  1. I think the only way it gets revived on an annual basis is for NU to go independant and then schedule OU every year. Either that, or OU and NU would have to schedule one another as a nonconference game at the beginning of the year. The problem with that would be playing twice a year every other year.

Only for the 2 years when they are not on our rotation. NC home, NC away, C home, C away. And schedule it Thanksgiving weekend every year. NC or C

  2. If you think anything has been taken away from the Red River Shootout, think again! I have the misfortune of living in Texas. The entire week leading up the UT/Sooner game is nothing but hatred towards OU. Just because the game is scheduled earlier in the season, it has nothing to do with the hype of this game.

Happened to be in Dallas once during OU/TX weekend at a popular bar. A pickup with a wench and TX plates circled around the block, backed up to a car close to the door w/ OU plates, drug it out into the street and took its parking place. It didn't take too long for a tow truck to come by and haul the OU car away for double parking.

    Thats a rivalry

  3. It's a good thing that you are not seeking affirmation- I don't think you'll get it.

In order to be a rivalry, it has to be a a back and forth battle between the two teams every year and fans on both sides really have to care. Nebraska fans don't care about Colorado and the series is 46-17-2 in Nebraska's favor. Even if you want to selectively choose the most modern Big XII era, we still lead the series 8-4. It's just not even.

Missouri is not even enough either- the series is 63-34-3 and they haven't won in Lincoln since the 60's. Missouri and Colorado have both enjoyed some recent success, but they aren't iconic marquee programs and their success will continue to wax and wane. Nebraska's fan base has gone crazy over the first two losing seasons in almost 50 years. Missouri and Colorado have had so many losing seasons that it doesn't generate buzz when they go 5-7. Nebraska (and Oklahoma) will always be at the top or near the top of the college football world. Missouri and Colorado will not.

The fact of the matter is, Nebraska is one of only a handful of marquee college football programs. Colorado and Missouri are not in that club and Oklahoma is. The series between OU and NU is almost even (37-43-3) and fans on both sides desperately want it back. Who could not be outraged by the elimination of that game? It was in the top 3, if not the top, rivalry in the history of college football. The rivalry has no replacement but itself.

First - I agree OU/NU should play every year. Now that we have 4 non-cons I think we should schedule them in the 2 years we don't play them in conference and bump CU's time slot and every year play them Thanksgiving week EVERY YEAR.

    Good point on the competitiveness

Did some research on the top 4 IMO rivalries with national appeal (sorry Yale-Harvard)

    Alabama 37 Auburn 28 (1 T) 1.32 ratio

    Meeechigan 57 THE Ohio State 41 (6 T) 1.39 ratio

    USC 42 UCLA 28 (7 T) 1.5 ratio

    Texass 54 OU 40 (5 T) 1.35 ratio

NU/MU has a 1.85 ratio. I thought Bama-Auburn would be more lopsided. USC-UCLA makes sense geographically since they are in the same slum.

BTW a good website for research Link

  4. 5. Iowa St - sorry Cy, got to be competitive

    4. KU - Longest continuous series west of Missouri, last year left bad taste, but one year a rivalry does not make

    3. KSU - NU-Snyder was pretty good, but you need two teams, not a team and a coach.

    2. CU - Nice guys and the worst fans in the country finish second. Again you need two teams, not one to make a rivalry

    1. MU - If we had to pick a B12 North team as a rival I think the only reasonable choice would be Missouri. They are the only team who over many decades have provided the best competition. Rivals are forever - you can have the soup de jour, but not the rival de decade

    My $0.02.

  5. 6 –Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Thank you Lou Holtz. He went 100-30. Losing their last 9 bowl games is a disgrace. Three National championships since 1970 keeps you around at least for the time being. Charlie Weiss better be for real, or you will be considered the most overrated sports organization in history.

    or?

And the author is not a homer. The article was from a radio station in No Carolina. Unless he's a transplant <_<

  6. The university is going to find a way to sell all those tickets one way or another. They have to get the streak to 300 before they even think about letting a game go un-sold-out (if that's even a word...)

The 300th Sellout will be on Sept. 26, 2009 against Arkansas State

One big thing i noticed when i moved away from the great state of Nebraska: TV ads for college football.

  7. In the related story section:

    OSU wristband tells story

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — The orange band around quarterback Zac Robinson's left wrist was inside out, so he had to twist it around to reveal the message inside.

Printed in black letters was Oklahoma State's preferred ending for this season: Big 12 champs. www.pickensplan.com: How can we reduce our dependance on foreign oil?

  8. "Spring (practice) was tough, but I think this is taking it up to a whole new level," said Asante**, the top returning tackler out of bounds pusher from a defensive unit that allowed 37.9 points per game in a 5-7 season that led to the firing of Bill Callahan coach-whose-name-shall-not-be-mentioned as head coach.

Bring it on and knock the snot out of the opponents ball carrier! I am SO pumped for this next season.

    :clap:clap:clap

**(I don't want to put down the player, but last year's wussy attitude)

  9. The thing I usually associate with ND is that they usually are in the top 5 in recruiting every year, but seldom win against Top 10 ranked opponents. (Except maybe against Mechicken).

Even when Granny Holtz was coaching there, it was often said that "few have done so little with so much".

One reason that Notre Dumb consistantly is in top 5: BECAUSE a player is being recruited by Notre Dumb the rating services automatically raise their rating on the player BECAUSE Notre Dumb always recruits the "best players"

  10. Pitt in the NC game ain't gonna happen. I still say NU finished 8-4 and goes to the Alamo Bowl.

I will be pleased with any bowl, but exceedingly happy if the bowl isn't on the g** d*** NFL channel. What monkey butt set up that deal? Note to Big 12 - slowly put down that contract and run!

  11. Can anyone make out what it says on the cover?

OK now I know this is a fake:

    top: Nebraska Football

above the logo: "Smart Tough"

below the logo: I think it says "Dependable"

  12. I wonder if him letting someone post a picture of the playbook had anything to do with playing time. BC seemed like a control freak, maybe he got a little ticked. :dunno

    callahan_playbook.jpg

    Volume 1. Didn't show volumes 2-4

  13. Link

We offer a handicap of "watch-out" opening weekend games featuring Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA) schools on the road against major conference opponents:

    Included in the 10 was:

    Western Michigan at Nebraska:

    • Upset potential: Have you seen Nebraska's defense this century?

    • Reality check: Cornhuskers Coach Bo Pelini wouldn't dare lose his debut with Athletic Director Tom Osborne sitting in the press box.

  14. OSU - Love them if you are playing them for NC, hate them if you were ranked #3 -15 and would have done better.

    USC - Eh

Notre Dumb - Still #1 (see this year's ESPN preseason rankings)

    UF - should be lower

OU - Respect, don't hate yet love to beat.

Meechigan - Notre Dumb lite, should be higher

Texas - should be higher (buy a championship anyone?)

    Bama - drop off list

    Miami - agreed

    Tenn - annoying, not hated

Replacements - Fresno "cheap shot" State for the opponents injured punt returners. Residual hate (see Miami)

Other possibilities - Penn St. (for their uni's), Oregon (for their uni's)

    Regional bias: KSUcks

  15. How can you deny that recruiting IS what matters?

Hasn't done Florida State a damn bit of good. Miami's class of 2005 has been something of a disappoint too.

I think it stands to reason that 3 years of stellar recruiting for ND will pay off. The sheer athleticism alone will win games.

    The rest is coaching.

Bottom line: you won't win anything if you don't have the recruits. I don't care if Lombardi came back and coached your team, you're not going to win.

So KU wasn't 12-1 last year based on their recruiting history? Does that make Mangino better than Lombardi? It can also go the other way - good recruiting does not neccessarily produce good results. Team chemistry - too many prima donnas looking for their ticket to the NFL, bone headed play calling, recruiting mostly offense and 3 QBs and 7 WR per year and ignoring needs. Sound familiar?

I would say its EASIER to win with good recruits. Its more important to have recruits that the coaches feel are good for their school and position needs, not what recruiting services say.

  16. Just don't nobody mention anything about the muzac for the Tunnelwalk!

    oh sirius? lol

    "sureley you're not sirius"

"no I'm completely serious, and quit calling me shirley"

    :yeah:ahhhhhhhh:cheers
