  1. You're right that Kelly wasn't able to get the perfect QB in his first recruiting class like Coach Frost was. With their location and resources I think we will see UCLA really improve from year one to year two. I dont think it will be the improvement that we will see here but they're will be significant improvement none the less

Either the players who liked Durkin or those that wanted him gone will be chapped.  I would think there would be more than a few transfers.

I totally agree. ESPN reported that players got up and walk out of his first team meeting back. I can't imagine those kids will want to stay around that toxic culture. Also how in the hell does the football program not go in the tank now? There is no way as a parent I could trust him with my son. No matter what he says about how he will take care of him. And you know every other team that is going for the same recruits will use it against him. IMO Maryland made a big mistake bringing him back.

Minny- I think we get over the hump this week. I dont have a good reason, just kind of a gut feeling

BC- Good god we better win this one

Illini- They're not very good either, and I think we are more talented and again we are getting over the hump

Iowa- I think we will have a little momentum, kids by then will have a firm grasp on the scheme and how to finally execute it. And last of all, why the hell not?

I can tell you from first-hand experience, Garden City Kansas is not even remotely like Lincoln. Both places may seem to be geographically related "Midwest" but they couldn't be more different. I spent almost two years of my life in Garden City and Southwest Kansas. To say it sucks there would be extremely nice. Lincoln is an urban Mecca compared to GC

Couldn't agree more, SWKS is practically a desert. It's flat, hot, and has nothing to look at. If you haven't been West of Manhattan or Wichita then you have no idea. I'm sure Nebraska is the same, but the terrain and scenery of Ks changes dramatically from the east to west sides

I thought this was cute. They may have been political rivals, but they respect each other as people.

Why can't our politicians just treat each like this at all times? I understand that they may not agree on everything, but their goals should be the same. Make our country the best it can be. Instead more than not, it turns them into ugly people who do nothing but take shots at each other and try to do whatever they can to make each other look bad. We need more of this and less of the acting like asshats.

    Sorry to get off topic.

McCain was a hell of a man who loved our country deeply.

By staying past the scholarship, he knew it would cost a teammate a scholarship. Planning to leave if you are not the starter, hurts the entire team, but specifically, it robs a walkon of approximately $20,000.

I understand what you're trying to get at, and like most on here I don't like what Gebbia did, but we have no idea if he planned on leaving if not being named starter before Saturday or not. But we also don't know who/what else may have pushed him to leave, hell we dont know that if Gebbia would have stayed he would have turned bitter and became a cancer or not. There is so many variables and we no virtually nothing short of Martinez got the nod and Gebbia made the decision to transfer. We gotta take this at face value, say damned the luck, move on to Saturday, and watch our Husker beat the hell out of the Zips

I agree. I really dislike what TG did. Transfer in the spring. Don't wait until game week. Yes it may be best for TG, but he left his team without a backup (another could have been recruited, Bunch would have been better prepared, etc.), and he cost a scholarship to a deserving walkon. I do not think the argument of transferring is OK because it was best for TG. Do the guys that robbed Frost's house get off by making the argument that it was best for them?

Thats totally comparing apples to oranges

  8. To further what Nebfanatic said, I think Gebbia is the exception not the rule because of the fact that he was pretty much set to be the backup for his entire career due to he and Martinez being in the same class. It's not very common for two QB's of the caliber we had to be in the same class. So I think with a QB that is a year or two younger, the potential to stay and be backup and wait your turn, knowing that your not going to forever be the backup will keep them around.

Yes, the stadium was originally named to honor Nebraskans who fought in the Civil War, the Spanish-Americans wars, and World War One, but perhaps the theme is growing a little old. In any case, I wish UNL would not deliberately inject more militarism into football games.

I struggle to understand how honoring the heroes of our country is growing old. You have the right to your opinion just like I have the right to mine. I just think it’s always appropriate to remember and honor the people who made sure we have that right.

As a father with a son that plays sports, I am not sure how I would handle a situation like this.  I try to instill my son with the philosophy of helping your team in whatever way he can.  I wouldn't want to have him be thought of as a "quitter" just because things aren't going his way.  Of course, that's easier to say that now, when he hasn't been in a situation where he's been cut from a team or is forced to play back-up with little hope to play.

I think I would urge my son to stay if he played just about any position other than QB. It's extremely common for the backups to get a lot of reps at just about every position except for QB. If my son had the potential to play in the NFL at QB, I'd have to urge him to find another school that gives him the best opportunity to do so.

he played safety his first two years there because stanford had steve stenstrom at qb. yes he got snaps at qb but the majority of his playing time was on the defensive side of the ball.

walsh also was replaced by willingham in 1995 which was part of why he left stanford. the coach he went to play for was no longer there.

Gebbia came here to play for MR, and once he was let go, Gebbia stayed proNebraksa, even after Frost got the perfect guy to fit his system. If Gebbia would have transferred soon after MR was let go, nobody would have blamed him, but instead we have people who want to crucify him for sticking it out, working his ass off, and making the QB race a competitive one. If anything Gebbia made Martinez even better with forcing him to work his ass off as well. Let the kid go, wish him good luck and move on. For Christ sake at the end of the day it really doesn't impact any of our daily lives

  12. Question. If Martinez struggles early on and especially if he plays poorly, is there any chance Gebbia takes over? I know people predicted the opposite happening with Gebbia starting (I am included in this group), so I guess I’m asking if there’s anyway short of injury A-Mart loses the starting position?

And talking about former Husker QBs, I would think it would be interesting to see Huskerboard members offer their opinions of which former NU QBs Scott Frost would like to recruit for his offense today.

In my view, based on the offense we showed in the spring game and last year's UCF bowl game, I think Frost would most like to recruit:

    1.  Bobby Newcombe

    2.  Steve Taylor

    3.  Tuner Gill

    4.  Gerry Godowski

I don't think he would recruit Crouch or Frazier or T Martinez (inadequate in the passing game).

Not sure there are any others.  Frankly I doubt he would recruit himself as he was not as fast or as good a thrower as he would like, although his size and strength and coach-like football mind would have made it very tempting.

I think he is looking for a very good runner with excellent passing skills and 'touch' and a sharp football mind that is 6-3 and 230 pounds.  A. Martinez is the perfect size and runner but time will reveal if he has the throwing and football coach understanding and quick decision making needed.

Newcombe is undersized but his blazing speed and beautiful passing and option skills and great QB intelligence would have been ideal.

I do think Crouch and Frazier would be recruited. Chances are if they were playing in H.S. right now, then they would be more advanced in the passing game as the quality of QB coaching in high school has improved dramatically, as has the passing game overall. I coach at a small school and we see teams that spread the field and try to throw it all over the place several times a year. In all honesty our offense is an anomaly compared to what we see around here anymore.

This name was used the last 2 seasons at UCF and they have no ties to a duck - it will be used for the next 15 years at NU and we are a state known for cows and corn.

Can we move on to a topic that may actually change
