  1. JT - check out the pics of Bobby Reynolds and Fran Nagel in HuskerTape's link. Reynolds played from 50-52 and Nagel was there at the same time, maybe a year earlier or so. Judging by the image names, the pics of these guys were from 1950.

The old-school uniforms were kind of cool. Thankfully, the mascot has been updated since 1959:

(new Herbie and Lil Red are both preferable to this heh)

The origin of the foam corn hat!!

  2. I couldn't stand Callahan's news conferences because he never said anything. It was the same thing everything time and it bugged the @#$% out of me.

Bo came across as a real person today and I thought he hit a homerun when he talked about Solich.

Wonder if Callahan was watching the show.

That was a welcomed surprise. I'm sure Osborne appreciated his words too.

  3. secretasianman.....my response to your question wasn't directed to "you" in general.....I know that a few statements in the post were "strong" and opinionated...just wanted you to know that I wasn't directing them toward you....just in general....hope you didn't take it as if I was "attacking" your question or opinions.

I didn't feel that you were attacking my comments. I felt that you made some great points. I was unsure of why so many support Watson, and you brought up some good points.

  4. By all accounts I've heard Watson is a good guy. By all accounts I've heard Watson is a good coordinator. By all accounts I've heard the players really respond well to Watson and like what he's about.

Where is the evidence against him? I haven't heard any, so if there is some, please share.

I haven't heard any evidence against him. I just hadn't heard alot of evidence in support of him.

My question came up because I didn't know how much influence he had on Callahan's offense, and the Colorado offense that he ran wasn't stellar.

  5. Ar Husker fan....... please don't send me on a scavenger hunt... I am not being "sarcastic", but I really would like to know what Bo has done too instill such a deep hatred...... Bo is not my first choice either, but I can't wait for next season.....

Please shed some light, without making me sort through 1000000000 Bo posts-links....

    Exactly.

I saw that he made a few posts about how the program would suffer through NCAA recruiting infractions with Pelini at the helm. The overall discipline of the team would suffer and we'd have numerous "run-ins" with the law by players.

He didn't point to any evidence to support that... but those were some of the statements he posted.

  6. Why is everybody so sold on Watson? It is unknown exactly how much influence Watson had on the offense. Callahan called the plays; other than 1 half against Texas A&M. We don't know how much influence Watson had on play selection, or how much of the gameplan was his influence. Yes, he was on the field for the final games-- but again, we don't know what influence that had.

With all of those unknowns-- where is the evidence that he is the man for offensive coordinator?

  7. I didn't vote because I am neither hot or cold on the guy.

I am reserving any judgement until I see what kind of product he produces.

If you have watched many LSU games they have WAY more speed on "D" then anything we have so I think he will definitely need some time to put together more speed on "D"

I think with a good staff he will be able to recruit and I believe he will develop and motivate the troops.

I honestly think will be alright, and a consistent 8+ win team.

I am with you but I also think that we have speed available. It will be interesting to see what he does with Culbert. Thernarse, Akumura if he becomes HC.

culbert to linebacker, thernarse to starting safty, akumura...not sure but that's what i'd think would be done, didn't Akumura have a couple of big hits in fall practice?

Don't forget Blue at CB. He showed flashes of promise. Yes even being coached by Elmo! :)

he wasn't in the exercise;) i can't wait to yell(in my best frank the tank voice) YOU'RE MY BOY BLUE!!!

hahaha... now I know that I wasn't the only one who thought of that when I saw Blue's name on a jersey for the first time!

  8. Iowa fans don't seem to demand too much out of their high paid coach. Ferentz's teams have always seemed just mediocre. They have quality wins here and there, but then there's always the surprise loss to ISU, or Purdue or some other unexpected team.

I don't envision Michigan fans really being happy that Ferentz's name is being mentioned.

  9. There have been numerous "rumors" and "sources close to the situation" threads. Some people have been offended by them, some have found them amusing.

These 5 stand out in my mind as the most ridiculous. The ones that had me laughing out loud was the T-shirt one, and the gyno records.

Which ones did you find the most entertaining?

  10. When Solich was fired, the fanbase seemed divided on whether or not it should have happened.

Now that most signs point to Pelini being our next coach, I was wondering if we're divided on this too.

as the only nay vote, i believe that bo will set us back annother 10 years to be a power again. i'd rather castrate myself then have him as a head coach.

Wow. What would you have done if Callahan was retained?

  11. I think the talent is there. If we get a good staff here, I envision a " John Blake-to-Bob Stoops transition at Oklahoma" type of turnaround. Since the talent was there, and Stoops had a good staff-- they were able to become contenders quickly.

I agree that Ganz would be multi-dimensional, and that we're loaded at RB. Thenarse, Blue, and Culbert are three guys that I'm looking forward to seeing emerge. Also, I wonder which WR will standout like Purify did.

  12. OK-- there are some narrow minded people here that think "Gee, if a guy thinks Callahan should have been given more time, then he must also think that Callahan is the best coach of all time!!"

Most people presented the idea that Callahan needed to go. I simply presented an OPINION, that it's not the only idea that should be considered.

Why is that so hard for some people to understand?

Bottom line, Callahan didn't meet Osborne's benchmarks--- so why are you beating a dead horse knapp?

  13. Because intelligent football people know that Bill Callahan is not head coach material and especially not at the college level.

Right. But "intelligent football people" aren't who the question was directed at. It was directed at all the people on this board who kept saying we needed to keep BC on board for another year or two.

They seem to have gone away. Or they have changed their tunes, and are hiding.

Unfortunately, some people only know the one tune. Look a couple of posts above yours. :)

You're not really able to look at a situation from multiple angles, are you?

  14. With all of the openings out there for HC, I'd be interested in knowing why the "Callahan should have more time" people think he's not even being mentioned in talks for these programs.

If he was such a good coach that WE should keep him, doesn't it stand to reason that his name would be mentioned in some other search as even a minor candidate?

Just goes to show you that people can be a fan without knowing football. There's nothing wrong with that, unless people let their opinion and their mouth get in front of their better judgment.

Just because some people supported Callahan with a new defensive staff, does not mean that they don't know anything about football. That is an extremely arrogant and condescending statement. If you are such an educated football mind, then why aren't you being paid the big bucks coaching somewhere?

I didn't support Callahan because I felt that he was the best coach out there. I supported him because I felt that if he hired a new "Pelini-style" D-coordinator, things could have been very different. I supported him because I felt that he didn't have enough time. Prior to this season, there was NO evidence that a defensive meltdown was imminent. In fact, the defense was looking tougher closing out last season by limiting Colorado, Oklahoma and Auburn. Some say he should have fired Cosgrove earlier-- but I challenge you by saying that there was no evidence prior to this season that a defensive change was needed, and secondly, he can't be expected to fire Cosgrove during the season.

I felt that keeping Callahan would be a lesser risk than hiring the unproven names that have been mentioned.

Giving Callahan 1 or 2 more seasons with a new DC would be an equal risk to a totally new staff. I think that if the staff had met Osborne's benchmarks, Callahan would have fired Cosgrove anyways.

Ultimately, the fact is that Callahan could not meet Osborne's benchmarks and there is no argument to that. I support Osborne's decision, however I also feel that Callahan could have turned it around.

Why isn't he being mentioned for any jobs?? Easy. His 27-22 record. Is he the best coach out there? No-- he was a first time college head coach who had to learn on the job. He learned in his 4th season that he needs a better defense and that a mobile qb makes his offense better. He learned that he has the offensive weapons in place, and it's time to go and recruit a championship defense. He learned that Nebraska isn't patient.

How much time are you willing to give Pelini?
