  1. My biggest gripe about it is that it's becoming way more of a distraction. I understand that Bo wants the Blackshirts to be a loftily-held goal, but every year we're faced with these same questions. I wonder if the benefit of doing it this way is overshadowed by the anticipation of when they'll be handed out.

Just because it is a big distraction on message boards and for the media does not mean it is a distraction for the team or the defense.

  2. Bo is awarding the shirts in his own time, a little different than in the past, can't say i defend the change nor disagree either one, but there is no traditional timing with the presentation of the shirts now, not sure i really like the idea, and if he waits too long, what is the point?

I guess the question is if the blackshirts should be used as a motivator or reward? both have pros and cons, but I guess we just have to allow Bo Pa to do what he believes is best.

  3. Is this a thread about my next head coach?

No. Your sig is what will probably be your next new coach.

Could they afford a north american bison?

No. They will catch one from the wild. Thats how they got their "current" coach.

Hey, that was the nicest thing Colorado could have ever done for anyone when they took Hawkins from Boise State.

  4. Maybe I'm just naive, but I don't think race has anything to do with why people dislike the president. I think he's done enough other things which is what has motivated the hatred towards himself.

dont take this the wrong way junior, but you are naive...

I wish it was the way you say it. And i am sure there are a fair share of his doubters that do for the reason that you stated above. But unfortunatly, there are still alot people out there who are the "R" word.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are racist people out there. However, did you watch the protests they had a couple of weeks ago? There were several people there who weren't exactly caucasian.

To bring this full circle back with regards to Gill and the Auburn coaching position, I think it went something like this. Auburn knew who they wanted the minute they forced Tuberville out. However, they had to go through the rules and reg's set forth by the NCAA. I believe they wanted Chizick from the word go, but they had to follow guidelines before announcing him as their next coach. It's kind of like Tomlin at Pittsburgh. He blew them away during the interview process. He had limited coaching experience, and he was extremely young (youngest coach ever to win the Super Bowl). Pittsburgh hired him, and I highly doubt they have any regrets. While racism does still exist, football whether it be college or pro is about winning rather than the color of skin. Just because Auburn is in the South, I don't think race had anything to do with it. Sylvester Croom was hired by a college in the South. In terms of the ESPN show, I wonder if the reason Nebraska didn't take any heat for being racist was the fact that TO did give an interview and an explanation while Auburn declined only giving a written statement?

I agree with what you said. Although, I don't exactly know what "not exactly Caucasian" means. I think they did want Chiznik because they thought he was their guy. Of course I would have went with Gill, but I was glad he didn't go to Auburn because I don't think that program can maintain success, especially in the SEC. It was Miss. St. who hired the first African American coach with Croom. It is tough to say when race is or is not a factor and that is unfortunate and the problem. In Auburn with Chiznik, I do not think race was necessarily a factor, the issue is, though, we live in a country with a history where you still have to think about race even when in the end it was not a factor. Chiznik was there guy, and like Gill said, there are so many variables in deciding the right coach, it's impossible to speculate.

I'll say it again, Gill is a class act and I really respect his disposition. He'll get his chance, I just hope it's a place that will give him a chance and will not be a cut throat type program.

Also, I am sorry junior for misreading you and I am done with non-strictly football talk.

  5. Maybe I'm just naive, but I don't think race has anything to do with why people dislike the president. I think he's done enough other things which is what has motivated the hatred towards himself.

You are naive. Also, you are using the word "hatred" to describe how people feel about a person who was elected by a clear majority of the nation and a man who is trying to help the nation. I think you might have meant to write "disagreement" instead of "hatred". Disagreement is founded, any hatred is unfounded.

I know I should not have posted this because this is a husker football message board and there are plenty of other places to talk politics and discuss race relations. However, saying the President has done anything to create hatred toward him deserves to be responded to, if not reprimanded.

Maybe you should read a tad bit better before reprimanding someone. My response was towards this sentence:

"Only that to deny that race hasn't been a motivating factor at schools in that part of the country, is like saying that the hatred many people have for our current president is not in any way racially motivated."

If you need reference, go read the post above mine.

Maybe I should read better, but I was responding to you saying that the president has brought on hatred for himself. And you said, "but I don't think race has anything to do with why people dislike the president". Maybe I'm dense, but it seems like you said you don't think race has anything to do with why people dislike the president; I just don't know any other way to read that; also, reprimand was a bit strong, I was being dramatic.

  7. Turner was shafted at Auburn but in retrospect is that the place he really wants to start?

considering chizdik is now 5-0 with about the same group of tigers tubberville had last year, yes.

i'm not sure what the same coach who lead a mediocre iowa state did to right the ship down there, but you have to think turner gill could have gotten the same results.

I agree that Auburn would be a bad place to go. Chizdik may look good now, but teams in the SEC have unrealistic expectations and I suspect Chizdik will get chewed up and spit out. The SEC only has so much room for perennial powerhouses.

It is too bad Gill didn't end up at Syracuse. New York is his area so he would have been able to recruit rather well there. The Big East is a relatively weak conference and it is possible Gill could have transformed 'Cuse into a competitive, maybe even dominant, team in that conference. Then he would be a regular at BCS bowl games and a legendary coach at 'Cuse, in the Big East, and perhaps nationally.

Nonetheless, Turner Gill is a class act and all around awesome person. Too bad it was between him and Pelini, both coaches are great and were equally qualified for the 'skers, T.O had an impossible choice with no real wrong answer. I'll root for Buffalo as long as he is there.
