  1. Doesn't matter what "style" of offense NU decides to attempt to run as long as Barney Fife is running the OLine. Any style will look the same, a clusterf#$k. Until things are shored up in the offensive trenches, it won't matter. Hell NU could survive just fine keeping Wats as long as Barney Rubble isn't holding down the helm with the big uglies.

    YEP!

  2. The offense was terrible in the second half of the season. The offense should be better at the end of the season, all units should be. This season has been a big disappointment. It was Bo's 3rd year, the 3rd year is when a great coach turns the corner and wins championships. I love Bo. If Bo keeps the staff together and continues to get these results Bo may not get a chance to change the staff. Bo could be fired himself. So here are my evaluations.

Watson has been a terrible play caller. He may have been handcuffed by Bo, but it was Watson who recruited Cody Green and to a lesser extent Zac Lee. I dont think he had much to do with recruiting T-Mart, but my point is he chose these QB's and he needs to take responsibility if they miss. He has reconstructed the offense in the middle of '09 at Bo's request and again to begin '10. So in fairness this has been his first season running a new offense. I believe he is a good coach, but it's not like he can be demoted. It would be a risk for Bo to think Watson could turn this offense around.

Gilmore is a bum. This guy does little for our recruiting. He turns a talent like Niles Paul into a punch line. Kinnie has produced, but as a JUCO how much credit can Gilmore get for that? Guys like Guillen, Cooper, and Enuwa who show promise in practice or games are unable to see the field. Chris Brooks can't get on the field at NU, but get hard looks from the NFL. I will stop ranting now.

Barney Cotton is OK in my opinion. I am frustrated with the sacks. I think the run game really improved this year. In Cotton's defense I will point out the talent level of the '10 OL. Caputo was a walk-on. Sirles is a 3-star RS-FR. Ricky Henry is a 3-star JUCO. DJ a 3-star. Keith Williams a 4-star. The OL depth was pretty thin when Barney showed up, and I expect the OL to improve as guys like A-Rod get into the mix.

Ron Brown bleeds husker red, gotta love this guy. He is an asset to recruiting efforts. It would be hard to get rid of this guy.

Tim Beck should be the OC next year right. He seems to be a bright young mind. He is a great recruiter. He has no OC experience, and has never called plays at the college level. There is not much more he can do for himself as a position coach, and one would think he will get a chance to be a OC somewhere if that is his desire. I dont know if he should be OC, but it would suck to lose him.

So what does Bo do? What would Tom do? I believe Tom is tutoring Bo, and will have a hand in this. I dont think Tom ever fired a coach. It eventually turned out OK for him, but Tom's AD through much of that tough time was Devany. Bo will be HC as long as Tom is AD, but how long is that? We all know how a 9-3 coach can be fired by a new AD. Im ranting again.

What should be done? Promote Tim Beck and bring some young coaches into the mix? Give the reins of the offense to a new OC who will change the system? Stick with everyone on the staff and give them year 2 to develop their system?

Im sorry if I am too long. Please no mention of names for new offensive coaches, they have all been stated in previous threads. I would like to hear opinions of the current coaches.

You are on your own on that opinion, in my mind Cotton needs to be the first one to go he is TERRIBLE!

Thank you! Cotton sucks! Should not be here in the first place.

  3. I know that most Blame Wats, and I carry no brief for the guy, but I am not certain he really is at the heart of the trouble and changing the name of the OC will solve things. I believe we have a world class defensive coordinator that is still not comfortable as a head coach either understanding or developing "his" offensive scheme. I think we have had an offensive direction by committee and of course is only my guessing. Watson prefers a more wide open passing attack with perhaps a 50 50 mix. TO I would bet has strongly suggested to Bo with Bo wisely given his background on D, that Bo should adopt a run heavy offense with emphasis on the option.

Using that scenario, I can envision Watson being told of the direction Bo had chosen to go. Recall last year that Watson it was reported had told T Gabbert that they were going away from an offense featuring the passing game. I think that was not his decision.

So they cobbled together an offense around a running qb, TM, not by Watson's choice, but because he was told to do it. Blocking is changed, receivers have a limited role and it comes down to timing and making the right option read AND keeping the one qb we had that could run it sound. The a chillies heel came when TM was hurt or a D could stop the read option. We has a terribly impotent offense then. So we try a wildcat a lot and basically make it up.

I truly believe this quite possibly could be the result of Bo not understanding offense and thinking with or without TO's imput he could design a ball control rushing offense to compliment a D with Suh in 2009 and be very effective. So you end up manufacturing an offense to please the HC on the fly. You don't necessarily believe in it. The head coach doesn't understand the limitation or the problem of building an offense with one qb that can run it, but backed by an option guru from the old days who is AD, insists on implementation.

So now we are master of nothing on offense, Jack of no trades, and likely back to a drawing board. Whether hiring a new OC will change anything or not I don't know. I do believe that part of the problem is that Bo doesn't really understand building an offense. There is a big difference in being a coordinator and being a head coach. Hopefully Bo is learning and regardless who is the OC he will know when to intervene and when to let the coordinator roll. Not an easy job.

Last year, it appeared Bo wanted to start Cody. When Cody played well like a true freshman, Lee was inserted back into the starting lineup. My understanding is that Watson has been told what he will do and who he will play. From what I'm told, his role on the team this year has been a lot more like a guidance counselor than an offensive coordinator. It's unlikely Watson will return next year. However, I'm of the belief that very little will change from this year with Watson being the only one not returning. It will be a lot like putting chrome wheels on a ford pinto. The problems go much deeper.

If true, this doesn't bode well for the future. WTF is really going on within this program?

  4. fumbles, not executing, fumbles...oh and did i mention fumbles???

So we all want to start over YET again on offense?

Great...get ready for the beat down that is the Big10 schedule we have next year.

An offensive line that can block would be nice, don't you think?

Why fire Watson all the freaking time. gets old. Fire him. then what?

and how many, if any recruit could we lose if we do? What are the negatives if SW is shown the door?
