  1. Fremont has more than 20 lakes in the Fremont State Lakes recreation area, and there was a time when it was a pretty big draw. Lake Ventura is the water skiing lake, but we never went there - we always went to Lake 20 or one of the others to fish. Those lakes are old sand quarries, and the area around them is still pretty saturated with sand.

I haven't been in that area for over 20 years, but it was pretty run-down when I lived in Fremont. I can only imagine what it's like if they haven't made improvements since.

About the coolest thing from the Fremont State Lakes is that bald eagles will sometimes hang out there in the winter. We would drive through some of the lanes between the lakes and see 10-15 of them, huge birds hanging out in the trees.

Bald eagles nest there all year, we used to take campers on airboat tours up and down the Platte in the summer and see lots of cool wildlife. Fremont has a lot going for it if it weren't...well...Fremont.

  2. I'm with you on the distaste for Fremont. I worked at a camp outside that place for 7 years. The Fremont Wal*Mart at 1am is like a dream you'd have after eating a bunch of Taco Bell and chasing it with some Ambien.

It's a town in it's own little bubble, it seems like. And the cops...

I find your comments about Walmart kind of funny. When I go to Walmart here, I am more disgusted with many of the white people there than hardly any of the hispanics.

I'm confused. I didn't mention race at all, nor did I mean to imply anything to do with race.

(Was it because I mentioned Taco Bell? Because Taco Bell is about as hispanic as fortune cookies are Chinese.)

  3. I'm not sure I'd equate that two year old recording in the aftermath of a game and press conference of how Pelini treats people in private. He was still in full coach mode with the tape.

Exactly. If half the things I said while playing Mario Kart were perceived as the way I honestly consistently feel about my family, friends, princess Peach, bananas, etc., people would probably think I was an angry jerk, but thankfully no one cares enough to record/leak that kind of thing. I'd rather no one passes judgement on me by my actions in my worst moment, so I ought not do it either.

difference is he gets paid 3 million dollars a year and represent Nebraska. how much per year do you get paid playing Mario Kart?

The fact that he is in a high-dollar, high-profile profession is why people notice and care. But it doesn't make his angry outburst any more of a reflection of his true character, IMO.

  5. So the Twin Cities had some kind of record for the month of January for subzero temperature days. Yesterday it got to 18 and last night the weather segment of the news had a lead in that said Cold Air Returns.

I didn't realize it ever left.

I have a lot of family in MN, and back when Atlanta was freaking out because it was 30 degrees (or something therabouts), my cousin made the comment, "It was 30 degrees here today and my kids were mad that I still made them wear coats to school."

  6. What's weird is the vigilantes might actually be less inept (more ept?) than the regular police force. At least for a while. But my guess is, if the cartels can corrupt the Mexican police, they can corrupt the legitimized-but-probably-not-paid-a-salary vigilante force. I'll have to ask my friend about this, she lives in a pretty crappy part of Mexico doing missionary work.
