  1. I can understand why Bo would feel slighted by the public statements of Harvey and Tom after the A&M game, but setting emotions aside, I think you have to ask if they really had a choice in the matter. The national backlash against Bo's behavior was quickly becoming a firestorm that reflected badly on NU. When the truth of Carl's camera-grabbing incident came out, it could very well have tempted the Big-12 to stick their noses in the situation. That would have been a mess of an entirely new degree.

Harvey's rebuke, though understandably tough for Bo to swallow, helped to diffuse the situation and probably headed-off any attempt by the Big-12 to stick it to Bo and/or Carl. A discussion with Bo in private only would not have done much to ease the media heckling that was going on.

I understand where you're coming from but if you revisit the timeline of media stories that were written from that weekend on, Perlman's public disapproval of Pelini gave the national media more ammo to pitch in their own 2 cents on the matter. Immediately after the game, no one outside of Texas and Nebraska was blowing up Pelini's sideline antics into headline news on a national scale. Once Perlman went public on Sunday afternoon, national writers were lining up just to pile it on.

Sure, maybe the Big 12 would've reprimanded Bo had Perlman not done so, but then again, maybe not? We'll never know. But I think Bo would've rather been publicly reprimanded by Beebe than his own administration.

  2. Am I the only one who noticed Taylor was moving around really well for most of the CCG? All I've heard is how gimpy he was. He wasn't limping until the 4th quarter after he started taking all those sacks.

Toradol shots work amazingly well. In the 4th quarter it probably started to wear off.

"I was trying to play with a high ankle sprain and a broken hand at the same time," South Carolina's senior center said.

So before a 2007 game, Anderson received a shot of Toradol, a painkiller that is the injection drug of choice in college football locker rooms before and during games, or immediately following wins and losses that hurt more than most people realize.

"I had a (Toradol) shot after the Wake Forest game," Clemson senior cornerback Crezdon Butler said. "I had a neck injury and we had a long bus ride home after the game. I knew I wouldn't be able to make it -- sleeping and relaxing -- without a shot."

Needles get stuck into Gamecocks, Tigers, Citadel Bulldogs and players from colleges all around the country every Saturday. It's not just Toradol, a brand-name painkiller and anti-inflammatory also known by the generic name ketorolac. Marcaine (or the generic bupivacaine) is an injectable drug used to numb specific body parts.

  3. Personally I am disgusted by the people that are claiming he threw the game, or he is transferring. We are making judgements about a KID from RUMORS. Anyways, yes after the game he was in tears. He was talking to one of his room mates shaking his head. I'm semi-good friends with one of his roommates, and have been around Taylor before. He is not a partying-stud, not out with 100's of girls every night, instead with his room mates or studying. He isn't cocky. He may not be a strong leader, but he is also young. As we give him time to grow, he will. What we need to do is support him, as we need to the whole team. I'm embarrassed for the fair weather fans.

  4. Just thought I would share this response I received from Tom Osborne regarding a email I sent pleading for him to fire Watson (Which I knew would not do anything but it felt good to write to him about it) Here it is:

Your e-mail is somewhat reminiscent of some that I received in the early 90’s wanting me to fire Charlie McBride and others on my staff. We then proceeded to win 60 games and lose 3 over the next 5 years and such talk subsided considerably. We have won 29 games in 3 years and may very well win 30. Very few coaching staffs have won 10 games a year in their first 3 years, and that would include some of the greats of the profession, such as Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, etc.

I wish you well. I thank you for caring.

    Best wishes,

    Tom Osborne

    Tom Osborne

    Athletic Director

    University of Nebraska

    One Memorial Stadium

    Lincoln NE 68588

    402-472-3011

    402-472-9675 fax

So he won’t fire Watson which we all knew so lets pray everyday that Watson gets a job elsewhere this offseason otherwise it will be another close but no cigar year next season.

    Go Big Red!!

It's ridiculous that you felt the need to write this email. Asinine actually.

Do you not think the Athletic Department is in his good hands?

If Tom Osborne feels a change should be made I am sure he would speak with Coach Pelini.

But ultimately that is a decision that Coach Pelini has to make. If your going to send an asinine email it should have been sent to Coach Pelini.

  5. For starters, when you criticize his throwing mechanics you have to have the common sense to know that he is a running quarterback and NOT a Joe Montana or Tom Brady. Damn. Scott Frost had an ugly shot put throw too, Tommie Frazier often forgot he was throwing a ball to a man and not firing a missle at Sadam Hussein. Jamal Lord_________. But these guys were running quarterback in a run first and 2nd offense in which we threw it cuz we had to, not because we wanted to, in order to pick up long yardage or loosen up the D. Our line is a power running line that lets face it is very effective in that plan, but they were just overwelmed sat. night by an over blitzing defense that could lock up man across cuz our only athletic talent at receiver capable of stretching out a D is hurt. Could you imagine the fallout if Osborne tried to have Frazier or Frost come out in the gun and throw 20-30 passes in a game with our awesome D when were gashing with the run time and time again. Well Osborne never did do that, but Watson did Saturday. he did not call to our strengths, when the game got tied at 20, he started calling like we were down by 3 td's. it's ridiculous and it's happened time and time again.

    +1,000!

    Great post!

Where was the play action passes with a run/pass optionn for Martinez?

    Play to the kid's strengths.

If you watch this video we ran a play action pass to McNeil that Taylor looked great in!

The play action pass comes at the 1:47 mark:

    http://www.huskers.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?&db_oem_id=100&id=738883&DB_MENU_ID=&SPSID=&SPID=&DB_OEM_ID=100

    Watson NEVER ran it again!!!!??????

  6. Yea yea I know he is only a "freshman" but he looked totally clueless and many times all year in the passing game! His footwork is pathetic and he "locks" in on one receiver! He is growing but last night he should have been growing from the sidelines.

I am not so sure why Bo thinks sitting him on the bench is going to destroy his confidence, what happened last night is a confidence destroyer.

Zac Lee if we were going to "throw" the ball gives us the best chance to win, period!

Would Cody have looked or played worse? He has had problems in some appearances but a change was needed on offense, badly.

I guess I am just not as enamored with a "wounded" QB as Bo and Wats are.

We are playing big games trying "not to lose" and that outlook on offense has not worked for the past 2 years. Our defense can not always make the plays, it is expecting way too much from them.

Last night was just another steps backwards on offense!

Scott Frost looked "clueless" against Arizona State when Nebraska lost 19-0.

The next year Husker "Fans" booed Scott Frost.

Then he won a National Championship.

Get a grip. He is only a Redshirt Freshman.

He learned a ton from that tough loss and will only get better.

  7. The guys a head case, he transfered twice in high school because he could'nt get along with teammates.

That is a bunch of junk. YOU are full of it and don't know what you are talking about.

First of all Taylor's biological Mom abandoned the family when he was 13. His Father went into a bad depression and Taylor stepped up and helped take care of his little brothers.

The first move was because his Father got a new job. Taylor had to move with his Dad.

The second move was because Taylor's Step-Mom was sick and put on bed rest during her pregnancy. Taylor's family moved so he could take his little brothers to school that was closer to Centennial High School!

By then, he had transferred to Centennial High School in Corona, Calif.,

so he could take his younger brothers to a nearby school when his stepmother

was put on bed rest while pregnant with twins. That fall he led Centennial to

an undefeated season and state Division I championship by passing for 2,994 yards

and 28 touchdowns and rushing for 750 yards and 12 more scores.

Grow up and act like Nebraska Fans. You guys are disgusting!

  8. Martinez was playing hurt, and was playing hard. He played like a freshman, that's all. McNeill also gave him a couple pats on the helmet at one point in the game.

Just stop. Everybody should be hoping like crazy that Martinez is coming back, because the kid could be an OUTSTANDING QB.

  9. Couldn't find the rumor mill so I posted it here.

The following is an email I just received:

T-mart transferring at the end of the season. And that

he was actually suspended last game.

    ---

Two or three different sources all report a general version of events as this:

    1. Bo's meltdown against Taylor on Saturday night. All agree it was over a

cell phone. When Taylor was injured, he was taken to the A&M locker room

because that is where the X-Ray facility was. After being X-rayed and cleared,

rather than hurry and return to the team, Taylor left the medical staff to walk

all the way over to NU's locker room, retrieve his cell phone, and have a

conversation with his father. All told, Taylor and his dad waste 10-20

minutes. Bo is pissed on two different levels. One, he needs the kid back in

the game and he's wasting time. Two, Bo has a very explicit rule about cell

phones in the locker room and on the field. Evidently, Taylor has been busted

for this kind of thing in the past.

Taylor comes back out on the field and the medical staff informs Bo of

Taylor's activities. You saw the conversation that ensued on national TV. Not

pleasant. There are several 'lip-reader' interpretations out there. All have

to do with a phone call.

    2. Upon returning to Lincoln, the next day finds Taylor's dad having shown up

on campus. He's pissed. This has happened with Taylor's dad in the past and Bo

pretty much hates dealing with it. They have a meeting with Taylor, Taylor's

dad, and Pelini. Pelini explains that Taylor has violated team rules and will

be suspended for a game. Evidently, Taylor's dad completely loses it, stating

that it is their intention to transfer from NU to somewhere else and that

calling it a 'suspension' will keep teams from wanting his son. Bo says, "Fine,

call it whatever you want, but your son isn't playing on Friday." The meeting

doesn't end well. Rumors swirl like crazy Sunday night that Taylor has quit the

team. Technically, he hasn't, but there is enough truth in there to know that

    something has happened.

    3. The next day, Taylor shows up with a walking boot on his foot to

practice. Him and his dad want him to wear the boot so that people will believe

that he is not playing this week because of his ankle, not because he's

'suspended'. As a 'screw you' to Pelini, however, Taylor wears the boot on the

wrong foot, causing all sorts of confusion and strange questions from the

press. Taylor, in his odd way, thinks this is all some kind of funny joke.

As this little stunt makes its way through the team, former players such as

Phillip Dillard start piping up via Twitter and Facebook, describing their

thoughts on Taylor and his established history of stunts like this, neglect for

team rules, his over-obsessive daddy, etc. Phil calls on the Unity Council to

dismiss Martinez from the team. Speculation is that current players are the

    source of Dillard's anger.

What the 'inside' people are reporting is this: Taylor Martinez is gone after

this season. All agree this is the case. He may not play another game for

Nebraska. Taylor wants to be gone, Taylor's dad wants him gone, and Bo and the

rest of the team want him gone. Everyone within the program, from the coaches

to the players, are tired of his prima donna attitude, helicopter dad, and

general lack of respect for all things Nebraska. The 'suspension' will never be

publicized as such - but that's what it is according to others.

I hope you don't post this kind of crap again.

  10. A respected poster on rivals is claiming that the email originated on Orangebloods.com, so you can imagine the kind of embellishment that must have been added there.

In this video you can clearly see Taylor Martinez practicing with the ones.

    http://www.huskers.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?id=738414&afid=10912

He looks ok. Don't see him run or cut though.

Honestly he doesn't look that OK, he did not look like he was taking those snaps at game tempo at all. Very relaxed, very little movement and footwork. I'm no expert though so maybe it is just me.

And if he was practicing with the ones, I didn't see evidence for it in this video. They showed two clips at the end there of Taylor throwing passes. The first clip, the ball was thrown to #1 Khiry Cooper, with #85 KC Hyland also appearing in the route. The second clip soon after showed D-Tray #27 in the backfield with Taylor; the pass was thrown to Kinnie, with SJB #83 also in the picture. I think there's some rotating around during the practices among all available QBs though, between the various units and maybe some rotation with the other players (as Kinnie/SJB would imply, but who knows - I don't know who the other starting WR will be this week unless it's #9 again). So I don't know if Taylor not working with the ones would mean anything right now.

    Cool vid, though.

The fact that he is able to practice reveals that he is "ok". Without seeing him run there is no way to tell 100% how effective he is. Maybe Nebraska did this on purpose to throw off Oklahoma. :)

The second pass was completed to Brandon Kinnie, so I assumed he was with the ones. I watched it again and saw Tray in the backfield with him, but I also believe there is alot of rotation in practice.

  11. Not that I have anything against Taylor personally, but even if all of those stories are true, they aren't exactly counter-arguments to what we've heard. All of those things can easily be a part of one person's personality.

While these stories do not excatly contradict the bad stories we have heard, they do seem unlike the arrogant guy the bad stories have made him out to be. Great to hear and I'm glad he is there for the fans when they need him to be.

    Exactly.

  12. I know there was a few people in this thread that had stated that Bo and Frost do not see eye to eye. I haven't (unless I missed it) seen the response to the question of why they don't? Did something happen or what is the deal here? Really curious if somebody knows.

All I know is that when Frost was playing for the Green Bay Packers Bo Pelini was the linebackers coach.

So, when Frost went in to Pelini's office, to inquire about working for him, Pelini and Frost already had some kind of history.

I just think Coach Pelini already had his staff lined up and it was nothing personal against Frost.

  13. I think this post gives a little bit of perspective on Taylor Martinez.

I have seen alot of people making assumptions about Taylor's character.

Well here is a positive story about the kid.

    http://www.huskermax.com/vbbs/showthread.php?11147-I-saw-TM-this-morning...

...leaving North Stadium Complex at about 10AM. Took the family down to show them the trophies before we headed back to CO.

I could tell it was him by the way he was walking. This kid is in some REAL pain folks. I assume he was coming out after getting some treatment but he could hardly walk without obvious pain. He looked like he needed crutches.

I am not sure why he even suited up yesterday and I will be shocked if he is even remotely close to being ready for the game in Dallas.

H-D's thread got me thinking and I wanted to relay this next part to you all. My family was standing by the TO statue and TM was heading for his car. He was just about to get in when another family' date=' getting out of their car saw him and asked him to pose for a photo. He didn't have to, but this kid gimped across the parking lot, mustered up a grin for the fans, allowed them to take several photos, then signed about a half dozen autographs before heading back to his car. There were no reporters, no video cameras, just TM and some fans. He looked like any other 19/20 yr old Husker student athlete. From what I saw, he represented very well what we all believe in.

I wanted to relay this story because I think there are a ton of misperceptions about this young man floating around cyberspace. I think we all could stand to cut him some slack and send some prayers his way for a speedy recovery. As good as CG played last night, NU really does need TM!!!

  14. Its time we fire this dude. We've lost too many games these past two years where receivers dropping easy passes played a big factor. There is no way you can tell me that Ted Gilmore is the best WR coach that Nebraska can get. Cut our losses ASAP, fire his a$$ right after we win the Fiesta Bowl

    Coaches don't drop passes.

We also have some of the best blocking receivers in the country.

At Nebraska it is actually just as important to be a great blocker.

Coach Pelini promoted Coach Gilmore to Assistant Head Coach in 2008.

He is also the Recruiting Coordinator and doing a fantastic job.

Coach Pelini is not going to be firing anyone.

  15. If Shawn Watson were to get the boot who would you predict would take his place? My husband and I were wondering about that and he wondered how Scott Frost would do in that position. Scott is at Oregon right now. Would he be a valid candidate?

    -ladyhawke~

    Frost is not a candidate.

He hasn't even been an Offensive Coordinator yet!

  16. I have never, nor will I ever root for Texas. I don't think it does much to tarnish our reputation, the whole country watched us deserve to win that game even without fielding an offense. We dominated in our bowl game, which received plenty of press and attention, too.

    :yeah

If Texas wins another National Championship it will only help them in recruiting. We compete with them for recruits. With Turner Gill at Kansas now it's going to get alot more competitive for Texas recruits.

Texas practically has their pick of recruits now and if they win another National Championship it will make it that much harder for Nebraska.

Nebraska destroyed Arizona. The National Media has been having a love fest over Suh. We have gotten tons of positive press.

Noone is going to think Nebraska is a worse team if Texas loses to Alabama.

I despise Texas and always want them to lose.

    Go Big Red!

  17. The better question would be: should Barney stay or go? Most of the offensive problems this year were caused by poor OL play. Watson's play calling was suspect at times, but I believe it was because he was trying to do something or create something despite the poor OL play.

Coach Cotton has had to alot of shuffling of the offensive line with injuries this year.

Hickman has played hurt all year.

    Hickman battling through injuries

Offensive line coach Barney Cotton had some good things to say about his gutsy senior center, who's set an ideal example while battling through countless injuries.

First it was an ankle for Jacob Hickman. Then a bruise. Cotton's sure that his starting center probably has more ailments that he's not sharing.

But Hickman, who played his final home game Saturday, has been a gamer, Cotton said.

“He's still battling through some stuff,” Cotton said. “The guy doesn't miss a beat. He's one of our most intelligent players. (I've) been really proud of his efforts.”

Joneses keep plugging the Husker line

Cotton usually tries to get offensive tackle D.J. Jones some playing time as a reserve in every game. He didn't anticipate using the junior so much Saturday, though.

But starting right tackle Marcel Jones left Saturday's game with an ankle injury suffered on the third offensive play from scrimmage. So D.J. Jones replaced him and played the rest of the way.

There was no dropoff, Cotton said.

“I told him I was so proud of him — for him to just go in there, never miss a beat, never change any of the calls,” Cotton said. “(He) did a good job in pass protection as well. He's really battled all year.”

The extent of Marcel Jones' injury is still unknown.

Marcel Jones and DJ Jones both played hurt this year and Marcel is only a sophomore.

We lost Javario Burkes before the season even started.

We also have the following offensive lineman redshirting this year: Nick Ash (6-5, 270), Jesse Coffey (6-7, 300), Brent Qvale (6-7, 330), and Jeremiah Sirles (6-6, 310).

The offensive line played a great game last night!

I was proud of our big boys and I look forward to next season.

  18. I'm not the biggest Cotton supporter in the world but you have to take all the stats from the past with a grain of salt...

When Barney came to ISU, Iowa State was coming off a 2-10 year where they totally sucked

    2003 Stats: Rush Offense - 91st Pass Offense - 94th Total Offense - 109th

In 2004, Cotton had a freshman QB (Bret Meyer) and a freshman RB (Stevie Hicks) to depend on. Even so, Hicks gained over 1000 yards rushing and Meyer put together a good year behind decent protection as Iowa State improved to 7-5 with a trip to a bowl game

    2004 Stats: Rush Offense - 73rd Pass Offense - 79th Total Offense - 91st

When 2005 rolled around, Hicks went down with an injury early in the season, forcing Cotton to depend almost exclusively on the passing game. Meyer (not the sharpest knife in the QB drawer some times) still managed to have a good year due to the emergence of Todd Blythe but he tended to tuck the ball and run at the first sign of pressure. ISU went 7-5 and again went bowling

    2005 Stats: Rush Offense - 96th Pass Offense - 37th Total Offense - 76th

Finally, in 2006, Hicks again went down with an early injury and to add to the offensive woes, Blythe sat out half the season with a viral infection. Without reliable offensive weapons to turn to, Meyer took to his feet a lot, leading to a multitude of sacks and tackles for loss. 4 of the 5 O-linemen that began the season as starters were lost at various times during the season forcing Cotton to patch together whoever was available from week to week. The Clones ended up at 4-8 with no bowl, after which HC McCarney and his staff were let go. Cotton's kid was just getting ready to start his senior year at Ames High so Cotton opted to stay in the area in order to let his son finish his final year of high school

    2006 Stats: Rush Offense - 99th Pass Offense - 44th Total Offense - 81st

Cotton was able to come to a school with a meager budget for recruiting and improvements, take a young team that lacked as much talent as most of the opposing Big 12 teams and push them to two bowl games in three years after which Chizek came in and sent the team in a tailspin with his horrible head coaching. Injuries, especially to experienced backs, are what were Cotton's undoing at ISU...and the same thing appears to be the problem at NU.

    Fantastic freaking post!

A very fair assessment and the kind of perspective anti-Cotton people need.
