  1. Watching aTm and OU I was impressed with the defensive performance of aTm. Their front seven looked completely different than earlier in the year. They looked at times disorganized offensively, but seemed capable of big plays. They really seem like a different team than when I saw them earlier in the year. Im not sure how good they are, but it'll be a big game.

  2. I hate ISU, but I love Paul Rhodes. I knew ISU would come to play. Even though they were beat on talent from the top of the roster to the bottom. ISU made a consistent effort to run the ball and did a good job of tackling. That makes for a long day with a 3rd string QB.

  3. I have noticed something about our D I'd like to share with you guys.

Maybe it's just me, but the Peso we run just seems to put our defenders into a real disadvantage, spatially, as far as shutting down the run. I've noticed the Peso back (usually Hagg) goes out, if the O comes out with a slot man, to cover said slot guy. That leaves us with SIX in the box (I don't count safeties cheating up, unless they're REALLY cheating up, like in a goal line situation, where they're not afraid of getting burnt deep). Six in the box, if the other team has 1 or possibly 2 tight ends, or like ISU did, an offset fullback, back there with the QB and RB, is not enough men to stop the run effectively. You'd need a Suh, Herculean-like effort, x2... from both your DT's... to get good penetration. Hell, our D-lineman reverted last nite and didn't get any penetration, period.

So, to stop the run with no line penetration and two linebackers alone in the box, to me, is just asking too much. I suppose having Hagg split out wide could theoretically help stop runs outside by forcing the ball carrier back inside, but on dive plays or right off tackle runs (where teams attack us), Hagg has to come ALL the way over to help on those plays, and he just can't physically get into the backfield fast enough to make tackles for lost. A track star couldn't.

Am I the only one who notices this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills... hope some of you guys can back me up and dispel that notion. It's like the Pelini Bros and Co. want to fit a square peg into a round hole by stopping the run well with the Peso. I know it shuts down passing pretty well, but if we get gashed like this in the run game, we need to try something else and stop being so stubborn.

Great post, and I agree with everything your saying. Bo seems to be willing to give up 6 yards a play without giving up the big play. Bo loves the dime, and it seems to be working although I would like to see another LB in the game. I guess I think adjustments may be needed, but the run isnt killing us. Trust in Bo.

  4. i invite you guys to go up to Bo and tell him he needs to find some true linebackers and change his defensive scheme because you dont like it. "who are you again"

A guy rushes for 100 and some yrds on 32 carries, i'll take that any day. Then youll be the same guy bitching that we are giving up 400yrds passing when we switch to a 3-4. Cant please everyone, even when we are having a great year.

They took advantage of Dennard being out with a true frosh and West...who royally sucks....good on them.

I agree. Its an ugly win, but a win is a win.

  5. what qb situation. Burkhead is now our third stringer haha. What a bust Green is . We need you back for the Aggies Taylor please.

How can you say he's a bust? Watson's playcalling completely handcuffed him today. Zone read right, left, center, punt isn't an offense. He threw the ball well today for the most part. The jury is still out on him, but get a new OC in and it could be a different story.

Now, the zone read play works w/Martinez due to his explosiveness. Green obviously lacks that burst, so it is upon the OC to call plays to his QB's strengths. A novel idea for a Calla-Clown disciple, who insists on ramming that square peg through that round hole, a'la Joe Daily.

I love Cody Green, the way he approaches every game, the way he makes himself available to the media every time. He is a valuable asset to this team.

He is also limits the offense. Wats called a conservative game today, and Green looked terrible on a couple pass plays but seemed to settle down later in the game. Im happy for Cody Green being able to contribute.

  6. I don't think that we will get much more than Santos if anything as far as LB. Moving to the Big 10 is going to effect how we recruit as well. We have to move away from smaller speedier LBs (David) and onto more physical LBs. We don't have many of those this year available. With the pick up of AG, I think we need to move Ward and Okafor to LBs anyways. They wont be seeing the field at the position they are at.

i don't think our defense will change substantially based upon the league switch, so long as we keep getting/developing the type of players that make it work.

I bet we will still see a lot of the peso in the Big X+II honestly. Other than the Buckeyes, Wisky and Michigan St. the rest of the teams primarily run some sort of variation of the spread offense. Hell Purdue's coach came out and said earlier this year that they are emulating Nebraska's offensive style since Marve got hurt. Illinois is in the same boat with Scheelhouse, who could become a stud, and we all know what Michigan will do with ShoeLaces.

I agree that most of the big 10 runs the spread, and see OSU running a spread about 50% of the time. Wisc, MSU, and Iowa dont run spread offenses. Also the Big 10 runs the spread with more emphasis on running out of the spread. Any way its besides the point. The peso is basically running the nickel as a base D, and the only reason to do this is because Eric Hagg is too good to sit. I think the peso will go away when NU has a OLB who is better than their nickel back.
