I had kind of assumed that players like this were basically getting some kind of NIL cash flow. Would that be true of Gilbert, or no way to know?

Funny how Academics used to be a major quality when it came to finding the right fit for moving on a team to join your league.  Now TV exposure holds even more weight than athletic success.  Cal, Stanford Oregon State and Wazzu about to be in the ACC, what strange times.

I just posted in the ND thread that I dont understand the love for Stanford/Cal joining the B1G because it IS an athletic conference first (currently, driven by football), a TV consortium fast approaching #1, and far down the list a partnership of like-minded academics.

I forgot the name of the person I was listening to on radio this morning, but she was explaining how sports (again mainly football) money/exposure has driven enrollment at Bama resulting in increased academic prestige, and a boon for Tuscaloosa in general (going from sleepy college town to legitimate city). For me, this sounds very plausible to why universities, ones not traditionally compared to an Ivy League school, are driven to increase their sports profiles.

  3. I get the ND love.

Yet since conference realignment is really about television money (i.e. football), why the love for Stanford (and Cal)? IF ND said "we're in" IF you bring along Stanford, then fine. Two big Ifs there, and other than that I don't see the financial draw. This isn't about not-football/sports endowments.

Last year - in the midst of the worst stretch of football in Lincoln in 60+ years - we were the #16 team IN THE COUNTRY in average viewership.  I case anyone can't tell, it's all about TV money.  And we are ranked higher out of EVERYONE than the number of teams that will be in IN OUR CONFERENCE next year.

We were #4 in the B1G last year.  #4!!!!!!!  Even with the addition of Oregon and USC (both slightly ahead of us), we'll still be #6 in the conference.

We aren't getting kicked out.  And our record will only get better.

This is crazy.  Can it be the season already?

I love to see this. And with a return to winning and possibly completing for championship, this ranking likely improves.

However, if there isnt a return to winning (and probably at a high level at some point), I can easily see where these numbers start slipping, and slipping rapidly, when those of us currently 40+ are the only ones who actually remember the glory years. At worst, that puts the program at Indiana/Northwestern level, and at best maybe where Minnesota is right now. We're not on this reality's doorstep, but without a return to winning, maybe 10-20 years from now?

I haven't lived in Nebraska for decades now, but even the alumni association in Phoenix has seen reduction in numbers. And for those of us that actually show for some of the association events, at 50, I'm one of the youths that makes up this group. And in general outings, I see fewer people wearing Husker gear out here and CA than I did a decade ago.

I don't think it would ever to go 11 conference games (unless there are more total games) because teams still need the home-game revenue.  I doubt it would go to 10 either (for the same reason) but it's possible.

With 10 or 11, teams would still get at least 6 home games, and many years 7. Gate receipts should start to take a back seat to all the t.v. money. And no real incentive to schedule home-home series with tough out of conference opponents.

Seems like the pod system - despite seemingly making a lot of sense - isn't going to catch on anywhere.

But it would work out well for a 20-team conference.  Play your pod (five teams, four games) every year and one of the other pods each year (five games).  I would have the winner of those pairings play in the CCG but that probably wouldn't happen either.

    With Clemson & Florida State:

Eastern - Penn State, Florida State, Clemson, Maryland, Rutgers

Central - Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana

Northern - Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern

Western - Nebraska, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington

Who knows? Maybe it does play out that way in the future. But I think the current concern is it feels less like a conference when segmenting programs. With an increase to 10 or maybe 11 game conference schedule, a program can see all its conference mates a couple of times over a 4 year window.

I'm not really interested in Clemson.

I didn't want to be the first to state that.

I'd prefer the conference gets Virginia & North Carolina (to cut off the best bets for SEC expansion north), one of FSU/Miami (just to get into FL), and of course ND (for the brand).

Really had no interest in Oregon & Washington. I enjoyed Nebraska's short-lived stint as the closest program to USC/UCLA. Thought it would've helped with high level CA recruits.

We have seen with Rutgers and Maryland, you don't have to have dominating programs to be included.  You have to be in a large population area.  I would say the teams being mentioned fall into that category.

That was add a time when it was all about making money off the amount of cable subscriptions in the area (NY, MD). The financials are now moving towards brand/viewership.

Does UO/UW bring enough eyeballs for FOX to want to keep all current B1G teams whole if they're added? Maybe. Have to see what FOX does if the PAC12 implodes.

Stanford/Cal, as some have mentioned, is a hard No.

If the Pac 12 is imploding, now is the time.  You can't wait 5 years down the road when they are now newly established in a new conference.

Do these sports add to the financial pie? Best guess is "no".

Different story if ND wants one of these teams as a condition for joining.

TT CB from Fong. If you wanna know why we have offered all these safety prospects it’s because they are all going to Tech. We are down the list.

Sad state of affairs for sure. Don't think fans over 40 thought we'd ever see the day that not only was the main competition Texas Tech, but we also aren't winning the battles.

Not a referencum on Rhule, just a sobering reminder on how far the program has fallen.

Just make four super conferences with 16 teams each (North, South, East, and West). Each conference has four divisions with four teams in it. Winners of each division are seeded 1-4 based on head to head and other tie breakers, they play through a mini-playoff to determine the conference winner. The four conference winners are then seeded again for the national semifinal and final game. Seems easy enough to me. :)

If you can get those 64 teams to all agree on a revenue distribution model

    Maybe from your perspective.

stripper will bang you = high paid high school QB performs at $M level.

While I get what you're trying to convey, and while humorous, the comparison isn't really apt.

The stripper in your analogy wants to take the John for everything he has then leave him high and dry.

Regardless of where Raiola commits, I doubt that's his plan; and NIL isn't set up in a way that a recruit would collect and still be able to leave the program high and dry.

I read some of these comments and I'm reminded of that guy who empties his bank account to pay the stripper because she's "in love with me".

Except in your analogy, the stripper would willingly enter the relationship if stripper wants to actually get paid / keep the money.

Really hard in this day and age to have 2 true starter level QBs on the roster so I’m not all that surprised. My biggest concern is if this makes the offensive design a little more protective of Sims like we saw with Martinez at times. Gotta still make use of all Sims strengths (I’m sure we will).

I wonder if the offense strategy, more designed QB runs, is why he's leaving. Thought he'd be willing to compete for the job this fall.
