  1. Just thought I'd drop in and provide a little information on the type of workout they were doing. Forgive me if this is all a bit vague and jumbled, but it's been a while since I've done anything with S&C and am typing this on the quick. It's called a metabolic circuit. Google "metabolic circuit huskers" and the first result will be a pdf that explains it in pretty good depth, with a full breakdown of the lifts and work:rest ratios. It was developed and used by Nebraska in I believe the 90s, and continues to be the foundational program used by coaches belonging to the Epley/Arthur coaching tree. It is the "strength" component in a split program, which I'd wager coach Duval is using and looks essentially like this ("Heavy" and "Light" just means % of 1Rm used for weight):

Monday Light "Power" (e.g. Clean shrugs, Hang Clean; plyometrics and speed work on the field)

Tuesday Heavy "Strength" (e.g Metabolic circuit; agility on the field)

    Wednesday Off

    Thursday Heavy "Power"

    Friday Light "Strength"

It is a KILLER workout. The intensity of the lifts combined with the W:R ratio makes you feel like you are going to die. The closest thing I could compare it to is like the feeling after running a really hard 400 or 800 when you're not properly conditioned, only worse, for about 35 minutes. If you are in less than excellent shape you will not be able to complete it. Even guys who are in "good" shape will really struggle with it because of the unique and particular stress it imposes on the body. I believe at one point they wouldn't allow athletes to do it without first being in the S&C program for two years, and even after that they had to do a month's worth of preparatory workouts which were basically metabolic circuits-lite (2x10 vs 3x10, working at lower %1RM).

With all that said it will get results. It's almost like a cheat code for really jump starting physical development. Also, while it is akin to physical and psychological torture initially, you adapt to it pretty quick. I believe coach Duval said something to the effect that guys would be in survival mode at first, then later being able to really grab the reins and push it. That's a pretty accurate description of what the athletes will experience

  2. Just gonna reiterate what most have said. Newby get's what his blocking gives him, and NOTHING more. He rarely, if ever, makes the first guy miss or breaks a tackle. He also has no burst (a trait sorely and sadly lacking by all the backs we seen this year). He's the definition of average, except as a pass catcher, where he is pretty savvy and has some nice hands.

  3. The point is Nebraska needs to do a better job of evalutating in-state talent. It was probably easier when Osborne (and Solich) were still here because they had long relationships with in-state coaches and likely had a good idea of who to trust when they got a call about a prospect. Hell, throw some more money at the problem; recruiting is one area where staff isn't limited. Get to know the in-state coaches and get on the same page as them so you can use their player evaluations to help shape your in-state recruiting.

The other thing is we need to develop players better. What kids come in as is one thing. But as the article points out, with good development they can be a much better player after a couple years of good coaching and development.

    Boom. Exactly.

  4. Gerry played hard last night. He hasnt been. Its even more clear now. Byt last night he played hard. And 25 was gettin into some sh#t. Its just too bad his skillset doesnt match tis system. But last night he did what he could. I appeeciate that. I appreciate guys who make right. I hope he keeps it goin.

Ya idk why he's been playing basically the free. He'd be a ridiculous box/strong safety and will be in the NFL, but he lacks the fluidity and burst you want from a FS. Like everyone in this secondary, his ball skills suck hardcore, but with some good coaching that can be fixed.

  5.

Led the team with 14 tackles tonight - 9 solo. 4 more than the next highest player. Added two pass breakups (team high).

He hasn't played as well as I expected him to but the trashing on his is completely over the top.

    Word.

For his inconsistent and sometimes poor play, he's been far and away the best player in the secondary.

  6. I never really felt Bo did much with the high star guys he did recruit. There are exceptions, I just feel that was the norm for him.

One of the USC guys hypothesized that perhaps Bo favored the lower ranked guys because that's what he was as a player... Under the radar, scrappy. Pretty farfetched, but interesting nonetheless.

That is such a ridiculous and unfounded proposition. Doesn't surprise me much. While fun to listen to, the USC guys are not the most knowledgeable bunch. Constantly contradicting themselves.

  7. I'm really surprised how few hole the OL has opened up on the few running plays. Come on guys, move somebody.

That would be surprising if it was true. For the most part they are moving people. Every yard Newby has gained has come as a result of blocking. If he had any burst of toughness we'd be creasing them. The line aint pipeline good but they're just fine.

  8. In regards to the demands placed on our db's being a reason for struggles against the pass, I really haven't seen too many blown assignments. That shows they know what they are doing. What they really struggle with (and I mean REALLY STRUGGLE, like worst I've ever seen) is with their ball skills. Coverage is usually pretty good to excellent. Just bat it down man. Just bat it down... (looking at you Jonathan Rose and Cockerill)

  9. Tommy is the least of our problems and I'm surprisingly pleased with him. He is with out question the leader of this team. He is constantly holding his teammates accountable. This offense would be 2009 bad with out him.

His footwork could use a little work, but people harp on that too much. His arm means his footwork doesn't need to be so polish (see Farve and Aaron Rodgers as good examples). He just needs to be smarter about his throws and not force those long balls.

Just to argue, his footwork is a major issue. That's pretty much exclusively why he's a 50% (and lately worse) passer, missing many receivers that could have extended drives or gotten points. That has to priority numbero uno for him if he ever wants to be better than average-sometimes good.

  10. It is what it is at this point. You are what you practice, and that mostly comes in the spring and fall camps. To do any major shifting in offensive identity would pretty much result in even worse struggles. I've seen it happen in the NFL with talented professionals.

  11. I can understand why you guys might feel this way, but Tommy is the only hope we have at QB right now. It should also be apparent that while he's far from perfect, he gives a lot to the team.

If we had viable backup options, might it eventually be time to start the conversation about the QB who can't stop throwing off his back foot? Sure. But I don't think we do.

I will say that after these past two games, the offensive coaches need to figure out a better way to work with what they've got. The offense has been hot/cold in a number of games this year. And while the early season focus has been on a struggling defense, it's now the offense that is not carrying the weight. To win games -- better yet, to put them away before the closing minutes -- you need to score points.

And there's the rub. More than likely he is the best we have.

None of those coaches inherited a team that had nine wins the previous year. None of those coaches had career 500 records

And all of the coaches were in recruiting hot beds and already stacked. Nebraska is not.

Haha, comparing Mike Riley to Pete Carroll. I've seen every Seahawks game, preseason or otherwise since RW was drafted. You could not find two more opposite football teams in the way they play and the way they are composed. In fact, while watching the game today I just kept shaking my head thinking about just that.

  13. Nine wins is all i hear about pelini. but did he have any signature wins? yes he won the expected games but to win the signature wins takes coaching. in those losses he was out coached. with pelini we were not going to see anymore improvement. you were not going to see any big 10 championships and definitely not a national title. and yes the embarassment of his sideline antics. Do we so soon forget his remarks after he was no longer here? Solich was let go for reasons other then coaching performance which was the reason for his short tenure. Callahan was let go for coaching performance after 5 years?. Pelini was let go for a little of both after 5 years. Mike Riley is owed 3 - 5 years before we should make a decision as to performance. Until then lets support him. there are good things happening if we can see past this temporary win/loss ratio.

Oklahoma, Michigan State, Missouri, Oklahoma State. All nice wins that were stepping stones to what was almost a breakthrough. Imagine how things could've been different had 1 second not been put back up, or Taylor Martinez hadn't got hurt as a freshman. He was quite close. Oddly enough and food for thought, the beginnings of Bo's end came with the switch to the Big 10. All that said, it was time for him to go. I was, however, under the impression that we were making a switch because we were quite close to being where we wanted to be, but just needed something/someone to take us over the edge. Instead, we got a rebuilding project that may or may not work. Is what it is, just wasn't what I, or many others I imagine, expected. Thus, the complete WTF reaction to current affairs.

sign of desperation, in my opinion. What has changed over the last 5 weeks that now, all of the sudden, convinces the coaching staff to burn his red shirt? They are searching for lightning in a bottle.

So what? He clearly needs to win before someone starts putting For Sale signs in front of the house he just moved into a week ago. He has to do whatever is necessary to win. That's what we all want.

No bitching about Lewis playing, no bitching about burning redshirts. He must win by all means necessary now, according to some.

Ha! They bitch when he doesn't do everything he can to win, so he talks about utilizing players he thinks can help the team win, and they're pissed that he's burning a redshirt.

Man, it's like moron is the new plague and it's hitting Huskerboard hard.

The real question is whether they truly feel Stevenson is such an upgrade that he will help us win. That will bear itself out based on his usage and/or success. To me, it looks like they're throwing the proverbial sh** at the wall and hoping it sticks, ie desperation. Hell, we seen a decent amount of 5 different backs already. Figure it out fellas. Conference play shouldn't be the time for position battles.

  15.

Before the season I would have said 7, which is really pushing it because why exactly did we fire our last coach? Because we were looking for someone to take us to the next level. I maintained there was enough talent on this team to win the Big 10 West the last couple of years, and felt that with the right hire we could maximize that and immediately make a push this year with 10-11 wins. Sadly, guys who performed well in the past appear to have regressed and few look as though they have gotten better. It's now looking like a complete rebuilding job, and one that has us moving away from what Nebraska has traditionally done, which is a darn shame. As things stand now, I'll say 5 wins, only because I find it hard to believe the higher ups will fire a guy after only one year. That's pathetic. When you can't beat Illinois, a team not even in the same stratosphere as Nebraska in terms of talent, you are in a sad position indeed.

My comments are not aimed at you, but the bolded kills me. The guy took over a 9 win program and we are now dumpster fire. The clown can't even get out of his own way. Did you see the stats on ESPN? Per mathematical calculations, the chance for NU to lose against BYU in that last second was 98.5%. The chances to lose to Illinois in the last 55 seconds? 99.5%.

We have been saddled with some also ran whose best years are behind him. A .536 coach at a mid tier OSU. Why did I ever think this "experienced" guy was worth a win or two. We are dead last in pass defense. Dead friggin last. First time 2-3 since 1959 IIRC. This guy inherited talent, an easy schedule and a fanatically loyal fan base, some of the best facilities in the nation, one of the greatest coaches to coach the game, alumni who succeeded at the collegiate level and beyond and he is failing.........miserably.

There is not a magic number for me. Finish the season, fire some of your buddies and we can talk. Same deal Frank got and wasn't fulfilled. IMO, he fired the right guys, went 10-3 and got screwed. I'd give Riley the same option. Now. Let him start shopping. Oz got 71 yards on 7 carries. WTH! And Langs presser shows why that was all. He has no clue how to use a running game. You don't think recruits are watching this?

I will not be surprised if we go 4-8 this year. Maybe even lose out.

I agree with everything you said. It is sickening and didn't have to be this way if the right hire was made. This was not a team that needed to rebuild, it just needed a new and better voice to take that next step.
