I want focus when a game is still in doubt.

Anyone here have stressful points at work, or a high-stress job in general?  Mine isn't a peach most days and I can tell you breaking focus for a quick second is massively beneficial in regrouping and maintaining focus over a long period of time.  Little breaks and moments of levity, like this, should be encouraged and I was happy to see it.

  2. This trickles down.  Overall participation in HS football is way down, except in the South.  Even Nebraska is off by more than 20% since its peak in the 90s.   Unless all levels get out front on head safety this sport is doomed.  It only takes one State to ban football (or at least contact) and all the chips will eventually fall.  Don't laugh, the thought of a State banning football might seem impossible, that is what most people thought about indoor smoking bans in the early 90's, once California did, it was only a matter of time.

Not playing our seond and third string players throughout the season has been our problem since about year 3 of Solich

To be fair this has been an ongoing philosophy in CFB for a decade or more now.  Reps are reps and reps=better play.  While that idea seems to be fading slowly you still see many games that are well in-hand with the #1's still playing.

I guess because we remain mired in this win now or fire the coach mentality.

Were this another Bo type hire I think people would be defending him and hanging it on "he's learning".  Problem is MR was sold as the turnkey package, the guy that has all the talent and ability and was held back by the lack of facilities and money.  He was expected to hit the ground running, IMO the jury is still out on that although it is not looking good.

Just wondering if there's a coordinator that husker fans haven't hated on. Somehow every single one is a bum who doesn't a thing about coaching. I truly want to know what they'll be happy with.

Nope.  We've hated them all.  Worst fans ever, might as well lock up the stadium and call it a day.

  5. Trev seems to be a good administrator with a track record of making tough choices.  Although if you ask die-hard UNO fans you'll  get a different story with the handling of the Football and Wrestling teams being canceled via text message IIRC.  I still think he'd bring in quality people and be level heading and even-handed.  Obviously, his pedigree will play well with boosters.

As for coaching, no, you scratched the surface on that.  Dabo, Jimbo, Saben, none have any previous tie to their current posts.  Meyer is an Ohio kid but didn't play at tOSU (he got his grad degree there).  A good coach is just that, while some fit better in places, I have no doubt that any of the top 5-6 coaches in the country would have success at pretty much any P5 school

ETA:  Remember Frost didn't have the smoothest time here.  He was widely seen as a traitor for going to Stanford, then returning hat in hand once TO got things rolling.  I remember he was booed off the field.  He is unproven in the big seat, while I'd like to see a native son come back and get things rolling.

I'm curious as to how a few of your fans can continue to dispute the UT game ruling?

For me it was never the ruling, it's the feeling (maybe fact) that had the roles been reversed the play would've never been reviewed.  Also, I believe the review of that play was outside the bounds of what was reviewable by the Big 12 at that time, although it's been so long I can't remember if that was true or not at this point.

Give me Wisconsin's offense which is everything we used to be.

This is not Rocket Science. Assuming a new coach is eventually hired, we need to get back to our roots...build an offense that is built around controlling the clock via a punishing ground game, then use the run to setup the Playaction pass.

Why the hell is this concept so difficult for our athletic leadership to grasp?

Good lord, it's so easy!  Send a note to HCMR right now!  Speedtburn for AD!

Get the right players in here we can run any offense - even Tom's old O.  However, one missing ingrediant - Tom's wizard like genius in calling the plays.  There were times when you wonder if Tom had a direct connection to the opposing team's DC coordinator's mind.

Maybe we perceive it differently.  Major Applewhite once said out O "isn't rocket science" while that was perceived as a dig at TO, it was a compliment.  Tom beat you by beating on you, we didn't outrun you or gimmick you, we ran right at you, again, again again and again until you finally broke.

  9. LOL.  The media is just reinforcing the narrative of SE needed to go.  If HRMR won 11 games last year, was in the playoffs and looked to repeat it this year all of this would be spun in a positive.

Doesn't meet with coaches, becomes doesn't micromanage the programs, he's a big picture guy and lets the coaches do their job.

Booster upset about him being standoffish, becomes SE not bowing to booster money.

Doesn't speak to the media, is hard ot get ahold of, becomes he's the man behind the curtain that doesn't want to draw away from the students on the field.

Was firing him the right choice?  I sure hope so, make no mistake the media is complicit in supporting the narrative UNL wants to generate.

The search - they made the decision yesterday to fire Eichorst. They started the search for his successor hours ago.  Literally.

They're asking Tom Osborne for his opinion

Will we ever stop with this?  I give TO all the respect for what he did on the sidelines, that was two decades ago.  Let the man be and let this program move on.

Callahan, Pelini and Riley were/are unworthy coaches for an institution like Nebraska, except of course, when they were actually hired.

Cally was an eleventh-hour hire after Steveo completely botched Solich's firing.  SP was very much incorrect in his thinking that we are Nebraska and anyone would fall at our feet to coach here.

Gotta agree with you about BP, in fact, were TO still the AD I have little doubt he'd still be the HC.

Riley was the safe hire.  He was well respected among football wonks and nerds, even though not well-known outside of that realm.  His age precludes him from being here for more than 5-7 years.  Were he to turn the team around he'd announce an heir apparent and retire, if it goes poorly he decides he's to old for this and steps down.

  12. Jim Haslett? Cincy LB coach.. Consulted Penn State in 2015, few HC jobs DC for Redskins... Couldn't make that jump to HC, Nebraska would probs be a better gig than what he is doing now... And he's good, just kinda sitting there for the picking

  13. We will see the direction of our program on NSD. If we can get some of the big fish we are after, I think Riley can and will lead this team to at very minimum a West title in the next 3 years.

Penn State is coming off the worst scandal in College Sports history, they won the B1G and are #5 in the Nation. Glad we can compete for a West title with in three years.

  14.

I am not sure if there has ever been a more perfect hire than JH and Meyer for their schools. It sort of is just one of those things that happens sometimes.

Kind of like how Tom Osborne was a perfect hire for NU in 1972. While Osborne wasn't a NU grad, he was a native Nebraskan who was in the right place in the right time to take over for Devaney.

NU has been trying to fill those shoes for 20 years.

Umm what? Tom was with the program since '64, was a proven OC by '72

  15.

nobody has any clue how to fix it.

It is kinda simple. The folksy undercurrent of the nice guy that wants to come here for low money and coach for the honor of being at Nebraska needs to go away. We do not need the next Jimbo Fisher, David Shaw or Tom Herman, we need Jimbo Fisher, David Shaw or Tom Herman. A proven HC that will cut another program to the bone to lose.

I haven't given up on MR but his hire is the ultimate hedge. In 4-5 years if we are still winning nine games but losing the big ones, he announces his retirement. If he is has really turned us around that extends out two maybe four years.

  16. A great line from a post-game column here in Madison:

    Oates

I have to admit I thought hiring Riley was a head-scratcher, but the Nebraska team this year is much improved over what the Badgers have seen recently. A little better passing from your QB position, and you would be even stronger.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Great article. It seems Nebraska-Wisconsin could develop into a rivalry. We need to start winning more than a few of these first though.

  17. Agree. The WSJ had a great article on the cupcakes going away. While I dont think that will completely happen, putting a tough team near the front is a great idea, if you lose it doesn't hurt you to much down the line, if you win, it could be the difference between being number 4 or 5.

  18. My dad and uncle aren't renewing. Last year was their first year holding tickets. It has nothing to do with the team. It has to do with the seats that aren't wide enough for their rears, let alone their shoulders, and apparently they had some fairly lame fans sitting around them. Add to that the 2000 minimum donation on top if ticket prices they decided it wasn't worth it. They'll buy tickets to the games they really want to be at and sit somewhere they really want and come out way ahead.

2k was that each? If so those were some sweet seats.

I'm like your dad, I had seats 3-4, many times we would get there and the people in the middle already had back rests to the end of the row, and that was without the people in 1 and 2 or 5 and 6, we were crushed in there so tightly, I was miserable. I took my donation cash and funneled it into a sweet TV and set up for my basement. I go to one or two games a year, I miss it but its not worth the hassle any more.

Sounds like Carl had his share of problems. Too bad people can't simply leave him alone. Some have this weird obsession with taking fallen celebrities or public figures and rubbing their faces in their crimes or transgressions over and over and over. It's a very unhealthy sickness.

Curious.....where are the examples of people rubbing his face in it or the sickness of which you speak? Is it here on HB or somewhere else? Can't say I've seen much of that type of thing around here.

This. I live in Lincoln and the fact Carl has been here for 15 months and teaching at SCC all without a single hit in the paper, it sure sounds like people ARE leaving him alone. Once he does get hi name in the paper for applying for a public job he goes on to blame Nebraska people for.... Well I dont know..

Whatever demons he has I hope for his kids sake he get past it.
