  1. Just for the sake of argument, here's the FBS AAU list filtered by Conferences that's not already in the B1G or Pac-12

    ACC

    Duke University (1938)

    Georgia Institute of Technology (2010)

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1922)

    University of Pittsburgh (1974)

    University of Virginia (1904)

    Big 12

    Iowa State University (1958)

    The University of Kansas (1909)

The University of Texas at Austin (1929)

    SEC

    University of Missouri-Columbia (1908)

    Texas A&M University (2001)

    University of Florida (1985)

    Vanderbilt University (1950)

    MAC

University at Buffalo, The State University of New York (1989)

and here is the problem, the only schools on that list that excite me are UT, A&M, and Florida. A Ga Tech and UNC addition wouldn't do enough for me.

  2. There is nothing sexy about this. I understand the dollars are moving this along, and there is some gamble as to whether Maryland and Rutgers can deliver these markets to the B1G network but I think it will work dollars wise. Just leaves me with a meh feeling.

I will be disappointed if B1G dosent go to 16. I will also be disappointed if the next adds are the Charlotte and Atlanta markets. I want brands that will strengthen the conference. Florida St and Clemson are my choices.

  3. To me Rutgers could be the sleeping giant in all of college football. Not only are they in a the biggest tv market in the country, they have a very large alumni base. For sure they don't have the history and tradition of many teams of the BIG but imagine yourself as a Rutgers fan looking foward to that Big East schedule every year. Now replace that with a BIG schedule with teams like PSU, OSU and Michigan coming in. That will instantly be a huge boost to the interest and following of Rutgers football. Now throw in the fact of all the other BIG Alumni in the NY/NJ area who would love to go see their team play while in Rutgers and it will demand the local media pay more attention to that program and the BIG as a whole. Then throw in the BIG money they will receive and increased donor funding to facilities and they have a lot of potential to compete as a top program. I'll put my trust in Delany in this one.

This is a very good post. In my mind this theory of expanding into these large markets and then getting these markets to care about college football is risky, and right now these two markets do not care about Rutgers or Maryland. As far as the potential for Rutgers, we shouldn't add schools based on they're potential. I want brand names. I am not sure it would boost the primary rights enough to justify their addition, but if all those tv sets began getting B1G Network on primary cable cha-ching. Also if we are sticking with a contingious footprint this is about the best we can do.

However if we can loose this idea of a contingious footprint wouldn't we rather have Florida St and Clemson? These are bigger brands that already have a supporting fan base.

  4. It doesn't hurt either that our first two games next year are Wyoming, and then Southern Miss, it would give him time to get that leg stretched out, and strengthened!!

The guy will probably be out a year. I would almost bet he takes a med-hardship wherever he goes.

  5. Close. Tampa 2 is a two deep safety look with the safeties playing the deep thirds around the hashes. The middle linebacker drops back another 10 yards or so to cover the deep middle third.

Exactly. That is why you see teams put up a ton of yards on us but no points. That is my prediction for Penn State. They will put up yards on us through the air, but not points. They like to throw those really short passes and wait for an opportunity to go up top.

Not sure I would call NU a true Tampa 2. It is similar in that NU plays a lot of 2 deep safties, but the corners do not play zone they play man and you rarely see the MLB covering the deep third like a Brian Urlacher will. The "bend but dont break" result is the same, not quite the traditional Tampa 2.

  6. The media is looking at the obivious recruiting advantages the locations of Colombus and Ann Arbor have over Nebraska relating to population. It is the same argument against NU that has been made for the last 40 years. It is also the argument that this is the way the Big10 has been historically and so it will be again.

Michigan and OSU have these obivious advantages, but that will not keep NU, Wisconsin, MSU, PSU, and the rest of the league from competing with them. I wouldn't be offended by any media garbage.

  7. Not sure what the deal is, but I'm not worried. He played well a couple years ago, but peoples' obsession with this guy is a little overboard... PJ Smith and Stafford are solid. Leave it at that.

I think our safties have played terrible. I remember this guy blowing up QB's off the blitz and I cant understand why no safty since has been able to do the same things.

  8. Thanks husker_x. Well thought out post.

I too have been in the "wait and see" camp for awhile. Several posters here were outraged that anyone would dare question Bo . . . but now we're seeing what I've been suspecting. Ultimately, I see a coach without answers. I see a defense that is even worse than the average to below average defense that I expected. I see a shocking lack of team speed across the defensive unit.

This is not a good football team. Bo has had 5 years to install his system and to recruit his players. The result has been a steady but gradual decline since Bo's first seasons. There is no tangible progress and Bo's vaunted process seems to be a failure. I said before the season that I hoped that the wheels didn't fall off during this stretch of games (Ohio St/NW/Mich/Mich St/Penn St). Given what I've seen so far this season I won't hold my breath.

Go Big Red, and prove me wrong Bo.

I believe the main reason for the declining D is a result of Bo's first 2 recruiting classes which were poor. The D did improve in Bo's first 3 years to a point of greatness with Callahan's players. It has since declined quickly while relying on Bo's first 2 classes. With those 2 poor classes there is no reason to expect great improvement in year 5.

I agree with everything else you said. Bo has 2 weeks to make some changes scheme wise and personel wise. I really believe Bo should get 2 more years to see what he can do with his better classes, but if the wheels come off that might not happen. It's a tough business.

  9. I think its talent. Poor recruiting classes in year 1 and 2 for Bo are playing now as juniors and seniors. Steinkuler can be a good player, and will probably be drafted to play DE next level, but to be a DT he needs to get to 290 and cant seem to get over 280.

    Merideth enough said.

Compton is a run stuffer, and could blitz more. He is also a liability in pass D. I don't think he can make an NFL roster.

David is a fun player to watch, but his only skill is coming off the edge.

Fischer hasn't been playing consistently. he looks OK, always wonder if he recovered from that leg injury.

    Whaley, enough said.

The rest of the guys are young. They could still develop, but arent quite ready to be counted on.

  10. And while I'd love to see Men's Volleyball be a sport at DoNU, the Title IX concerns probably won't let it happen.

Ice Hockey, on the other hand, is entirely doable, and is more of a rising star in college athletics than baseball. Plus, there's women's hockey, so you can alleviate any Title IX concerns by simply fielding a women's team, and making sure you roll those costs into the men's program, as it's the price to do proverbial business in the sport.

Hockey needs a big donation, its a very expensive sport. I have been thinking about what exactly a new AD would need to do first at NU. NU is at the bottom in terms of sports teams in the B1G. I was thinking a men's soccer team could be kinda cool with natural rivals at Creighton and UNO.

  11. I have been listening to people talk about coach Osborne, and thinking about him and what he has done since the anouncement of his retiring. There are few people if any who can match his accomplishments to a university and entire state. I have heard Bo Schemblecker mentioned and Barry Alverez is similar.

The thing I have been thinking about has more about the reasons he had for doing these things. In the world of ultra competitive coaching just look at JoPa to see what people will do to gain an edge. Coach Osborne is as selfless as a man can get. I don't believe he got into coaching for the glory. He left coaching to let Frank take the reins. He served a thankless job in Congress. He only came thank to be AD when asked. I can not think of anyone comparable to Coach Osborne and there never will be another. They broke the mold.

  12. I like our QB, haven't been able to say that in about 2 years.

Took the ball all the way down the field before half throwing the ball, and he did it again to open 2nd half. That makes the safties back up, then NU can run the ball again. NU dosen't win that game without Martinez throwing the ball.

  13. We played this whole game to stop the run and did it well. I would certainly hope so with 8 in the box most of the night. We saw that they have confidence in the secondary holding there own against an unproven QB. It's not like our guys were getting beat deep, mostly just good catches by their receivers. And we actually saw people tackle. Few things make me happier then seeing a receiver with zero YAC!

I was really down on our secondary after the game. Wisc really made hay with the PA deep ball, but limiting YAC is a positive.

  14. A lot of Nebraska fans don't get what it was that the man really brought to Nebraska- that is, he is as honest and humble of a man that'll you'll know- he wasn't perfect and said as much, but he not only believed in doing things the right way, he also displayed those beliefs in his actions- winning was really only a result of doing things the right way, or as people like to say "the Nebraska way".

The media wanted to paint him as a bad guy in the 90's and he will always be linked to "LP" but those who have read his books and observed his manner over 35+ years will tell you that the LP thing was handled by Tom as best as he knew how and "winning" wasn't part of the reason he let LP play in the bowl game.

I also want to say thanks to all the knuckleheads that DIDN'T understand he was as honest of a politician as anyone will ever see, and because there are always 50% of any population that votes without any real thought as to who they're voting for, Tom Osborne wasn't elected to lead the state, and instead was available to right the Nebraska Football ship when it was going down faster than the Titanic.

    God Bless Tom Osborne

Think how tough it would have been if he had been elected gov.

Listening to 590 and Mitch Sherman yesterday. When he retired in '97 coaching was easier for him than it had ever been, and he retired because he had made a promise to Frank. He gave it up because he had made a promise. I didn't know that, cool dude.

  15. This would not help us stop the run. The NFL is not the B1G. Eric Martin does have a set of skills that a creative coach could use. He can come off the edge or move to inside LB and cover better than Compton. He needs to be on the field every snap.
