With the move to a 3-4 defense, I would guess we'd see at least one transfer from the DE position.

    Who I think transfers-

    RB- Taylor or Wilbon

I'm amazed that he is still here but I do know the guy is actually a class act and not the prima donna type who wants to quit if he doesn't play. I almost wouldn't mind it if he did just so he can go somewhere that will utilize the talent he clearly has. A fellow s sider. His lack of playing time is straight up insulting.

Hate to say that I kind of agree. I think he's our best ball carrier (hard to really say, he hasn't gotten much of a chance). I'll never understand the over emphasis they have put on pass blocking over actually running the ball. Ameer couldn't block a fourth grader coming off the edge, but nobody cared because he got yards when he touched the ball. Not saying he's Ameer, but I think he's severely under used.

I don't think anybody could be mad if Wilbon decided to transfer. Hope he doesn't, but you couldn't blame him.

In this offense there is no such thing as "an over emphasis on pass blocking". If a running back desires playing time in this offense he damn well better be able to pass block as well as run. It's part of the job description now.

Using Ameer is kind of a bad example because we weren't utilizing the same offense we are now. That said, Ameer would have done whatever it took to improve his pass blocking skills so he could get on the field and help his team.

the little nicknames are so lame...if you have to call yourself something you probably suck

The Scoring Explosion, We Backs, Pipeline, Blackshirts? :dunno

Other than "We Backs", I'm pretty sure all of those names were attributed to the team by people other than the players. Calvin and Derek came up with that moniker as I recall and it stuck.

  3.

obviously Langs will be airing it out a lot over the next couple years..........we are about to transition to a big play passing offense......hoping it works out.

Interesting to see if the air raid works in the B1G. One would think as long as you have a solid offensive line to protect the QB and give him time to make throws these speedster WRs will be able to get open. Of course having a solid RB to keep the defense honest would be good to have.

I think we'll have solid backs next year. Ozigbo and Bryant should make for a pretty potent 1-2 punch.

  4. There's no reason for them not to, at least at a place like Nebraska. Big time programs like ours practically print money we're so profitable, and that's a properly respectable gesture imo. Now, I think if that's just a carte blanche policy that has the potential to be a little absurd and to have families try to game the system, so I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of selection process similar to how financial aid works for prospective college students, but kids that come from disadvantaged upbringings should be served by the university by having the opportunity for their parents to see them play.

Some athletic departments really rake in the coin, like NU for example. However, most actually lose money and need funds from the University itself to keep going. How are those institutions going to pay for this? And there are FAR more of them than their are programs such as ours.

I'm not opposed to this suggestion if we can figure out how everyone can participate on a more or less equal level.

  5. Never put much stock in self-ascribed labels. Calling yourself "Lockdown U" the year after you were "Swiss Cheese U" was as laughable as "Hell in a Helmet." Now if somebody labels you, that is different. Otherwise is more like wishful thinking. Slogans can sometimes serve a purpose, like Unfinished business served to focus and motivate the '95 squad. Otherwise it is so much turd polishing.

I thought "Unfinshed Business" was the 94 squad in reference to their loss to Florida St in the final seconds in the January 1st '94 Orange Bowl.

I have no idea what this new guy will do and really have nothing to contribute.

I will say that I love when people give stats about another team in another league from long ago on a planet far far away and try to use that as evidence of what will happen here.

It is evidence! By adding strength of schedule, you make it more conclusive to all of D1 football. Banker had bad numbers in the past and see what we got.

Banker also had some decent defenses at Oregon St.

    Lets not forget that.

"We" are on a Nebraska football chat board...

And regulations here say that Nebraska football is the subject.

Hang in there and maybe you'll learn how this place works.

If the member is talking specifically about some other subject then hopefully he will clarify that.

The gif you used in your comment (#26) that I responded to ...

Is a "SAD' gif (sad11)... not a joke gif.

Maybe you need to learn the joke thingy better.

The way out of that hole is down, keep digging, definitely.

He didn't get ANY of it. Lol

  8.

... with the #4, 6, 1 and 15th ranked recruiting classes in the pipeline at ND.

Got to temper expectations a bit and give the guy time to implement before setting up these expectations.

I expect improvement in the D. It's not wrong to expect that.

I think we're going to see significant improvement in the defense. Just a hunch I have. :)

  9.

I hope Diaco hires someone that is familiar with his defense, so it will help in the transition.

I kinda figured Riley would be the one doing the hiring. I don't think I've ever heard of a Coordinator hiring his own staff.

The head coach will often work with their coordinators to bring in the position coaches. They at least will get input from the coordinator.

I would agree with that and I'll also say that I think this is FAR different from the Coordinators doing the hiring. By saying that, we are effectively saying he is the top dog in the decision making process and I'd be surprised if that was the case.

    Thanks for sharing.

That opinion about the future of Nebraska football...

Is certainly as relevant as any other opinion.

    Hold on just a minute...

He never said anything about football in that statement, let alone Nebraska football...just saying...

We really don't know for sure what he was talking about, maybe a massive asteroid strike like the one that killed the dinosaurs? biggrin1.gif

  12. Gotta give props to Riley for having the cahones to fire his longtime friend and coordinator, and showing that he's willing to take the steps to return this program to prominence. I don't see how this could possibly not be an upgrade from Banker... but even if things don't work out, it at least shows that Nebraska is willing to pay top-dollar to compete with the big boys.

I don't understand why this is a surprise. Riley told his coaches things would be different at NU, old habits had to die, higher expectations, etc etc. And he already fired Reed and Hughes. I admit to being surprised by the timing but not that Riley was willing to pull the trigger.

  14. 1. I think the butt-hurtedness of Banker might be a bit exaggerated. He was asked a question, he answered it the way he always does. I doubt their friendship ended. It was framed in terms of "regret". Yeah, he used harsh language, but coaches (esp. Defensive Coordinators in my experience) tend to do that, doesn't mean they'll feel like that forever.

    2. As fast as things get out a call probably had to have been made otherwise he would have heard it from someone else first and imho that would have been worse.

I will miss his honesty and personality. I wish him the best. If Cosgrove can get a job at a D1A school I'm sure Banker will be fine.

That's an interesting take and I can't say I find fault with it. In fact, I think it's pretty reasonable.

  15.

P.S. - Under Diaco, Notre Dame had the 2nd ranked defense in the country. They went from 80th two years prior, to 50th, to 2nd in the country.

I say give him a chance. After the last few Defensive coordinators, we can't go anywhere but up from here, right?

I'll give him a chance. Do the research on those ND recruiting classes he had to work with and you might temper those vibes a bit. I don't think we will have a #4, 6, 1 and 15th recruiting class anytime soon for him to work with.

Diaco was pretty good at Cincy under Brian Kelly, where I assume he wasn't getting top ten recruiting classes.

I guess I don't get the argument of "well, he had top recruiting classes at ND." He has experience at one of the biggest programs in college football, yet that is being held against him.

I get the argument. Some folks just can't seem to not drop turds in the punch bowl. They seemingly can't be happy w/o that stench in the air. I just don't know how they got to that point.

  16. I missed 12 pages of discussion on Banker's firing while in the hospital and I really don't feel like "binge reading" 12 pages. sad11.gif

That said, I'm neither pleased or displeased by his hiring, but it was a HUGE surprise to learn Banker had been fired. I know Banker had some decent defenses at Oregon St and I figured we'd see some big improvements in defensive play in his 3rd and 4th years here. I was willing to give him the time to get all his pieces in place.

I'll freely admit to being pretty stoked when it comes to his replacement and I certainly can't say I was "stoked" when Banker was hired. So there's that. biggrin1.gif

  17.

I blame the coaches for not using Tommy's strengths. He is a great option QB which totally went to waste and he's good at bullet passes with few reads. So, of course, they have him make a bunch of reads or throw touch passes. Biggest waste of talent I can remember at DONU.

He would not have held up the whole year (he didn't anyway). The what are we stuck with? Fife running the option

    That's a valid point.

Another thing to consider is this, do you stay with the old offense for the sake of one player, or do you switch gears and teach everyone the new offense? I think there can be pros/cons to both.

I personally think it's best for the long term health of the program to make the necessary changes immediately and take whatever lumps come that with the decision.

  18. Essentially I'm neither. I think he was probably one of the best options on the market for DC at this time. Poaching a high profile DC from another school takes time with a lower rate of success IMO. They typically get a counter offer and the process drags out. We needed a guy to hit the road immediately.

The jury will be out for a while with Diaco. All in all though it was a gutsy move by Reilly and I'm happy to see Banker get replaced. A 3-4 might also alleviate some of issues with our lack of true rush ends. Looks like he will be an upgrade as a recruiter over Banker as well. Hoping the next hire will be a stellar recruiter!

    Brandon made this move? biggrin1.gif
