Do you have something to share with the class that shows the Catholic Church isn't teaching ProLife about all stages of life?

Nice snarky reply.  I normally enjoy talking football with the fine folks on this board, but apparently there are bullies here who are anti-Catholic or are intolerant of differing viewpoints (dare mention of other viewpoint is slippery slope lol).

My teaching to the "class":  Go back a re-read my comment.  It said:  'from conception TO natural death"  that implies respect for human life at all stages of life.

I'll be sticking to other venues where hatred isn't so prevalent with its members.  Never thought I'd get this level of bashing from Husker fans and I am sure when I sign off you'll continue the anti-catholic bashing and be proud of it.

I guess it's a bit off topic, but it floors me that they bussed kids to DC to participate in the March for Life. I get that it's a catholic school and everything, but that's pretty heavy handed on the dogma for teenagers, isn't it?

It's a voluntary mission trip paid by the students/parents.  Pro life (conception to natural death) is one of the many ministries of the Catholic church (and other churches I assume) and is taught from a loving and prayerful perspective.  Unfortunately, when people think of pro life they associate radical anti-abortion activities with this ministry.

It is sad.  But, when you have a President (who the hat indicates you support) also being heavily supported by people in the KKK and Neo Nazis while also wearing that hat, it's pretty easy to see why people from groups the KKK and NN hate would feel that way.

    Don't you think?

I guess so but I really pay no attention to KKK or NN as they are a spit in the Ocean of Trump supporters just as the Black Panthers or other radical groups outwardly supported Obama.  I guess it depends how offended you are by those fringe groups.

Ok.  I still don't remember any of this specifically pertaining to the Obama administration....like the rumors about the land in Montana.

But, there have been preppers around for long before Obama was in office.  I'm also not quite seeing how anything preppers were doing has anything to do with Obama....or, are you saying it was TRUE that Obama had purchased land in Montana to imprison the religious right?

Prepping became popular after Obama took office.  The Montana land thing was just a rumor started out of fear.

I'm not sure that I remember anything about "preppers".

Can you please explain how you view the divide in America during the Obama years?  I would agree there were tensions.  I'm interested in your view of them.

There was a group of people called "preppers" who prepped for end of America.  There was a TV reality show about them.  Prepping supply companies popped up.  There were stories that the Obama administration purchased land in Montana to imprison the religious right.

I will go back to saying that the people who truly are at fault here are the Black Israelites.  I think we all agree to that.

That said, I have been on the national mall probably 8-10 times in my life.  I know things like this happen.  But, it's not something that happens "every day".  In fact, I know it's a small sample size, but I've never witnessed anything like this.

There's something about all of this, from the initial incident to the over reaction to the initial video that I keep going back to and thinking it's just another example of the heightened emotions and anxiety in America ever since Trump took office.

Agree but would change to since Obama took office (just flipped flopped).  Remember the preppers who thought Obama was the anti-Christ?  Our country has been divided since 2008

Also, are we still ignoring the fact that these kids were doing the Florida St/Chiefs/Braves chant and tomahawk chop while the elder was chanting?

So where Chiefs fans yesterday.  The NFL should outlaw that.

I think the kids were in the middle of their school chants they do at their sporting events and a few did the tomahawk cheer as the elder was beating his drum as that is common at sporting events these days.  I guess you would need to ask the kids what their intent was.

  8. I guess that's is on the parents and teachers then and they shouldn't have them wear a hat that states Make America Great bc that is akin to a white robe.  Knowing many of the parents, they would never want to have their kids promote white supremist ideas and wearing a hat that offends.  I guess we have to be very careful today not to offend other with our outfits.

If those kids weren't wearing MAGA hats this never makes it into the collective social consciousness.  Events like this happen on the National Mall every day.

Every parent upset their kid is on the front page of newspapers, that their kid's school is being called by angry citizens, that their kid is being mischaracterized needs to realize they're responsible for all of it.

I'd have to look at video again but there were 10-15 kids in Maga hats out of the 100+ kids.  From I am told from my friends, they were purchased while site seeing in DC and their parents didn't send them there in MAGA hats.

I"m still wondering about the adults who put a bunch of white minors in full MAGA gear and bused them from Kentucky to Washington DC for a rally designed to disrupt a Woman's March timed around Martin Luther King's birthday.

This is an annual trip for the March for Life Rally on anniversary of Roe vs Wade in Jan 1973.  There are usually parent, teacher and pastor chaperones and I do not recall any past issues.  My guess is they were at the wrong place at the wrong time with these protestors.  They picked unfortunate meeting place to load the buses and head back to Ky.

The March for Life has been going on since 1974.  It is a peaceful and prayer 1-2 days.  It is definitely not "designed to disrupt the Women's March" which started 3 years ago.

The March for Life has nothing to do with MLK, it is a protest on the anniversary of Roe vs Wade

So an adult was there with the teenagers?

Yes, they got permission from a chaperone to do their school chants to drown out the racial slurs and other insults thrown at them.  Cov cath chants are not mean spirited in any fashion.  My guess is there were only so many adults per number of kids and there was obviously a lot going on (cant be everywhere all the time).  The interaction with the elder was only a minute or so and unfortunately the adult was not close enough to that interaction to step in.  In hindsight there probably should have been more adults around but Cov Cath and other Diocese of Covington schools have sent groups to DC for years without major incident (that I am aware of) (my kids have gone there btw) and felt the number of adults was appropriate.

My guess is the Diocese will have further guidelines for future DC trips.  That is, how students and chaperone should deal with protestors or people yelling anti-Catholic insults at them.

  12. Just to add some more info to this ugly situation.  While not on the front lines, I have several friends that are Cov Cath alumni and/or their boys attend there currently and a couple were at the March 4 Life rally.  My son would have attended Cov Cath if not for a work relocation.  My friends were calling for the truth and both sides to be heard at the inception and were met with vile & condemning remarks.  The news headlines labeled the 17 year old as "mocking" "taunting" "intimidating".  I have seen twitter posts with the kid's picture that said "the most punchable face in America".  People attacking the kids said "he looked smug" or "he looked" this or that.  Do people know how wrong that is?

He is 17 and most of the kids I knew that go to that school live a pretty sheltered life (middle to upper middle class) and in his statement said he had never encountered a protest situation.  He looked uncomfortable and just smiled for a couple seconds at the Indian Elder. His statement said by smiling he wanted the elder to know he meant no harm.  My son is 14 and in high school and I am 100% sure that if someone came up to him in that situation, he would have just stood there listening to the drum beat hoping an adult would step in and help.

What led to the elder and his drum were the black Hebrew group hurling insults at the boys waiting for their bus. Now, when you have 100 or so teens waiting around, I am sure they were not sitting there quietly admiring the scenery.  They probably were loud and to adults seemed like obnoxious teens. The black Hebrew groupl called the boys "crackers" "incest babies" "racist" and called one of the black Cov Cath students the N word.  In response, the boys asked an adult for permission to do school cheers.  Cov Cath is a school with a lot of school spirit.  This probably agitated others as well and that's when the elder intervened.  The indian elder's later account said he needed to step in to save the black Hebrews from the "beasts" (aka Cov Cath boys).

  13. Not to deflect from OSU & Urban domestic violence saga, but where was the media outrage when the 6'4" 280 lb 5* Mississippi State recruit was caught on video throwing haymakers at a defenseless woman laying on the ground?  I think he got a 1 game suspension against FCS/Sunbelt team and Mullen faced very little scrutiny.

  14. First, I admit the B1G programs have been deserved the negative press, sanctions, etc and the Urban Meyer/OSU sage is not over yet, but it seems ESPN ran with its narrative from the outset that Urban was a fraud and shady character.  These were comments from Paul Finebaum and other ESPN talking heads from the outset before all the facts were in.

Do you think ESPN intentionally tries to knock B1G programs via negative press to support its primary partner, the SEC?

I can't find the screenshot, but there were side by side ESPN headlines from a few years ago.  It was "Oklahoma holds on to beat Tennessee 34-10" and the next week "Georgia rolls by Tennessee 35-32".  I have informally tracked ESPN CFB headlines and especially since last season (very successful for B1G vs SEC as whole being down) the ESPN headlines seem very bias.

Lots of Iowa player gets DUI, Minnesota player transferring, etc, vs Georgia signs another 5-star, Stidham feels at home now at Auburn, Saban dominates recruiting.  ESPN's Greg McIlroy saying go to Clemson (I realize they are ACC) to have fun vs going to SEC to win like at Alabama, George  and Texas AM

Recreate how you think it went down...I will start you off.  Shelly gets those pictures tweeted to her by her friend, showing how she is beat to s#!t...And ACTION...

I am not going to recreate it bc I don't know all the facts.  As my first post stated, if the evidence shows he knew the extent of abuse and did not report it, he should be terminated.

It occurs everywhere. In fact, the same can be said about Frost and Nebraska. In business, everyone knows you hire people you know and trust.

My small private company (I am part owner) has a nepotism policy.  It is strictly adhered to.  As an owner I pushed for my wife (now ex) to fill in temporarily for an open position and was told no.  State universities should have more stringent hiring and personnel policies than my little company.

  17. A side issue to this is and what likely led to the mess is the prevalent nepotism and good ol' boy network there seems to be in CFB. Too much authority is given to head CFB coaches on who they hire.  Seems head coaches put family members on their staff and they are paid handsomely.  Really, do you think Zack Smith could find a job outside of football making $3-400K a year?  I heard Urban's son in law is on staff too.  Not a good situation if the son in law f's up and then Urban is in uncomfortable position.

Here's the problem with all the excuses that are being through about, whether Urban saw them or not. Taken from McMurphy's report:

Lindsey is the wife of Brian Voltolini, considered one of Meyer’s most loyal staff members. Brian is Ohio State’s football operations director and has been part of Meyer’s staffs for 15 seasons at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State.

Courtney: “(Zach’s) trying to make me look crazy bc that’s what Shelley is saying (he’s doing)”
Lindsey: “He (Urban) just said he (Zach) denied everything”
Courtney: “I hope urban is smarter than that”
Lindsey: “He (Urban) doesn’t know what to think”
Courtney: “I don’t really care. Ya know”
Lindsey: “Yeah, don’t worry about urb”

Urban saw the text messages and was aware of the situation. If you can't comprehend that, I will steal a line from Courtney and say I hope you are smarter than that. He covered it up. That is a fact. This isn't about policing. I think this whole ordeal wouldn't have been an issue if Urban would've come clean a long time ago. Said we had personal issues we were hoping would be resolved. They weren't and I don't want those type of people coaching my players. Instead, he lied straight to the media's face last week and that is what will ultimately do him in.

That text exchange doesn't prove Urban saw any texts or photos.  It proves in my opinion he is aware of a situation between Zack and Courtney and Urban asked Zach about it which Zack denied.

This is awesome!  I am totally positive that Shelly did this...

She sees these pictures of her friend...pictures that show she was beat to s#!t...and later that night in bed while reading a Home and Garden she looks over at Urban and says "Oh Urban, I forgot to tell you, the Smiths are having issues again"...

"Issues" is finding some porn on the husbands computer...Not getting the s#!t kicked out of you.

I show my friends pretty much any pictures that is texted to me...So I am for sure showing my hubby/wife pictures of a family friend that has been beat to s#!t.

We don't know what Shelly did or didn't do related to the pictures.  Who knows what the circumstances were.  Maybe Urban previously told her keep him out of coach wife drama.  Shelly might not have wanted to bother Urban (which would be a serious lapse in judgment).

I'm assuming that Meyer, being the scumbag he seems to be, will try and get his wife to take the fall for this.

Possibly, unless there is text or other evidence showing Urban's knowledge of the abuse.  Shelly can always say I never told Urban or gave him a sanitized version.

Of course, that scheme (ie Shelly covering for Urban) would take collusion between the two and I assume lying to OSU officials in their investigation.

Fairly well-reasoned and I agree with a lot of it. +1

In reference to the bolded, it seems near impossible someone like UM didn't know the extent of the issues. It would have required significant cover up by some combination of his wife, his staff and their wives, and/or, to a degree, pure bone-idleness on his behalf. I have a hard time believing he had no idea the reasons behind the Smith's divorce, particularly with how close the coaching culture is.

I don't know.  I am sure Urban is an extremely busy man dealing with 80+ players, lots of coaches, AD & university folks, on the road recruiting, PR appearances, etc.  Does he need to be involved all these people's personal matters especially if it's a recurring marital discord matter?  Maybe Shelly and other's didn't want to bother him with this matter again.  They downplayed or misinterpreted the serious nature of the matter.

  22. OSU fan here and the story is upsetting based on the info published so far.  Assuming UM knew the extent of the situation, how can he be so stupid to not to report it to the proper people at OSU and protect a position coach.  I am not coming to conclusion until I know all the information.  Specifically,

    1.  What did UM know about the abuse?  His sources seem to be Shelly and Zack Smith.  Apparently UM asked Zack which Zack denied.  Did Shelly simply tell him "Zack and wife are having issues again?"  Does he have an obligation to get involved in an employee's personal matters if he was not aware of physical abuse?  If Shelly told him about the abuse, showed him photos and UM didn't report, then he should be terminated.

    2.  Was Zack actually arrested in 2015?  If UM looked into this and found no arrest, what else did he do or would be reasonable required to do?

    3.  If UM directly or indirectly via his assistant encouraged Courtney Smith not to press charges in 2009, he should be terminated.  I'd like to know his involvement in that.

I have a feeling UM and OSU do not want to disclosure all the sordid details and are working on separation agreement.
