  1. Sometimes if you have a good matchup on a deep pattern you just take a chance and trust the receiver, who should have way better ball skills than the defensive back, to make a play. On paper, anytime you have a 1on1 matchup with a guy like Q you take a chance.

  2. Hope TA finds a QB coach in the summer like Trent Dilfer, the manning camp, or martinez's coach to work on his passing mechanics. I feel he can be a really good QB if he just gets better as a passer

Not disagreeing with the idea, but GOD NO! I want as little Dilfer stink as possible on the program.

  3. Outside of the pick and a few inaccurate throws late, he was money. Several dropped throws, including an absolute dime that would've been for a touchdown. Unless Stanton is crazy good, Armstrong has got to be your guy. An entire offseason of reps and growing in knowledge of the offense and he could be very good.

  4. Back to the QBs...

Got to say, I am simply not buying that Stanton is as good of a passer as he is a runner. The nickname means his reputation is as a tough runner, not as a passer.

If he ran like Tebow and had impressive throwing ability to go with it... he would have received higher ratings from the recruiting services. Rivals indicated he was a three star. We tried for higher rated QBs and struck out so we went for Stanton.

Now he might turn out to be a great QB. Hard to tell as we haven't seen him. But the book on him says RUNNER first and passer second.

Don't care about stars, or the Elite 11 for that matter. He was not a very good passer in high school. Doesn't mean he can't improve, and it also doesn't mean he can't be a very good college player despite average arm ability. Decision making, leadership, and timely play making are what put quarterbacks over the top, and I think Johnny can bring that. Tebow's a good comparison, but I think Rex Burkhead at the quarterback position. Nothing that blows you away, but someone who just makes plays that win games. As far as recruiting qbs, I love Darlington, don't think Flowers is best suited at quarterback, and wish we would've given Stick an offer. He's much better than Fyfe (who I saw several times in high school and was really impressed), Kellogg, and Marsh (who we offered a grayshirt if I remember correctly).

What are you basing this on? That he didn't throw for a lot of yards?

He threw for 2400 yards as a junior in a running offense. His senior year, he was completing 66% of his passes with 11 TDs and 3 INTs before he got hurt. By all accounts, he has been a very accurate passer in practice this year. So I'm left to assume that you're just set on talking him down.

Basing it off of what I see. His footwork is terrible, the arm motion is obviously not great, he lacks real zip on anything, and his accuracy is really spotty past about 10 yards. Again, not saying he's going to be terrible, or an ineffective passer. I actually think he could be a really good player, and in this offense you don't have to be anything special as a passer to be effective, i.e. lot's of screens, short passes, easy throws etc. Watch this whole video and tell me outside of maybe 1-2 throws that are bigtime. His final stats are impressive, but about 90% of the yards came from easy 0-10 yard throws with a ton of YAC.

  6. Love this guy and his passion for wanting to play here. Only problems I see that noticeably stand out is he tends to stand straight up on plays and relying on his size advantage. He needs to be coached to not do that or olinemen will have him on his heels. Other wise excited for this kid in the future.

Gaining leverage against big strong boys is going to be a challenge for him. It can be taught to an extent, but certain guys are much better at knee bending and creating a good base than others. Newell almost appears a bit stiff and plays very upright. That is what concerns me. Even at the D1 level though, some guys can dominate based off strength and athleticism alone (see Vernon Gholston). Newell is a freak.

  7. Im not arguing against you, the 40 yard dash time is the most lied about and inaccurately tested thing on the planet. 4.4 times in HS are lies 99% of the time, someone talking 4.3 or 4.2- those are whoppers, make me laugh

One year I was working with a guy who claimed he had a 4.4 and 4.3 kid- that same year the fastest time recorded for the NU squad was a tad over 4.5,, yeah right.

Lateral speed is huge, explosiveness, change of direction, field vision, hip level, balance, ability to run through contact- all important

All determined by what a kid can put on film with pads on, on grass

I hope Strong is the next big thing, love local kids doing well. But my guess is Rex and Ameer were playing in Texas and Alabama probably against better competition than South, Benson, Bryan etc

Enjoying the hell out of your posts. I played football for 11 years and coached for 7. People throwing around these 40 times like there a dime a dozen isn't accurate. The only person I think I have heard of with a super low 40 time is Deon Sanders at the combine....I think.

Bo Jackson still holds the record. 4.18 40

they actually claimed he did a 4.12, and then did a 4.18 the next week. 40s weren't electronically timed at the NFL combine or pretty much anywhere else until 1999 though, so anything timed before that is up for debate. since 1999, there have only been 18 official 40 times at the combine of 4.30 or under. one of which was by our very own fabian washington at 4.29. the record is 4.24 held by chris johnson in 2008 and rondel melendez in 1999. to echo what a few people said earlier, the 40 is an extremely overrated statistic that when not electronically timed is extremely subjective. it also greatly favors people who have been trained to run it. one of those 18 i mentioned earlier is marquise goodwin from texas with a 4.27, who represented team USA for track and field in the olympics. he has obviously been taught the correct technique. does anyone really think kids in high school are running a time as good as his?

edit: deion sanders allegedly ran a 4.27 in 1989. i'm sure that one is fairly close to right, but 4.1anything is laughable at best.

Good points. I'm sure Bo didn't run sub 4.2, but if anyone could have done it, it would've been him, Deion, or Darrell Green.
