  1. Not saying it will happen, but I dont think this is as far fetched as I thought initially. I gotta beleive that if Gill isnt coming back to NU, in any capacity, its because Gill doesnt want to be back yet (for positive reasons).

If ESPN is correct, and Miles is able to land a DC like Jon Tenuta (name has been mentioned for HC jobs), I dont see why Gill and Pelini couldnt work together regardless of titles.

  2. "Finally, current Wake Forest Coach Jim Grobe could also be in the mix. A twin-jet Learjet 45 left Smith-Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 5:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and landed in Atlanta 53 minutes later."

    The plot thickens!

Maybe I'm missing something, but is the "Husker" jet the only one that could have left Winston and landed in Atlanta? Could be, but this seems like a large assumption considering the amount of jets in this country. ;)

  3. OK, you guys are going to be getting a new coach (again). So, how many years will you give the new guy to produce a national championship team before you want his head? FLAME Any number lower than 5 is unrealistic. WRONG What's the deal? How long will the new guy get?

  4. I sure was impressed with Houston Nutt last night. I like his style and his spirit. He obviously knows how to motivate his players too. I doubt he'd leave for NU, but you never know.

After watching him last night too, I now wish he had decided to come to NU instead of being stuck with Cally. At the time I thought it would've been a horrible hire, especially after the whole Mustain-gate thing. But I've gained a new respect for him. I think he could've done well here as long as he kept his nose clean.

  5. Intersting to get a picture on how this all went down. When Os got hired, I figured there was no way Cally could save his job unless he overhauled the D to give himself a fighting chance of winning out.

Random thoughts: I found it interesting that Cally, as the coach, felt the need to ask Os if he should fire assistants. Was he asking for Os's tutelage, his permission, or was he trying to put Os on the spot? I think this article also gives a clue as to why Cosgrove was so upset, as opposed to other losses, after the KU game. I wonder if at that moment, he felt mostly responsible for what was now an impending firing of everyone. Last, I find it interesting to reflect on how the KSU and CU weeks were coached considering they pretty much knew that they were losing their jobs.

...........Osborne took over as interim athletic director on Oct. 16. He said he told coaches upon his arrival he was hoping they could make this thing work.

“I think they understood that I didn’t want to make a change, because change is hard,” Osborne said. “Change is disruptive. Sometimes it’s expensive, but that’s not the main issue here.”

During his second week on the job, with four games left on Nebraska’s schedule, Osborne and the coaches set benchmarks for the season.

Osborne said that if they won the final four games and the team went 8-4, there’s no question they’d keep their jobs. If they won three and played well, he told them he thought they’d remain, but didn’t want to make promises.

    Anything worse than that?

“It’s going to be tough,” Osborne told them. “Because now you’re break even, and we haven’t had many break-even seasons around here. If you have a losing season, I don’t think this is going to work.”

Still, Osborne maintained Saturday that this was not just about wins and losses, but also about how those losses occurred.

He recalled a recent conversation he had with former Colorado coach Bill McCartney.

“He said, ‘You’ve lost your identity,’” Osborne said. “I think what he was saying was that we used to be a team that people hated to play because they felt it for two or three weeks.”

Not this year. Nebraska gave up more than 40 points six times and lost six games by more than two touchdowns.

The Huskers gave up almost 38 points a game and lost three home games by a combined 75 points.

“The Kansas game was a big turning point,” Osborne said of Nebraska’s 76-39 loss. “The coaches knew it, I knew it when it happened.”

The Huskers, for so long the bullies in the college football world, were now a punchline.

“The issue becomes, ‘How long are you still viable?’ At what point, can you still go out and recruit without people saying you’re only going to be there one or two years? At what point do you have credibility with the public? At what point do you still have a powerful impact with your players?” Osborne said.

“There comes a point where it becomes dicey, and I didn’t want to see Bill in that position. I didn’t want to see the University of Nebraska in that position.”

When Osborne was first hired, he said Callahan approached him wondering if Osborne wanted him to change assistants.

Osborne fired two assistant coaches in his 25 years as Nebraska’s coach.

“I said, ‘Bill, I would never do that.’ I would never ask you to get rid of anybody,’” Osborne said. “The head coach is the head coach. The head coach is not just responsible for the offense.

“The head coach is responsible for the defense, and the kicking game, and the whole deal. That’s why you’re the head coach. You’re responsible for firing those people. So I was not going to tell Bill Callahan who he had to keep, who he had to let go. Bill Callahan is where the buck stops.”...............

    Realistic expectations would be:

better conditioned athletes, leaner on both lines

    stronger athletes

    more physical play

    tremendously more intense, focused play

    gang tackling

improved fundamentals getting off blocks, better leverage with lineman, etc.

    smarter decision making from coaches

    coaches who play speed players

    better use of redshirts

no excuses made by coaches or players

no blame being attributed to anyone but those responsble

a never quit attitude from coaches and players

    no talking smack from players

    good graduation rates

excellent character from the players and coaches off the field

better connection with team history, ex-players

and whatever that translates to record-wise on the field. Everything listed above is in the control of the players and coaches. Expect them to do all of that and hope it translates to more W's than L's --- maybe appreciably more W's than L's. But remember that the B12 now is pretty good --- even with all the improvement listed above, 9 wins may not happen.

    :yeah

I dont think there'd be any question that improvement in those areas would dramtically affect the W/L record.

  7. Remember those wins will be with Coach Callahan's recruits. (if he is let go)

And will 9 wins be enough for the fans?

For 99% of Husker fans this would go without question under a new coach.

I think for the long haul, "we" should expect the minimum to be 10 wins with 12 regular season games, a shot at CCG, and a bowl game. Anything less, and "we" might as well not expect anything and just give a coach a 25 year contract so that he can retire at NU with no worry of job performance. I dont want to settle for mediocre. I have no faith that Cally could have consistently kept NU above mediocre. 9-4 isnt much of above mediocre in the grand scheme of things imo.

This is why Nebraska will become a revolving door for coaches!!

Diehard --- well done. You are absolutely correct. The NU fan expectation is absurd. Unrealistic expectations makes life very rough for coaches and players. Until the fan base gets realistic then yes, revolving doors is what we'll get. Though another 5 or 6 years of ca. .500 or so play and 1/2 the seasons without bowl games would fix those expectations the hard way.

I'd rather just take what we can get, hope for the best and cheer them on hoping for improvement and having realistic expectations.

So what should us Husker fans accept as realistic expectations? I'll never get the answer to my next question, but I wonder if someone like a Pete Carroll would ever sign on with an NU with a non-high bar being set. My Huskers have been a winner until this Cally debacle. As a fan, why should I be satisfied with less? I'd rather coach at a place that expects excellence and will give me everything I needed to reach those expectations than coach at a place where the fans are wishy-washy and will "take what we can get". I think thats the most defeated attitude I've ever heard from a Husker fan.:)

You think someone like a Pete Carroll would come here with a NON-HIGH BAR BEING SET? This NON-HIGH BAR being no more than two losses a year?!?!?!?

Actually my bar is set at 10 wins assumming 13/14 games/year. To answer your question, even though you didnt answer mine, is yes, I think someone like Carroll would want to come coach and be around winners. Not a fan base thats okay with mediocrity. I asked two questions in my post. Care to provide an answer to those?

  8. I think Cally ends up back in the pros as an O coordinator. Personally I'd prefer him as a QB coach who helps draw up plays. I wouldnt want him in any position of power (over the whole offense). I cant see anyone giving him a college head coaching gig anytime soon unless he's brought in strictly for his ability to keep players/program out of trouble (be a disciplinarian).

  9. Remember those wins will be with Coach Callahan's recruits. (if he is let go)

  10. When getting non-adults and some non-mature adults together in a relatively small place, there's going to be some seedy behavior. I wont even go to an NFL game because I cant put up with a bunch of loaded "adults" who seem to think that an NFL game is the same as a being in a WWE arena, or worse yet, in a WWE ring. I have heard a lot of bad stuff about CU fans versus what I've heard of NU fans. Part of the reason, that NU fans have the respect we do is because there really hasnt been much to be upset about prior to the Cally era. If the program continues to slide, we may not continue to earn the "classiest fans" mantra. But I would say that this mantra wasnt necessary gotten via the students, but by the overall fan base. Also, any ASU fan bashing a CU fan needs to look in the mirror. The worst I've ever been treated at a game was the '96 Disaster in the Desert. I've never been to Folsom, but I cant beleive that they're any less classy then the fans at ASU.

  11. Hey,

It's Klotz. I'm back in the house tonight after a long road trip to BFE in which I listened to the opinions of many Husker fans on Big Red Reaction and Becca. I usually listen to little that people say, as their opinion influences T.O. about as much as mine does. Anyhow, as I'm listening to all these varying opinions on what people think would be the best for the football program, a solitary truth resonated in my mind without ever being mentioned on the air: T.O.'s decision is bound to piss some fans off, no matter what.

    1. If Osborne decides to keep Cally and can some assistants, that will polarize Husker Nation similar to the Solich situation.

    2. If Osborne hires Gill, many people will complain that he will run the option and he's unproven.

    3. If Osborne hires Pelini, many people will complain that his attitude is shaky and he's unproven.

    4. If Osborne hires outside the program, many people will complain that whoever the hire is, won't respect Husker traditions.

Bottom Line: Osborne can't win in the short term. No matter what, prepare to be at least slightly disappointed tomorrow.

Real Fans will respect his decision and get behind this program. Fairweather Fred and the like can go ahead and burn their gear and rescind their season tickets. That way, my son and I can scoop them up and watch in the years ahead as we return to competitive respectability.

I dont think too many people were exactly thrilled with the hiring of Cally, but he was given a fair opportunity to keep those that really liked him and turn those that were on the fence. For the most part, he turned off the fence riders instead of bringing them in. Everyone wanted Cally to succeed. Nobody wanted NU to jump on the coaching carousel. Asumming Os hires a qualified candidate, I think everyone will give this person a fair shot. This is certainly not a "no win" situation. I think this is a great opportunity! :)

I can agree with your last paragraph except for your first sentence. Maybe you didnt mean it the way I'm taking it, but I'm getting tired of the sanctimony of some Husker fans calling into question the fan-hood of others like those damned ESPN commercials. I may not agree with other fans' opinions and may wonder whether some are mentally sound, but that doesnt mean they're not fans. Those who threaten lives, are not what I would consider a good example of how to support your program, but those people, like 'em or not, are still fans. With that being said, if I dont like the direction that TO takes the program, I will absolutely voice my displeasure. Whether I respect the decision or not won't come into play since its not like any decision will be reversed on my account unless there's enough people with cash and power that feel the same way I do. In no way would that make me less of a fan. It may just mean that someone like yourself doesnt like my particular brand of passion.
