Not to get ahead of ourselves (Cause that's what we do).

But who would you see replacing Watson in a couple years at OC?

Ozzy? Want to get more hands on with the Football team w/o all the scrutiny?

Whatever happens with Brett Favre today, chances are it will only leave you more cynical.

The shame is that, in the not so distant past, Favre was the pure guy, the untouchable, the great teammate who played for the love of the game. Now he shows up in training camp having spent the last few days contemplating how much it would have cost the Packers to keep him retired.

Green Bay didn't meet his price. That doesn't mean he didn't have one, though.

And for most people, that's the real price of this maudlin play, starring Brett Favre as "Redneck Hamlet." He's gone from being an icon to just another superstar, another guy who, despite the most earnest proclamations, puts himself above the team.

You expected this from Manny Ramirez, who dogged his way out of Boston.

Or maybe Kobe Bryant, who demanded a trade after the Lakers didn't deal Andrew Bynum for Jason Kidd.

But Favre? The Wrangler man, the virtuous every-man who headbutts his own linemen? The guy who made every football fan in America believe he'd play for free?

Turns out he's just another guy who held a franchise hostage. And of all people, Favre — who made his non-retirement announcement an annual ritual — should have known better.

This year was different, though. By saying goodbye in a tearful, nationally televised press conference, he gave even casual fans an emotional stake in his retirement.

Then he changed his mind. Maybe I'm no one to judge that. Certainly, it was fine with the Packers, who chartered a plane to Mississippi to work out the details of the un-retiring.

But then Favre told them not to bother. I changed my mind again, he said.

The Packers re-accepted his resignation with fresh regret. Aaron Rodgers, Favre's long-time understudy, would finally get his shot. Green Bay also used two draft picks on quarterbacks.

Then Favre started to get "the itch." He denied it, of course. Actually, in true superstar fashion, he had his people deny it. Meanwhile, he was telling the Packers, I changed my mind again.

Change your mind once, OK. Change it again, less OK. But to jerk people around as Favre has done — issuing public denials while allegedly negotiating with a divisional rival — is not. I don't like taking management's side, but he's humiliated a team that tried to do the right thing by him.

Then again, judging from the Packers' Sunday press release, they are a team ripe for humiliation. This is not an outfit schooled in the finer points of crisis management. First, the Packers couldn't trade Favre. Then they couldn't bribe him. Now, they can't figure out what to do. Telling him to show up in Green Bay — but only after the commissioner said he just couldn't keep Favre out any longer — does not amount to a plan.

It's a good move only if it helps to trade him. Once in camp, Favre forfeits his right to refuse a deal. But after reading team president Mark Murphy's tortured statement, you have your doubts. Basically, the release calls Favre a liar while saying he'll be welcome in camp. My favorite sentence: "Having crossed the Rubicon once when Brett decided to retire, it's very difficult to reorient our plans and cross it again in the opposite direction but we'll put this to our advantage."

Maybe Ari Fleischer had something to do with that gem. The former White House press secretary has been working with the Packers as a consultant. That's no reason to be cynical; he's entitled to make a score. After all, the pros from Washington never claim to be pure.

But the last time I recall Ari Fleischer, he was telling everyone about the weapons of mass destruction.

  3. I like what I'm hearing about the defensive guys losing weight and becoming quicker and more explosive. That is closer to a SEC type of defense that would destroy most of the offenses in the Big XII. Smaller defenses don't necessarily mean worse defenses. I can't wait to see them flying around the field considering I just bought tickets to the season opener a few days ago. :thumbs

Still, with an "SEC Defense" , let's hope we don't run in to a smashmouth Offense like the '95 Huskers.

Fla is still trying to tackle Tommie Frazier.

  4. Depends on the weather and how late in the season it is.

Bowl games suck hard in the daytime, but in the northern States..You'd freeze your nads off at night games if you weren't careful.

Do the games usually start at 1:30 still? (Last game I saw in Lincoln was a night game with Washington the year they won the MNC).

  5. Anyone here under 45, watch a copy of the "Game of the Century" (1971).

You just knew the last team with the ball would win it..I was 11 when I saw it and it imprinted on me so much, I forever subconsciously used it as my definition of Rivalry.

I also find it suspicious that the fall of Communism in Russia coincided with OU scrapping the Wishbone. <_<

We'll get that rivalry back once we're both in the top 10 on a consistent basis and both of us start playing in the conference championship game every year.

  6. Last season, I was buying some beer on a Sunday when a bus pulled up and 4 guys in tuxes got out. Sure looked like a wedding party to me, but where I'm from (the Great State of Missouri) NO ONE gets married on a Sunday.... priests and ministers just don't do that.

I asked one of these guys, "Wedding? On a Sunday?". He says - "Couldn't do it on Saturday.... there was a football game."

"Oh yea", I said. "Forgot I was in Nebraska".

    The above is true.

What happens in Missouri on Sundays that you can't have weddings?

  7. I have two damn weddings to attend this season that are really good friends of my wife. One on our bye week and the other I believe is on the day we play Mizzou. Come On!!! WTF!!! I am still trying to figure out how to play this one. Probably going to have to record it. Just sucks.

Sounds like a perfect time to "accidently" break a leg or two..Just so you're not well enough to go to a wedding, but still able to watch TV or listen to the radio.

  8. The best nonconference games:

    4. Virginia Tech at Nebraska, Sept. 27: Cornhuskers are 9-2 at home against ACC teams and could be ready to spring an upset over the Hokies in Bo Pelini's first major nonconference test.

So..Still not counting the Bowl game against MSU as his 1st major nonconference test.. <_<

  9. Where's the novelty in wearing Nebraska stuff in Nebraska?

I wear it out here to attract attention from other displaced Huskers..Sometimes I'll even get an occasional Sooner come up to me and reminisce about past games.

I wear ASU stuff whenever I go back to Nebraska..I can't believe how many semi-hot Chicks came up to me at P.O.Pears last time I was home, asking if I lived in AZ.

Shy (ugly) people like me need icebreakers for people to notice us.

Today, I'm wearing a (W.Moon) Vikings jersey at work and already had someone ask if I was a fan..(I usually only watch teams that have former Huskers on the roster).

I replied, No, I just bought the shirt for a couple bucks at a garage sale, and I don't want to ruin my good (Husker) stuff.

  10. From another board, the breakdown of the NU roster:

    51 true freshmen

    22 Rfreshmen

    30 Sophomores

    14 juniors

    26 seniors

Also from another board, the breakdown on scholarships is this:

    22 Fr

    10 rFr

    20 So

    12 Junior

    20 Senior

Probably, Calli planned to fill out the 08 class with JUCOs to balance the classes out. With various manipulations (redshirts, JUCOs, transfers, academic ineligibilities, DUIs etc.), things can be worked out. Of course, these things happen: Ohio State only had 15 guys in their 2007 class and 20 in both 2006 and 2008.

I am more concerned how these numbers align with depth at actual positions. While the renewed emphasis on the walk-on program will help, getting some scholarship D lineman will need to be a priority for this class or next.

I realized shortly after my post that we weren't just talking Scholarship players..That 51 Freshmen is actually a good thing (Influx of Walk-ons).

Having only a dozen Scholarships free up in a couple years might be a little tough on us, but I think the surrounding recruiting classes might be able to absorb some of the damage.

I'm curious..When did the current limitations on scholarships happen? Are there any more cuts on the horizon from the NCAA?

It's a shame, since we went from the Big-8 to the Big-12, there won't be any more Jared Tomich's.

(If memory serves, he was severely dyslexic..& prop48? , got proper diagnosis and special tutoring, went on to become an academic all conference and either 1st or 2nd team all conference selection).

  11. From another board, the breakdown of the NU roster:

    51 true freshmen

    22 Rfreshmen

    30 Sophomores

    14 juniors

    26 seniors

The problem (yet another) that Callahan left us with does not bode well for NU --- we will have a recruiting class coming up soon where we will have fewer than 20 scholarships to give (perhaps as few as ca. 15). This is because we will graduate out a class of only 14 players soon. This really impairs the program in its rebuilding process. NU already has major recruiting hurdles to surmount --- soon restricted numbers will be as well yet another problem.

Some of the greatest damage of the Callahan years has yet to manifest itself --- poor roster management is one of those problems. It will take very crafty work on Pelini's behalf to dig out of that one.

    51 True Freshmen?

    How is that Callahans fault?

  12. I kind of agree with this, you see converted linebackers all the time, and often you see them starting or starring having played a different position the previous year. I want to say this was the case with one of Auburn's LB's when we played them in the Cotton Bowl, and didn't ISU have at least one last year or the year before? That's just off the top of my head.

Utah apparently has a converted kicker playing LB.

Anyway Cody is a apparently a good kid who has been through a lot and deserves a shot, and if he's not good enough, maybe Will Compton can start.

Didn't we used to have a kicker from Vermillion? SD that played LB in highschool and was always begging the coaches to put him in on D?

    Kevin Seibel? or something?

  13. I am sure the games will come available for PPV. They know they can always gouge the Husker fans for 19.95 to 29.95 for a game and we will pay it.

In this day & age, when you can watch all the episodes of Southpark, or Boston Legal with your highspeed connection..

You'd think you'd be able to watch the games online. <_<
