  1. Is anyone disappointed that we didn't give him a shot in the CCG to kick a 62 yd fg towards the end of the game after our QB took a sack that knocked us out of fg range? He was booming the ball that game, plus it is indoors and on turf. I just feel he was underutilized a bit this year. A Kicker like him doesn't come around very often.

  2. you do what you need to do to survive, especially when you are a a broke college kid. Pryor sold things that legally belonged to him to help his mother (according to his high school coach). no crimes were committed.

I do not understand the NCAA.

Cam Newton asside, what they did is not allowed - and if permitted it would open up the doors to pay players through merchandise and other products. If you knew that every time Oklahoma won the Big12 South the Big12 south ring was valued at $35,000 and you could sell that...but nebraska rings run around $500 which college would you choose? Before long USC would be giving $100,000 conferenc championship rings, and $50,000 participation awards to all their players.

Why do you think this is ok?

Athletes are dominated, managed, and controlled; do not receive a wage commensurate with their contribution to economic returns; are sometimes mistreated physically and mentally; are denied the rights and freedoms of other citizens; and have no real democratic recourse in an unjust system.

    My link

You read all those conspiracy theorist emails that get forwarded around too huh?

    ???

It's not a conspiracy theory. It's just a straightforward essay on the dark side of college sports. It's pretty tough to deny the overtones of slavery. Seriously, I love college football, but every time I'm in Memorial Stadium there are about 30 seconds where I remove myself from that atmosphere and think something to the extent of, "This must be what Romans were like watching their prisoners fight to the death in the Coliseum." It's kind of disturbing...

But these college players are not required to play. It is a choice that they chose to make.

  3. RUT ROAH!

Pryor will go to the draft and wont stick around for the suspension IMO.

That's what I was thinking. Pryor will turn pro and never face the punishment. I can't believe they are not suspended for the Bowl Game. Must be too much money on the line to suspend them for a BCS bowl game. What a bunch of hypocritical asshats the NCAA is.

  4. I understand that most on the board are focusing on the offense and players/coaches....AND so have I...

BUT... I truly believe that a defensive "non-call" played a MAJOR role in the game. On 3rd and 24, why didn't Carl dial up a blitz of some kind? I am a coach (didn't say good one - ha), and I understand the "cautious" let them catch it underneath with plenty of defenders to tackle theory..

but, in that circumstance, if we bring heat, NO WAY does any WR have time to get more than 10 yds downfield before Jones has to release ball...That leave us 10 yds to make tackle before it gets close enough for Stoops to go for it. Instead, Jones held the ball for almost 6-7 seconds, allowing a deep drag route to open up at 15 yds, and then we didn't tackle.

I really though he should have put someone in Jones' face...He has been know to make HORRIBLE decisions with pressure and he was deep in his own territory..who knows if he makes a poor throw, could be pick.

Im not going to put the loss on the d, but that 22/23 yard gain on 3rd down was killer.. I knew if they gained significant yardage, stoops was going to go for it. It seemed we did well when we blitzed the qb, except when we left the rb open out of the backfield. Idk, I figured we could hold them to a gain of 15 or so yards on that play.

  5. My views, feel free to disagree...

    1) The vitriol directed at Taylor is over the top. Cut his scholarship fund? Taylor sucks? Freshman had a rough game, but that's unmerited IMO. Another example of hype becoming a player's downfall. More moderate voices since the beginning of the year nailed the situation for what it is: Taylor is an athlete at QB, who brings explosion and the big play to the offense while being completely raw as a passer, and prone to cold spells, and extreme cases of nerves. I felt Taylor should not have started, and that's why. But Taylor doesn't suck either...and attitude or not, shouldn't deserve the kind of hate he is all of a sudden getting. I guess I did become a fan of the guy over the games, even while acknowledging that he's a potential bomb waiting to explode and implode the team. Which is a separate issue.

    2) Defense: you got owned. 17 of Oklahoma's 23 points at least were directly caused by three huge plays given up by the secondary. Cassidy, Hagg, and pretty much everyone (I guess it was Dennard's man). These are good players in a very good defensive system. But these three plays are more costly than I could even begin talking about. There was a lot of good defense today, and a lot of sharpness from Jones with his pinpoint passes. But there was also some giving up big runs up the middle (DL?...) and those three ugly, inexcusable plays. You cannot expect to go against a quality offensive team and make THREE miscues like that, and still expect to win. FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY FIVE YARDS today by the Sooners. I will not call for anyone's heads though. But just think about that. 4-5-5.

    3) Starting Taylor. Watson called a great game early. The fourth down playaction was ballsy and masterful. Then Taylor loses his cool and doesn't regain it for the rest of the game. Taylor was not prepared to play today IMO. I don't know what to say since we are so thin at QB and Green was even more scary of an option. But this decision to start Taylor, which is Bo's as well as Watson's, should be something to be talked about.

    4) Watson and the Last Drive. We scored 20 points in the first half and looked on track to do more than our fair share against the Sooners. Indeed, probably most felt if we could put this number up on Oklahoma, we'd win (but see #2: defense). At some point you got to commit to Burkhead/grinding it out. Why am I so defensive of Watson in spite of 2009? Because I loved and embrace the 2009 philosophy, which Bo directed. Shut it down on offense, grab a lead and hang the heck onto it. Keep it out of the realm of killer mistakes, and I don't care if we average 3 yards a carry as long as we are chewing clock and getting a field goal here or there.

So WHY, when the game is on the line, we have the ball thanks to Rex on our own 40, with just 20 yards at minimum to go, and nearly 2 minutes on the clock to get there, do we not run it? Rex had success in the Wildcat and we have enough time to average 3 yards a clip and still get to field goal range with a break or two. So we throw a quickslant on first down, fine. But on 2nd and medium, after seeing how Taylor has reacted to pressure ALL DAY, and really, Taylor's dancing around into linemen in the pocket has been a chronic occurence all freaking year. When we can rely on any of our multiple ways to attack the defense on the ground to put us in third and short, why do we call something that has ANY chance at all of putting us into 3rd and 16? There's no criticism on the two plays after that because we were desperate anyways. It's these first two plays that killed us.

There, now I know what it's like to play armchair OC. I don't think Watson should be fired, for the usual reasons. Just like I don't think the defensive coaches should be fired. But I think this is fair criticism of a couple of very costly decisions.

    5) Bo. This goes right with the above. I loved 2009 because of the conservative approach. Why did Bo go away from that today? It was especially evident on the last game, unless Watson went rogue on Bo, which I doubt, because it was evident on Bo's approach through the day. He did go balls out on this one, which is to his credit, but honestly there were some very dangerous decisions there that could have cost us the game at multiple times. The 4th and 1 was surprising, but it worked. That doesn't mean it wasn't hella dangerous. The fake punt - also surprising, and I'm sad I didn't get to see it. But also EXTREMELY dangerous. We are talking Les Miles dangerous or CU 2008 dangerous if we don't make those 4 yards, late in the game and down 3 in our own territory. And of course the end of the game.

Since when did Bo have little faith in our defense? I suppose this game gave him no reason to have faith. Still, I really believe going away from the 2009 approach when the chips were down was a questionable decision. Using it opened up Watson to a ton of unfair criticism, but using it the way it was used in the 2nd half of this game opens up Watson to a lot of valid criticism.

    6) Misc things on playcalling...the zone read was fine IMO. Not with Taylor, though, after the first few drives. But with Rex out of the Wildcat. All those Wildcat plays were pretty good. Although I would say the throws were very dangerous. Rex should have thrown the second one away (or sooner), and the first one was off target. Good to give them something to think about though. The one that failed was Mike Caputo's bad snap that resulted in a fumble. Throwing the ball with Taylor quickly became a completely untenable option, and yet we stuck with it. I like showing faith to your players, I think it enables them to succeed. But this is a situation where no faith was deserved.

Your rant was too long and boring to read in full.

The loss was not on the D. Yes they may have given up quite a few yards, but 4 turnovers assisted the OU O.

TM has no clue of pocket presence. Of the 7 or so sacks he took tonight, 5 were preventable if he would have made the decision to tuck and run or throw the ball away.

Watson's play calling was piss poor to say the least.

Where was the Power running game. Seemed to work the very few times it was ran.

We do not have very good recievers. Kinnie and McNeil are good, but McNeil is slow and an undersized TE. Good hands and a good route runner, but not a threat. We didn't have a deep threat all game. There were opportunities for shots deep but the personel wasn't there.

All in all this game falls on the O and the Offensive coaches.

  6. Nobody likes being cheated. He knew what was happening and it would piss anyone off. The worst thing about last night was yelling at Martinez. I think everyone can empathize with his temper toward the refs to some extent, but screaming at your own player is what looked bad.

When did society become so soft that yelling at a player is offensive. You don't think college fb players get yelled at? We don't and will never know what Martinez's actions were that caused the yelling. Bo seems to have a camera folling him all game long and the television stations love to show replays of Bo's rants, but they can't show replays of penalties so the fans can decide for themselves if they were good or bad calls.

  7. its the two penalties that are more mind boggling than the 16. still though, two personal fouls on E-Mart on kickoff? The refs are watching his every move and making bogus flags for whatever he does. two times our team was flagged for DOUBLE personal fouls. 30 yards for Cotton on one play. 15 yards on two "half the distance to the goal" personal fouls. the roughing the passer was an unspeakably horrific call. this reffing crew has reffed three of our games: Texas, ISU, and A&M. we have been flagged 32 times for 293 yards (take out the 16 today and thats 8 per game in the other two which isn't awful). here's the crazy stat. the opponents have combined for 9 flags for 109 yards. are team really that good at being disciplined against us?

Cotton was flags where legit -- one was for the kick and the other was for what he said after the pile was up. They did not show it but you her brent say now there are flags all over the place. He should have been ejected!

And the A&M player that was grabbing his nuts should have been ejected as well was suspended next week. But I'm sure the Big 12 will excuse his actions.

  8. This is the only game I can remember where penalties were not shown on replay on tv. As mentioned some were warranted, many were not. Penalties caused a guaranteed 6 point swing. One penalty took us out of fg range and Osbourne's late hit gave a&m a 1st down after a 3rd down stop. That drive resulted in the game winning fg.

  9. Watson's playcalling was mediocre at best. The play action pass off the zone read fake was open all night. I can't believe he didn't call it. Their db's were crashing hard on the run. We've ran the play before. uuuhhhh. So frustrating. Please hire him Colorado!!!

  10. The officiating is really getting out of hand and has me legitimately concerned it will cost us the Big 12 title. The more I think about it, the more real it seems that the deck is stacked against us winning the Big 12. I say this because you really think the Big 12 wants to hear the following every Sat. next season from joe college football fan..."you know the Big 12 sucks...they lost their best team Nebraska and Texas is no good anymore...man, what a weak conference!". Plus if NU wins the Big 12 it will also be said..."Man the Big 10 is a great conference...they already had some top teams plus they added the best team/only BCS team from the Big 12...what a conference!". That will be the perception next season and that is the precise reason the Big 12 needs to ensure that Okie State, Mizzou, OU get through over us. They desperately need this now that Texas is out this year. Don't be surprised if a lower ranked OU or Okie State beats us in the CCG. I just have a bad feeling about this.

Don't forget that the Big 12 exit fee withheld from NU would be reduced by 500k if NU represents the conference in a BCS game. $500K is a good reason to have some calls go against NU.

  11. That's what I figured. Looks like I'll be shelling out dough one way or another. This sucks. I don't recall not getting a televised game here in Denver.

It's going to happen more often once NU is in the B10 and CU is in the P12. We won't have anymore PPV games, but we're going to get the short end of the ABC regional programming. I suggest switching to Comcast internet. They aren't any better than Qwest, but they have espn3.com.

Ahh yes, but I have the Big Ten Network on Direct TV. That should allow me to watch all the games next year. I hate Comcast anyway. Not that Qwest is any better. It is like trying to decide which you would rather have, hemorrhoids or poison ivy.

Probably end up buying a week of gameplan.

Then to Fox n Hound next week for PPV.

  12. You also missed the fact that every game gives you a B****** message

If you go to espn3.com and look at the games on Sat., you'll see a click next to it that says "(subject to B******)". If you click that link, it will tell you whether the game is blacked out in your area or not. I'm in Denver and it's not blacked out here.

Anyone know how to get ESPN 3 through Qwest? ESPN 3 says Qwest is not a supported ISP.

espn3.com works on all college campuses if that helps you. Otherwise you're going to need to find a bar where it's playing, or a friend that has a supported ISP. Or you can buy the game on ESPN Gameplan, but I think it's in SD not HD.

  15. Dropped passes cost us the game.

    Not the playcalling.

    Not the QB play.

    Not the onside kick.

    Not the officials.

    Not the early fumble.

    Not the lackluster defense.

Dropped passes cost us the game. Let's be clear about that.

Agree, but you have to admit the refs were questionable at best

maybe but i felt like this was the least we had ever been screwed by refs in a nu vs. texas game.

Well, the fact that we were penalized 9 - 4 or whatever it was. The totally screwed us on the Prince PI nad missed 2 PI's against our receivers, plus a couple of holding calls. The spot on the last 3rd down was absurd. the back was down 1-1/2 - 2 yards before the first down. The refs screwed us as best they could without making it totally obvious. Not to mention, the catch by #25 that they called incomplete.

  16. 1. No matter how wide open you are, dropping the ball makes you look foolish

    2. Shawn Watson may have been possessed by the spirit of Bill Callahan for a better part of 2 quarters

    3. Hang time isn't important during onside kicks

    4. Roy Helu can be added to the "can't produce against good defenses" list. He seemed to be looking for a place to fall.

disagree there. He produced well against OU and VT last year. Two very stout D's.

  17. I know times change, but it's extremely rare for a guy to leave Nebraska early. The only guys who left early that I can think of off the top of my head are Johnny Mitchell and Brandon Jackson. Anyone else?

Recently Lucky stayed, Suh stayed (and if Suh didn't go, why would Crick, Dennard, etc?) and Prince stayed. Leaving early isn't something I'm too worried about.

Josh bullocks left a year early, the year after his 10pics and was coached by Bo.

Okay. NU guys do leave early sometimes. Especially if they have a twin brother who they don't want to compete with in the draft.

And we bring in a new coach and DC who fundamentally rip apart what Bullocks knew was a sound defensive system. Bullocks is a good point, but his reasons for leaving would be vastly different than Dennard's or Crick's.

Derek Brown, Calvin Jones, LP, Ahman Green all left early. It is pretty common for good RB's to leave early.

I'd believe Riola, Fonoti and Fabian Washington left early.

  18. You know last week I only saw one post where some guy went nuts about never being a nebraska fan again and other then that there was nothing crazy. Why is it a "meltdown" to talk about the reasons you lost a game? Good gawd it's like we're all supposed to be rosy and smiley no matter what happens in life.

"Life's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get."

  19. Why does the board send an email after every response to your response? Why doesn't it follow its own guidelines...

"There may be more replies to this topic, but only 1 email is sent per board visit for each subscribed topic. This is

to limit the amount of mail that is sent to your inbox.

Now I only have 485 emails to go through.

I have voiced my opinion on this before, and nothing has changed. is anything going to happen t his time?
