  1. For the haters www.firesteve.com Enjoy
  2. Anyone have a complete list?
  3. I've coached high school football for 8 years now.
  4. Eric, you're 100% right. Just exactly dead on. Not even a week ago, I said that if we needed to keep bringing out Osborne and McBride to fire us up, we were in big trouble, and you know what people said? "Osborne and McBride didn't work with the team all week and make the scheme." "Sievers was the biggest emotional factor." bullsh#t. Was Sievers not there this week? Weren't the same coaches working up the scheme? This is totally on the players. There's one tiny little nagging thing in the back of my mind, though. Callahan had a similar problem last year. In fact, Sean Salisbury says that the Raiders are the most gutless team in football. So that's two straight years that Callahan's teams lack leadership from among the players. They lack guts, fire, balls, fortitude, whatever you want to call it. Does Callahan promote this sort of atmosphere, or is it just bad luck on his part that he's been in this situation for two straight years? I really hope it's the latter. Two final thoughts: Who's worse, Cosgrove or Bohl? Secondly, is it better to just go on winning 8-10 games a year, but never realistically have a shot at a title, or to lose everything you hold dear (streaks like bowl games, non-losing seasons, etc.) for a year or two in order to rise to national prominance again? The first question is whimsy. The second one is something everybody needs to think about and answer for themselves as we drift toward 5-6 and no bowl game. c-husker
  5. A wise man once said "A fish rots from the head down." Interpret that how you will, but I have no problem with Elmassian. If anything, it's the entire defensive scheme that seems poor. I grasp your point about our secondary, but it may be jumping to conclusions to automatically assume it's the secondary coach. Maybe they were in a better position to succeed last year. Maybe they're better zone players. I'm sure Cosgrove is the one who decides what we're doing defensively from game to game, and if it's not playing to the strengths of your personnel, then there's the problem. I look at what Wisconsin was able to do in a year. Last year their defense was horrible. This year, with largely the same players, they are close to the top in the nation in total defense. That's impressive. We just need to find out what they did between this year and last, and see if we can mirror that. c-husker
  6. I guess it gets pretty easy to feel good after a win. I'll tell you this, though, if we have to keep digging up Osborne and McBride to come in and fire up the players and fans the way Colorado used to dig up Sal Aunese every week, we're in trouble.
  7. how the hell is it a lateral move to go from "co-defensive coordinator" to defensive coordinator. No matter what OU does on defense, Pelini will never get all the credit, because they were doing it before he got there. He would have carte blanche to do whatever he wanted in Gainseville, because Spurrier could give a sh#t less about D. I do agree about the bond shared by the coaches at OU, however. Time will tell. Who knows if Spurrier will even end up there.
  8. Big Tom, 7-3 on double up week. Pretty impressive. That's 22-17-1 for the year. Not amazing, but not bad. You seem to be having some trouble in the Big (Eleven) Ten, except, of course, where it matters -- at the top. I say give Orton the Heisman right now. Everyone else in that conference should be in the Big XII North, because it seems like nobody wants to win that division, either. Speaking of the North, I learned a long time ago never to bet the Huskers. They always screw ya. Looking forward to next week. C-Husker (the C stands for can't wait for week 6)
  9. Several questions, Tom. First, how good are these Catholics? One win could be luck, but right now the BYU game is looking like the fluke. Secondly, A&M better than advertised? Where the hell did they come from? Third, is Iowa sh**ty? Fourth, is Kansas's defense for real? And finally, did fasteddie really get VD? c-husker (the c stands for curious)
  10. I hate to add to all the hating madness, but I have never liked Horne. I'm sure I never will. I can't put my finger on it. But amen to the fact that Jackson at least deserved a whiff on the field. To be honest, I didn't think our line was so bad, it's just that Ross's style is so dependent on the cut that he couldn't make. Plus, this is the first decent defense we've played so far (I'm still shocked that So. Miss's Defense was so bad). All in all, it's like they said in the Journal Star. We're 2-1. We should be 3-0. We easily could be 1-2. We'll take what we've accomplished and relish the week off. c-husker (the C stands for C-ya in October)
  11. I must admit, I missed week 1 (or was it 2?), but after checking this out on a tip from a friend, I must say, this is the best bookie sheet on the web. Of course, I could give a sh#t about the picks. c-husker (the C stands for Chucklingmyassoff)
  12. For an "old guy", you sound pretty damn smart. I'm not much of a numbers guy, but I do know that we had 476 total yards in offense last week which, while down from the W. Illinois game, was still 75 yards more than our highest output (yes, highest) of last year. Also, we are currently 7th in the nation in rushing offense (11th in overall offense). Great post. c-husker (the C is for Callahanrules!)
  13. So much to say. First, we didn't get beat. I hate to be the douche bag that points out the difference between losing and getting beat, but there is a difference. We lost this one. But at least we didn't get beat. To the contrary, we had almost twice as many yards and more than twice as many first downs. Kudos to the offense, it's working like a f'ing charm. Everybody knows that turnovers will kill you (and if there is anybody out there stupid enough to second guess the West Coast offense, understand that it's a ball control offense, and five turnovers is NOT controlling the ball). The rushing game hasn't looked this good in years. The attack is balanced, and that's refreshing. I'm a little scared about this road game. Hopefully we can make all our shifts and motion effectively in a hostile environment. Who the hell knows, it might be good for Joe to get a road game under his belt and settle down a bit. He's just trying so damn hard. You have to admire his character. I think Barrett Ruud said it best: "I think Joe's getting a little sick of everyone patting him on the back and telling him it's OK." I agree. He's going to go forward. Norvell said that when they watched film, he saw that we left at least 600 more yards of offense out on the field, we just didn't find the open man. The defense has to cause more turnovers, and they know it. And, as far as game breakers go, we missed Amos big time. We also signed a big time juco from New Mexico. A kid that plays receiver, runs a 4.2 (no sh#t, a 4.2) and has a 38" vertical jump (no sh#t, a 38" vertical, I swear). He was at the game Saturday, and said that when Nebraska lost the game, he felt like he lost. He signed before he got on the plane Sunday to leave. They say he might play both sides of the ball. Now is the time to pull together, fans. The rest of you fair-weather a$$hole$ can clear off the bandwagon right now, nobody needs you anyway. And while I'm on the topic of fans, I applaud everyone in the Norteast end zone for the standing ovation as Southern Miss. left the field. They deserved it. c-husker (the C stands for cautiouslyoptimistic)
  14. Eric, As a person who has been with you personally to Lazzari's on more than one occasion, I am offended at the assertion that Lincoln has no pizzerias. I would also like to throw in The Isle's on Havlock (Leaning Tower) as quality pizza, and if you are in Omaha, Big Fred's (120th & Pacific) is pretty damn good. Plus, the M & N Sandwich shop has to be a factor, and to hell with you if you say any different. Norm and his power chow at the shop more than make up for a distinct lack of atmosphere (sorry, Norm). Also, the gyro wars between Ali Baba's and George's make for some great late night dining. But for real, it's the tradition that brings 'em, and the atmosphere that grows on 'em and keeps them here. Go Big Red. C-Husker (restauranteur)
