At the request of coach Mike Riley, Boyd Epley Nebraska's author of "Husker Power" and now associate athletic director for strength and conditioning will have an expanded role with the NU football program focused on injury prevention.

Riley confirmed Thursday that he'd reached out in recent weeks to Epley who was Nebraska's head strength coach for 35 years to come up with some ideas on injury prevention, specifically the groin and hamstring issues that have dogged Husker wide receivers, defensive backs and linebackers over the last calendar year. Riley said his teams have long struggled with those injuries at the beginning of any training period whether it be spring or fall camp and he'd like Epley's input.

Also some extremely interesting comments from Epley regarding athleticism on the football team that I hadn't seen before.

Comments had come up before. I'm not overly surprised that some players would be off in their testing a week after the regular season, especially among the linemen. I was surprised at the time that epley called them out publicly. Felt a bit agenda driven at the time, and still does.

Oooh that sneaky Boyd Eppley....he's always got that hidden agenda to transform athletes into top tier physical specimens...that bastard.

One of the comments that really stuck out to me was that the volleyball team was more athletic than the football team. That comment makes sense considering that they won the national championship last year.

Seriously, as someone else said, loosen up your tin foil hat.

Epley just speaking the truth and some can't handle it.

I figured having other coaches on the defensive staff with coordinator experience would be very beneficial in helping our guys get comfy in the new scheme and overcoming any hiccups like we are seeing. Who else in the country has 3 guys on one side of the ball that has been a coordinator at a D1 program? Has to help right?..... Right?!

Maybe it will. But not immediately. And not without a legit pass rush and a revolving door day to day at linebacker.

They are in a tough situation missing Bando, Rose-Ivey, Valentine, and Gangwish all at the same time. Plus losing Newby during the game yesterday. All that talent being gone makes generating a pass rush that much harder. I'm hoping they can put their heads together and come up with something to relieve the pressure on our corners with more zone or something.

  4. I wonder how Gregory is doing in the weightroom this offseason? Dude got skinny during the season last fall. He needs to put on about 20 lbs of muscle. And not lose any speed.

I am curious to see how he looks in the fall. I completely agree that he needs to put on weight, there were times last season that he got pushed around a little. But speed is his biggest weapon, do whatever just keep the speed.

Hope he turns in a Suh like 2014 campaign and really drives home the point Nebraska can develop top defensive players, help us land some game changers moving forward.

I never understood how Suh's success didn't immediately result in some high profile recruiting on the defensive line. With Gregory's success, I think we may finally get some kids attention.

Although, the guys we have on this defensive line right now aren't too shabby IMO. Pretty damn talented really. Maybe we just keep building on this.

We need to put studs in the draft year after year. Suh was awesome but we didn't follow him up with anyone. Hell, Purdue has a great player every once in awhile. But it's the schools that do it year in and year out that will get the top recruits. If Gregory has the year we all hope he does and the other young players on the d-line keep progressing and get drafted in rounds 1 or 2 we will start to get the reputation we need to pull some bigger fish in here. We are setting ourselves up to do the same thing at RB too I believe.

  6. What does Mike Brown do nowadays? I always thought he was just as intellectual a player as he was a gifted athlete. A long successful career proves as much. I know I'm a guy that doesn't really like the idea of Nebraska hiring first time coaches too much, but a DB coach, as I've said before, not sure he changes a lot about the overall performance here. Bo's running the show out there IMO. Still, a smart guy who has vast knowledge and experience at defensive back in both college and the NFL could surely bring something to the table.

Someone mentioned Mike Brown in another thread, saying the same thing. I agree with your impression and the poster who first brought his name into the mix. I think he said that Brown was coaching somewhere.

This would be a great hire. Mike Brown played in practically the same scheme when he was with the Bears that we play here. I have no doubt Mike could coach DBs. But his recruiting may take time to develop, maybe not.

  7. How I love to watch Iowa fans puff out their little chests before this game. It's like watching the little brother get mad at the big brother before he gets laughed at, the underwear pulled over his head, and locked in a closet for a few hours. Except in Iowa's case it's for a whole year.
