  1. Good read.

Osborne was too calm, too nice a guy, didn't run the right offense, didn't run the right defense, wasn't playing the right players - take everything said about Mike Riley and his coaching staff right now and the same things were being said about Osborne all those years ago.

  2. We made the ? category.

    WINNERS?

Nebraska. Mike Riley is a great guy who may turn out to be great coach in Lincoln, where it is far easier to win than at Oregon State. But he’s a 61-year-old guy in unfamiliar territory, and the best stretch of his coaching career was 2006-09 – basically ancient history in 2015. We’ll see.

Biggest winners and losers from the college football coaching carousel

  3. Why is it that everyone wants to hire a coach for tens of millions of dollars because that is the only way that we can become an elite program again? When LSU hired Nick Saban in 1999 (coming from Michigan State), I bet many LSU fans were not thrilled (like many on these boards) because he didn't have a national championship trophy under his belt; or when Urban Meyer was hired at Florida (coming from Utah) for the same reason. Why not give Riley a chance to prove himself before making an assumption that because he doesn't have a national championship at Oregon State (lol!) that he will automatically fail to bring one to Nebraska.

  4.

    Perception vs reality

In September, many members of the media, led by ESPN, declared the Big Ten dead. Those same individuals boasted that the SEC West the greatest division in the history of CFB. The problem was, that entire argument was based on the flaw of pre-season rankings and biased perception. It was given “validation” due to A&M’s blowout victory over South Carolina, and was used to boost both Mississippi schools, and Alabama into the top tiers of the rankings.

Under the old BCS system, we would have had an Alabama vs Florida State matchup. Why? Because of the perception of SEC strength, based mostly on circular logic. Yes they won 7 straight, but they also got the benefit of the doubt to even play in the title game over comparable teams. Yesterday’s 2 games show how flawed this system was, and there’s little doubt that with a 4 team playoff, the 7 MNC streak would have never happened. No more title game layups, and no more automatic entry.

It was a huge day for the conference, and CFB in general. The SEC was exposed, even with the “SEC fatigue” excuses. Plus, the B1G was validated as extremely underrated. Part of it is due to increased play by the B1G teams, and part is simply due to more balanced match ups. The SEC stranglehold is over, and I think you’ll see a more balanced playing field in the future.

Hah, I was going to post that very same idea that with a 4 team playoff, the likelihood that the SEC would have came out on top all of those years would have been a lot less likely.

  5.

What the excuse for Alabama? Played past their bedtime?

For Auburn it was "SEC fatigue". I guess the tough schedule they had playing big boys week after week......

I loved that being the reason the SEC was doing poorly but in years they win most of their bowl games it is due to their superior league.

  6. I want to see competitive (no blow out losses or giving up 400+ yards rushing to one back), competent football with no sideline sideshows or off the field antics by the coach.

A conference championship and football playoff in the first year might be asking a bit much but in the next three years I would hope to see that.

  7. GT rushed for a Orange Bowl record 452 yards against a SEC team; the option can still work in college football but everyone jumped to the spread to run up the scores which sells more tickets. I for one would love to see us go back to running it with play action out of the pro set. The look on opposing teams defenses was classic when they knew what was coming and could not do anything to stop it.

  8. If this was posted before apologies, couldn't find any reference to it on the boards and wanted to share. From what I have researched, looks like Riley was able to beat him two times.

"Note what Harbaugh said of Mike Riley in October of 2007, when Stanford was preparing to play Oregon State.

"When you try to think of the top five people you know in this world, there's no doubt about it that Mike Riley is in that top five. He's just a tremendous person," Harbaugh said then, in this San Francisco Chronicle story. "Knowing coach Riley is knowing how well our team is going to have to be prepared to be in a position to compete with his ballclub.""

I don't like the five conference champions getting an automatic invite. I've always liked the thought of having a model like the BCS choose the top however many teams. I haven't been a fan of the committee since it was announced. There's too many biases. At least the BCS format took some of the bias out with part of it being computer generated.

I agree with the conference champions (Big5) getting automatic bids. You could have a conference champion some year with 3 or 4 losses but they could actually be the best team in the country due to the difficulty of their conference (or they could suck and lose in the first round).

You would have been completely fine in 2012 granting Wisconsin an automatic berth because they won the B1G despite being unranked?

Point taken, but at the same time can you imagine a SEC where the conference champion might lose 3 games, be outside the top 8 but in all probability, be the best team in the country and win the national championship had they gotten in? I guess there simply is no foolproof method.

  11. I am one that agrees with Troy, at the current 4 teams no team outside of the Big5 (maybe Notre Dame) will ever get in. I would prefer 8, not too watered down which 16 or more teams would do (and basically make the regular season worthless), but also enough to allow for the occasional Boise to slip in.

“There’s no doubt that it’s all set up for five conferences, as it is,” Calhoun said per the Colorado Springs Gazette. “You’ve got to be in one of those five conferences. It’s un-American, bottom line. We live in a country where upward mobility is possible, where games should be played out on the field.”
