  1.

Well let me just say as a lowly consumer of this board that I find the constant carping that the national announcers/refs/ESPN are agin' us more tiresome than posters who complain about Bo Pelini.

But I would never want you to threaten those carpers with banishment.

I'd hardly categorize myself as a "constant carper". I can't speak for segments that highlight something in other programs because I don't care to research whether the presenter has all of the facts. Since, through local media and such, I believe in Pelini's/Stafford's explanation of what happened, and considering what we see from coaches all over the country, I feel the GD Crew (especially Howard) implied a lot of negative untruths about the P/S exchange (in contrast to the actual reporting that had been done on the exchange earlier in the week). Why did they do this? Ignorance, vendetta, sensationalization, all of it, none of it, I don't know. But it was inaccurate and deceiving to those that wasn't tuned into the local media's reports. Also, they started the segment as if it was going to be about "coaches behaving badly". It turned out to be "Bo behaving badly" (which imo he wasn't).

I started this thread to vent and to point out what I believe was a hatchet job; not to whine that ESPN hates Nebraska. Don't like my stance? Don't read my postings.

  2. This was my fear after SEC snatched Mizzou and A&M. Now that Mizzou is off the board, besides ND, there isn't a decent Midwestern football program with a TV market to be had. I don't think an immediate money grab with Rutgers/Maryland is worth the risk of potential long term impact to the B1G's football quality, which could then have long term negative financial impacts.

I'd much rather see Virginia (which has the stellar academic reputation that the B1G supposedly loves) than either of Rutgers/Maryland. Since the B1G seems to think they HAVE to expand to keep pace with the SEC, I'd rather they break this "connected states" philosophy and go get a college football big fish like Oklahoma (I think OK is a Midwestern-values-like state moreso than NJ/MD). Although still a long shot, I think a move like that could potentially get ND's attention.

  3. What did Stafford say this week to media as to why there was that little argument on the sidelines last week?

Stafford basically said he was frustrated that the defensive allignments weren't getting communicated fast enough from the sideline. (I'm guessing Bo called out Stafford for being out of position on the final first half PSU TD, and Stafford fired back at him.) Bo even admitted after the game that Stafford was essentially correct in his assessment of the problem.

I had no problem with the exchange and it actually seemed to light a fire under both of them and even the rest of the team. Other than to further a specific agenda, I can't under why the GD Crew would have a problem with the exchange after it was clearly explained.

  4. (For those that saw the segment this morning on GameDay)..

I know how a lot of us already feel about ESPN, but jeez, was that ridiculous or what?

Basically implied that the Pelini/Stafford "incident" was due to Pelini saying something personal. And that saying something personal to a player is out of line.

Brought up the NW game situation with Antonio Bell.

    How this could impact recruiting.

How coaches should never lay a hand on a player.

    etc..etc...

They started with a montage of many coaches yelling/acting a fool on the sideline (Spurrier, Tubberville, Chip Kelly, Pelini, others), then proceeded to only talk about Stafford/Pelini and then made a bunch of statements that one would infer they meant to be that their statements was what happened between Stafford/Pelini. Both clearly explained what was going on in post game remarks throughout the week.

If I'm an NU official, I'm firing off I'll kinds of communications to ESPN for that hatchet job.

The whole segment really ticked me off.

  5. I haven't had a chance to watch the replay.

One of the calls I thought was dubious, but didn't impact the outcome so maybe thats why I haven't heard much about it, was the reviewed Martinez fumble that the Huskers ultimately recovered. Wasn't Martinez's knee down prior to the fumble? It sure looked like it on the average tv I watched the live game. If I'm wrong, then okay. But if everyone else saw his knee was down, how does it not get over-turned (refs should've moved the ball back to that spot)? Had MSU recovered, it probably seals NU's fate, and I'm feeling like we got jobbed.

  6. Yes. I think a number of posters have hit on this recently, but we have talent on this team like you wouldn't believe. Size, speed, power, talent.

For some reason it continues to not be completely put together.

If it ever 'clicks', if that light bulb comes on...this team will be really, really hard to stop.

See, the bold verbiage is what I'm starting to question. I wonder if the team actually has championship talent, or if these "mental breakdowns" are the result of players being put in positions that they're not talented/physically gifted enough to handle.

I always think of Martinez in this context. Is he a actually a talented QB, or is he a physically gifted defensive back that is playing QB? (Thus, his mental mistakes are the result of his talents being miscast.)

I just have a hard time believing that the coaches are just "allowing" the mental mistakes to continue. I gotta think there's more to it than our coaches "not coaching".

  7. I do have to complement the refs for being consistent the whole game. Consistently bad. Let them play a little.

I think one of the biggest adjustments to the B1G has been to officiating.

100% agree. I guess the B1G isnt used to the forward pass. I don't remember complaining this much about PI in the Big12.

  8. Really what do fans want? Sound, disciplined football played consistently.

In theory, assuming top25 talent, this would keep NU from losing to teams they shouldn't, and keep them in games against equal-to-better competition.

I think we consistenly don't play this type of football mostly at QB and all Defense positions.

  9. So, for everyone saying we could get a better coach, lets hear some realistic names. Im not quite ready to give up on bo, but i am damn close. Im really curious, who else? Whos the hot coach? Who could restore us, realistically? I am still thinking we need stability to return to glory, maybe i am wrong. I am sick of getting embarrassed and the excuses.

I'll throw a few names out...

Chris Petersen? (Did not know about his kid's health situation)

Dave Doeren? (Lots of regional ties - KC, Wisconsin, Drake - he's a midwesterner)

    Dana Holgorsen?

    Gary Patterson?

    Pete Carrol? :)

Okay not happening. But if we want to keep up with the Ohio States and Alabamas, that would be one hire that would put us on pace to do it quickly.

If we're just gonna throw out names, I'd be really intriqued with Paul Rhodes.

  10. Not saying there aren't some valid points here, but all things considered, 38 points should be enough to win every game. This side of the ball is really not the source of this team's problems.

    4 turnovers, countless penalties, really?

Not saying there aren't limitations with Taylor at the helm. Its basically a two steps forward, one step back situation with him.

I'll repeat: 38 points should be enough to win every game.

  11. Bo Pelini=Kevin Cosgrove?

Okay, thats probably over the top. But against "good" teams, it's what Pelini's defenses are starting to resemble. I'm starting to become concerned about the direction of the program. Our D-minded coach is cranking out bad and worse defenses two seasons running. Somethings not right in Camelot.

  12. Even if Tom and Bo were told they'd have a certain level of participation/opinion with the AD hire, should they be THAT bent (so much so, that Sipple thought it was news worthy) if the role they thought they'd have was lessened?

I don't pretend to know the politics within the Dept, but this potential reacion seems a bit over-the-top to me.

  13. Couldn't have asked for more from Osborne. These last 5 years have flown by.

I am disappointed that there wasn't already a succession plan in place.

I'm not 100% comfortable with Perlman making a "national search". This is not a hire he can fail for a second time.

to be fair, wasn't TO instrumental in getting steve here?

You tell me. I don't recall that (however, theres a lot i cant recall these days).
