  1. ^And the point of that is the O-line has been marginal for an extended period of time. Cotton has not shown the ability to produce upper-tier performances from the position. He's had plenty of time. More than enough.

  2. Cotton has done an excellent job with the line on his own. Looking at next year's roster, we're gonna have road-grader quality linemen and at least two draft picks.

    Or not.

SO much talent in so many positions on that side of the ball. But the most important unit looks thin yet AGAIN. (Just a rather pointless toss off here, QB is the most important position on O to me, and the line is the most important unit. And if I could have all-world talent at QB or across the line, I'll take the line, every time.)

Hell, Jackson definitely proved me wrong. I thought starting a guy at center who was playing D-line the year before spelled death, and that kid had a nice season. I'm just uncharacteristically pessimistic overall lately it seems...and I still feel like, when you look at our roster, the O-line is going to be an average unit next year. No better.

  3. I see you have 30 committed recruits for 2013, per Rivals. And A&M fitting into your sleazy little cabal nicely with 33 of their own. Don't forget your "SEC" chant when your weasel comrades win by way of your patented grease bag maneuverings. Do you all really think you're just that much better? Or do you all acknowledge the blatant disregard for operating with integrity, and just feel no shame over it?

Seriously never thought I wouldn't LOVE college football season. At this point, I almost think we're idiots if we're still following the rules.

IIRC, there was a recent study done showing recruit classes from 2000-2010 as it relates to the number of back-to-back classes with more than 28 recruits. The SEC had 54. The Big 10 had 18. So yea, folks who say it doesn't help to over recruit are crazy. It is easy to get great recruit classes when you are over signing by 8-10 kids and then pull for lack of performing.

Look at NU this year. 20+ OL schollies and we started 3 walk-ons. The SEC, those 20+ would probably now be about 8-10. Those freed up would be used for others. same with our DL. IIRC we have 11 DT's on schollie, but we had to move Cam to there against Wisky as we had no one else. Again, in the SEC, half these guys would be gone.

SEC plays by a different set of rules and it shows. If we recruited (over signed) by 8-10 guys a class, we could build depth as guys who don;t pan out are canned and other guys are kept. I do not agree with this. I think once offered, they stay on schollie until the leave, quit or are let go (kicked off). Until something is truly done, the "supremacy" (ie cheating) of the SEC will remain.

Yep. It's simplistic enough for a grade school math student to understand. Breach the established, agreed upon numeric limits and you immediately see massive gains in success percentages. What does that mean?

It means if Curt Dukes or Harrison Beck or Bubba Starling or Carl Crawford don't end up working our for you, the extra guy who you weren't supposed to be allowed to bring in may turn out to be Colin Klein or Drew Brees.

And they pay those kids. Auburn flat bought their NC. And I'd wager enough money that I could afford to lose were my intuition wrong that Tevin Mitchell's mom got basically a no-show job, after which the kid committed to Arkansas.

I am honest to god starting to feel apathy towards something I've adored my whole life. Because it's turning into a f'ing joke. The SEC is John Calipari. As CBB became a seedy underworld of AAU herders and all sorts of other murky, shady dealings, football has began to go the same way. And the reason is because no one in the national media seems to give one flying f#*k about the fact that SEC performance levels over the last 7 years are akin to one man winning the lottery 7 years straight during which millions played. The math doesn't work. It's not an anomaly. There is a reason for SEC dominance. It is called loading the dice, corking the bat, or any other similar term you may prefer. Sickening.

  4. I'm all for gun elimination. Just as long as the police, the army, and the rest of the world do the same.

Until that happens, I'm going to be convinced that the government has a good reason for wanting to take firearms out of our hands. I'll let you hypothesize why they may desire a citizenry bereft of these means of defense. And I am not a card carrying NRA member by any means.

I see a recurring trend. The US government immediately seizing upon a tragedy that has afflicted our citizens, and using it to propel measures which extend the reach and control of federal liberties over the masses. (Safeguarded by intentionally opaque protections like circumstances in which warrants are no longer required to breach the privacy of anyone deemed dangerous. Deemed by whom, you may ask? Might as well not.) Eleven years straight. And since the "color threat gauge" system has been disbanded, I'll just assume it means that for over a decade now we haven't been in the "safe" range.

Anybody else starting to get jittery? Like...maybe we don't actually have a two party system after all? Maybe it's just one? Just positing a theory.

Off topic, but one last question: Why are the "frank" discussions between Obama and Boehner not televised? I propose that they absolutely should be, under demand of the citizens of the United States of America.

  5. Miles knows this year is a write off. I hate to say it, but it's the truth. We'll have at least 4 different starters next year, prob even the whole five. Still going to the home games this year, though. Gotta be there for the final go round at the Bob.

  7. Yup....I'm afraid it's gonna be a loooooog season, guys. Next year's roster will be completely different too, so 2012-13 seems weirdly transitory already. Not trying to be negative or throw the towel in already, just not very optimistic. (For pretty obvious reasons.) Feels familiar...like baseball season for us Cubs fans. Three and a half weeks in, and we start thinking about next year.

No matter what the point total is at the end of the second half, Oregon loses regardless. Because they have to play on that abomination. Seriously...who signed off on that?

    "Bill?"

    "Looks good!"

"Uh, Bill? We're all over here."

"I said 'looks good.' Can't you all see I've got a pretty good buzz going here? Can't you just kinda...go away? My dog is asleep. No. My foot...it's dead. What? I said my dog is dead and I can't walk! (Indecipherable aggressive sounding mumbles)

*This is actually what happened. Guy ended up leaving Nike Pacific Northwest Division or whatever it's called, and now works at Sea World. Couldn't be happier. Drinks every day. Takes a TON of mescaline. Actually...it's me. I work at Sea World.

(Man...I need Nebraska to get a lot better. This is potentially the most idiotic thing I've ever posted on the board. Still gonna do it. f#*k it.)

  8. Reminds me of the time I heard Calipari on some radio call in show talking about a few plays he regretted from the KU-Memphis championship game. How if he'd done something differently, Memphis might have won. I thought, didn't your team forfeit that entire season? Do you really wish that you had won that game?

John Calipari is basically numbers 1-999 on the list of reasons why college basketball is seedy as sin. And he's basically the face of the sport. Sweet

Anyways, get this gd game off already...

  9. Interesting views on McDermott expressed in here. I turned to my buddy numerous times last night and said, "well, hard to stop that. Dammit...that kid is good, gotta admit."

Seeing him in person, he's bigger than I thought. And what makes him good is that he just seems to intuitively know how to get the ball in the basket. It's not pretty a lot of the times...he scores a lot of workmanlike baskets in the paint. You don't get additional points for aesthetics though.

And he's got range, obviously. Honestly, we all know that game was pretty much going one way about ten minutes into the first half. At one point, we were trailing by a decent margin, and someone (Talley, maybe? Who had a tough game, btw) hit a three, and Doug marches down court and IMMEDIATELY drains a three, just steps up and swishes it like he was taking a drink of water. I'm a Husker guy period. From my vantage point, Doug McDermott is the real deal. He might not be a back to back national AA, but the kid isn't overhyped. He's legit.

This season will be tough. A huge percentage of our offense is going to have to be supplied by Talley and Gallegos. And when we start playing the really good teams, both of those guys are going to be hot for us to pull out a win. Last night neither guy had his game going, and we see the result. We've got three kids redshirting who would play substantial minutes if they could this season, and we'll be bringing in an upper tier guard next season.

Guys....we're gonna have to do our best to force ourselves to be patient this year. But I think we all knew that anyway.

EDIT: I didn't mean Creighton isn't one of those really good teams, btw. I mean, that's basically what played out. Dylan struggled offensively and Gallegos didn't do much. (And he was confusingly kept off the court quite a bit, I thought anyway.)

  10. i guess you are much smarter than me for chopping my own words, making them into what you wish to read, and then trying to belittle me. dont remember writing anything about coaching here is the same as living in a cage? but whatever ha

Yeah, what the hell was I reading? I think I was trying to respond to something else, and got screwed up or something. What you wrote was totally reasonable. Haha....I'm an idiot.

And that was your first post here too, wasn't it?! God, I suck. Well, welcome to HuskerBoard. We hate everyone.

+1 for the horrible welcome. Sorry about that!

  11. i dont understand why a coach who is winning 9 plus games a season since his start, is such a hated figure by fans...people make a point to say it would be impossible to fill his position because coaching on pins and needles is far from a dream job, no matter how far the "checkbook" is open. you dont like him or you do, how about just being a faithful fan and supporting a team, win or lose. if the guy wants to leave, i guess you cant blame him..

There are more inaccurate statements in this post that seem possible within the number of words that you used.

Gene Chizik won a NC two years ago, and he's currently out of a job. Bo was brought in with defense specifically in mind, and this year featured some pretty dubious, historically bad defensive performances. (See my past posts about Bo regarding my impression of him. I've been very, very supportive, and remain so.)

So please spare me the nonsense about how coaching at Nebraska is like being trapped in a rusty cage with thousands of snarling, starving words surrounding you for as far as the eye can see. Ridiculous, baseless assertion.

  12. I've said this every year his name comes up during the carousel month. If Bo isn't happy here, then I'm okay with him looking for another job. I like Bo. Always have. Wild mood swings, be damned. Having said that, I too, want someone that wants to be here. If Bo is just biding his time in hopes of landing elsewhere, then it's time our AD step in and help him land somewhere else. It'd be in everyone's best interest.

I'd +100 if I could on this. These are exactly my sentiments.

Yep. I used the only one I could on it too. Could not have summed up my thoughts any better.

It would have been like 6 long, dragging, endless paragraphs. And we've all seen enough of those  (Unfortunately, there will be more to come. Try as I might, succinct expression just continues to elude me.)

*One note: I thought Eichorst coming in could lead us down this path. Wouldn't have bet on it, wasn't even strongly suspecting Pelini may not be the guy going forward after Tom stepped aside...it was more of a whisper in the back of my mind that I filed away. I don't want Bo to leave, but...well...Nexus already said it.

  13. Might as well get it started...unless I'm an idiot and missed another thread already started. If so, delete and disregard. Just like my wife does.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm jacked up for this game. The Bob is going to be electric...there will be an awful lot of Creighton fans there too, so the potential for a wild environment definitely exists. (Unless CU comes out and stomps on NU early and never let the Huskers get into the game. Which, let's be honest, could happen.)

I don't hate Creighton, and I always bristle at the people who think they get to tell you who you can and can't root for. I have no problem with an NU football/CU basketball fan like Po, or other people who root for both basketball programs.

I'm an NU guy though, and I'm hoping (probably against logic) that Nebraska can make this a competitive game, and hopefully even steal this one from their (admittedly) superior in-state rival.

Thoughts on the game, guys? Creighton gonna run away with this one? Or can Talley and Gallegos keep supplying the offense and Eche...Eche...Gregory find himself getting neutralized a little bit by Mt. Almeida? (Almeida wears down though. He'll be rotated out a decent amount, and while Ubel has played pretty darn well, Creighton's big man is a handful. Ubel might get out-muscled quite a bit...although, it's crazy how much stronger Brandon has gotten since he came in as a toothpick freshman.)

Also, a simple plea from me: Don't be bagging on Po or anybody else pulling for Creighton, please? Nothing wrong with being a Jays fan. It just means you're a Communist and you hate America. (Just kidding!)

    GBR!!!!

  14. Man, that is absolutely ridiculous. I know you can more than take care of yourself, I'm just sorry your kid was there to see it. That sucks. And no...I actually don't think it would've mattered if your kid was in the car or not. I get the sense that had you been alone, your first unedited verbal exchange with this complete piece of garbage would've been sufficient to back him off. I don't know why, but I bet you're pretty intimidating when you're pissed.

Then again, this is an Iowa fan we're talking about. Sorry again man...what a sad, pathetic person. I bet his life is miserable.

  15. What the f are you going on about five seasons? Nebraska has gone to 3 CCG in the last FOUR seasons. Or four years. There's no semantics about it.

Bo's been here five seasons. Been to three CCGs over that span. I was talking about his entire tenure. But yeah, 3 in the last 4 is accurate. I misunderstood, but, in my defense, I did drink an irresponsible amount of alcohol this weekend. So cut me some f'ing slack.

  16. If Bo goes by way of firing, you can forget about who you want to replace him because they ain't coming. 3 CCG appearances in five seasons (3 in 4 years as some have described it is murky semantic maneuvering, imo) and a ten win season is more than enough to earn more time. If he's let go, we're pretty much out of consideration for any up and coming or established big time coach. Solich was let go almost a decade ago, but people still reference his record when he was let go to this day. SI had an article on him and Ohio and they hit that angle pretty hard just a couple months ago.

Now, if he goes of his own volition, that's a whole different story. And I'm not saying I hope that happens. I'm just saying if he gets fired after this year, get ready to start paying a lot more attention to Darin Erstad and Tim Miles.

  17. Dobson ain't the problem.

Slow LBs and middling line play are our biggest hindrances. Not a hell of a lot Dobson can do to make Whaley be not slow, or make PJ Smith learn how to tackle.

We need higher caliber athletes in the trenches and at LB. As far as the LBs go, we might have done with last year's class and Santos the year prior. D-Line is another story. I see potential for some mediocre play out of that unit again next year. Martin was the only disruptive guy we had, really. So...sh#t.

  18. In answer to the question about a third party, my answer is no. We need five or more viable parties. If that sounds ridiculous, I'll simply counter with what we currently have in place. Having three firmly entrenched parties would eventually get stuck in the same mire of regurgitating the same scripted party line over and over and over again. We need fresh blood, and a lot of it. The old system is stagnant and contaminated with old moldy corpses who are still somehow managing to reach their skeletal fingers into our pockets. We need massive diversity to truly infuse a fresh sense of ideological resurgence in this country.

Repubs have a serious, serious problem. They have far less flexibility in terms of their philosophical approach because they have hung their hat on religiously guided moral grounds in numerous instances. This is now killing them. An example is a guy like Dick Cheney, who is not in a frame on my desk. But I do believe he loves his daughter...I've seen him talk about her, and in that isolated instance he came across like a pretty decent guy. But he could never advocate a pro-homosexuality stance while sitting in an active political role. What do Republicans even stand for? I honestly don't know anymore. One of the fundamental defining aspects used to be limited government, but that sure as hell isn't the case anymore. So, are they hamstrung to basically taking a Jonathan Edwards position? I think people are awfully sick and tired of R politicians imperiously declaring themselves the proper judges of morality.

They need a brand new approach, and they need to distance themselves from the Evangelical crowd and Tea Party rallies, because that group got hijacked by morons. They actually started out as pretty damn reasonable, really. But...(and this is so typical) they were infiltrated and overrun by the hyperbolic self-aggrandizing type of people who also flooded into Occupy. Somehow the loud idiots in our country consistent;y manage to effectively drown out the reasonable voices. And then all of a sudden Glenn Beck is talking, and you're like, why haven't I killed myself yet?

So, yeah, R's need a full on re-branding. WE need a fluctuating base of parties that gain affiliation and support not based off of habit, but rather of ideologies expressed. I am ardently, equally critical of both the Democratic and Republican party. They're BOTH an embarrassment.
