  1.

It's not even limited to just D1 athletes. Everybody wants to know what other people think of them. If you're doing something you love to do, you need to know how you're doing. And part of that comes from how other people evaluate your performance.

As far as not even reading message boards or Twitter in the first place, that's much easier to say than do. It's impossible to shut someone who is so heavily dependent on social media out of social media.

Can they handle negative criticism better? I think they handle negative criticism well enough; I don't think that's the issue. I think when we call out that Nebraska has a turnover problem that it doesn't come as a surprise to the team and offends them. The issue, I believe, comes when we say Kenny Bell sucks because he has an afro; maybe if he would get a better haircut he would catch passes better. Stuff like that.

Agreed. It's when Bob McFootball misses the game-winning catch and someone makes a post about the merits of pushing him in front of a train. And thankfully Huskerboard frowns on that.

  2. I think that the Pinn, right now, MAYBE brings an edge over memorial. I love basketball probably more than the average Nebraskan (I liked husker hoops before it was cool, guys.) With our shiny new arena and our shiny new Tim Miles, people are coming in droves. Which is awesome (I guess, although being a hipster I liked it when less people showed up to games and I could sneak down to better seats after the first half). But the Bob wasn't a very intimidating house to come into, and the PBA (or the pinn, or the bank, or "what's that weird space ship by the trains daddy?") wouldn't be without the crowds. And I'm not super convinced the crowds will remain this high, although things are certainly looking up.

I still voted for Memorial because it's consistently sold out and consistently has lots of people. PBA is new and still swathed in mystery.

  3. I've been kicking around the idea for a while now that King Tom did the fans no favors by retiring at the peak of his career.

As Harvey Dent once said, you either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. I know you think he made the right decision, and I do too. Going out on top was the right move for him. We've seen plenty of instances where coaches stick around probably longer than they should, despite having success (Phil Fulmer and Bobby Bowden come to mind).

If TO had taken over after Callahan, there's way too many what ifs involved for me to think we could have an honest discussion. Now, I do think we probably pull in another championship or two if TO stays on awhile longer than '97.

I agree, there are way too many ifs involved. But the main "if" i'm concerned with is, would the fans be having this discussion if the record remained the same?

I think this sums up Bo's press conference after Iowa.

Schizophrenia (/ˌskɪtsɵˈfrɛniə/ or /ˌskɪtsɵˈfrniə/) is a mental disorder characterized by a breakdown of thought processes and by impaired emotional responses.[1] Common symptoms include delusions, such as paranoid beliefs; hallucinations; disorganized thinking; and negative symptoms, such as blunted affect and avolition. Schizophrenia causes significant social and vocational dysfunction

My point is that none of those symptoms are multiple identities\personalities, as was originally implied.

  5. I've been kicking around the idea for a while now that King Tom did the fans no favors by retiring at the peak of his career. Now, I revere Mr. Osborne and definitely agree with his decision to retire when he did, but I sometimes feel like some of our complaints are still the reverberations of 1997. He retired after that third MNC, and it sometimes seems like some people think if he were still coaching today, we'd have 16 more national championships.

If Osborne had taken back over as HC after the firing of Callahan and had the record we have today, would people still feel the way we do? Should it matter?

Am I saying Bo is Tom Osborne? No. But I am intrigued by how our fandom works.

  6. I volunteered at the PCM distribution center (over on O st.), I can't remember if I had to do a background check or just fill out a little application. That's a great place to volunteer, just folding clothes or helping them sort through donations they get.

City Impact is a bit smaller of an organization, if you can get a job with them doing something not really working with people (I put stamps on envelopes for their mail campaign) you shouldn't need a background check.

If it were the holidays, you could ring bells for the salvation army. Otherwise they might have some other things going on you could help out with.

Just a warning, the humane society will straight up ask if you're volunteering as a temporary thing just for volunteer hours; if you are they give you jobs like cleaning up poop and cleaning out cages. My bro volunteers for them in his spare time and he basically just plays with cats the whole time, "socializing" them :)
