  1. Very nice performance by the soccer team! 3-0, very dominant, even the announcer for the Boilermakers stated it was as good a thumping as you'd ever see, just for the wrong side. :) This team is building into something special, and the fantastic piece is that Morgan Marlborough, who scored her second hat trick in as many games, is only a junior, and has the potential to carry this team to heights we haven't seen since the late '90s/early '00s, in the days before the sadness of Jenna Cooper's death overwhelmed the team for a time. It's good to see the fight and the competition really getting back to a level that Walker knows these athletes are capable of. Can't wait to see the battles against those teams in the Big 10 that are either ranked or receiving votes. The stretch with Penn State, Ohio State, Illinois and Iowa will really test their mettle, but also should be a good build-up to the conference tourney and the NCAA tourney. Can't wait to see the rest of the season unfold!

  2. I wouldn't be so sure that UNO having a team will make a difference. The new Haymarket arena is being constructed to at least have a hockey configuration if memory serves me correctly. The Breslow ice complex will also be down in the Haymarket, so if they wanted, they would likely have a ready made place to practice right next to the arena. It would probably take a decent donation from the right donor to get it started. Not what Penn State had to decide to start their team, since the Huskers wouldn't need a new arena for it, but at least something to help get it off the ground. I think the case could be made for it, if the circumstances were right. And I'm not sure Title IX would come into play. You just create a women's hockey team at the same time you create a men's hockey team, and you've piggy-backed your solution. I do think dollars are the key issue, though. If the right donations could be found, I think the audience is there to be had in Lincoln.

As a side note, if you dig enough on the internet, you'll find the club hockey organization that basically houses all club programs that aren't established at the NCAA level. That's the organization that Nebraska plays in. Most Division I universities have a club level team in that organization. Not all, but a lot. I only found out about Husker Hockey after digging to see what level the hockey team my wife and I saw play at her alma mater when we were back for homecoming last year was in. Augustana in Illinois. The thing I found really interesting was we knew they had played a U of Iowa Hawkeye team, but I couldn't find it anywhere on the NCAA site. That's what led me to the other club team organization. Interesting stuff, especially if you're a big hockey fan.

  3. Just today, UNO announced that starting in '12-'13, the men's b-ball team will play at the new Ralston arena, with 4K capacity. Sounds like a good fit for them to build their fan base. Like him or hate him, Alberts has made some impressive and aggressive moves to attempt to make the athletic department profitable and sustainable. To me, just the latest in a series of bold moves he's made since becoming AD. Keep up the good work, Trev!

    Linkie thingie for the article:

  4. Can you imagine the potential power, and the potential strength within the league, had the Big 8 schools thought a bit outside the box, and gone in a slightly different direction? Imagine, if you will, if the Big 8 had, instead of looking South, looked West, or looked within... or even looked slightly East? Think about the potential had we tried to lure Iowa or Minnesota... tried to lure Colorado State, and then gone further West and picked off Utah and BYU together? I know they didn't have the eyeballs of the Texas schools... but we've seen that lure has come with a price over the past two years. Would those schools have provided a better stability? Would it be better for the Big 8 schools if we were all still together, and working with other powers from a position of strength... rather than having several working now from a position of weakness... I know several will say 'doesn't matter'. And it doesn't in that sense... but I did forewarn you this was a 'what-if' type of thread. :) Thoughts, anyone?

  5. Aye. The whole thing with the Pitt and Syracuse info coming out today, combined with the upper $20M exit fee is just crazy to me, if Texas is on their way to joining. Why would you allow them at that point to then foster the type of resentment that is bound to come with the arrangements? Dunno... I'm still of the opinion that I'll believe Texas gets any of these deals we're hearing about it only when I see it. While I can see the desirability from a perceived eyeballs and $$ standpoint, I really can't see a conference not seeing what Texas has done to the last two conferences they were members of, and not wanting that type of attitude within any other conference. At this point I think a wait-and-see on this is the only approach.

  6. Congrats to the Cyclones! Even if it was over UConn, you went on the road, and had a nice hard fought win in unfriendly confines. Those type of battles always seem to help build a team down the road. Grats again!

  7. The hilarious thing is the legs the current rumor is getting with the ACC. Texas to ACC for all sport BUT football, they go indie in football, agree to play at least four games a year against ACC teams, with some special provision of having some on LHN, ESPN pays both ACC and Longhorns for the deal, rumored to be worth potentially $1B to all parties concerned, potentially paving the way for ND to go to ACC with same agreement. Why on earth the ACC would agree to such stupidity is beyond me, but if they do, they deserve everything that comes with it. That type of inequity will kill that conference quicker than anything. The true football schools will get out as quick as possible - F St., V Tech, Miami, Boston schools... and I don't think a Pitt or a Syracuse wants to mess with that type of setup either. I would hope they're smarter than that... but then I had hoped the Big XII was smarter than it proved to be as time went on too.

Guess we'll see or hear more after the BoR meetings for both OU and tu on Monday... both have line items referring to conference alignment in meetings on Monday.

  8. That's the one thing I've always appreciated about Sagarin. He's very honest about the idiocy of the computer polls this early in the season. He admits that his don't really tell the tale until late in the season because of the small sample size of the data being put in. He also produces two different polls, one that includes his entire formula, and one that's tweaked for what the BCS requires. Or at least he used to... haven't followed the computer polls quite as closely in recent years.

  9. Lot of interesting dynamics to this...

I've been following conference realignment on two fronts. The first is the obvious of the major athletic conferences that cover all or most sports for schools. In that fashion, it's interesting to hear this story because of the dynamics it presents. I don't want Texa$ in our conference ever again, but if they were going to come in, I couldn't think of a better leader to watch over their entry and keep them in line than Delaney. Figures that Texas would weasel their way into making the plug with Notre Dame, which has been the plum B1G officials have wanted to pick for some time. I can't stand either school, but I can certainly see the marketing attraction from that point.

The other conference realignment I've been watching is for college hockey. I follow UNO's team when in season, and love to watch college hockey. College hockey conference alignment has been separate from other athletic alignment basically since it's inception. But that changed over the last year with the announcement that the B1G would form a six-team hockey conference under their banner when Penn State boosts their club team to NCAA Division I. With that came an announcement over the last six months that a different six schools would form a new power hockey school conference as well. One of the pieces yet to drop in that alignment has been where Notre Dame's hockey team would go. With this information, it appears that may have been why Notre Dame hasn't made an announcement yet. A few schools that had been waiting on that announcement really aren't any more. So probably behind the scenes, some notification was given of what might happen.

Again, interesting stuff. I'd say no to Texas, but then, it won't surprise me if it comes to fruition. I just hope Delaney and the rest know what they're in for.

  10. Also good to hear the family let him decide for himself. Makes it that much more encouraging that the kid decided he wanted to come here because of what he saw in the school, not because his Dad influenced him. Dad had to be pretty proud of the choice, though. From the article I read, the kid said they really didn't get to Lincoln much because of how busy they were, so he really hadn't seen the town too much. Anyhoo... good for Doc, and good to hear!

  11. Just a rumor:

"from the Big Ten "deep throat" (who knows if fact or fiction):

Earlier this evening, Notre Dame and Texas jointly presented the Big Ten Conference with their proposed terms of entry into the conference. These terms resulted from lengthy discussions among both schools and the Big Ten over the past several months.

    The major items include:

    1. The preservation of an eight game (plus championship) conference football schedule. Both ND and Texas wish to preserve rivalries with non-Big Ten universities on a regular basis. This would require the Big Ten to abandon its current plans of a 9 game conference schedule.

    2. The staggering of the schedule to allow for mid-season scheduling with non-conference football opponents.

    3. The preservation of the status quo conference makeup until approximately 2014, unless the Big XII fails to retain key (NOT including A&M) conference members. This will provide the member schools, acting in unison, with the greatest leverage negotiating ongoing television contracts, particularly with ESPN.

    4. Should Texas depart the conference for the Big Ten before ND due to the further disintegration of the Big XII, ND will remain independent until approximately 2014

    5. The Longhorn Network would remain independent until approximately 2014, at which point the network would become a part of an expanded Big Ten Network (specifically referred to as "BTN2"), likely either in partnership with Fox, NBC, or less likely ABC

The Big Ten just wrapped up a meeting to initially consider all of the terms presented by the schools, including the aforementioned.

Notably, there is a general discontent with the reporting of the situation by ESPN with specific regard to Texas. ESPN has, for self-serving purposes, drastically exaggerated the lean of Texas to the Pac12 conference in nearly all commentary. ESPN has essentially waged a propaganda campaign to drive support among the Texas stakeholders to the Pac12 conference. ESPN has gone so far as to attempt to accelerate the disintegration of the Big XII to pressure Texas into making an immediate conference change decision. Texas has steadfastly resisted change, and will do so until the appropriate time occurs for Texas to stand in a strong position to renegotiate television contracts, including with ESPN.

In reality, the preference expressed by Texas' relevant leadership is to depart the Big XII for the Big Ten at the time that gives Texas the greatest leverage in negotiating a new television rights deal. The Big Ten and Texas agreed that Texas should do what is best for Texas, which they also both agree is a move by Texas to join the Big Ten Conference. Delaney's top priority has been to create an environment for Texas and Notre Dame to join the conference on mutually benefical terms.

Notre Dame has an interest in preserving its traditional rivalries, three of which occur already in the Big Ten, and creating a new national rivalry with a traditional powerhouse. The Big Ten believes that ND prefers independence, but realizes that it will soon have no choice but to join a conference. The Big Ten also believes that ND is trying to position itself so that if it must join a conference, it does so on the most favorable terms possible. Hence the return to the 8 game schedule and a protected game with national power Texas. The Big Ten will attempt to create a mutually beneficial environment for ND that allows it to preserve a great deal of independence to retain all its traditional rivalries within the conference context.

The initial mood at the Big Ten to the terms provided by the two schools is "receptive."

I do not want to see Texas in the B1G.

Yeah, same rumor I'm hearing. I don't think the B1G would let them in on THOSE terms, but certainly bargaining could allow them to get to a point where they might. I don't want to see Texas in this conference either, but if we have to share a conference with them, I could think of no one better to put them in their place as far as equal footing with the rest of the teams then Delaney and the rest of the B1G leadership. Hopefully, it is nothing more than rumor. However, I always take these with a grain of salt BOTH ways, meaning that it's always possible something like this has occurred. How receptive B1G is... that's another story.

  12. I'd love to see the Blue Angels, but yeah, I don't think that'll happen with the PR they usually do after at the air show. Would be fun! On a totally unrelated... or semi-related note... knapp, you don't live too far from us. We live in the Highlands. :)
