  1. I was just scanning ahead to check out the game and to make sure that I can watch it. According to my DTV guide, 2:30 tomorrow on ABC is Texas A&M vs. Iowa State. The only channel that carries the Husker game is 397 which is... get this... ABC West. Why the hell would the West Coast want to watch Nebraska v. Minnesota?

This better be one of those stupid glitches or something.

Is this one of those things that I'll have to jimmy rig an antenna for so I can get ABC over the air?

    Help me.

It's either on ABC or ESPN2 everywhere in the US. Which channel is determined by location, not by DirectTV.

  2. MSU's defense was dominant; the best BIG defense this year IMO. They contained Robinson by stacking the box, blitzing, and playing man coverage with their corners. Honestly, DRob looks like he has limitations pretty similar to Taylor; he's just not a great passer. If our corners can play man without safety help, we'll have a good shot to contain the Michigan offense, but I'm not sure they can at this point.

  3. The PAC-12 network model is different from the B1G in that they are launching multiple regional networks. LHN would fit right into the PAC-12 model if TX would just share its network with Texas Tech. So if ESPN is willing to renegotiate the network deal (which they might be struggling as it is) it's not really an obstacle to PAC-12 expansion.

  4. Now I'm wonderin' if anyone else in Arizona that has the basic 100 channels on Dish Network has had any luck talking to a DN representative about adding the BTN without having to pay for the 200 channel package...

But I'm a little afraid to ask here..

    Let's see..maybe if I search "BTN,AZ,Dish"

I got BTN in Utah with America's Top 120+ and the sports package. Now, for the Wyoming game I might have to go up to 200 to get Versus...

  5. Dish is way cheaper for me than DirectTV would be at my programming level. Since I'm not in Big10 country, I have to pay an extra $7/month during football season for BTN, but it's still absolutely the better deal for me (especially since I like having NFL RedZone). The sports package is easy to add right when football season starts and then drop again when it ends for us out of area fans and really doesn't cost that much.

Basically, don't just jump to DirectTV for the BTN, weigh your options and costs first.

edit: also, all 120+ adds on Dish is local sports channels, so I'd imagine it will be revised to include the BTN in Nebraska fairly soon. I don't subscribe to it because I could care less about having Mountain West local sports.

  6. Now ESPN said that if he does leave, he can't play the following year with whatever college he goes to. Does anyone know why this is?

Isn't that the norm? You have to sit out a year after transferring.

Yeah, if a player transfers to another FBS school, they have to sit out a year. I think they have to sit out 2 years if they transfer within their own conference.

  7. Couldn't agree more. Another one to add to the list is the Big 10 #1. Doesn't Michigan St have the tie breaker over Wisconsin? So they are predicting a Penn St upset?

If Ohio St wins out, its a 3 way tie so BCS ranking decides who goes to the Rose Bowl, which favors Wisconsin. If Ohio St loses then Michigan St would have the tie-breaker over Wisconsin.

  8. I knew my sons x-box would pay, we did the espn-3 test run on the HD TV and it worked great through the x-box. Of course on saturday it will fail and I'll cranky.

How cool! Do you happen to know if this works on the PS3?

ESPN only advertises it for X-box Live, so I don't think so. Might be worth a try though? :dunno

  9. Just one question for your post. Three TD passes dropped isn't able to move the ball down field? Everyone new we weren't going to get 80 yard TD runs today. Oh yeah and everyone and their dog wanted him to pass the ball, and said that he couldn't if he had to. Well I thought he really threw pretty well. To bad our BIG HEADED recievers can't catch Wel at least PAUL with the BIG head. He should sit by the way.

Yeah, we were losing yards every other play. Martinez was passing OK, but his runs were going for negative yards. Lee came in and the offense started moving down the field methodically. Even though the receivers were dropping passes, he was making the right read and getting 3-4 yards when they took away the backs. Martinez had 3 touchdown passes dropped in nearly 3 quarters and Lee had one dropped in his quarter, so the passing was really pretty close. However, despite having less talent Lee was executing the running game better and getting positive yards nearly every rush. Martinez will get it figured out, but today was not his day.

Just a thought but I think that all the yards that you are talking about are the personal fouls and unsportsmanlike calls that went against Texas. That is the only thing that kept that drive alive. Damn Now I sound like a Lee hater and I am not I just want the best player in the damn game.

Lee's first drive: 83 yards (30 of them penalty)

    Previous 5 drives: 48 yards

I want the player who gives us the best chance to win and T-mart will be that in the future, but he just wasn't getting the job done.

  11. I still dont get why we took out T-Mart. Do the coaches not have confidence in him or what? I think we should have kept him in to show that the coaches still believe in him. Besides he gave us that big play threat. Lee doesn't. Martinez could have easily done what Lee did while he was in. The only difference was on Lee's drive Texas managed penalties for 30 yards. I think it was a huge mistake by the coaches to replace him.

I completely disagree. Martinez was getting nowhere and was making the wrong read in the running game over and over. Lee came in and gave us a shot to get back in the game. You don't stick with a quarterback just to show you believe in him, you go with the guy who gives you the best chance to win. Martinez will probably keep the starting job, but the coaches had to try to get the offense running.

  12. 1. No matter how wide open you are, dropping the ball makes you look foolish

    2. Shawn Watson may have been possessed by the spirit of Bill Callahan for a better part of 2 quarters

    3. Hang time isn't important during onside kicks

One other thing that I would ad is: When you replace a Qb that running is his strength, for a QB that passing is his strength Why in Gods Name would you keep running the F-ING Zone Read? I know that our recievers were dropping the ball which is inexcusable, but having Zac come in and run the F-ING ball is even more inexcusable. Taylor could have finished this game the same way. Why even take him out? Now we have a freshmen that has lost even more confidence because of the coaching staff. Sorry that is NOT how you get your F-ING spark!!!!!

You keep running the zone read because it's working. Even Lee was getting 3-4 yards a pop and the RBs were getting 6-7 yards. Even though T-mart is more explosive, he was making the wrong read way too often. Lee made the right read almost every time, which kept the offense moving.

  13. Summary: Bad calls all day from the refs...part of football though. However, more bad calls and spots than I have seen in awhile.

Watson should have stopped calling the zone read with Martinez Martinez made bad reads.

We did not make plays with dropped balls and fumbles.

Niles Paul should not be on the field with his consistent bad play.

The zone read is Martinez's bread and butter. If T-mart can't run the zone read, he shouldn't be in the game. Right call by Watson to take him out.

  14. WE b---- if we play vanilla. We b---- when the kids make mistakes.

We put up what 400 yards of offense, how many times last year?

We b----- about the QB play, we b----- about coaching.

Give it a rest, next week will be different.

amen. our offense is averaging almost 500 yards of offense in the first two games. there is waaaayyyy too much pessimism going on here.

Our offense did the same last year during the Sun Belt stretch. Numbers mean next to nothing right now. The offense is making way too many mistakes for the level of competition and I too am concerned.

  15. No complaints from me. Those are valid, rational reasons to think this season could fall short of all the top 5-10 predictions people are throwing around. We could seriously have 4 losses and play in the Cotton or Holiday bowl. Or we could go undefeated and win the MNC. That's why preseason polls are mostly terrible. Every college team comes in with major question marks and until we see the teams take the field it's impossible to separate the real contenders from the also-rans.

  16. Who knows what teams are looking at him for. Fransisco Liriano was an outfielder prospect as well and turned into a pitcher. I'm sure GMs would give him a look in rookie ball or single-A, at least in practices, for throwing from the mound ... unless of course he were to tear it up as a fielder. :rant

We could lose Bubba four months after signing with us. Let's hope not! Thank God we have two great QBs in this class. :woo

You're right, he probably will get a look at both, but most scouts seem to think that his hitting is superior to his pitching at this point. It's also more common for pitchers to convert to postion players than vice versa, so he projects to outfield at this point. That could change depending on the scout you're talking to.

For reference, here's a link to some guy in some blog rating Bubba as the #18 high school prospect for next year.

And another link to some other guy rating him as the 20th overall prospect.

Tournament of Stars Standouts, Day Two

Posted Jun. 24, 2010 10:12 pm by Nathan Rode

Filed under: First Person, USA Baseball

It was a sweltering 100 degrees in Cary, N.C. today for the second day of USA Baseball's Tournment of Stars. Players, scouts and parents were dripping with sweat from the first pitch at 10 a.m. until the final out of the fourth game close to 6 p.m. Despite the oppressive heat, a couple players stood out today. . .

The star of the first game was outfielder/righthander Bubba Starling. Starling is a two-way threat and one of the best athletes in this year's class. He had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two triples.

Starling is proof that, if you're good, scouts will find you. The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder hails from Gardner Edgerton High in Gardner, Kan., a town of about 10,000 near the Kansas-Missouri border.

At this point, Starling said he doesn't have a preference on playing a position or pitching, but it's looking like he's better suited as a position player and is a potential five-tool guy.

"I love doing both," Starling said. "Whatever happens happens in college or wherever. I'm just excited to be out here."

Starling also took the mound for two innings, sitting 88-91 mph with his fastball and a 77-78 mph breaking ball. He didn't give up a hit, but did give up a run after he walked RBI outfielder Desmond Henry to start the seventh inning. Henry is very fast and stole second and third before scoring on a sac fly. Over the two innings, Starling issued the one walk (to Henry) and struck out one. He said he felt good on the mound, but admitted he has some kinks to iron outwhich is not uncommon for a three-sport athlete from an area that isn't a baseball hotbed.

"I've never had a pitching coach," Starling said. "So my coach today was like, 'Do you know what you're doing out there? Your mechanics suck.' And I was like, 'Well, I've never had a pitching coach, man.' He said I threw good and everything, I just have to work on my mechanics. I'm just pretty busy with both baseball and football and then I play basketball too, so it's never-ending."

Starling is also a standout quarterback that recently gave a verbal commitment to Nebraska.

  17. I know a minor league manager. He is from my hometown and he managed the futures game the other night. His name is Brian Poldberg for reference. He said in baseball if you get drafted as a pitcher you go as soon as you can to save your arm instead of throwing all of the innings that a college season would require. If you get drafted late as a position player you go to college and learn to hit better pitching and learn to play your position. Just thought I'd share his thoughts.

That really is a good rule for late round draft picks. The projected number 1 pick next year is SS Anthony Rendon. He was a late round (26th?) pick a couple years ago out of high school, but went to college instead and is now projected to be the #1 overall pick. 3 years in college will earn him millions of dollars. As Bubba is projected as an outfielder rather than a pitcher, that bodes well.

Like you said though, that really only works for late round players. If Bubba goes in the first 2 rounds or is offered overslot money (typical for players who fall in the draft because teams don't think they'll sign), I have a really hard time seeing him turning it down. I know I'd have a hard time turning down 1-5 million and a shot at MiLB to go to college. But if he's a late rounder, he could improve his stock alot by going to college.

  18. Seriously, how heavily are they rating defense? Most of the teams on their list don't even compare to 1995 Nebraska's offensive numbers.

    I love this part

The question, then, is how isn't this team higher on the list? The main reason: using points allowed as the measure, their defense was only good, not outstanding

But the nearest team in points scored (1993 FSU) has 100 points fewer than the '95 Huskers even though they played one more game. That must mean their offense was only good, not outstanding right?

And how about the 2002 Ohio State team? Giving up 9 more points than the Huskers (albeit in 2 more games), but scoring 228 fewer points even though they played 2 more games? How does that qualify either their defense or their offense as outstanding and get them rated above the '95 Huskers? Oh well, I guess it just points out how flawed their formula is.

  19. this makes me wonder if, and this is pure speculation, but if TU asked beebe to announce some special deal to convince TU to stay, to save face. instead of TU not getting what it wanted in the Pac 10, they can spin it that they decided it was 'better' to stay in the big 12-2, because of this incredible, miraculous, new-found tv deal, that was not there when they were trying to save the conference from NU and CU from leaving (and Mizzou for that matter).

And we have a winner! We've always known (or expected) that when the Big 12 TV deal was up, it would be able to negotiate rates more in line with the other major conferences. Texas didn't learn anything new with this groundbreaking information on new TV deals, they just didn't want to appear like the prima donna they are.
