  1. and what is this crap with Beck, asking TM if certain plays are OK with him? obviously the kid will say no if he thinks he can't execute the play Beck has in mind......are you kidding me? ."Oh, TM, say, would this play be alright to call in this situation?".........Beck will never coach up a skilled QB, if he doesn't challenge the kid to develop and learn more....this philosophy makes no sense to me.

So you want our offensive coordinator to throw the kid out there with a play he is clearly not comfortable with? I highly doubt the language is "Oh, TM, say, would this play be alright to call in this situation?", because if that is the case, then Taylor might as well be the offensive coordinator. Beck just wants to make sure he knows the reads, which is perfectly fine with me...is it not for you?

  2. Charlie Mcbride was recruiting Barry Sanders very hard and Sanders was going to commit and sign his LOI to Nebraska. However, Johnny Rodgers son committed and McBride turned down Sanders.

Johnny's son never saw the field and Sanders won the Heisman trophy.

If true, what a travesty..................Sanders was undoubtedly the most exciting runner I have ever seen.............

In fact even though Okie lite had Thurman Thomas ahead of him, I still marveled at Pat Jones keeping Barry off the field for so long.......

I second that, that would be the biggest blown call in college recruiting, much like in the NFL Green bay recruiting Brian Bosworth instead of Sanders. I have never seen anything like Sanders in my life, but hope to see it again.

What about LaMichael James? Weren't we in his top two or something?

  3. That's really what your coming back with? What's he going to say? I'm not ready. Like I said before my sources tell me Taylor is WAY ahead of Brion. Does Taylor have room to improve? Yes! I'm willing to see what happens next year with his development before I throw him under the bus.

This is the alarming point to me. IIRC, this is year 3 for Carnes and year 4 for Martinez. If the gap is that wide, it is one of two things. Carnes does not have the mental capacity to grasp the system OR we do not have the ability to get players better than when they arrive.

If it is the first, it goes with the comments of those who believe this staff has issues with recruiting ie missing talent/not good judges etc..... Not good.

If it is number 2, it goes right into the theme from some (myself included) that the staff has issues developing talent.

Neither one is good. It goes back to what seems to be this teams (staffs) mentality of playing not to lose instead of playing to win. They lack that killer attitude IMO. Same with the way they play Martinez this year. Safe plays, limit his exposure as it appears they have no faith in the back-ups. Again goes to lack of development or recruiting misses. IIRC, Bo or Beck mentioned during the season that if Martinez went down, Rex would be their guy.

I'm about to rant here, you've all been warned...

I agree with a lot of what you're saying (especially the part about talent development), but the part about safe plays and limiting his exposure bothers me, and it's not just directed at you.

The Martinez haters now complains that we "limit" Martinez too much, and play not to lose, but isn't that what said complainers wanted? Before, Taylor was feast or famine, big play or turnover, and a lot of people justifiably criticized him for it. Now, Taylor has become a game manager, and people want the big play ability back. It just doesn't work like that. We want the big plays minus the mistakes, and unless your quarterback's name is Andrew Luck, that's not just going to happen as a redshirt sophomore.

Now, if there is a better option out there, i'm all for it. There are deficiencies in Martinez's game, and if we have somebody more capable on the roster, he needs to play. I highly doubt this is true, because there is no reason for the staff to keep him on the bench if a better option exists. That being said, teams have won National Championship's with a lot less at quarterback, so if they can do it, so can we. Honestly, I'm more concerned with the defense as a whole that any single unit on the offense, and if I had to pick the offense's weakest position, it's far and away the offensive line, in my opinion. The quarterback is far from the most glaring issue.

Something else that bothers me are the people saying that he is not a "dual threat" quarterback. He may not be busting off 15 yard scrambles, but to say his feet are not a threat is ridiculous. He may not show his speed on every play, but defenses take his speed into account when they gameplan, and they take it into account with their playcalling. Martinez's running ability may open up some lanes for Rex, or loosen up the coverage downfield because he is a threat to run. There's no way to know what the specific effect is unless you're in the opponents defensive gamplanning session, but it definitely has an effect, and that counts for something. Just because he's not juking people in the pocket every play doesn't mean that his running doesn't have a positive effect on the offense.

I know that the quarterback is the easiest position to criticize, but I see much bigger problems, that need addressed more readily than the quarterback. And honestly, this is purely opinion, I think that the inverted veer option out of the gun suits him much better than the option that we're running now. It seems to me that he makes better read from the shotgun, and doesn't have to juke and jive as much as he does out of the I, he can get straight down the field fast, which we all know is his strength.

This is just what I see when I watch the games and read the boards, so take it for what it's worth. I didn't mean to criticize anyone, just to point out some stuff that I believe is frustrating or false. Take it for what it's worth.

  4. Good lord some of you people are delusional. I gave up on giving you the facts. Clearly you don't watch the games and see there is some real problems with the flow of this offense. Footwork, pocket presence, timing, and throwing motion apparently don't mean sh#t to most of you. Then the guy is supposed to be able to run for days until uh oh? Every defense we play has figured out that that's all he can do and now what happens from here on out? Do you Taylor supporters ever watch any other football teams? There are other programs around the country that have 2nd and 3rd string QB's that blow the doors off of Taylor.....do you not watch any other football than Nebraska? Have you watched option football for so long that you forgot what passing game is supposed to look like?

If you support Taylor just because he is the current QB, I get that, but don't pretend for a second that Brion Carnes doesn't blow his doors off in every single category except the fact that Brion has no experience in real games. These coaches obviously don't want to give Brion a real shot at taking this f'ing' job....you know why? Cuz' Bo has such a hard on for Taylor it's not even funny. He defends the kid every time someone even mentions his name. If Brion was given a chance, you would see what a dual threat QB is really supposed to look like and you will all forget TM even existed.

I just ask one question of you Martinez supporters since you are clearly lost in a world where fundamental quarterback skills don't matter........when someone finally replaces Martinez and shows you what this offense is truly capable of will you have the balls to admit you were blind to see that the team is lacking a true leader, a vocal leader and a QB that can execute the offense?

Since you seem to know so much about quarterback play, maybe Bo should hire you? Do you have any facts to support that Brion is superior, or are you just taking cheap shots at Martinez for the heck of it? It's very frustrating to me that personal feelings and preferences take precedent over level of play or statistics...

  5. Let me make this easy for all of you. Did any of you watch this season? Okay, now remember this season. Now multiply that season times the next 2 seasons and WHAMMO! You now know what to expect for the next two years at Nebraska. Atleast the next two years. We'll see after that. As long as Bo continues to hire all his high school buddies for assistants, and Taylor Martinez is under center.........9 wins is what you get. Ohio State will beat us in their house. Michigan will take us behind the woodshed again. Wisconsin will still have a hell of a team and then you can expect to lose to somebody that you never dreamed we would lose to because this team clearly doesn't have the motivation or focus it takes to beat those sad ass teams into the dirt.

Expectations folks. They've got to change. Nebraska it not "The Nebraska" anymore. Colin Cowherd says it best. The days of these small town midwestern teams dominating is over. The fact that a University in Lincoln Nebraska was among the most dominant programs ever is absolutely miraculous. You can't lose that momentum once you get it. The last ten years of Nebraska football has driven this program too far into the realms of mediocrity. It's so so hard to climb back out when your competing against the SEC, U of Southern Cal, and traditional powers like Ohio State and Michigan. Then you look at all the teams that are rebuilding with new coaches and they are all flying right past us.

9 wins folks. 9. Get comfortable with that number. It's a good year. Nebraska will have good 9 win seasons.

On a side note. Carl Nicks doesn't even claim Nebraska on his gametime introduction. He says the name of the Junior College he went to. Talk about a slap in the face.

I can't wait until Bo proves all of the people like you wrong, and you guys come crawling back, talking about how great the team is. Haters gonna Hate.

  6. A) Do you have a little buzzer on your phone that warns you when someone talks smack against Wisky? A Huskerboard notification APP?

    B) Yes, yes we will beat that ass.

Edit. My 500th post was talking smack about wisconsin....love it. Ever since my trip to Madison i vowed to hate the Badgers for life.

He should change his signature to:

    "Back to Back B1G Champion.

Back to Back Rose Bowl Loser."

International Hater's Ball around here...that's fine. Keep it coming and On Wisconsin!

"I'd like to thank the Lord Almighty for giving everyone else so much, and me so little!"

I hope somebody gets that reference...

  7. I don't know where this idea that we abandoned the option came from. We may have used it less in some games than in others, but we used it throughout the season, and we used it pretty effectively against South Carolina in the bowl game.

As far as Taylor's passing improvement goes, I look at "pre-Wisconsin" and "post-Wisconsin." It's about cutting down on mistakes, but it's also about taking what's there and not trying to force plays. You may think that's a small thing, but that's the difference between a win and a loss against Ohio State.

Furthermore, I just don't think that the QB is the only reason we have troubles in our passing game. Right now, I think our passing game would benefit more from having Alshon Jeffery than it would from having Andrew Luck.

As far as consistency, I don't really know what else to say, zoogies. This offense was far more consistent than the 2009 and 2010 units, including QB play, against much stronger defenses. There were no absolutely pathetic performances like we saw against Iowa State or Texas in 2009, or Texas A&M and Washington in 2010, and the offense actually carried the defense (as opposed to the other way around) in wins against Washington and Fresno State. We were capable of moving the ball on everyone, including teams with top 5 defenses like Michigan State and South Carolina, and we weren't relying on the big play. That's a good step forward for the entire offense, QB included.

    THIS

  8. This whole staff based on nepotism is glaring.

You've got a point about discipline (or lack thereof, but let's be real - most coaches hire guys they know. Hiring position coaches and coordinators who are total strangers is very rare. The nepotism angle is a miss.

They are known for the experience and abilities or know to BO from Youngstown? If guys are picked based on experience and credentials, I have no issues, but to go from a RB coach (who developed no one) to OC, IMHO is a miss. Our D line looked great with SUH and then what. Look at the four year in ability to stop a mobile QB and now this guy is our DC again, IMHO another miss.

I have no issue promoting guys you know, BUT they really need to be qualified for the position.

Beck held "passing game Coordinator" at KU, so to paint him as a bumbling guy with no experience is unfair.

    ...

At the beginning of the season, this record and these were the results were what a good majority of us were expecting, but now that they have happened, there's a total meltdown

My only thoughts on the subject

  9. The fact is: he has absolutely NO experience coordinating an offense, and has only been a position coach. And if i'm correct, he coaches the WR's, which traditionally isn't an incredibly intricate position to learn. I have no idea the inner workings, so that may not be the case, but QB and OL coaches usually are the most involved position coaches. I could see this being a plausible scenario if he went to OC at a smaller school to get some experience, but as of right now, I don't believe he would be ready...

  10. I think this well said, but I also believe the OP stated what in fact many people think but just don't voice. We absolutely don't know what goes on behind closed doors and at practice, but what we do know is that our #2 quarterback has NO meaningful snaps of any kind. To me, that is a very large potential problem.

3 blowouts all year, and Carnes played in all 3. Do risk losing a game to develop one player?

Exactly. And not 1 of those 3 would've been considered "put in the backups" secure by Tom Osborne. Possibly UT Chat but definitely not the others. But the same people would complain about not putting the game away as are complaining about no experience for backups. Crying about Carnes not getting reps is code for "I don't like Taylor much"

So you know what I mean moreso than I do? I think I've been one of the more vocal ones on here who has changed my opinion of TM, I think he has improved tremendously, and I've said that numerous times. So that blows your "I don't like Taylor much" idea right out of the water.

And there were also two blowouts that we were on the other end of that were golden opportunities. And some of the shots TM took on the last series of the Michigan game were the type that could have had you calling to the sidelines for #2. And the Iowa game was not as close as that score indicated, yes if they score once more and then they recover a onside kick....yada, yada, yada. They scored one late TD with the help of numerous questionble calls, that game was not in doubt in the fourth quarter. I've never complained about not putting a game away.

But it doesn't matter what I think, Taylor will most likely continue to take every snap, and if something does happen to him we'll send in a QB who has zero experience.

(This doesn't apply to you in particular, but to many of these Carnes backers) Saying a few nice things about a kid doesn't change the underlying negativity that riddle most of the posts about him. Saying he's improved on one hand, then begging for the other guy to be in on the other is contradicting yourself, imo.

  11. He is a freaking Sophomore. I don't care who you are 99% of all sophomores are still developing. Look at all of the other "greatest qb in college history".

was going to call you out on the Tim Tebow thing - since he won the Heisman as a sophomore...but looks like you edited.

The sophomore thing gets old by the way...he's still developing but there are plenty of young QBs that are very successfull in CFB. See k-state 2011.

Klein is a redshirt junior, so he has a year on TM, and I honestly think that Taylor is a better passer at this point than Klein. Klein's 6'5", which helps him in the redzone. That's the only difference between the two

  12. 10-3...would be tied for the best winning percentage over the last 9 years...I'll take that in a heart beat with our lack of experience. Look at next year...We are only losing 2 starters on offense...caputo and hardrick...and we have playmakers across the board. We lose arguably 4 out of our 5 best defensive players in Crick, Dennard, Lavonte, and Cassidy (the other one is Thorell). But look for us to have a break out year next year. Obviously we all wanted to win the Big 10, but top to bottom this conference is much better than the Big 12. We simply were not there this season.

We also lose Kinnie and Legate. Defensively we lose quite a bit of talent, but thankfully due to the injuries we had, we have quite a bit of experience coming back next season. Realizing how tough this schedule was during the summer, most folks probably would not have picked us winning 10 games this year.

Losing Kinnie is not huge if you ask me

  13. New opponents, new trends to understand, new officiating to get used to, new venues to get used to, new hotels, new conference guidelines.... there are about a zillion things we have to adjust to, not just "eleven new teams." Failing to take the whole into account is why people think switching conferences isn't a big deal. It is a big deal. You just don't deal with the details in your armchair.

    Blocking. Tackling. Hotel familiarity.

I'm telling you. It has an effect. You don't have to believe me.

Well I wouldn't argue with because you clearly know best.

And after all, how would you expect our offensive line to out-muscle anyone when they've never stayed at a Hampton Inn before?

It's not just the hotels. It's traveling to a new city, on new routes, on a new itinerary. Not only that, but you have to get used to the other team's coaching philosophy, and also the style of play. Defensive Lines are smaller and quicker in the Big XII, so you need more athletic line play. It's the opposite in the B1G.

The new conference hasn't lost us any game, but is definitely a factor in our struggles

  14. Checking in @ #16 in the BCS. One behind Michigan State, one in front of Wisconsin and two in front of Michigan.

This makes no sense to me. I know the BCS is run by the computers and such, but being one spot behind a team that has the same record as us, that we also beat face to face is a little ridiculous to me

  15. HuskerBCS just further demonstrates to me that people here use their personal bias in evaluating players. Just because you don't LIKE Taylor Martinez doesn't mean he's not a good QB, and that he can't deliver a chamionship

  16. Its hard to change something you've done for a long time.

    ...but not impossible...

It was hard for me to run a mouse lefthanded when I got carpal tunnel (I'm an IT guy), but I decided I need to do so to avoid surgery. I did.

It's also hard to learn how to drive a stick shift, lose weight, put the toilet seat down when you get married, quit smoking, learn to take your hat off in the house, and <YOUR EXAMPLE HERE>. The difference between adequate and excellent is if and when you are satisfied in not improving the status quo. I guess Martinez and the coaching staff are at that point with his throwing motion.

I think instead of working on making something look prettier, the coaching staff should spend their time teaching Taylor more valuable things, like making correct reads. Every QB has passes tipped, it happens.

  17. I for one didn't want to strangle the announcers today, so that's a plus. I appreciated the fact that Urban Meyer didn't completely dumb down the terminology, it was quite interesting to hear a guy who knew what he was talking about.

  18. larry johnson didn't throw up the diamond cutter or whatever, he threw up the roc.

    jay-z_the_roc.jpg

Larry definitely used the diamond cutter. thats pretty obvious by the fact that DDP sued him for using it as it is a registered trademark.

Didn't LJ do it because when you make the sign your fingers form and L and a J? I may be wrong, but that's what I always thought
