight NU carries.

They will decide if we ever get that leverage in most ways.

There's no conspiracy to keep Nebraska down.  There wasn't in the B12 and it most definitely isn't in the B!G.  Having more teams compete at the highest level is good for ratings and National perception.  Having one or two teams running the show will eventually weaken the conference, look at the SEC, with Bama pretty much a shoe-in for the SEC title and a playoff spot why go to any other SEC school?

TO is 80.  That guy has given this University all he can.  Let his helping with the AD search be his final work (unless they ask for input on the next HC search).

Stop.  I hope they do not, Tom has been trying to put time and space between himself and The Program for decades, let the man be, we need to move on from him and he from us, just let the man be.

    David Shaw

IMO the field is wide open.   I think Frost gets a seat at the table along with other qualified candidates.  I think this hire shows they are serious about finding the right one for the job not just pandering to the masses.

I'm a fan of Shaw and I think his flavor of football would play well here, he could turn down the intellectual a few notches and ramp up the brutality pretty easily.

They need to "right size" the stadium and replace the bleachers with seats, reducing capacity some, and making the experience more comfortable.

They also need to stop playing bad football. People will show up for a winner.

I gave up my seats because of this.  I was in Section 26 and jammed in like sardines.  I had seats 3&4, once when I arrived seat backs were in my space and some of 1&2 we had no place to sit.  When the people from 1&2 arrived I they just looked dumbfounded.  When everyone stood for the Anthem my friend grabbed the seat back and shoved them down making room.  It is a joke.  Heap onto that the people behind me that sold their tickets for most games and only come to one a year and bitch the entire time and it becomes a terrible experience.

The expansion was a mistake, I don't think they understood the changing dynamics of the fans.  Now that we have space, I agree, make it 75k and spread everyone out.

Listen, if White is the best candidate available great, but I hope NU doesn't hire him just to go after Frost.

This is what I'm afraid of, the masses seem to want Frost we will do anything to make that happen.  I want us to make an actual concerted effort to find the best fit, I have my dreams (Dabo) and those I think would fit perfectly (Shaw) but to just throw up our hands and toss it to Scotty is not right.  Do the search, if Scott is the right guy great just dont give into the mases

Several critical steps necessary to move forward -

    1. Any coach that is hired (including our current coach) should be given at least 5 years.

    2. Although the number is shrinking, our “emporer’s new clothes” fans - who still are too many - need to step into reality. Our team is not entitled to victories just because we have a Red “N” on our helmet, or because we were national champions 20 years ago. Support our players and their coach.

    3. High school players today were babies the last time we were a top 10 program - 2001. In their eyes, we are an average program in an average conference - because we are! Come to grips with that, and the fact that recruits look at these message boards - what they read here today is chaos.

    4. We will only rebuild this program one practice, one game, one year at a time. It will take years, and supportive determination. No magical coaches.

    5. Finally, I guess we should be thankful we no longer play in the Big 12. A few weeks ago, OU beat Ohio State in Columbus, and last week Iowa State beat Oklahoma - in Norman.

    Just the facts.

    1.  HCMR was sold as the experienced leader that would turn us around immediately, not in the future.

    2.  We should expect victories and accept hard fought losses.  No one should be shamed for honoring this program's past, it is among the very best in football, you can toss it aside if you want, I think most of us would rather keep it.  Or better yet you can follow Iowa, they win games and have pretty much zero past and seemingly no expectations.

    3.  Kids are smart, they can figure out what goes on here, passionate fans that want their program to succeed at the highest levels.  They can reach out and see that great past you seem to think doesn't matter.  The Big Ten isn't very average, we have a top 5 team and two more in the top 10, seems pretty good to me.

    4.  A coach that lacks the ability to lead will never improve a program no matter how many practices they get.

    5.  Not really.  The Big 12 hasn't produced a National Championship team in over a decade.

You should learn the difference between fact and opinion.

While this season has been a disaster there is one silver lining that is completely clear.  Scott Frost will be the next head coach at Nebraska.  There is no guessing who the next coach is, will the AD make another mistake, will top coaches come here, etc.  It is very clear and simple.

You get Frost and you get him now.  You announce it and let him continue as long as he wants for the season he is putting together at UCF.  Simply put...you can't blow this chance inside the 3 with 4 downs.  If we blow this it will forever haunt us.  Do it now while nothing is on the line for either school.  If you wait until the end of the season where UCF is making a run to win their conference and UCF is bidding for a big time bowl it will be pushed off due to the distraction.  Further at that point we will be competing against other schools.  Git r done and it will be a lot less dramatic.  This is the biggest game left this season...getting Frost locked up.

    No.

We would ruin his season at UCF, it would also show a huge lack of respect on NU's part towards UCFs program and players.

Serious question- what are the head coach's' game time duties?  It seems all the decisions are made by the coordinators.  Maybe game management duties like clock management and penalties?

Actually not a lot.  A few HC's were taking over play calling in the last few years to be more in the game.  The HC slot is moving more into a CEO type role, basically, the person that can have the vision and find the talent to make it happen.

if Riley wins 9 games this season (pre-Bowl) that would mean he beat at least 3 of the following 4 teams: Wisconsin, Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State.

Even if he splits that and doesn't get a Bo level blowout in the other two, I think he gets another year.

Everyone saying he's gone, remember we all thought Bo was done when SE was hired.
