  1. If you can find the recruiting statistics let me know, but i would venture to say that NU didn't have a top 5 recruiting class in 92-97.  They did however have great football teams.

    1992 28

    1993 14

    1994 20

    1995 8

    1996 4

    1997 19

I got this from SI.com a while back. That is NU's recruiting ranks in the time period in question. Not exactly bottom of the barrell recruits, but I understand what you are getting at.

By no means is it the bottom of the barrel. Very above averge. Look at the recruiting ranks of the classes that contributed most to the 94 & 95 NC teams.

    92 28

    93 14

    94 20

    Definately not top 5.

On the other hand. the 97 NC team had some better recruiting classes,

    95 8

    96 4

Maybe that just goes to prove you have to have talent, but talent alone won't win it all.

Most of the people on here that mock Mack Brown for not winning a NC are the sameones that say Frankie should of had more time. Mack Brown is in the Top 10 almost every year. He has the third most wins in the last five years but since he doesn't win it all he stinks. But on the other hand Frankie won 9 games in 03 so he should of been allowed more time. Something doesn't add up.

If recruiting isn't the key then way has it worked out so well for USC? Or LSU? Miami? Florida State? Michigan? Tennesse? Should I keep going?

How did this discussion get Frankie involved. But if we want to go into that. Wasn't the reason we got rid of FS is because we didn't want to "gravitate towards mediocracy" and losing to the KSU's and Texas. It sounds like OU is to Texas what NU is to KSU and Texas, at least in the last 5 years. Not that I am or was a FS supporter, but if you compare winning %

I guess it all comes down to whether you are happy being the brides maid, or if you want to be the bride.

  2. Your right, we had talent on the teams. My point being is that we didn't recruit the "very top" talent. Many of those players were made into greats at NU with great coaching,

Also, back in the early 90's we had the most state of the art weight training and nutrition program in the world
, determination and hard work. If you can find the recruiting statistics let me know, but i would venture to say that NU didn't have a top 5 recruiting class in 92-97. They did however have great football teams. It didn't just happen overnight with an infux of newcomers, it was a gradual progression up the ladder of success. First it started with making bowl games which they did every year. Then they lost the NC to FSU. I think that was the turning point that lit the fire under the players a$$es. They knew that everyone had them as underdogs and they outplayed FSU for 58 minutes. I think that got them to realize that they can beat the "florida schools".

Just look at what Texas does every year. Mack Brown brings in some of the top tallent annually. They haven't won a NC with it yet.

My point being is that "recruiting the top talent" isn't necessarily the answer, recruiting the right talent is.

  3. so how come we didnt win any more with frank solich then guys? if its not about talent then how come damn near every team that doesnt have talent get killed by the ones that do?

We didn't have the talent in the right positions. We also didn't have the proper leadership and chemistry. Maybe there were too many ego's on the team. I donno, I wasn't there, I think TO had a knack for getting the very best out of what he had.

  4. Sounds like Spain is in and going to practice

Nebraska coach Bill Callahan believes junior college transfer Tyrell Spain will be eligible to practice today.

    Really. He does.

“All the paperwork is in,” Callahan said. “I’m just waiting for final word.”

Thats good news. Hopefully the NCAA is done dealing with mascots and gets to its real job. We could really use the depth at WR. Now we will see if he can grasp the playbook or if he has already had his nose in it for the last 2 weeks.

  5. I don't think you have to have the best talent to win. Look at the NC teams of NU in the 90's. Probably didn't recruit the top talent according to the so called experts but had classes that stayed in tact and worked hard together. Filled a couple of key positions with talented players, but had many walk-ons or former walk-ons contribute greatly. I think determination and hard work is better that the most talented, showboatin, all about me "top talent".

  6. One of them you never know guys. With his size already and slower speed you think he would be more of an OLB prospect than a DB. He probably plays a little of both though. Would like to see him on defense to see how he looks. It looked like he was Mr. Everything for his team on Offense, rb, WR, PR.

  7. Watching his recruiting video he didn't seem very fast. I don't recall what the article said about the school classifications, but it didn't look like he was playing against the top talent. He looked like he was playing JV teams. He was just that much bigger than everyone. Some of the plays on his recruiting video weren't all that impressive. He had a pitch or two where he failed to get the corner and had the play strung out on him. A diving catch he made that was ruled out of bounds by the ref. A few short 3 yd runs up the middle and off tackle. He did have some impressive plays though. The punt return was good. He didn't look all that smooth though.

  8. Sounds like Shareece Wright is fairly high on the huskers

    From HI

"I'm going to (officially) visit Nebraska for sure, and probably LSU too."

Why is Nebraska going to get a definite official visit?

"Just because it's a good place and I like them. They were the first school to offer me a scholarship. I'd have no problem playing for Nebraska. They have a real good program education-wise. It's a real good school, and I want to see what their program is like out there."

This would be great if we got a commit out of him. Even greater if he is a package deal with the other two studs. Definately would help solve our future depth problems at DB

  9. After reading all that i think I forgot what the original topic was about. Oh yeah, depth chart. Who cares if they haven't released an official depth chart. Everyone will see who the #1's are when they announce the starting lineup during the maine game. I agree with several of the posters here that the coaches are trying to promote competition and not give anyone the idea that a position is taken. Let everybody battle their a$$'s off and may the best man win.

  10. Those are some great stats. Not surprising though. The defense as a whole sucked and the offense contributed to that. Did we fare anybetter against the nonconference opponents? We did have a winning record against nonconference foes (2-1) should have been 3-0 but one of the wins was against 1-AA competiton.

  11. I feel sorry for some of these players. The NCAA takes its sweet a$$ time to decide the eligibility of players. This guy has already missed over 2 weeks of practice and I donno if he is going to class or not yet. If not he has missed 2 days of class. The NCAA is putting these players in a real tough spot. Was Spain already in Lincoln or was he waiting to get word before he trekked here from Cali? For the players sake make a friggin decision one way or the other so the player can do what he needs to do and get on with his life.

  12. I have also heard an OL that didn't play last year. Let's just light the fire under the rumors. But I have heard that there is a safety that could report on Wed or Thurs. That would be nice, but if one or a couple of these players do report, how are we on scholarships. Will they greyshirt?

  13. Josh could blow out his knee and it wouldn't make a difference.

He is in a situation where he likely takes a redshirt regardless of anything, so it would be 2 years before he saw the field. Plus, the training and rehab would do him good considering he needs to fill out that 6'6 frame. :)

I agree that he will be sitting for a couple of years unless Beck doesn't pan out, but I don't think he needs to fill out his 6'6 frame too much more. We don't need him like that QB from Kentucky a few years ago Lorenzo (I think was his name but could be wrong) who was listed around 280, but more like 300. I he still needs to be able to keep his mobility, I think 240 or 245 would be around the max.

  14. Crouch was a ball hog, and would not have pitched if he had the players in my opinion as he has always been ERIC, so there fore Frost was without a question the best QB of the two at Nebraska.  Frost was a QB, Eric was a running back.  Frost performed in the offense as Tom designed it.  Eric ran the way Eric wanted it. End of discussion.  lol

Frost had the luxury of running Tom's offense, Crouch had to run Frank's. Big difference, IMO.

I agree w/ you hoyamannn about the offense being different. In the TO years we had the "option", In the FS years we had the QB "keeper". On the flip side of that I would say our IB's were better in the TO championship years than the FS years.
