  1. Not to knock LTW, but there is a reason he is the 3rd string QB and not at any other position. If he would have been able to push for starting time at LB they wouldnt have moved him to 3rd string QB. I dont know where everyone is getting all of their info about getting his athleticism on the field. If he was that great of an athlete he WOULD be on the field. But the coaching staff decided RS freshman could handle the LB duties better than LTW and he was best suited for a last case senario on the offense. I have to call it like it is, LTW is a tremendous team player but probably doesnt have the talent to push for a starting position at any position.

I was very impressed after watching LTW last spring. He has the strongest arm on the team, great size, and good speed. LTW and Cody started their Husker qb jobs at about the same time and if anyone remembers, Cody Green was nowhere near as good as Latravis. Watch the spring game over and you'll see that Cody's play then, mirrors his play during the season. Last year was Zac's third year in the system which makes it easy to understand why he was given the starting spot. Latravis and Cody were both new but with Cody being a true freshman, everyone saw him as the qb of the future. Just my opinion but I feel that Green’s youth was the only reason that he was ahead of Latravis on the depth chart.

    A Latravis clip

  2. First he has to get qualified. From his video, his throwing mechanics and accuracy are ahead of Green, LTW and Martinez already. I'd put him and Spano neck and neck, assuming he's healthy. Only thing I saw with Brion is he needs to work on his footwork a bit, but so do 99% of high school QB's.

    Passing accuracy I see as

    Lee

    Carnes\Spano

    Green

    Arm strength I think is

    Green

    Lee

    Spano

    Carnes

    Running ability I see as

Green\Carnes (Green more speed in a wide open field, Carnes better at getting into the open field and making people miss)

    Lee

    Spano

    This is just my .02

I say Carnes redshirts, might have been a different if he was an early entry, but he won't pickup the scheme in fall practice. I wish Wats and Bo would just move Martinez to the slot in spring, because that's where his future is IMO and where we would actually help the team most (not that he cares).

You do not have Martinez in your rankings --- but in terms of speed and quickness, Martinez is in an entirely different league from the others --- he is considered, in pads --- one of the fastest and quickest on the entire team --- likely in the top 3-4 on the squad in that regard (at least that is what people on the team have said). He likely would be far and away the best runner of the QB's. Honestly, the only ones we have seen in action are Lee and Green running the ball. Neither is a very natural runner. Lee is a little shiftier than Green, Green is straight line faster but has poor field vision, runs straight up and down and hits defenders too high and is already falling before contact. Lee is not a natural runner either. That is, neither Green nor Lee are particularly able runners. Mobile, athletic -- sure. But dual threat --- not really.

As far as passing is concerned, who knows? Green has shown that he is really out of sorts, inaccurate and slow in delivery (mechanically) and he throws ill advised passes (it is somewhat of a miracle he did not have more picks). Then again, he was young, put in in tough situations and can, and should, improve. That said, unless he vastly improves he aught to redshirt and tinker with the notion of a position change.

I'd guess Lee is the certain starter based upon experience --- so long as he is healthy. Martinez and Spano, Green, Kellog, Washington and Carnes will compete for the #2 & 3 spot. Most likely, Carnes --- and, I hope, Green, redshirt. That would still leave Martinez, Washington and Spano as back-ups (in no particular order).

Robsker I agree with EVERYTHING you said! I feel like Green wasted his first year. I hope the same doesn't happen with Carnes.

  3. West better not be anywhere near the field unless everyone is hurt. I also think you take Hagg and put him in a safety position where he isn't matched up on a receiver so often. Unless he gets better, his coverage was not very good this year, but his run stopping talent is hard to find so I'm not sure what to do with him. Just hope his cover skills get better which they should with another offseason in the system. I'm excited to see Andrew Green and see what he can do also.

Well West played a decent amount this year and I would expect that to remain the case in 2010, Coaches like him. As far as Green goes, he is someone that the coaches love. Really physical is the description, if he is that physical maybe he can take over the NB spot from Hagg and allow Hagg to move to Safety? Only question is his size, Andrew is listed at 6'0" tall and 175lbs on the roster. However those are from the beginning of the year I believe so it is possible he is heavier now and will also have Winter and Summer Conditioning to get even bigger. Hagg is listed at 6'2" tall and 205lbs, I would guess Green would need to be around 200lbs to play the NB spot as effectively as Hagg. Only question is if Green adds that much weight does that cause him to be a non-factor at cover corner? Prince will be gone after 2010 so we need someone to get some PT there and be ready to step up in 2011 along side Dennard.

Gomes and Thorell should be able to handle the nickel and dime spots next season. It would be nice if Green and Middleton can get reps at corner. Prince and West will be gone soon and the only other corners with experience at the spot are Dennard and Blue.

  4. QB - Zac Lee, Cody Green, Latravis Washington

RB - Roy Helu, Rex Burkhead, Tray Robinson

FB - Tyler Legate, Tray Robinson

WR - Niles Paul, Curenski Gilleylen, Antonio Bell

WR - Brandon Kinnie, Khiry Cooper, Will Henry

TE - Mike McNeill, Chase Harper, Dreu Young, Ben Cotton

LT - Mike Smith, Jermarcus Hardrick, Mike Moudy

LG - Keith Williams, Brent Qvale

C - Mike Caputo, Quentin Toailoa, Cole Pensick (DT)

RG - Ricky Henry, Brandon Thompson

RT - Marcel Jones, DJ Jones, Andrew Rodriguez

*Red Cat- Taylor Martinez, Rex Burkhead

I'm thinking Zac Lee will put up better numbers next year. It would have been ideal for Green to redshirt last year. He looked very antsy whenever he was put in the game as there were false starts and he just didn't looked very composed. I wish he could redshirt next year but that won't happen. Roy and Rex will probably be 1A and 1AA like Roy and Lucky were a few years ago. Tray will play a lot still. I'm betting he'll play some FB again next year like he did against Texas. Niles should finish his career strong and Kinnie should build off of how he finished this season. I'm not sure what's gonna happen with the TE position but there is so much talent there. Hopefully the line plays better than last year. I can't wait to see what this year’s class can do up front. Hardrick, Moudy, and Rodriguez should all be big time difference makers in the near future. Moving Pensick to center would really help with our depth there. I don't think he has a legit shot at playing on the DL. Rex looked good running the Red Cat against Zona and Taylor would be an upgrade since he can also throw.

Quentin Toailoa is no longer a part of the team so there is no way he will be the back up Center. The other option you listed is Pensick, but I don't see him moving next year. You may not think he has a shot of playing on the D-Line, but Carl P. was recently gushing over him and Randle so they apparently see more in him than you do. It will be interesting to see where he is in 2011 though with all of the D-Line recruits coming in. Don't forget Ash or Sirles for the O-Line, both were highly praised repeatedly with Qvale this year by the coaches. They will make their presence known and I expect to see 1 on the 2-Deep next season. I think Jemarcus Hardrick gets one of the starting Tackle Spots, if he gets the RT spot then I think Marcel Jones takes over at LT.

I knew Quentin Toailoa had the injury problem but I didn't expect him to leave the team. We are pretty thin at Center and not so much at DT (Crick, Moore, Stein, Randle, the two recruits (Guy and Rome) and possibly at times Cam Meredith). Yea Carl said some good things about Pensick and Randle but there was similar talk about Kyler Reed at Linebacker last year and he ended up moving back to tight end. What do you think will happen and what do you think should happen at Center?

  5. DE - Pierre Allen, Jason Ankrah

DE - Cameron Meredith, Josh Williams

DT - Jared Crick, Chase Rome, Thaddeus Randle

DT - Baker Steinkuhler, Terrence Moore

Diesel - Josh Williams, Jason Ankrah

Will - Lavonte David, Mathew May

Mike - Will Compton, Alonzo Whaley, Matt Holt

Buck - Sean Fisher, Eric Martin, Thomas Grove

CB - Prince Amukamara, Andrew Green, Lazarri Middleton

CB - Alfonzo Dennard, Anthony West, Anthony Blue

    Nickel- Dejon Gomes, Dijon Washington

Dime - Lance Thorell, Anthony Blue

7B - Anthony West, Eric Hagg

SS - PJ Smith, Eric Hagg

FS - Rickey Thenarse, Austin Cassidy, Harvey Jackson

    1. Eric Hagg will play FS ...IMO

    2. You have Andrew Green as the back-up CB is Prince...which I agree...but then you dont have him as a nickel, dime or the 7th back position...if he is our 3/4 best corner don't you think he will be our Dime or 7th back...

    this is what i think

    CB- Dennard, Prince

    S- Hagg, Smith

    Nickel- Gomes

    Dime- Blue-Green, West

7th- Whoever is behind the Dime back...

    just my thoughts

You would think so but last years Nickel Back, Hagg, was not the 3 or 4th corner. West was #2 at both Left and Right Corner and he never took reps at Nickel. West did take snaps at the 7b which is why I have him listed there. I think Hagg fits more of the SS role. It is very similar to the the Nickel which has been his role for the past 2 seasons.

  6. QB - Zac Lee, Cody Green, Latravis Washington

The DLine won't be as good as last years but there will be a major improvement as far as depth. I'm not sure who Phil's replacement will be in the Dime but there are some pretty good options. Hopefully Compton can improve the way Dillard did this season. Lavonte could also be that guy but I haven't seen much from him yet. The secondary will be stacked again. PJ Smith will make a solid starter. Hopefully Rickey T is back and healthy next year.

  7. There is talent on both sides of the ball. Sad thing is only one side played to its potential this season. Nebraska's recruiting classes have been pretty good the past few years on both offense and defense. There is no way a team of its caliber should rank 101 in total offense, 80 in total points scored, 68 in rushing and 101 in passing! (1)(2)(3)(4) It's ridiculous but the defense faced the same problem a few years ago. It was stacked with high caliber recruits who weren't being coached up to their potential: Steinkuhler, Potter, Turner, Allen, Suh, Wortman, Dillard, Ruud, Octavien, A Jones, Bowman, Murillo, Grixby, Blue, Asante, and even Green. In the end we find out that the same defense many people said had no talent actually had a decent amount of NFL caliber players, even had a future heisman candidate. Maybe the 09 offense doesn't have the same hidden gems that the 07 defense had but the cupboards certainly are not bare. Hopefully the offense starts using the talent that it has.

  8. As others have said, Hunter, it is not true and never was. Keller beat out Ganz for the job. Ganz, however, really turned it on in the games and had the complete support of his teammates, unlike Keller, and that was what made the difference. It doesn't change the fact that Keller just won the job, like 90% of us wanted and expected. Hindsight's something, isn't it?

Now, I have no direct knowledge of the situation, but I suspect neither do you. But I am going off on what people more in the know have said, and it seems - correct me if I am wrong - that you are purely speculating.

I see what your saying. My point is simply this, Zac Lee and Cody Green based on how they 'practiced' got the lions share of time this year at quarterback. There wasn't much room for anyone else. However Joe Ganz is a perfect example of how a talanted player who may not have practiced (apparently) as well as the guy before him can indeed come in and perform better than the guy above him on the depth chart when things really matter i/e when playing in an actual game. Nebraska's offense was absolutely pathetic this year. It's time to shake things up a bit and start looking at some other guys and by that I mean giving guys like Washington or whomever actual playing time to see what they can do because if anyone's offense needs a major shot in the arm right now it is ours.

There's a big difference between a hardworking kid who put in his time to completely earn the system for four years and become the No.2 QB, and a guy who didn't work hard or put in the mental reps for the LINEBACKER position and who is in his first season as a QB.

Let's not forget, this Ganz kid got reps over Harrison Beck (didn't he?), was Taylor's No.2, fought Keller pretty close in what most figured was just coach speak to keep Ganz from leaving, and then got his shot as a No.2 coming in for No.1's injury.

LTW couldn't sniff the rotation at linebacker in spite of his immense physical talent, his years in the system, the VERY RARE level of need we had at LB last year. Instead of cracking the LB rotation, coaches went to a newly converted RB and a couple of true freshman walk-ons - one of them a walk-on SAFETY at the time - to fill the void. And despite this year's huge hole at QB and the HUGE need to redshirt Cody Green, LTW never gave coaches that possibility and we went after a transfer like Paulus and rushed Spano back from injury. And on top of that, even after deciding to forgo Cody's redshirt, LTW got stuck into a couple games so that he wouldn't be saving this year.

Sure does not sound like coaches are looking at him as even having 2-deep potential. But no doubt he is playing an important role on the team, especially this year, and something that is very needed. I'm sure he's a good kid, too...I am just extremely bewildered at the basis on which people are thinking he is going to learn the O down pat.

    excellent in all areas....... :facepalm::thumbs

How Latravis did at linebacker has nothing to do with his ability to play qb. He never played backer before he came to NU, they tried him there because of his size and skill set. I'm sure Zac and Cody wouldn't have fared too well on defense either. It really surprises me that anyone who's seen this guy play qb in practice, scrimmages, or games wouldn't want this guy to get a chance. The theme for football these days is to get your athletes the ball and the wildcat is the latest craze. NU ran it last year with Marlon Lucky. Now you have this guy who is 6'3" 225, and runs some where around a 4.5 with a strong arm and you don't want this guy to see the field??? I wish we used our talent. If they feel like Cody is the future, they could have Cody and Zac run whatever offense Wats plans to run next year while Latravis is the Wildcat/Tebow guy.

  9. Ganz was a devoted understudy who really, really bought into the offense to make up for his physical shortcomings. He was able to step in during his third, fourth years in the program and he really took off in the fifth.

LTW has worlds of athletic potential, but couldn't get his head into the game after several season of linebacker, and is in his first season at QB.

Yeah, both are backups, but that is a REALLY untenable connection trying to be made.

Latravis isn't a linebacker. He played both ways in high school but he never played backer. Dual threats get moved all the time in college. LTW could have been like Martinez and fought for a spot a qb from day 1 but he's not that kinda guy. Paul Thompson from Oklahoma went through something similar. Never got his shot until his 5th year and led OU to a Fiesta Bowl birth. I hope this guy gets his shot

  10. I'm with Huck. LTW has the best arm on the team. The comment about him being inaccurate doesn't make much sense. Maybe you haven't seen Cody and Zac but their balls have looked pretty bad! LTW does have a strong arm but most people would see that as a positive. We came close to never seeing Ganz because of Keller and Beck. Turns out Ganz was a pretty good qb. LTW needs a shot!

  11. I think the OP was probably thinking of the '05 class.

I wondered about that. I think you're right.

no not the 05 class, the 07 we had alot of highly rated recruits that commited, but like for ex

    10 4* players

OL Javario Burkes - no longer with the team (injuries?)

RB Q Castille - kicked off

DT Kevin Dixon - what happened to him?

LB Blake Lawrence - injuries, personal problems?

DL Joseph Townsend - what happened to him?

DE Willian Yancy - what happened to him?

all of those guys were 4*

    the rest were

    Niles Paul

    zac lee

    Armando Murillo

    Larry Asante

    what happened to these guys:

    DT shukree barfield

    LB austin stafford

    DL demetrious davis

    DB shawn sullivan

Looks like a pretty good recruiting class.

Javorio started as a true freshman. Just had medical problems.

Q broke out late last year and was expected to be half the reason our offense was gonna have success this year, even though we were breaking in a new QB.

K Dixon got in to legal trouble, transferred to Troy St, and had a pretty solid season. I'm betting he would've done pretty good if he would not have been kicked off the team last year.

Townsend never made it here so we'll never know with him.

Will Yancy is the only 4 star that probably would have never seen the field but in his defense, I think he may have had injury problems.

Barfield didn't get a lot of pt but he was a pretty good DT. He rippid it up his last game for us with 2 sacks against the Buffs.

Austin Stafford had a lot of off the field problems. We'll never know how good he could've been.

    Shawn Sullivan was not good.

I have know clue what happened to Demetrious Davis either.

Looking back, this class was solid!

Curenski, Prince, Jaivorio, Marcel, Barfield, Asante, T Moore, Murillo, Hagg, Lee, Kunalic, Lawerence, Helu, Castille, Ryan Hill, Witt, Blue, Crick, Paul, and Latravis who could be a beast if given a chance. Solid!!

  12. When? The South has owned the North ever since the conference was formed. Go look at the Big 12 Champions. The South won 2 of the first 3. The North has never won back to back Big 12 Championships. The South is 9-4.

You must have just started watching football. Any person who really knows anything about college football knows that after the formation of the conference, NU was the favorite to win the Big XII title every year of that decade. Get a clue! A lot of people today seem to have very short term memories!

  13. This is my second Husker game watching this year. The other game that i saw was against KU. Nebraska usually isn't a very competive team when it comes to basketball but man, I'm very excited for this years team!

  14. Try living in California with all the fair-weather fans of USC.... I'm pretty sure there will always be at least one person in every city in the U.S. that hates Nebraska for the rest of my life....

I feel you! USC Trojans and the New England Patriots are two teams I will always hate because of all the fair-weather fans they have RIGHT NOW!

  15. im not counting out burkhead at all......i was watching him in the one on one drills at the nike camp RBs vs LBs and he was the most fluid back out there. he looked better than the five star players that were there and i dont think it was even close.

within 2 years burkhead will be starting and he will be tearing it up!

Just watched the RB's v LB's vid also and I was very impressed with Rex. I'd have to agree, he was by far the best back out there. The backfield will be solid in a few years with Rex and Trey!

  16. Helu and Castille will carry the running attack for us next year. I think Mendoza will get in the mix next year when Castille is in at fullback. Mendoza's style is very similar to Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps of UF, he needs to see the field.

A few years from now, Trey Robinson will be a baller. I've heard that he didn't have a good season this year but if you watch his highlights, you can tell that he's a baller. I see him being something like Brandon Jackson. I've yet to see any highlights of Lester Ward and Collins Okafor highlights weren't any different than Leon Jackson's were. Okafor's entire highlight tape is of him running in open field without breaking a tackle or even making a juke, spin, or cut. Maybe Burkehead will help out but I think Trey Robinson is the future at the spot.

  17. I don't remember any of this certainty that Ganz was the better QB in the early fall of '07. There were a few Ganz backers as I recall, but most assumed it was a foregone conclusion that Keller would start, for more reasons than any promises made by Callahan.

I'll admit I thought Keller was a clear #1 at the time, and that I was wrong.

Everybody wanted Keller to start. t's messed up for all these fans to blame Callahan for not starting Ganz over Keller. Sam had experience and anyone who watched the spring game that year could tell that he also had the stronger arm. Picking Ganz over Keller at the beginning of the 2007 season would've been like picking the Arizona Cardinals to make it to this years Super Bowl. Things might've worked out with Ganz but you can't blame Callahan for going with Sam

  18.

Idk that I'd put USC #1. They are always stacked, you're right (and it sickens me), but they lose A LOT off of that revered defense this year, including Maualuga and Cushing. I think we deserve to be a little higher, probably above UNC. I'd also drop Miami out of the top 25... they suck. Nuff said. Also I have no idea why Georgia is that high... they're losing both Stafford and Moreno. Also, get Iowa outta there. See Miami comment. And I live in Iowa.

Stafford was a very talented qb but don't forget about Joe Cox. Cox has experience and he is a very good qb. He had a few starts the year after DJ Shockley left and he looked very impressive. Georgia also has very talented rb's in Caleb King and Richard Samual. They underachieved big time in last season but I don't see it happening two years in a row.

  19. This poll isn't considering strength of schedule. Not interested in how good other teams are. Just wanna know who you think are the best teams going in to next season.

    Here's mine:

    1. Florida

    2. Texas

    3. Oklahoma

    4. Alabama

    5. USC

    6. Georgia

    7. Ole Miss

    8. Virginia Tech

    9. Penn St

    10 Ohio St

    11. Pitt

    12. Oklahoma St

    13. Florida St

    14. Oregon

    15. LSU

    16. North Carolina

    17. Nebraska

    18. Oregon St

    19. Miami(FL)

    20. Texas Tech

    21. Utah

    22. Kansas

    23. Iowa

    24. Georgia Tech

    25. TCU

  20. Why would the coaches take the ball away from Q yesterday? He was doing great...all year we have said stay will one running back...now one running back gets almost all the carries and does really well...and we want to give the ball to our 4th string running back?????

It's always great to have a running back step up and show that he can be the man in a game but... name one team in all of football, college or pro's who doesn't have some sort of rb roation.

    Name ONE!
