  1. Evaluation

    By Brandon Cavanaugh

Speculation and rumor are part of what makes that long period between seasons fun, but some talk that appears to be spreading across Husker Nation is that a big time Texas Defensive Tackle may find himself amongst the Cornhusker commit list. Quoted as being a “light verbal” to Nebraska, Isiah Norton out of Dallas, Texas’ Kimball High School seems fairly enamored with the Big Red right now and why not? In the spirit of fairness, I thought I’d take a look at some early film of Norton to see just what the big fella brings to the table.

The first thing I thought when watching Norton’s film front to back was: “Suh”. Norton’s commitment and eventual work through the program should he become a Cornhusker will be the Pelini brothers’ attempt to clone Ndamkuong Suh. Norton is big (6’5” 290), he is fast and he doesn’t let a little thing like being held get in his way. Again, hear that somewhere before?

While Kimball High may not be in the Big XII, Norton does a fine Suh impression on its’ opposition’s offensive lines. His awareness is very keen for a junior. There’s an old adage that if you’re thinking during a play, you shouldn’t be playing. Norton is very read and react. This plays to his advantage almost too well. The big man shrugs through two men to get to the quarterback, jolts into open space at a running back like he was shot out of a cannon and does not stop on a play until the ball carrier is down and I mean DOWN, Jack.

Oh, I forgot to mention he does this thing fairly well. It’s called pass coverage. Adding even more hype to the Norton name (look at what site you’re on), this big man can not only track down a running back or sift through to get to a quarterback, but proves doubly efficient against passers as he reads eyes to an impressive level and goes for the pick.

    So, let’s review:

    1.) Massive beast man: Check

    2.) Excellent speed: Check

3.) Makes plays despite being held: Check (and useful in the Big XII)

4.) Plays pass coverage and swats/attempts to pick

…yes, I think I would take this kid in a heartbeat, lock him in the weight room with Dobson for a year and unleash him on the poor offensive backfields of the Big XII. Hey kid, you like Nebraska? I think Nebraska’d love to have you. You remind us of someone we know.

Thanks for sharing that. That evaluation was awesome.

Good read. Can't wait until Suh Jr commits.

  2. a think i just saw chris down at my local beach access burning a fatty and mumbling about the good ol days....

Gonna lay in the hot sun and roll a big fat one...And grab my guitar and play

    Good song.

  3. Yeah I also heard that he wasn't very committed to his rehab for his knee. If he isn't going to put in the time and effort to excel, then he doesn't belong here. I wish him the best of luck on wherever life takes him.

  4. So, is the getting rolled by a hooker at 3am which turns out to be a transvestite coming from experience?

I didn't realize Eddie Murphy frequented this board.

LOL oh man, this was the discussion in class and at work. I think it's bc the Music City bowl is going under due to altercations of the guy who ran that being a jackass. But i think the idea is cool, there used to be football games played in the old Yankee stadium if any of you recall.

The bad thing is, is the weather, especially with all the snow NYC got this winter, i'm sure it'll be the same/worse in the next few years. Idk if it'd be worth all the money spent tho =|

Husker fans will show up rain, snow, or sunshine. The only problem is we'll never be bad enough that we will have the opportunity to go to that bowl. :koolaid2:

But I'm not so sure that the south teams' fans would want to go to that game. They are too big of pussies to have to sit in the cold and cheer for their team.

  5. Well the "real" draft expert (aka Kiper) has Suh higher than McCoy on his draft board and mock draft. He even said Suh was the best DT he's seen in his 32 years of covering the draft. So I am gonna believe him more than the other douches.

  6. I think if we had won just 2 of those 3 heartbreakers we would've at least gotten to a BCS bowl game. Among the teams that played in the BCS bowls, I think we would've beaten the following: Iowa, Georgia Tech, Cinci, Boise St, Oregon & Texas. You'll notice that's 6 of the 10 - the other 4 (Bama, Florida, TCU & Ohio St) would've had the upperhand based on how our offense stacked up against their defenses.

More I think about it, if we'd have won all three games, i'm not so sure we'd have gotten some NC game consideration...

That's what I was wondering. Even though we got beat pretty bad against TTech it might have been far enough in the season's past that we might had a chance at the NC game. But then I wondered if it would have been the year that Boise or TCU; maybe Cinci gets in... I'm not sure but fun to ponder! So we may have been just 4 points away from possibly being in the NC game? That's a crazy thought! Gets me even more anxious for the season to start and even more pumped on :koolaid2::koolaid2::koolaid2:

I dont think we would have been in the NC, I really think that the voters would have voted for Florida to play Bama for an SEC CG rematch. They wouldnt want an non-BCS school and lets face it, Cinci isnt much bigger than Boise and TCU. I think if we would have won those three games, we would have been third, ahead of Cinci, Boise, and TCU, but the lost to TTech would hurt us. Thus, there would have been an SEC CG rematch and the possible end of the BCS.

  7. Uh, Nebraska is int the PLAINS. I think there was some grass for us to practice on from time to time. It was all about Florida cuz they had a "prettier offense"

Not when its all under snow. Although I do agree that it was a reason for all the analysts to pick Florida, even though I believe it is one of the lamest reasons to pick a team.

  8. the 2008 list looks like it shows all positions. it has zack bowman and steve octavien and I'm pretty sure they weren't receivers

It does show all positions, but it's relevant simply because WRs are, of necessity, included. That's if this list is accurate, of course, which isn't a given. It's just a bare reference, that's all.

yea ok I get you now, I just thought you were asking why the one list only had eight and the other on had over 200. my bad

  9. OK, take this with a grain of salt. It's from "List After List," which describes itself as a wiki of lists. So not sure how accurate this is. Here is their list for 2009 fastest NFL combine times:

    Knox, Johnny 4.25 - WR

    Butler, Deon 4.26 - WR

    Harvin, Percy 4.37 - WR

    Ogletree, Kevin 4.37 - WR

    Kenny Britt 4.48 - WR

Cook, Jared 4.50 secs - TE

    White, Pat 4.50 - QB

    Barden, Ramses 4.57 - WR

Here's their list for 2008 (note the huge disparity in the number of people listed here:

    1. Branch, Tyvon - 4.24 seconds

    2. King, Justin - 4.29

    3. Bowman, Zackary - 4.34

    4. McKelvin, Leodis - 4.35

    5. Franklin, Will - 4.37

    6. Jackson, Dexter - 4.37

    7. Godfrey, Charles - 4.45

    8. Grice-Mullen, Ryan - 4.46

    9. Simpson, Jerome - 4.47

    10. Reynaud, Darius - 4.47

    11. Stewart, Jonathan - 4.48

    12. Choice, Tashard - 4.52

    13. Purify, Maurice - 4.53

    14. Groves, Quentin - 4.57

    15. Keglar, Stanford - 4.58

    16. Jackson, Chevis - 4.58

    17. Manningham, Mario - 4.59

    18. O'Connell, Kevin - 4.61

    19. Green-Ellis, BenJarvus - 4.63

    20. Abdullah, Husain - 4.63

    21. Amendola, Danny - 4.64

    22. Gooden, Tavares - 4.65

    23. McKinney, Justin - 4.65

    24. McBride, Shaheer - 4.66

    25. Barber, Dominique - 4.66

    26. Castille, Simeon - 4.67

    27. Gholston, Vernon - 4.67

    28. Octavien, Steve - 4.67

    29. Bennett, Martellus - 4.69

    30. Wheeler, Philip - 4.73

The 2008 list has 241 players, while the 2009 has eight. No source is cited for these numbers that I could see, so take them with a grain of salt, I guess.

Anyway, if Rivals' reported time of 4.5/40 for Reed is accurate, that means he's got above-average speed, if these times are anything to go by.

the 2008 list looks like it shows all positions. it has zack bowman and steve octavien and I'm pretty sure they weren't receivers

  10. I think the funniest or the most stupid comment was about a scoring defense vs yards allowed. The one KU fan stated a team is more effective having a defense giving up less yards than having one giving up less points.

The guy explained it and it was a valid point. He basically said that no specific metric is a perfect identifier of how good a defense is. The flaw in Points Allowed is that it encompasses points given up by offensive turnovers as well as run-backs on special teams. The flaw in Yards Allowed is that it doesn't measure the stat most directly related to wins, points.

I thought they had a good discussion.

I don't get some people here bashing the discussions on this site, though. Look at the KU thread - there are rational, well-thought-out posts and a couple of nonsense posts. Holding that up as some paragon of message boards while comparing them to this board... not getting it.

I sometimes wonder why some people are members here when they clearly do not respect the other members. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

But the bottom line is the Defense that keeps the other team from scoring wins. The yards against is just stats (fluff) in my opinion.

but obviously our offense didnt help matters. they're inability to stay on the field forced our defense to stay on the field much more than the other great defenses.

    nebraska- 3798yds 271.3ypg 955 plays 4.0yd/play

    texas- 3527yds 251.9ypg 918 plays 3.8yd/play

    alabama- 3435yds 245.4ypg 842 plays 4.1yd/play

    florida- 3533yds 252.4ypg 844 plays 4.2yd/play

as you can see our defense was on the field more than 100 plays more than bama and florida, and with all that extra time on the field, of course we'll give up more yards. but the impressive thing is that we only trail texas in yards/play, and you would think that fatigue would eventually set in and they would start to break down, but that never happened all season, thats what was most impressive IMO. I honestly think we were really lucky to have our defense to fall back on with our struggling offense. if we had the defense of 2008, i wouldnt have been surprised if we wouldnt have have become bowl eligible. but thats just my two cents, but this is why i truly do appreciate what this staff has done in only two short years, and that is why I am excited for next year.

"Oh and I forgot to add... despite the annoyance at so MANY of them being in our stadium, as a whole, the Husker fans were by far the most gracious group of opposing fans at ND that I've seen."
