Piggybacking off others, the game has three phases. NU is fair in one, good/very good in another and absolutely sucks ballz in the third. Coaching? Dunno. Jovan's a frigging rocket scientist, but summin' ain't right. Fix that third phase and we be groovin'.

Ya I can't get that nerdy about it. But exponential is more specific than multiplicative. I don't think the following definition applies to an increasing rate of improvement for the offense. "Exponential growth is exhibited when the rate of change—the change per instant or unit of time—of the value of a mathematical function is proportional to the function's current value" (ya it's from wikipedia).

    Multiplicative covers all of these:

Now I'm going to steal someone's answer that I've just now randomly found 'cause it sounds smart and kinda summarizes the way I'm seeing it.

I plussed this because you used a word (multiplicative) with more syllables than I have toes. And by the way, you're smarter than I am, but I just stole your hubcaps.

It seems similar to me, after reading the following. For the record, I'm not very passionate about defending Al Gore, I just feel this quote has been misused and overused. I'm just pasting this from Wikipedia. A lot of it is new information to me.

Hooray Nebraska quarterbacks. GO BIG RED!

Not to derail this further and not a dig at anyone but I gotta get this in.....I used to go to Snopes for clarity on various claims until I came across enough evidence to satisfy me that the site can't be trusted.

Just do a search of Snopes and unbiased and you'll see what I mean.

The husker fans mindset, "everyone on the coaching staff was horrible except parella.  Parella is a Nebraska boy and Nebraska boys are never bad."  Sorry, but parella didn't improve the dline and he was just as bad as the rest of the coaching staff.  Just because he's a Nebraska man doesn't mean he gets exempted from being an average to below average coach.

I'll stand corrected if anyone can show me proof but don't recall anyone on this board saying that ever saying that everyone on the staff sucked except Parrella.

Cavanaugh already landed another gig with Syracuse if I recall.

As for Parella, I'm sure he'll be fine.  I mean if Cavanaugh, Kevin Cosgrove, and Mark Banker can all find employment elsewhere, there's zero reason to think JP can't.

There are not enough facepalms in the world for this.....

  7. Whatever happened to John? Has he landed a gig yet? Really feel for him. He got a shot at the big time and landed in a coaching regime that could not have sucked worse. I hope his career will not be poisoned by the Riley era taint. No one really got a chance to see what he could do with a good staff around him. Also gotta feel for the DL players.....yet another coach.

Rambling further afield I hate to wish ill on anyone but I pray that Mike Cavanaugh hangs it up. That guy couldn't coach a cat to have an attitude.

None of us know what happened and speculating on this stuff is a nice intellectual exercise (no pun intended....okay, maybe un poco). My gut feeling is that if there were a lot more kids suffering from this (ala I_OWA), you can point at the staff. But consider this:

    1. there were only two players affected
    2. none that we know of at CFU while Duval was there
    3. the staff had previously dialed down the intensity
    4. the team's clear lack of conditioning when Duval arrived (how many players have been tapping their helmets during games over the last few years)

I'm tentatively thinking that this was more of an anomaly than anything. Now, it if continues righteous indignation is appropriate but at this stage harping at the SC staff seems premature.

  9. "Now a 38-year-old assistant heading to Nebraska, Chinander has as many sayings for his players as ways to pressure a quarterback: Do your one-11th. Be fast and fierce. Desire to excel and don’t fear failure."

    OWH

I have no idea if Chinander is going to work out here, but the bolded part above gives me hope. I've been coaching girls soccer for 19 years and one thing I've always preached was "....just try. Don't worry about making a mistake, just try. I can fix anything but slow."

Growing up I had coaches who were technically competent to varying degrees, but most of them were obsessed with results. They spent a little time on process, but if you made a mistake they were crawling up your butt, chewing you out and making you over-think. The result was playing slow. TO was all about process; he preached that once the process was down and continuity established, results would follow. Pretty good formula.

I have no problem telling a player how to improve after they make a mistake.....that's what coaches should do. But how you do it is at least as important what you say.

Don't fear failure. Learn from the mistake, try not to repeat it and then put it in the rearview mirror.

Dave Doeren, staying at NC State instead of heading to Tenn.

What's going on in Tenn is just weird. The fans have wigged out in epic fashion and now seem to be calling the shots on candidates. I'd be saying the same thing if it happened here. Gotta wonder how many of them now wish they had hired Schianno.

O-line? Cheap azz Canadian whiskey is messing with my last two brain cells, and they're cousins. Going to back to Wild Turkey 101.

With Ruud identified as one possible assistant, and Chinander as the DC, here is what a potential staff could look like:

OC:  TBD (would love Walters but I bet he gets the HC spot at UCF)

    OL:  Greg Austin (Former Husker)

RB:  Ryan Held (Former Husker and teammate of Frost)

    WR:  Keith Williams

    QB:  Mario Verdusco

    TE:  TBD/Open

    DC:  Erik Chinander

    DL:  John Parella (former Husker)

    LB:  Barrett Ruud (former Husker)

    DB:  Donte Williams

    Special Teams/Associate HC:  Jovan Dewitt

    Admin:  Meghan Taylor :)

    http://www.ucfknights.com/coaches.aspx?path=football

    Admin:  Todd McShane...gotta keep him

    S&C:  Zach Duval (Former Husker)

Wasn't Greg Austin a D-Line player for NU? IIRC, the guy's knee's were absolutely shredded and it was a nightmare for him just to walk. The guy just continued to line up and go full tilt boogie.....
